Oracle Long dataType = a long text String?

Hi all.
I'm in the middle of writing a servlet that uses JDBC to connect to an Oracle DB. I need a field in Oracle to store a varchar2 type String without the 4000 characters limiation. I picked Long datatype as it 'stores CHAR data of variable seize up to 2 GB' as said in documentations.
The problem is, I don't know how to put it in the prepareStatement. Would it be a prep.setString or something else? I would be grateful if anyone can tell me what I can do and whether if setting a Long is correct.
Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(url, loginPwd, loginPwd);
PreparedStatement prep = con.prepareStatement(INSERT INTO chanEvents VALUES (?,?,?,?));
prep.setInt(1, nextVal);
prep.setString(2, eventName);
prep.setString(3, dateString);
//?? the following is where Oracle column is set to LONG.
//Should I use setString or something else?
// let say longString is a very long String
prep.setString(4, longString);
if (prep.executeUpdate() != 1)      {
        out.println("Bad update");
        con.close();
        prep.close();
        return false;
con.close();
prep.close();

  • Find the width of a text string inside a text box?

    Hi,
    I have a text box with a long text string in it. I would like to know what the width of the text string is so that I can scroll it inside the textbox using the text box scrollviewer.
    var sv = this.foodieItemText.GetFirstDescendantOfType<ScrollViewer>();
    sv.ScrollToHorizontalOffsetWithAnimation(this.foodieItemText.Width, 20);
    The scrolling works fine but I don't know what value to use for the width offset in the first argument to ScrollToHorizontalOffsetWithAnimation. For my purposes I want it to scroll the full length of the text string (which is longer than the actual with of
    the text box). Any ideas?

    Hi duffybr,
    Yes, there is a ScrollViewer inside TextBox template and we could scroll to the specific position as we need, however there is no direct way to get the string width in TextBox, however we could get the width in TextBlock, by measure method.
    See this discussion for more information:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9126076/how-can-i-calculate-the-width-of-a-string-in-metro-without-displaying-it
    Besides, there are some third party libraries help us get the String width.

  • SQL Server Long Text column to Oracle CLOB via DB Link

    Does anyone know how to load a SQL Server Long Text column into an Oracle CLOB column using DB Link? When I try to Select from SQL Server table into Oracle table, I receive the error "ORA-00997: illegal use of LONG datatype".
    Thanks,
    Susan

    Hi,
      This is a known restriction involving long columns -
    (1) LONG datatype not supported with use of DBLINK when insert or update involves a select statement
    (2) LONG datatype cannot be used in a WHERE clause, in INSERT into ... SELECT ... FROM
    constructs, and in snapshots.
    The workround is to use a PL/SQL procedure or try the SQLPLUS COPY command.
    If you have access to My Oracle Support then review these notes -
    Cannot Move A Long From non Oracle database Ora-00997: Illegal Use Of Long Datatype (Doc ID 1246594.1)

  • JDBC Thin Client and Oracle Long Datatype

    I am using Wepshere 4.0.2 , JDBC 2.0 (thin driver) and oracle 9i.
    I have a procedure which takes Oracle Long Datatype as its parameter.
    I use following code to execute procedure.
    String dataforsql="AAA000000003 123123 07/01/200301/01/2003";
    byte[] bytes = dataforsql.getBytes();
    InputStream is = new ByteArrayInputStream(bytes);
    cstmt=conn.prepareCall("call nscw.CPPF_SAVEPDCRAWTABLE2(?,?,?)");
    cstmt.setAsciiStream (1, is,bytes.length);
    The above code works perfectly for data upto 4000 bytes. Once the data crosses the 4000 mark.
    i get a procedure error
    ORA-01460: unimplemented or unreasonable conversion requested

    cstmt.setAsciiStream (1, is,bytes.length);Oracle's support for CLOB (and BLOB) columns using set{Ascii,Binary}Stream() generally s*cks. You'll have to read Oracle's own JDBC manual (you can read it online at http://technet.oracle.com) for whatever sequence they recommend.
    E.g. for insertion and updation of CLOBS, you're supposed to use an oracle-specific function (EMPTY_CLOB()) as the value in the INSERT/UPDATE statement, and then do a SELECT, getClob(), and use Clob APIs to update the actual column value. At least officially. Or you have to use some Oracle-specific APIs in oracle.sql.Connection and oracle.sql.CLOB.

  • Ring Item text string too long to display all - use ellipses ?

    The width of my Ring control is not wide enough to display all characters in the Item text string.  LabVIEW simply truncates the text with no indication that additional text is present.  Is there a way to display an ellipses in such cases ?  For example :
    "Ring text string that is too long"
    that is now shown as :
    "Ring text string that i"
    could be shown as :
    "Ring text st...too long"

    A couple of suggestions:
    1.) Use property nodes to determine which strings are too long, then concatenate the strings with ellipses.
    2.) Increase the height so the text wraps.

  • Find string in long text

    Hello,
    I'm looking for a way to find a specific string in all the long texts of our routing cards. Is there any FM/ TC / BAPI that can do that?
    Thanks,
    Eti

    Hi,
    Not sure what your exact need is, but you can achieve this via abap statements.
    The syntax SEARCH is what you should be using for finding a string in a variable / table / internal table / long text etc.
    I would suggest take help of your abaper to write a simple program for you to do the extraction which you're looking for.

  • Using long text in Mobile 7.1

    Hello,
    We are using Mobile 7.1. We want to display a long text of the notification object in the Mobile Client. We defined this field as STRING data type in the DOE and set TEXT MEMO flag for it. Unfortunately we have a problem with its definition in the backend. This field is included in the header structure for the noitification obect so when we define it as STRING (DSTRING data element), we get compilation error that STRINGS cannot be defined in the flat structure.
    So how can we define this field in the backend in order to transfer more than 256 characters?
    Thanks in advance,

    You need to have a separate table to store attachments in the backend.
    In the DOE define the attribute as STRING(tick the text memo) [This you have already done] .
    In the backend you will need another table where you will be storing the attachments.
    Lets assume you have a notification table : In this define the field for headertext with the data type as CHAR  and length 1
    Create another table where you want to store the attachments:
    You can have the fields as NOTIFICATION and HEADERTEXT. This headertext should have a datatype STRING. You can also have a field called attachment type to store whether it is HeaderText or Binary Memo.
    Create a BAPI wrapper for getting the HEADERTEXT with importing parameter as NOTIFICATION and exporting HeaderText and a return parameter:
    Here the source code:
    SELECT SINGLE b~headertext INTO e_headertext
             FROM <notification table> AS a
               INNER JOIN <attachment table> AS b ON
                 borderid = aorderid
                 WHERE a~orderid = orderid AND
                  a~headertext = 'X' and
                  b~ATTCHTYP = 'HEDTXT'.
    Now in the DOE : give this function module name in the attachment Function module. SAVE (very important)
    After doing the mapping go to the attachment tab and do the mapping with the attachment function module.
    save and activate the backend adapter.
    execute SDOE_LOAD.
    Go to SE11: there should be a table starting <cds table name>ending with _TM.
    Create an application in the similar way. No extra code required.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • How to display Long text in a JLabel with multiline??

    Hi,
    Suppose I have a label that displays a long text....
    ""This is an example label that displays long text, how to break the line????.........""
    how to display it like below with one label?
    ""This is an example label
    that displays long text, how
    to break the line????.........""
    Thanks

    so basically do this
    JLabel myLabel = new JLabel();
    String theText = "<html>This is an example label<br>
                                  that displays long text, how<br>
                                  to break the line????.........</html>";
    myLabel.setText(theText);Obivously, u dont have to use a separate string, u could just call setText or pass it into the JLabel constructor, i just separated it to make it easier to see what your supposed to do.

  • How to store long text in Rich Text Format in custom table

    I am aware of a way to store them as Standard texts (SO10).. But not sure on if we can store them in tables..
    Plz advise
    Thanks

    Not that familiar with RTF, but you could try and create a field of type (x)string in your table and store the data there.

  • How to store long text in transaction f-65

    Hi all,
    I need to add long text in the transaction f-65 for a particular document number. I have used the FM CREATE_TEXT. There are no errors but the text is not getting updated.
    Pointers on this will be really helpful.

  • Reading long text for more records at a time

    Hi all,
    We have a requirement for which that data like textid textname textobject  and language  must  be taken in to an internal table and for each record in the internal table i  have to read the long text inorder to compare the long text for the given search text.
    If i use Read_text inside the loop and endloop it works but it may not be appropriate in performance point of view.
    Is there any function module which can read long texts for more records at a time.
    The long text data in STXL will be in raw data format right? is there any way to convert raw data to normal so that by hitting the STXL i can read the long text data for more than one record at a time.
    Thanks in advance
    sanju.

    HI Sanju,
    Below is a code snippet which describes reading a long text frm the screen and appending it into the internal table.This code is actually to read the text from the screen and inserting a record into STXl and STXH.
    From your query what i understood is that you are storing the long text from the screen into a internal table and so you not want to use the read_text FM due to performance issue.
    Since tdline(tline table) is 132 char long format i use this small logic to read the screen data and append it to my internal table.
    *Data Declarations
      DATA: lv_strlen TYPE i,
            lv_create TYPE boolean,
            lv_desc TYPE string.
      DATA: ls_text TYPE tline,
            ls_basic_text TYPE stxh.
      DATA: lt_text TYPE ztty_tline_tab.
      CONSTANTS:
       lc_tdid TYPE  thead-tdid VALUE 'Z001',
       lc_tdobject TYPE thead-tdobject VALUE 'Z_ALERTS'.
    *Appending the text to the internal table.
      lv_strlen = STRLEN( iv_alert_text-alert_text ).
      lv_desc = iv_alert_text-alert_text.
      IF lv_strlen < 132.
        ls_text-tdformat = '*'.
        ls_text-tdline = lv_desc.
        APPEND ls_text TO lt_text.
      ELSE.
    *logic to wrap text
        DO.
          ls_text-tdformat = '*'.
          IF STRLEN( lv_desc ) < 132.
            ls_text-tdformat = '*'.
            ls_text-tdline = lv_desc.
            APPEND ls_text TO lt_text.
            EXIT.
          ENDIF.
          IF lv_desc+132(1) <> ' '.
            CONCATENATE lv_desc(131) '-' INTO ls_text-tdline.
            lv_desc = lv_desc+131.
          ELSE.
            ls_text-tdformat = '*'.
            ls_text-tdline = lv_desc(132).
            lv_desc = lv_desc+132.
          ENDIF.
          APPEND ls_text TO lt_text.
        ENDDO.
      ENDIF.
    Please award graciously if found helpful.Please do ask me if i have not answered you properly.
    Thank you.
