Oracle on Linux vs. Oracle on x86 Solaris
The answer I've gotten unanimously from the Linux vs. NT issue
is Linux is faster. Now, how about Oracle on Linux vs. Oracle
on the x86 ver. of Solaris??

I made a little test last fall with the pre release of Oracle
for linux. I timed the creation of index for a table,
Linux 34 sec, Solaris x86 1 min and 41 sec.
Please note that this was not the exact same hardware,
Linux Box
Pentium II 266Mhz
64 MB RAM
IBM ULTRA/DMA IDE hardisk (Dont know the exact name but
it is supposed to be quite a fast one
"The next best thing to UW SCSI"
-- the sales man said)
Solaris Box
Pentium II 266Mhz
64 MB RAM
QUANTUM FIREBALL IDE DISK
I always suspected the disk for part of the time difference,
but the linux Box definitly was not beeing held back by the OS.
The Linux box had some SCSI disk but they included neither
oracle install nor datafiles.

Need to install ORACLE 9i on solaris x86
Hi All,
Can anyone tell me where I can get DB Oracle 9i for Solaris x86?
If not, what can I use?
Thanks.
MarfyUnfortunately no chance. 9i was never supported on Solaris x86 and is desupported now on all other platforms. Use 10gR2 instead.

What Oracle binary for x86 Solaris ????
Is there even an Oracle binary available for Solaris on intel (X86, 32 bit architecture)?
Can someone tell me what, if any, Oracle instance is available for an Intel box (x86) running Solaris 8.
Thanks in advance for any help,
PeterHi
Oracle 8.1.7 (relase 3) can be ordered for Solaris X86 for Intel. Please contact your local Oracle Sales representative on how to order these.
Alternatively, you can also check with the Oracle Store in technet.oracle.com
Note : Oracle 9 for Solaris 8.0 is not available.

Porting of Sybase Application to Oracle 8i under Solaris
Dear All
I want to port an application from sybase 10.2 which is running under Solaris to Oracle 8I under Solaris. Apart from database objects and stored procedures which I have already converted I wan to conver some C Codes and Unix Scripts
Which are either shell scripts or perl programs. I need all of your valuable suggestions in this regard.
Q-1 . In the Perl Program the following lines are sybase specific
Use Sybase:: Dblib
Require /files0/apps/local/lib/perl15/Sybase/sybperl.pl;
What will be the equivalent for ORACLE.
Suggest what perl I should use in this context.
In continuation to the above also I have some shell variables assigned as follows
$SYB_SERVER=SYB_PROD_CERT;
$SYB_DATABASE=APPLDB;
$ENV{SYBASE}=/sybase/10.0.4;
$ENV{DSQUERY}=$SYB_SERVER
$SYB_USER=keshav;
$SYB_PWFILE=/myappl/processcert/passwords/$SYB_SERVER;
$SYB_PW=/usr/bin/cat $SYB_PWFILE;
chop($SYB_PW);
dbmsghandle(message_handler);
dberrhandle(error_handler);
( ($dbproc = &dblogin($SYB_USER,$SYB_PW,$SYB_SERVER)) != -1 );
( &dbuse($dbproc, $SYB_DATABASE) != -1 );
( ($dbproc2 = &dblogin($SYB_USER,$SYB_PW,$SYB_SERVER)) != -1 );
( &dbuse($dbproc2, $SYB_DATABASE) != -1 );
sub Statistics
# get distinct sub-cat counts
( &dbcmd($dbproc, "select count(*),orgnumber,name=(select servicerorgname from servicer where servicer.orgnumber=transactionlog.orgnumber) from transactionlog group by orgnumber order by count(*) desc\n") != -1 );
&dbsqlexec($dbproc);
&dbresults($dbproc);
$row = DBROWS( $dbproc );
2. One of the Sample C Program is given here which I want to convert into pro*c.
I would like to know what are the corresponding libraries of oracle under
Solaris are to be used and also the respective header files mapping of Sybase
To Oracle. Any comment of this will be appreciated.

The "-D_BIG_ENDIAN" shows you that the code is endian-dependent. This means that the program cannot be ported 1:1 because x86 is little endian while Sparc is big-endian.
I would first try to use "-D_LITTLE_ENDIAN" (or what flag ever I can find in the source codes) and to compile for x86.
Because of the "-D_BIG_ENDIAN" different source code is used for both machines. Maybe the little-endian source code is wrong:
#ifdef _BIG_ENDIAN
// correct source code for Sparc
#else
// INCORRECT source code for x86

Hi
I am not sure that it is correct forum to post my problem. I posted the same problem on Oracle JVM forum, and some one told me to post it in Linux forum. Any way I expect to get some help.
I am installing Oracle 8i on Solaris machine. I am able to connect to Oracle from client machine as long as the solaris server is up. Once i restart the Solaris machine, the Oracle can not be connected from client. Is there some configuration file for automatic start and shutdown of oracle when Solaris is restarted.
Any body knows the solution, please help.
With regards.
From Asad.

Oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10-Disk space question
I am going to install Oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10 (x86). I need some advice on Disk space allocations. Altogether i've 10GB allocated for both Solaris and Oracle in VMware. My current allocation is this:
/ ----------->6177mb
swap---------->1024mb
/tmp ----------> 400mb
/export/home------->2570mb
Is this enough to install a Basic Oracle Database? I am going to use it only for learning purposes.It is Ok to start, but I suggest you to read the:
Oracle® Database Installation Guide
10g Release 2 (10.2) for Solaris Operating System (x86)
Part Number B15697-01
for further requirements and a complete step by step guide.

Moving an Oracle Database from Solaris to AIX
Hi all,
I have been asked to move an SAP system using an Oracle database from
Solaris to AIX (on an IBM P590).
Most of the move is straightforward, except the Oracle database
transfer. It would make my life so much easier if I could simply
restore the Oracle datafiles from an off-line backup of the Solaris
system and then link it to a clean install of the Oracle binaries on
the AIX system, rather than have to do an export and import.
Is this possible, after all the AIX Oracle binaries would be the same
patch level as the Solaris binaries and the file systems would be the
same. Also as it would be an offline backup we would not have to do
any recovery, so the archive logs and the original redo logs would not
be required.
Does anyone know if this is possible or has actually executed it
successfully, any hints and tips on the gotchas would be greatly
appreciated.
TIA
Chris aka BoobBooHello Chris,
unfortunately you didn't write anything about your oracle version or your backup mechanism like RMAN,etc..
I think you will use Solaris on a SPARC architecture and not on x86? (same endian)
If you have RMAN and 10gR2 then you can use the "Database Transport Across Same Endian Platforms":
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/wnbradv.htm
> RMAN now supports the CONVERT DATABASE command, which can prepare a whole database for transport to a new platform that uses the same endian format. Database transport across platforms provides a faster and easier way to move databases from one platform to another than previous solutions requiring the use of Data Pump.
Metalinknote #413586.1 has a FAQ and a step on step guide.
If you have created your tablespaces under Oracle 10g (no oracle upgrade from previous releases!!) you can use the "Transportable tablespace feature" and copy the database files. SAP has published note #1035051 for that.
