  • How do  I do a backup using a disk image file and SuperDuper?

    The external drive won't mount on the desktop even though the power light shows up on the external drive case. I want to back up the files on the computer, Powerbook G4 Panther in a hurry as the computer keeps shutting down on me.
    I opened up SuperDuper which I normally use for backups and there was a message that said it couldn't find the drive or something like that. Then there was a window to choose where I was copying from, and it came up with the hard drive name. Then another window came up with a disk image icon which is the place to copy to. I named it "Copyofharddrive", but I am not sure if this is right. I then pressed "Click" and then it told me it was going to erase the volume "Copyofharddrive" and asked if that was OK.
    I am scared of doing the wrong thing and erasing my hard drive. I only have 12GB left on my hard drive too. I am trying to copy 100GB of data onto the disk image file. Will that work out?
    I have never done this before. I don't understand disk image files. I just want to back up the data so that if the computer or the hard drive crashes I can then put the files on another computer.
    Is a disk image a suitable way to do a backup and can I restore the hard drive exactly as it was on the hard drive on another hard drive using the disk image? Do I have enough space on the Powerbook to do the backup? Am I following the correct steps in doing the backup on Superduper? Why does it ask me if it's OK to erase the volume "Copyofharddrive" when I jsut created it?
    Thanks for all your help.

    If you only have 12 GBs of space on your hard drive then how will you fit 100 GBs of data into a disc image file on that hard drive?
    If your external drive is not functioning then you cannot do any kind of backup to it. And, you cannot backup your hard drive to your hard drive.
    What you need is another external hard drive with at least 100 GBs or more of free space that you could use for a backup. However, if you have the unpaid version of SuperDuper, then SD will erase the backup drive before making a full clone of your internal drive.

  • Restored a Snow Leopard TM Backup using Leopard disk

    I needed to restore a Snow Leopard hard drive but I couldn't find my Snow Leopard disk. I proceeded to use the Leopard disk to restore my Snow Leopard Time Machine backup. After the restore, The computer would not boot up.(Gray Screen) Would this be because I used the Leopard disk instead of the Snow Leopard disk? If so, I suppose finding the Snow Leopard disk is paramount to properly restore and boot the drive. If not, how would I go about getting my computer to boot?
    Thanks

    yes. this absolutely can not be done. there are file system differences between leopard and snow leopard which leopard restore utility will not understand. using it to do a full system restore of a snow leoaprd system will invariably result in a nonfunctioning system. you need to find your snow leopard disk.

    Waiting for kind reply ... ...You must not use or treat Expdp or logical backup as the Backup which can be used for future purpose. Please search forums their are so many links you lan find out and so many people told many time.. even ORACLE suggest that.
    Go for Custom backups and RMAn backups.

  • Migrate Oracle 11g database from Windows To Linux using RMAN hot / cold  backup ?

    Hi Friends,
    Is it possible to Migrate Oracle 11g database from Windows To Linux using RMAN hot / cold  backup ? ( as i would like to perform Point In Time recovery)
    (or) The only way is to use RMAN convert as mentioned here  - Transporting Data Across Platforms
    (or) Is there any other method (except exp/imp and data pump)
    Regards,
    DB

    HI
    his post describes the procedure required to migrate a database from Windows to Linux using the RMAN Convert Database command.
    Both Windows and Linux platforms have the same endian format, which makes possible to transfer the whole database, making the migration process very straightforward and simple.
    To migrate between platforms that have a different endian format, Cross Platform Transportable Tablespaces (XTTS) needs to be used instead.
    List of Steps Needed to Complete the Migration
    The migration process is simple, but as it has several steps it is convenient to be familiar with them before running it.
    1. Check platform compatibility between source and target OS
    2. Start the database in read only mode
    3. Check database readiness for transport from Windows to Linux using DBMS_TDB.CHECK_DB
    4. Check if there are any external objects
    5. Execute the Rman Convert database command
    6. Copy converted datafiles, generated Transport Script and Parameter File to Linux
    7. Edit the init.ora for the new database
    8. Edit the Transport Script and Parameter File changing the windows paths to Linux Paths
    9. Execute the Transport Script
    10.Change the Database ID
    11.Check database integrity
    Thank you

  • How to create backup using sql commands

    can i create a backup using sql/sqlplus commands

    I would actually advice you to use RMAN, instead of backup using sql commands, but if you want or have a requirment to do so..
    First off all you should ensire that your databasse is in archilog mode.. (ALL PRODUCTION DATABASES should be in archivelog mode)
    you can do it using sql*plus
    archive log list
    Then if you would like to make a cold backup (the only one posible in noarchivelog mode)
    ypu have to
    shutdown immediate
    copy all database files (you don't need to copy redo logs) to another device
    startup - to startup database
    Actually I will suggest that your read User manager Recovery guide from oracle documentation

  • Tablespace level backup using data pump

    Hi,
    Im using 10.2.0.4 on RHEL 4,
    I have one doubt, can we take a tablespace level backup using data pump,
    bt i dnt wnt to use it for transportable tablespace.
    thanks.

    Yes, you can only for the tables in that tablespace only.
    Use the TABLESPACES option to export list of tablespaces.*here all the tables in that tablespaces will be exported*.
    and you must have the EXP_FULL_DATABASE role to use tablespace mode.
    Have a look at this,

  • Cold backup using RMAN

    Dear All,
    db_version :10.2.0.4
    os_version:Window 2003 server
    Environment:Test
    I wish to perform cold backup using RMAN for the same i want to know following :
    1. What is the script / command ?
    2. How to restore cold backup completely ( ex:- if i lost all my data,redo and archives )
    3. Is it mandatory to open the database in RESETLOG mode after recovery ( since i have a cold backup ) ?
    Thanks in advance

    A "Cold" Backup is called a "Consistent" Backup.
    See http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/bkup003.htm#sthref297
    Backup :
    From the RMAN command line :
    SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE
    STARTUP MOUNT
    BACKUP DATABASE
    BACKUP CURRENT CONTROLFILE  -- to get the controlfile in a separate backupsetRestore :
    STARTUP MOUNT
    RESTORE DATABASE
    ALTER DATABASE OPENIf you use an SPFILE, you can have an SPFILE backup included automatically with the controlfile backupset with CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON and CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT ...

I would like to backup the filesystems directly.
    3. Which unix backup tools are used to backup the individual filesystems?
    4. How do we restore the filesystems to the test server? Thanks for your advise. Abdul Edited by: Abdul Rahim Shaik on Feb 8, 2010 12:10 PM

    Hi,
    I am not sure about your OS as you have not mentioned it...
    If it is HP-UX then you can use "fbackup" backup for filesystem...
    and IGNITE to backup volume groups..
    fbackup will backup the filesystem only... but IGNITE backup creates bootable media for recovery...
    With IGNITE (make_tape_recovery) backup you can backup individual volume group.
    you can see the man pages for the details...
    #man fbackup
    #man make_tape_recovery
    It will be more easy to guide you if you provide your OS and Filesystem layout and what you need to backup...
    If you still want to use "tar" command for backup, use "--no-recursion" option to backup single directory
    Regards.

  • Error in Database backup using RMAN.

    Hi
    While taking full online backup using RMAN i got the following error.
    ORA-19566: exceeded limit of 0 corrupt blocks for file /oracle/DEV/sapdata2/dev640_6/dev640.data6
    Please help me how to resolve this issue.

    Hi,
    Please perform DBverify Job and Also analyze the alert<SID>.log file for your Database to get more information about such logical or physical corruption.  You may require Block level recovery for the complained DB Files. Please refer this useful document " [Early Detection and Correction of Data Block Corruptions Using RMAN |http://www.ioug.org/client_files/members/select_pdf/04q4/RMAN.pdf]" and share the same with your Oracle DBA.
    You can execute the following commands to get information about corrupted block(s), if its there.
    select * from v$backup_corruption;
    select * from v$database_block_corruption;

  • [Oracle VM 3.1.1] vm backup

    Hi all,
    What is the best method or method that You use to backup full vm`s?
    Thanks in advance

    There are some methods that can be used. There is only one method that can really take a hot "backup". Most storage arrays can do "snaphosts" or offer "replication" between storage devices. If you have this ability, you should use it. If not, then you will need to go with a guest based backup strategy. There is no method/product that I know of.... that will take a hot backup of a VM guest from either the VM manager or the servers themselves. I am sure there will be a product along soon. 3.1.1 has the ability to create a NFS share of any repository from a VM server. Currently, that share can not be backed up "hot". Yet, the ocfs2 filesystem should give a product the ability to do a hot backup. There just isn't a product offered at the moment.
    I personally use kick start scripting to rapidly deploy a VM guest. I can have a customized VM guest back up and running in a matter of minutes. I then use my backup product to restore the guest to its former function. Its no different than backing up any non VM environment.

  • Validate backup using RMAN

    Hi,
    This is a 9i RAC environment. RMAN is used to take the backup. The database is running fine and backup is taken using cron 3 times a week. There is no error messages generated when the backup is taken.
    However, in the alert log file I noticed that there are corrupted blocks in the backup files. I tried to validate the backup using (restore database validate) but I ended up with erros. Then, I tried (validate backupset) to check the corruption and I am getting different errors. 2 of the backupsets says that the data file can not be verfied. 1 of the backupset throws ORA-06510: PL/SQL: unhandled user-defined exception
    Can anyone guide me with this problem?
    Thank you in advance

    Sorry,
    but there is one big problem: you don't backup your archivelogs!
    Apart from a series of redundant commands (about the only required command is 'backup database', the rest needs to be relegated to house keeping scripts), this script doesn't result in a valid backup at all!
    What I do is
    ORAENV_ASK="NO"
    export ORACLE_SID=${DB}
    . $ORAENV
    case ${TRACE:-""} in
    T) set -x ;;
    esac
    dg="`date +%a`"
    case "$dg" in
    Mon) LVL=0
    Tue|Wed|Thu|Sat|Sun) LVL=2
    Fri) LVL=1
    *) LVL=2
    esac
    echo $LVL
    exec 1>>$LOGFILE 2>&1 # redirect alle output naar de logfile
    # fase 1, maak een backup van de database. Bail out als dit fout gaat
    rman <<EOD
    connect target ${UID}
    set echo on;
    run
    backup incremental level ${LVL}
    tag="db${TIMESTAMP}" database filesperset=1
    format '${BACKUP_DIR}/${ORACLE_SID}/backup_%d_db_%T_%s_%p.bck'
    plus archivelog tag="arch${TIMESTAMP}"
    skip inaccessible
    format '${BACKUP_DIR}/${ORACLE_SID}/backup_%d_arch_%T_%s_%p.bck'
    restore database validate;
    And in my case I ran
    configure controlfile autobackup on, and I set the format appropiately.
    The main advantage ot this code is you can always use
    list backupset tag="db<yyyymmdd>"
    and you don't need to think about the tag.
    resync catalog is implicit with autobackup on;
    Autobackup is required anyway, as the autobackup saves you from loosing the catalog.
    backup database validate only ensures the database can be backed up (ie the corruption is not in the datafiles). It looks like in your case the corruption is in the backup.
    Obviously, due to legal regulations, I can not post the complete script.
    It is also a bit smarter than I have shown here. When this phase fails, it automatically deletes the backup, using the tag mechanism.

  • Restoring Incremental Backup using Netbackup

    Hi,
    Need your help. We have a backup of our Oracle 10g Database(one full backup and one incremental backup). The full backup (level0) is done by Netbackup and the incremental backup is done by local rman.
    Now we want to restore the database. I have modified the script of Netbackup to restore the controlfile of incremental backup and allocate 2 channels for tape and disk. Our incremental backup resides in disk. Is the script we used below correct?
    RUN {
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch00 TYPE DISK;
    send 'NB_ORA_CLIENT=prod01, NB_ORA_SERV=NAS';
    RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM '/rman/backup/incremental/ctl_PROD_c-86955024-20101221-
    03';
    ALTER DATABASE MOUNT;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch00;
    RUN {
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch00 TYPE 'SBT_TAPE';
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch01 TYPE DISK;
    send 'NB_ORA_CLIENT=prod01, NB_ORA_SERV=NAS';
    #SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 138730 thread 1;
    RESTORE DATABASE;
    RECOVER DATABASE;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch00;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch01;
    thanks,
    Benjo

    Hi benjo,
    You cannot allocate two types of channels at the same time so you should try a three step approach.
    (Every time create a new connection to the target.)
    Restore controlfile
    No need for:
    send 'NB_ORA_CLIENT=prod01, NB_ORA_SERV=NAS';exit
    Restore database from tape.
    remove from your second run block
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch01 TYPE DISK;
    RECOVER DATABASE;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch01;exit
    Than create a recover command with disk channels
    basicly remove the tape channel and restore commands from your second run block and add
    alter database open resetlogs;Regards,
