Wanted to ask if i continue further in plsql would doing a oracle dba certification be helpful for my career.
Also that after a couple of years in plsql what would be my profile and if i went for a dba profile now then what would be my profile.
Seniors please guide.
Thanks.

Thanks.bigdelboy is not a senior, merely a bigdelboy ... thoug I suppose as he was talking about ICL4130's today his age may be showing a little.
As you have a PL/SQL I assume (possibly incorrectly) it is a PL/SQL OCA certification. In that case you should ensure you get a PL/SQL OCP first to demonstrate a high level of competence in that area.
After that you may feel that a DBA certifcatiion may be helpful it towards some of the 'DBA' takes you are doing. 'DBA' covers a whole load of things, so its difficult to say how relevant the OCA would be for you. But a different way of looking at it is that self studying for a DBA probably wouldn't do much harm and you would learn cosething is the self study. But having said that you might want to review other things to look at:
(1) Make sure you have done the 2 day dba course (and sit the exam also. You would get a cert but you might get a useful exam pass and it might be relevant to what you are doing).
(2) Make sure there isn't something else you should be doing instead. The SQL OCE would be one thought. Or perhaps something completely different like UML. Or maybe some of the SOA stuff. Or maybe things that are not certifable like SQL statement tuning, or database security things, or Business intelligence .....
The things I've mentioned are not directly career moved focused, so in that sense I probably havan't answered your question.

  • Import data using Excel and Oracle SQL Developer - I need some help

    Dear friends,
I'm using Oracle SQL Developer 1.5.1 and I need to import an Excel file into a database table. If I try to import this file in XLS format, fields and headers are correctly being shown and separated, but if I press "Next" button, it simply doesn't do anything - it stays stopped.
I did some search here in this forum and it seems to me that, when you try to import a file via XLS format, SQL Developer has bugs. Is this correct?
If I save the same file in CSV format and try to import the same file, it goes ahead, but SQL Developer is not separating fields and headers correctly. It combines all CSV fields into one - let's say Column0 and fields 1;TEST;01/01/2000 below the same Column0.
Saving the file in CSV format is not a problem, taking a very little time. But I don't know how to make SQL Developer import it correctly. Could somebody please help me? Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,
    Franklin

    Hello K,
yes, you're right. I found the following topic after posting this question here.
Re: After update to 1.5.1, import from Excel fails
I downloaded version 1.5.0 and I'll use it whenever I import data from Excel.
    Thanks,

  • Need advise on SQL,plsql developer career and future

    Hi all,
I need all your advise in making an important decisions of my career path.I work in the IT field and have about total 4-5 years of work experience involving development and testing in a product based organization.
Presently-i have got chance since last 4-5 months to work with writing PLSQL code,SQL etc on a part basis. I am very much interested to continue my career path as a PLSQL developer.
But, unfortunately -in the total of my work experience-in the past 2-3 years-i worked with a internally developed DB query language(similar to SQL) and then from last few months with plsql. But this chance to work with PLSQL has been for less time and limited scope after which i will have to work on something different.
Ii want to fully take on my career in SQL,PLSQL as Database Developer.
Please advise me if my thinking seems logical and good and if I could do it. I have planned on applying for relevant SQL,PLSQL profile jobs.
Now, My serious worry and concern is I feel that since i have worked very less with PLSQL-so am low in confidence that I feel i wont be able to answer ,or tell or not knowledgeable enough to be able to clear the technical interviews for SQL,plsql development profile which would need at least some years of experience.
I have started studying and practsing PLSQL,sql by myself for from internet. So, can you all please advise me on how could i prepare myself for hard core technical interviews of SQL,PLSQL knowledge for about 2-3 years expertise.
I know its not much possible to be competent so much in the subject by just studying and practicing. Its easy as saying to study and get it by myself-but i want to try and will put my best for it.
Please help me with your inputs, all interview questions, hard ones-suggestions,links,any study materials, real time problems which i can try solving of SQL, PLSQL development.
    Thanks All

A very good starting point is (in my opinion): [Steven Feuerstein PL/SQL Obsession|http://www.toadworld.com/Knowledge/DatabaseKnowledge/StevenFeuersteinsPLSQLObsession/tabid/153/Default.aspx].

Oracle SQL Developer
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/sql/index.html
We’ve given up all of our licenses for other tools. We simply don’t need them anymore. Oracle SQL Developer does it all for us. We’ve saved a lot of money because it’s free. It’s also given our development staff a standard tool and they love it. It’s made training and support easier.

  • Oracle SQL Developer needs some work

I just downloaded a copy today (1557) for Oracle 9.2i / Windows XP Pro
Oracle SQL Developer has a few glitches...
A compiled and working package (compiled in SQL*Plus and TOAD) opens and shows 2 errors in a SQL Query involving a CASE statement. Invalid CASE clause on an ELSE and unexpected token on an alias at the end of the case.
Compiling a package should display a message saying successfully compiled and the state of a package should always be on display!
Opened an SQL script but could not execute it as the icon's didn't become active.
    Couldn't then run the script.
These basic problems would put any serious developer off using Oracle SQL Developer.
Also background color scheme should be gray and NOT white. White is hard on the eyes. This is just basic UI stuff.
Oracle, you need more senoir developers!

Justified to the top left of the sql window, you see the execute buttons. On the top right, you will see a drop down list box. After opening a file, this drop down list box is not selected. Select your connection and the execute buttons on the top left will enable.
For PL/SQL use a slash / at the end for it to execute.

There are no rules as to what certification will help you, and what won't.
Every job, recruiter, hiring manager, and interview is different. Some only care about certification, some only care about personality, some only care about experience.
Development skills make you a better DBA, and DBA skills make you a better developer. The more skills you have, the more jobs you can apply for, the more opportunities you will have, and the more your employer will appreciate you.

  • Need help in understanding oracle plsql design phase.

I am new user learning oracle plsql. I wanted to know following points.
    1) Is there any process we follow before developing oracle procedures.
    2) Is there any algorithm, flowchart, diagrams we use for orcale procedure development.
    3) What should I learn in order to start developing oracle procedures.
    flow charts
    data flow diagrams
In there any standard used in industry ? any pointers/comments would be helpful

    1) It is different in every shop and even within a shop with different developers. The best thing for someone learning is to read the books and blogs of Tom Kyte and Steven Feuerstein and choose one. Though I must confess now that I have become a fan of Bryn Lewellyn's White Papers I may never go back.
    Try one out yourself:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/pl_sql/pdf/doing_sql_from_plsql.pdf
PS: No one knows PL/SQL better than Bryn.
    2) No. Every procedure is different. What one writes to solve one business problem may bear no relationship to what one writes to solve another. My caveats would be:
    A. SQL before PL/SQL
    B. Arrays before single row processing (that means FORALL and BULK COLLECT)
    C. Don't write line 1 without reading Tom Kyte's observations about bind variables
    3) In this order:
    A. anonymous blocks
    B. how to declare constants
    C. how to declare variables
    D. how to create control structures
    E. exception handling
    F. bulk collect and forall statements
    G. DBMS_SQL built-in package
    H. Native dynamic SQL
You will find demos of all of the above here:

  • Newbie to Oracle SQL Developer

Hi guys, cheers for taking the time to read this post.....
Im running a few different scripts in Oracle SQL Developer, one called CreateLocalSchema.sql, another CreateLocalProcedures, sql and a third SystemSetup.sql
When I press f5 to run the Systemsetup.sql, im prompted to "enter the identifier of system". Does this mean the SID? Ive tried XE, my username (lbell),orcl.
Not sure what to enter here. Im getting this error through most of the script output window.
SQL Error: ORA-00904: "SYSTEMID": invalid identifier
    +00904. 00000 - "%s: invalid identifier+
Do i need to do anything that i havent realised? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi 899065
It depends on the script. You are being asked for input via substitution variable '&variablename' or '&&variablename' or via the accept command.
    set echo on
before running the script will display the command before the output is printed. This may be reset within the script i.e. set echo off .
Forum: SQL Developer *(Not for general SQL/PLSQL questions)*
might be worth trying if the script works in sqlplus.

  • Oracle SQL Developer Connection Help

    Hi,
I'm a complete Oracle newbie, so please bear with me. I've been doing research on protein clustering and at my lab the SQL developer has been running queries that I can then do statistics on. I have the query that I need to run, and was told to download Oracle SQL Developer and Oracle Client.
I was also given a username and password, a hostname, a port and a SID. I'm a bit confused, do I still need to install Oracle Client? And if so, I can't quite find what it is on the website? I have SQL Developer installed but when I click connect I get:
"Status : Failure -Test failed: IO Error: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection"
I'm pretty computer literate outside the world of databases so if someone can offer some explanations and guidance, it would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

Thanks! If you have SQL Developer installed & need to connect to some Oracle DB,
then you do NOT need Oracle client.
FWIW - SQL Developer is written in Java & uses JDBC (thin) to connect to the DB
Is the DB Server on a subnet local to your system?

  • Oracle SQL Developer  error - "The file-based source procedure Name is not present in the database."

I recently started working on the Oracle SQL developer. I have 'select' privileges on the QA schema and when tried to execute proc in QA. It is giving the error as 'The file-based source <procedure Name>  is not present in the database.  Was it compiled?'
instead 'you do not have sufficient privileges to execute this procedure'. Did research on internet but with no luck. What configuration changes needed to be done to make it work.Guide me.

Sounds like you do not have the correct privileges.  What should have been granted to you by the QA user, or some other user with appropriate privileges, is...
    grant EXECUTE on "QA"."<PROCEDURE_OF_INTEREST>" to "<YOUR_USERID>" ;
Note that a grant of execute on a procedure has nothing to do with grants of select on some or all of QA's tables and views.
So, as Vadim suggests, from your connection node in SQL Developer's Connections view, if you expand the Other Users node, then expand QA and look in the Procedures node, do you see the procedure of interest?  If not, you cannot expect to be able to execute it from your userid's connection. And even if you do see it, you may have some other privilege that permits viewing but not executing, like...
    The role SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE
The system privilege SELECT ANY DICTIONARY
And even if you do not see it there, then having certain other privileges granted to you could permit executing it in general, like...
    The role EXECUTE_CATALOG_ROLE
The system privilege EXECUTE ANY PROCEDURE
Also, note that the 3.0 release is a bit dated nowadays. Upgrading to 4.0.3 production or even the 4.1 EA2 (early adopter) release will, in general, give you a better experience.
    Best wishes,
    Gary
