Oracle instead of Pointbase

Hi All,
I am just developing a portal prototype. We have installed a standard weblogic platform 8.1 SP4 on Linux. Now we want to change from the standard pointbase database to the oracle 10 database. The database is already set up and running.
Can anybody provide me with the necessary steps to perform this migration? What do I need to do to store the data in oracle instead of pointbase?
Is there a detailed tutorial / guide for this? I think it is not an usual task, but I couldn't find the relevant inforamtion.
Your help is very much appreciated.
Regards,
Cord

hi joespeh
This should be rather simple. just switch you jdbc drivers and you are
all set for oracle.
You may want to read about the JDBCConnectionPool and JDBCTxDataSource
elements to help setup connection pool for oracle
Hope this helps, or did I get your question completly wrong.
cheers

  • Why use oracle instead of some other db?

I need some help. I'm writing a masters thesis about porting a system from PostgreSQL to Oracle 10g. They idea is to get increased performance on the system I need to argument for why I chose Oracle instead of some other DB. So I wondered if anyone had some sales pitches that I could use?

To explain shortly about the application, it is a network monitoring/analyse tool. It performs a root cause analysis of tcp connections. It works by first populating a packets table with all the packet headers. (After this table is first populated it is no longer changed). Then through PL/SQL and some external functions it performs the analysis. The analysis is mostly done by selecting all the packet headers from one connection and analysing them. There is only one user of the system at any one time.
I have heaps of more information about it, but this was the very short version.

  • Why use oracle instead of Ms Access

Why sould I select Oracle over MS Access? QUESTION POSED ON: 05 JUL 2001
    QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Brian Peasland
Oracle, MS Access, and any other vendor's database package all have their advantages and disadvantages. Selecting one over another is really a case of weighing the advantages and disadvantages for your specific case. I'll give a brief description of the strengths and weaknesses of each of these two packages and then you can decide!
MS Access - This package is very cheap (it is part of Office Professional) and very easy to use. Most of the work in Access is done through wizards and GUI tools. One can quickly develop a small, single user database with this one. MS Access is not very good for a multi-user application. It is not very robust and does not have good multi-user transactional control. In addition, Access cannot handle large amounts of data. All of the data in the database is stored in a single file and that has its limitations.
Oracle - This package is not cheap at all. It is very complex and it can be difficult to administer. But its complexity makes it very robust. There is almost nothing that you cannot do in Oracle (unlike Access). Oracle is specifically designed for multi-user applications. In fact, thousands of users can access the same data without any problems due to Oracle's very good transactional control. But applications are not developed nearly as quickly. Oracle can also handle large amounts of data. In fact, Oracle 8i can handle up to 512 petabytes of data!
In the end, Oracle is a true Database Management System (DBMS) and Access is not. This does not mean that Access does not have its place. If I'm designing a quick database that only I'll use, I would do it in Access over Oracle. If I'm designing a robust, scalable application used throughout my enterprise with many users, then Oracle is my choice!
    Thanks

  • Is it possible to use Oracle instead of DB2 with Netweaver Test-drive 2004?

    Dear all,
Recently I ordered on SAP Knowledge shop the Netweaver Test-Drive 2004 DVD (the 32-bit version for Linux (Red Hat Enterprise)).
Before the installation I had already installed Oracle Enterprise 11g (Release 2). However the DVD installed both AS and DB2.
What I would like to ask is that is it possible to use my already installed Oracle database with Netweaver and
    remove DB2 from hard disk?

In addition to the aforementioned security issues, there is the matter of OS independence.  By being able to refer to an non-os-specific alias, application code does not have to be concerned with the physical (and thus, os-dependent) mapping of a file.  Makes code portable, which is one of the big features of Oracle vs. everyone else.

  • AppServer: student with problem substituting Oracle for Pointbase

I am trying to learn how to use Oracle with AppServer,
modifying the "simpleaccount" entity example to work
with a table in Oracle 9 database instead of Pointbase.
Have attempted to set up Oracle connection pool - "ping" operation works, but when run client application
get an exception from server with failure to connect
    to database.
    I would appreciate suggestions.
    My AppServer settings:
    1) extra JDBC resource: resource name jdbc/oractute,
    Pool name "OraclePool"
    2) extra ConnectionPool "OraclePool",
    datasource classname oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSource
    resource type (tried blank, and jdbc.sql.DataSource);
    connection validation - not required,
    validation method: autocommit
transaction isolation: blank to use JDBC driver defaults
addtional properties: user ead; password ***; url jdbc:oracle:thin@mymachine:1521:orac1
    PING> Ping was successful;
    3) application jvm classpath suffix settings contains
    reference to my copy of Oracle ojdbc14.jar;
    4) deploytool used to change ResourceRef of SavingsAccountEJB, was jdbc/PointBase is now jdbc/oractute
Would also appreciate advice on when to use
DataSource and when to use XADataSource

What's the exception that you are getting? Could you please paste the relevant portion
    of the server.log?
DataSource is used for local transactions - transactions that are restricted to a single
resource manager. So, as an example, if you use a single database in your app, you
    would want to use DataSource.
XADataSource is used for global transactions. Global transactions are those that involve
multiple resuorce managers. An example is an app that uses JDBC and JMS togethar.
    Hope that answers your question.
    thanks.

  • Get date from Oracle when local time zone is different from Oracle time zon

    Hi!
    Local machine time zone= +2
    Oracle time zone= +1
I set date to Oracle using java.sql.Date.
From application I save date at 00:30 clock and send e.g. 28.06.2002, but in Oracle date is save as 27.06.2002 01:00 (hour=01 , I suppose that is because java.sql.Date hasn't time the Oracle set it time = time zone=+1) And when I get date from Oracle I get incorrect date. In SQL I don't use date masks. Maybe solution is to use java.sql.Timestamp object (when save date to Oracle) instead of java.sql.Date?

  • PHP connection to Oracle basic question.

Forgive me if I am missing a very basic piece of knowledge here.
I have a small local web server I run with Apache 2.2.3 and PHP 5.1.6.
I am working on a project that uses Oracle tables located on the corporate network servers.
These tables are normally maintained by the IT department using TOAD. I'd like for the business process 'owners' to be able to maintain the tables themselves - but the company has limited TOAD licensing and some of the dependencies between tables are not readily apparent (especially to a non-IT person).
Therefore I am trying to develop a simple web app to allow table updates, using PHP to connect to the Oracle tables. The idea is I'll put the app and web server on a USB stick for the designated business person to use. (yeah, I know - seems crazy, but the paperwork to get this all into a true 'production' system is impossible, and I really don't want to have to maintain these tables myself for the rest of my working life)
I've got the basics of the app working through some MySQL tables, now I just need to know how to connect to the 'real' Oracle tables.
Here's what I've gathered from my reading:
I need to download Instant Client and install to my 'server' (on my USB stick)
I need to change PHP.ini to enable the extension for php_oci8.dll
I need to set some environment variables....and here is where I am lost.
Are these environment variables on my web server?
I am running my USB web server on a Windows XP system (as will the business users). But it doesn't make sense to me to set my PC's environment variables, because then I'd need to worry about ever PC the USB stick got used on.
Could someone clear this up for me? I am sure I am just missing something very basic.
Oh, and is there anything else I'm missing?
    Thanks for any help!
    mary

Get it working on a full machine first, and then move to using the USB stick. Refer to Underground PHP and Oracle Manual for standard installation information.
PHP/Apache will need to be able to find the Oracle Instant Client libraries. Normally on WIndows this is done with the PATH environment variable on the machine running the web server.

PS your IT department might like the free SQL Developer tool from Oracle instead of TOAD.

  • Calling ORACLE Store Procedure with parameters in user define function

    Hi everybody,
We have a scenario connecting Oracle DB thru JDBC adapter.
We have to call store procedure with input parameter and output parameter to retrieve data from DB. The implementation was made using JDBC adapter by building the correct XML message with EXECUTE action, and it works fine.
Now we need to use DB lookup within mapping. I wrote users define function with SELECT statement (using the JDBC adapter) and it works fine but I need to call store procedure in ORACLE instead of SELECT statement.
I found lot of examples concerning DB lookup but none of them explained how to write UDF calling store procedure in ORACLE with input and output parameters.
I am looking for an example.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gigi

I agree with you, but issue is we have lots of existing store procedure, which we need to call where damn required. I am sure those will be few but still i need to find out.
If you think you are going to get existing MS Stored Procedures  or Oracle Packages that had nothing to do with the ORM previously to work that are not geared to do simple CRUD operations with the ORM and the database tables, you have a rude awakening
coming that's for sure. You had better look into using ADO.NET and Oracle Command objects and call those Oracle Packages by those means and use a datareader.
You could use the EF backdoor, call Oracle Command object and use the Packages,  if that's even possible, just like you can use MS SQL Server Stored Procedures or in-line T-SQL via the EF backdoor.
    That's about your best shot.

  • Unhandled token type: Unknown token: 0x45 converting sqlserver smalldatetime to oracle timestamp

    Hi!
I'm using ODI 12c to migrate some data from MS Sql server DB to Oracle 12c DB.
I'm using LKM SQL to Oracle and IKM Oracle Update.GLOBAL.
In conversion, i'm using CAST(<smalldatetime field> AS TIMESTAMP).
In step Load Data of LKM SQL to Oracle i'm getting the following error:

I think it could be caused by the use of LKM SQL to Oracle instead of LKM MSSQL to Oracle. I use SQL to Oracle because I have no agent configured.
Can you help please? Has anyone experienced this error?
    Thanks!

this appears to be an api management issues, not AAD. Its not appropriate to punt this to the AAD team.
debugging what api management token request on the (AAD) STS sends, in the posted form body, we see

the (Azure) token endpoint receiving this objects to a missing resource parameter, which is admittedly marked as option in the documentation
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn645542.aspx
it makes perfect sense that in a confidential client flow that the STS would requires nomination of the intended consumer of the token (i.e the api manager endpoint).
This seems to be  case where AAD needs two application definitions : one for the requesting all (the developer console) and one for the API manager endpoint itself, whose entity name can be configured so that the subject console app (registration in
AAD) can be granted access to the object endpoint (registration in AAD) with some permission declared in the permission model of the API.

    Hi,
As a quick test, can you check whether you are able to connect to that Oracle DB using sys?
If DB is in remote machine, please check the accessibility.
If you are still not able to do it with db config tool, you can try manually using the link
