Oracle ODBC

Can you still use the Oracle ODBC driver after you install the ODP.NET driver? I installed the ODP.NET driver and it worked great for my ASP.NET pages, but a windows program that used the Oracle ODBC driver now fails with the following error:
-2147467259 - Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 126 (Oracle ODBC Driver).
Since I'm new to the Oracle world, does anyone have any comments, suggestions, etc that might help me with this?
Thanks

Thanks, I appreciate the information. I did try installing the ODP.Net in a different directory on our development server, but for some reason the ASP.NET pages that use ODP.NET did not work. So then I installed the ODP.NET in the same directory as the previous version and the ASP.NET pages worked fine. If you install ODP.NET in a different directory, do you have to explicitly tell your programs where to look? It seems that if ODP.NET is registered in the registry, then the ASP.NET pages, or any program for that matter, would easily be able to recognize that and be able to use ODP.NET. Is there something you have to do or did I just somehow screw up the install?

    Has anyone use the Oracle ODBC Gateway to connect to another Oracle database?  Any issues with that configuration?  Where do I get the ODBC drivers for Linux?
    (I know, "why not use a dblink?" -- well that would be against company security policies)

    Hi,
       From the Oracle point of view we support using DG4ODBC for Oracle to Oracle connections. However, we have not actually tested it as DG4ODBC is primarily designed for access to non-Oracle databases.
    How DG4ODBC will work between Oracle databases depends on the ODBC driver and what that supports. You will need an ODBC Oracle driver which you can get from various suppliers including Oracle but also vendors such as DataDirect, Easysoft etc. You could try a Google search.
    You say you do not want to use database links but that is how DG4ODBC is used, You cannot do -
    sqlplus user/password@dg4odbc_oracle
    Once Dg4ODBC is setup and configured as in this note - if you are using Linux 64-bit -
    How to Configure DG4ODBC on 64bit Unix OS (Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX Itanium) to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install (Doc ID 561033.1)
    then in the Oracle database you create a database link and select from tables in the other Oracle database -
    select * from table@dg4odbc_db_link ;

  • Problem with Oracle ODBC Driver on Windows 7

    Hi,
    Please help with this problem I have with a Windows 7 machine. I have installed Oracle Client 11g on my Windows 7 machine but when I want to create an ODBC Data Source, I cant find any driver for oracle. How can I resolve this issue? I need the data source for an application to work and I cant figure out what is happening. Someone please help!

    There's a dedicated Oracle ODBC forum:

    As this forum deals with connections from Oracle to foreign data stores it would be better to close this thread and post it again in the ODBC forum.

    You have to install the Oracle client in order to be able to use
    the Oracle ODBC driver. The ODBC driver relies on, among other
    things, the network communication libraries of the Oracle client.
    If you're willing to pay for an ODBC driver, Merant (now
    DataDirect I believe) has an ODBC driver that doesn't require
    the Oracle client to be present. I've not used it, so I can't
    recommend it, but it's an option.

  • Oracle ODBC  - Internal Error - unable to initialize NLS during driver load

    I'm having some trouble with my ODBC connections which I hope someone can please help me with!
    About 6 weeks ago all was working as normal.
    As far as I know there have been no updates to the ORacle DB, the Windows XP operating system or the ODBC Drivers.
    Today when I opened access and visual case 2 to connect to Oracle I was at first greeted with a:
    unable to connect SQLState=IM004 SQL_HANDLE_ENV
    error. ODBC also kept crashing.
    I restarted the computer and was confronted with a different error:
    odbc SQLSTate 08004 ORA 12154 TNS could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    I was able to fix this error by setting the environment variable TNS_ADMIN in windows xp environment variables. I'm extremely confused about how this happened though as it was working and I don't think anything has changed.
    I was then able to connect to the database via Microsoft Access but when I opened Visual Case 2 and tried to make an update, I was confronted with the following error:
    Oracle ODBC Driver - internal error - unable to initialize NLS during driver load
    I looked in the registry at:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle\KEY_OraClient10g_home1
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle\KEY_OraClient10g_home2
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle\KEY_OraDb10g_home1
    and NLS_LANG was set to "AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252" in all 3 places.
    (Though KEY_OraClient10g_home2 only had 4 entries as opposed to KEY_OraClient10g_home1's 13 entries)...
    Since I made those changes I can no longer connect through Access.
    I just receive a ODBC - connection to 'xxx' failed
    Advice greatly appreciated!!!!

    Actually it sort of does...
    I switched the ODBC connection to use instant client and now it's all working again.
    The biggest mystery is what changed to make it suddenly stop working the old way...

  • Ms-access XP front-end and oracle ODBC driver

    Hi all,
    I need to set up 5 workstations with ms-access front end accessing an oracle database through Oracle ODBC 9.2.0.5.0 driver and linked tables.
    My main concern is to learn about any issues that may limit what can and cant be done through access as opposed to an oracle client. I found out that the maximum size of an access XP database is 2GB, but I have not found accurate information as to the maximum number of records ms-access can handle per table. This would be of critical importance to me because the tables I'm working with may eventually hold up to hundreds of thousands of records.
    Concurrency control is also an important topic since 2 or more of the clients may at some point read or write information on the same tables.
    Answers to these questions and any other issues of special importance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot,
    JP.

    Just seen this message you had posted to OTN. I am currently looking for some sample codes developing applications using MS Access as front end connected to Oracle database. I appreciate if you can provide me some sample codes that has a master-detail-relationship type of access form that performs an inserts into the master and detail table. Thanks a lot.

  • MS ODBC or Oracle ODBC driver?

    Can anyone tell me which is the correct driver to use when developing front end MS Access 2003 to retrieve and update data on a Open VMS platform with Oracle 8.1.7.3 database?
    I have serval Access 2000 databases that run on most WinNT or W2K clients with a couple of W2K Dell exceptions. These Access 2000 db's connect to the Oracle database using linked tables and SQL pass-through queries that work with ODBC Manager-DNS system setup using the Microsoft for Oracle ODBC driver.
    Now we are upgrading to Office Pro 2003 so new W2K images have been setup with Oracle 8.1.7 Client. SQL*Plus works on these clients but when I create the System DNS the Access databases return an error "ODBC connection failed". I can however connect with a pass-through query using Oracle's ODBC driver. Not enough time in roll-out plan to change the ODBC connection string in hundreds of Access SPT queries.
    Please help!

  • Unable to install 64-bit Oracle ODBC Instant Client on Windows 2008 R2 machine.

    I am trying to upgrade the Oracle ODBC driver from the 32-bit version currently installed (ODBC Instant Client Release 10.1.0.5.0, April 2006) to a newer 64-bit version but have not been successful.  I have had success at uninstalling and reinstalling the existing 32-bit version package (release 10.1.0.5.0) however when I've tried to install the 64-bit ODBC Instant Client (Release 12.1, December 2012), I run the odbc_install.exe application inside the package.  it appears to run without issue/compliant, but then I do not see the 64-bit Oracle ODBC driver anywhere, either if I go via the traditional Administrator Tools --> ODBC Data Sources or if I go to the c:\windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe route.  Further investigation into the ReadMe file (ODBC_IC_Readme_Win.html) reveals that you need the 3 DLLs oci.dll, oraociei11.dll and orannzsbb11.dll which the package does not come with. Where could I obtain the correct version of these DLLs or else where can I get an installation package which already contains them?
    Any help with this is greatly appreciated.  Thank you

    Another thing is, i have created a ODBC DSN named as "sqlserver" as well. This configuration works fine when "program" parameter is set to dg4odbc in Listener.ora. But with dg4msql, it gives error.
    Followings are the configuration files:

    Hi,
    The error you get is because your HS_FDS_CONNECT_STRING is not correct:
    Be sure you can ping the SQL SERVER name from the Oracle Server,or use TCP/IP address
    Check the port, it is not necessary 1433.
    You can use the instance name insted of port:
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_STRING=server_ip_address/instance_name/database_name
    Be careful, in the LISTENER.ORA, you must specify the Gateway machine and not the SQL SERVER machine:
    sqlserver =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Gateway_Machine )(PORT = 1522)) <====you must specify Oracle Gateway machine
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = PNPKEY))
    Idem for TNSNAMES.ORA:
    SQLSERVER =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Gateway_Machine)(PORT = 1522))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = sqlserver)
    (HS = OK)

    Hi,
    I just found out what my problem was.
    Oracle ODBC driver 8.1.6.3 does not support
    positioned updates. For that you must use
    the cursor library. When I did my test
    in Windows95, I had a resource problem; the
    cursor library could not be loaded. The
    Oracle ODBC driver 8.1.6.3 probably uses
    more resources than older versions !!

  • Too many time to open a session with oracle odbc

    I have to migrate an internet site in Sql Server to Oracle.
    When I connect Oracle Database with Oracle ODBC, it takes 2 or 3 seconds.
    So if i have 8 or 10 recordset to open, it takes 20 s.
    But when sessions are open, they live about 1 m and during this time i don't have problem to connect to the database.When i don't use the site during more than 1 m, all sessions are closed and so i have to wait.
    How can i connect to the database quickly the first time?

    Are you using connection pooling? Are you pre-allocating connections on startup?

    Hi,
    Since 9.2 has been desupported for error correction you will not be able to download that version from OTN. You should ask whoever is providing the training if their is an alternate version you can use. The only versions that you will be able to download from oracle.com is 10.2 11.1, and 11.2.

  • How to select active Oracle ODBC Driver programmatically?

    Hi,
    My application creates ODBC DSN to connect with Oracle 10g database server. I need to find out Oracle Driver installed on the system programmatically. I am trying to read KEY_<PRODUCT NUMBER> registry key and eventually searching ORACLE_HOME value. This helps me in searching Oracle Driver in ODBCINST.INI registry key. (Oracle in OraDb10g_home1)
    If multiple Oracle clients are installed on the same system, multiple KEY_<PRODUCT NUMBER> registry keys and oracle drivers would be available. I am not sure which and how to select the current active oracle driver.
    Oracle in OraDb10g_home1
    Oracle in OraDb10g_home2
    Can anybody help me out? Can I use inventory file (inventory.xml) to determince current active home directory? Reading PATH environment variable to identity active home directory would be tedious.

    Please look at following thread for answer.

  • Oracle ODBC Driver 8.1.7.8b causing MFC OpenEx() delay

    Hi:
    I have installed the Oracle ODBC Driver version 8.1.7.8b on a WINNT 4.0 Workstation with SP6a. I have an MFC test app with the following code:
    PostStatus(ERROR_NOERROR, APP_NAME, "Calling OpenEx()");
    CDatabase db;
    if(db.OpenEx(_T("DSN=MYTESTDSN;UID=USERID;PWD=PASSWORD"), CDatabase::openReadOnly|CDatabase::noOdbcDialog))
         PostStatus(ERROR_NOERROR, APP_NAME, "OpenEx() success,calling Close()");
         db.Close();
    } // OpenEx()
    else // OpenEx() error
         PostStatus(ERROR_MODERATE, APP_NAME, "Error opening database,OpenEx() failed!");
    The above OpenEx call is taking upto 3 seconds to return. When I use Microsoft Oracle ODBC driver, it takes less than 0.5 sec to connect/disconnect.
    Any idea why OpenEx() is taking that long? I've compiled this using VC++ 6.0 SP5, on a WIN2K and WINNT system but I get the same result.
    Thanks,
    Amit.
