Oracle8i works (at last) under Linux

I think that this is the news many were waiting for.
I have installed succesfully Oracle8i under Linux SuSe 6.2
I must thank SuSe developers because they solved many problems
and bugs of the base software and nearly all the problems of the
patch.
What you need in order to install it are only 2 files.
815ship.tgz (signle file for Oracle8i EE)
and the patch file from SuSe
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/SuSE-Linux/suse_update/Oracle/oracle815-su
se62.tar.gz
The FTP site is quote slow and you will need a lots of time to
download it, but after over a month of unesuful tries with any
Linux and any JRE and anything possible, this time the
installation went so smooth i thought it was a dream :)
The patch from SuSe lack of something important: a brief
documentation.
But this is what you have to do.
Uncompress the ship815.tgz on a directory of your choice (e.g.
/mnt/oracle8i)
Install the .rpm packages from SuSe patch on your system
(javarunt and tcl75lib BUT NOT the orarun.rpm)
Than use tar -xzf on the tar.gz file of your version (EE or STD)
It will create a directory that contain the true patch.
Follow the README instructions.
When you finished the installation than install the last .rpm
package (orarun).
After that you have to edit the rc.config in order to set the
path correctly for your installation. (this is on of the reason i
say that it lack a little of documentation)
And you have finished. Oracle8i will work fine getting up at the
startup and shutting down when you shut down.
I have had no problems and the computer wasn't anything special
(K6-2 380, 64Mb ram)
Have fun at last :)

OK Michael...I'm gonna go pick up Suse 6.2! Thank you and those
that have worked to make 8i function on your distibution. The
main reason that I will be switching is that from you efforts I
feel comfortable that SuSe is dedicated to its users desires and
the requirements necessary for Linux to excel in the enterprise!
Cheers,
Keehan

  • Shockwave doesn't work on firefox under linux mint 17, qiana

    I use Firefox 33.0 Mozilla Firefox for linux Mint: mint - 1.0
    I use linux mint 17, qiana. Cinnemon, 32-bit.
    As extensions for Firefox I use Adblock Plus 2.6.6.
    As plugins I use: DivX webplayer 1.4.0.233, Iced-Tea webplugin 1.5, OPenH264 video codec provoded by Cisco systems, Inc. 1.1, Quicktime plug-in 7.6.6. , Shockwave Flash 11.2.202.408, VLC Multimedia plugin (Compatible videos, 3.10.1), Windows Media Player plugin (compatible Videos 3.10.1)
    When I surf on a page http://www.jkp.com/media/wysiwyg/MindReading/demo/content/dswmedia/loader.html
    I get the information: "a plugin is needed to play this content"
    Since this url was under a button "View shockwave Demo" on page http://www.jkp.com/uk/mindreading/demo/ I presume that the pluging that is needed is a "Shockwave Flash" plugin, but I have installed that.
    So what do I have to solve the problem?

    It is looking for the Shockwave (director) player and not the Flash player.
    Adobe does not provide Shockwave player for Linux, only on Mac OSX and Windows. Besides it is more for few games and learning stuff and it used very little compared to the Flash Player for most users.
    As you can see it is only for Windows and Mac OSX.

  • JMF code working under linux but not windows XP

    Hello everyone,
    I'm currently working on a nice cross-platform project involving sound producing. I decided to take a look at JMF and test it a bit to know if its features can suit me. I tried to make it works under windows, using a very simple sample of code. The system seems to play the sound as some console output detects the start and the end, but all i hear is a very short noise ( 1/2second ) like a "CLIK" and nothing else. I tested the code under linux, using the same computer and it works just fine, playing the same wave nicely and entirely.
    some info:
    -i used the cross platform JMF, no performance pack ( i tried it , but still no result )
    -the code just opens a file dialog and plays the selected file
    -the selected file was always a very simple .wav
    -i did not use system classpath variables because i don't like it, i rather use local classpath ( which works fine too, no doubt about it )
    -i tested this little soft on 2 other computer using windows XP, and still got the same result.
    Please, have you got an idea about what's going on ?

  • Does db_hotbackup work under Linux 3.0?

    Does anyone know how to build BDB such that db_hotbackup works under Linux?  I always get
       db_hotbackup: BDB5129 Cannot copy data from a PRIVATE environment
       db_hotbackup: BDB5043 HOT BACKUP FAILED!
    I'm using SUSE Linux 3.0.82-0.7-default, and get the same messages under RedHat 2.6.32-431.17.1.el6.x86_64.  It actually did work under a free EC2 instance running Amazon Linux 3.10.42-52.145.amzn1.x86_64, but I'd love to make it work under SUSE.
    None of the configuration advice in "Chapter 7. Building Berkeley DB for UNIX/POSIX" has worked for me.
    [ This is a follow-on to my question of July 13, 2014: "Linux, want DB_PRIVATE off". ]

    Thanks for the tip.  I had some success, by converting the sample code to "use BerkeleyDB" (instead of "use DB_File") and explicitly creating an environment.  It was tricky to do because it appears that to create an environment deliberately requires initializing both the transaction and memory pool subsystems (is this documented somewhere?).  It finally worked to create the environment with
    my $env = new BerkeleyDB::Env
                    -Home => 'test',
                    -Flags => DB_CREATE | DB_INIT_TXN | DB_INIT_MPOOL,
            or die "No env created";
    The odd thing is that I don't need to create an environment on Solaris, OS X, or Amazon Linux, ie, the DB_File sample code I supplied worked with db_hotbackup.  But I do have to create it explicitly on SLES and RedHat.

  • Runtime.exec() does not work under Linux

    Hi,
    I have a generic application runner class that runs an external
    program and redirects stdout/stderr to a buffer/file.
    While everythings works just fine under Windows, I get the
    following exception under Linux trying to run the Java interpreter
    'java':
    java.io.IOException: "/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/bin/java": not found

    at java.lang.Runtime.execInternal(Native Method)
    at java.lang.Runtime.exec(Runtime.java:546)
    at java.lang.Runtime.exec(Runtime.java:413)
    I have checked that the file /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/bin/java
    exists.
    Any help appreciated!
    Marc

    can I ask how you solved it? I am having a problem
    with quotes just now to and it might help me!I simply tested what the current platform is and
    only used quotes under Windows.

  • JCombox does not work under linux (fedora) could you help me???

    Hi All,
    I am implementing a GUI for a linux application. This GUI works fine under windows system. But the JCombobox does not work under Linux system. Would you help me to solve it? Thank you very much!..
    The problem is that I cannot select any other item except the first item in the dropdown box of JCombobox. There is no event generated when I click the combobox, while events are generated for other Buttons.
    This problem exists for the following code when I maximize the window. When the window is minimize to some extend in my problem, it is OK.
    Here is the simplify code:

    Which way you prefer with actionPerformed should work either way.
    I think your problem was too many unnecessary Panels and set all attributes before it is added, perhaps,

    I'm attempting to make a Breakout version of java (if I go through with it) and the first issue that I encountered is that I can't change the color of the moving rectangle (you know, the thing you hit the ball with). I tried the code under Textpad on a Windows machine and that worked fine, but not under Netbeans in Linux using jdk 1.6.0_01.
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class Breakout extends Applet implements MouseListener, MouseMotionListener{
         int mouse_x, mouse_y;
         Thread t;
         public void init(){
              addMouseListener(this);
              addMouseMotionListener(this);
         public void start(){
              t= new Thread();
              t.start();
         public void run(){}
         public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseEntered(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseExited(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mousePressed(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseMoved(MouseEvent me){
              mouse_x = me.getX();
              if(mouse_x>=400)
                   mouse_x=400;
              repaint();
         public void stop() {}
         public void destroy(){ }
         public void paint(Graphics g){
              setBackground(Color.black);
              setForeground(Color.white); //doesn't work
              g.drawRoundRect(mouse_x, 600, 50, 20, 20, 20);
    }I'm wondering if it's because the Applet under Linux uses the Native l&f theme while appets under Windows uses the Windows l&f theme.
    Any thoughts would be helpful!

    setForeground(Color.white); //doesn't work
    g.drawRoundRect(mouse_x, 600, 50, 20, 20, 20);Change this to:
    g.setColor(Color.WHITE);
    g.drawRoundRect(mouse_x, 600, 50, 20, 20, 20);You can move the background setting into method init(), calling it once is enough.
    I'm wondering if it's because the Applet under Linux
    uses the Native l&f theme while appets under Windows
    uses the Windows l&f theme.You use java.awt.Applet, so you use AWT which means there's no L&F theme (as in Swing) but it's native components being responsible.

  • C1E & EIST...¿not work under Linux?

  • Does Palm software work under Linux?

    I'm about to buy the new ASUS Eec PC901 miniature computer with Linux installed.  I have been using for many years a faithful old Tungsten E and would like to know if the desktop software will run under Linux which is installed on the 901.
    Advice on this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • ARIAL FONT IN REPORTS(WINDOWS), NOT SHOWN CORRECTLY UNDER LINUX

    Our Reports are developed under Windows (Report Builder 9.0.4.0.33 and Windows 2000/Windows XP) and generated under Linux (IAS 10.1.2.0.2 with Red Hat Advanced Server). The Report Output is a PDF, that will be downloaded by the user with WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT. This works fine, but fonts are not shown correctly in the PDF, especially ARIAL, which is the font we use.
    I have run the Fontsolution Configuration Script from Metalink, but we still have a problem.
    When you look at the font.pdf, wich is the testreport from fontsolutions, some sizes and styles of Arial are printed correctly others not.
    Arial 8 is ok, but Arial 10 and Arial 12 are something like Times New Roman.
    Arial 12 Bolded is correct, but Arial 12 italic and Arial 12 bold italic are also not
    the Arial Font.
    How can we correct this problem?
    Regards
    Udo

    # Each line is of the form:
    # <Face>.<Size>.<Style>.<Weight>.<Width>.<CharSet> = \
    # <Face>.<Size>.<Style>.<Weight>.<Width>.<CharSet>
    # The <Face> must be the name (string/identifier) of a font face. The
    # <Style>, <Weight>, <Width>, and <CharSet> may either be a numeric
    # value or a predefined identifier/string. For example, both US7ASCII
    # and 1 are valid <CharSet> values, and refer to the same character set.
    # The <Size> dimension must be an explicit size, in points.
    # The following is a list of recognized names and their numeric
    # equivalents:
    # Styles Numeric value
    # Plain 0
    # Italic 1
    # Oblique 2
    # Underline 4
    # Outline 8

    # Normal 5
    # Semiexpand 6
    # Expand 7
    # Extraexpand 8
    # Ultraexpand 9
    # Styles may be combined; you can use plus ("+") to delimit parts of a
    # style. For example,
    # Arial..Italic+Overstrike = Helvetica.12.Italic.Bold
    # are equivalent, and either one will map any Arial that has both Italic
    # and Overstrike styles to a 12-point, bold, italic Helvetica font.
    # All strings are case-insensitive in mapping. Font faces are likely to
    # be case-sensitive on lookup, depending on the platform and surface, so
    # care should be taken with names used on the right-hand side; but they
    # will be mapped case-insensitively.
    # See your platform documentation for a list of all supported character
    # sets, and available fonts.
    # BUGS:
    # o Should accept a RHS ratio (e.g., "Helv = Arial.2/3").

    # NOTES ON PRECEDENCE OF PDF SECTIONS:
    # If you have entries for a same font in many PDF sections, then Font
    # Aliasing entry will take precedence over Font Embedding entry. Entries
    # in Font Embedding will take precedence over the entries in Font Subsetting
    # section.
    # Generic entries for a font must follow more specific entries for the same
    # font. For instance, if you want to subset helvetica Plain, helvetica Bold,
    # helvetica Italic and helvetica Bold-Italic fonts, your entries must be:
    # [ PDF:Subset ]
    # helvetica..Italic.Bold.. = "Arialbi.ttf"
    # helvetica...Bold.. = "Arialb.ttf"
    # helvetica..Italic... = "Ariali.ttf"
    # helvetica..... = "Arial.ttf"
    # If helvetica..... entry appears in the top of the list, all the styles of
    # helvetica font in the layout will be subset as helvetica Plain font.

    # The fourth field is a long description of the printer. This will be
    # presented to the user in the "Choose Printer" dialog window.
    # The fifth field is the printer description file to be used. For
    # PostScript printers it is the PPD file of the printer. (This field is
    # currently unused for ASCII printers.)
    # You can use default.ppd for the description file if you don't have a
    # PPD file for the printer, but it's best to use the correct PPD file
    # for the printer.
    # You must fill in at least the first two fields (printer name and
    # type). If the version is empty, it defaults to "1"; if the long name

    # printers, you must fill in the description file name.
    # You don't have to update this file to use any printer. The printer

    # as well as associate a printer description file to the printer. You
    # should list all printers accessible to users here, however, to
    # simplify selecting a printer.
    # The first entry in this file will be used as the default printer, if

    If you want to make platform independent use of fonts, you have to use the family, such as sans serif.
    Arial is owned by monotype (http://monotype.com/). You have to contact them if you wish to redistribute it with your application. They also might have a suitable version that renders nicely under linux.

  • Problems importing to 8.1.6 SE under Linux from 8.1.6 Solaris

    Dear collegues,
    We used Oracle 8.1.6 SE under linux mostly for development and have a need do import production database into developement server. We recently upgraded RedHat 5.2 to RedHat 6.2 and omved to Oracle 8.1.6, but currently expirienced next problem:
    IMP-00003: ORACLE error 1874 encountered
    ORA-01874: time zone hour must be between -12 and 13
    IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully
    Import file made under Solaris when timezone set to usual POSIX value. Under Linux I tried to set TZ both to values like 'GMT+6' and according new glibc docs to 'Asia/Novosibirsk'. When I export and then import data on linux I have allthings OK. If I have files from 8.0.5 It's OK too. Does anyone expirienced such problems? Any suggestion?
    Serge.

    OK, so i followed your instructions to the letter (several times), sure I get past the 80% bug but now I have new erros coming up , -"Error in invoking target install of makefile /usr/oracle/sqlplus/lib/ins_sqlplus.mk". I get a whole series of these errors for various mk files. These errors apear during the link phase of the install, prior to the glibc workaround I was not getting this. I am a newbie to Linux and trying to give it a serious go but so far I have had little luck
    Any help appreciated.

    newbieEverything should work, except for the target pack and the non-existent Linux Pegoda driver.1. The is no seperate Linux distribution. You just need a Linux distribution for Eclipse.JCOP Tools plugin should work under Linux, except for the target pack and the non-existent Pegoda driver for Linux.1. There is no seperate Linux distribution. You just need the Linux distribution for Eclipse.
    2. Prior to JCOP Tools 3.1.2 the last time something was mentioned about Linux was in the release notes of 3.1.1b . In version 3.2.0 IBM added a linux_support page to the JCOP Tools user guide (see release notes and linux_support page below).
    3. There shouldn't be any problems with the generic simulation. The target pack runs only with Windows though.

    Overview
    The current JCOP Tools release now also offer a version for the popular Linux
    operating system. Both the Windows and Linux verson provide more or less the same
    functionality, and JCOP application development can thus fully succeed on Linux systems.
    Nevertheless, installation of the JCOP Tools differ between Windows and Linux
    where the Linux version does not provide a simple installer as in case of Windows.
    Additionally, the Linux version expects a properly setup Muscle PCSC installation
    as soon as you want to use them together with physical, real cards. As Muscle
    PCSC is still not shipped with most Linux distributions, you must download and
    install them separately from the JCOP Tools.

    Software Requirements
    Linux distribution
    The JCOP Tools simulation has been developed on a Fedora Core 6 system, but should also work in case of
    many other recent Linux distributions.
    Java Development Kit
    The JCOP Tools have been developed and tested with the Sun JDK 1.4.2_13-b06
    for Linux. Your success with other Development Kits may vary as there are
    partly subtle differences across the different devlopment kits.
    PCSC
    The JCOP Tools use PCSC to talk with real cards on Linux. Most distributions
    do not ship with Linux PCSC by default (Fedora Core 6 does), you must thus download it fromhttp://www.linuxnet.com
    and install it by yourself. If you are used to software installation under Linux,
    and are not afraid of compiling and installing software packages, this should
    not be a hard problem. You have to download both the base PCSC package
    (including PCSC daemon and client libraries) and separately the driver
    for the reader you want to use. The PCSC package contains a test program
    which should tell you whether your installation is set up correctly and
    communicating with a card works. The JCOP Tools have been reported to
    work together with Muscle PCSC version 1.3.1-7.
    JPCSC
    The JCOP Tools are shipped with JPCSC which you can also download athttp://www.linuxnet.com. JPCSC
    is a JNI library which offers Java applications the access to PC/SC functions
    by mapping their requests to an underlying native PC/SC implementation. The JCOP
    Tools - mostly written in Java - thus depend on JPCSC to communicate with real cards
    on Linux. JPCSC depends on a properly installed and setup PC/SC environment.
    Especially, the JAVA_LIBRARY_PATH should list the directories where the
    PC/SC client libraries and the native JPCSC library libjpcsc.so ( downloadable as binary from
    Windows Binary Download Here )
    are installed, the CLASSPATH variable should list th___
    Miscellaneous
    What should work
    As soon as you setup your system correctly, there should only be minor differences
    between using JCOP Tools on Windows or on Linux. Emulating a real JCOP,
    debugging, shell, cap-file conersion should all be possible as in case of Windows.
    What is missing
    No drivers or tools are currently available for using JCOP30's in contactless
    mode. If you need such support, please contact directly NXP
    at for further assistance.

    Read the other threads more carefully next time.
    Alex Voitov posted this ftp site:
    ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/software/libs/glibc/hjl/sdk/2.1/
    click README.Oracle8i.
    I also did what you did, but that was not enough, so I tried following the instructions in the README file mentioned above, and then I got oracle installed in Redhat 7.1 with no problems.
    After you install Oracle, you may also want to follow the instructions below.
    Posted by Kamal:
    <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>
    Oracle Version 8.1.7
    Linux Redhat 7.0
    While installing Oracle you may encounter the error 'not able to connect to oracle'
    during database creation. This is due to glibc package problem.
    Please do the following
    1. Install the compat-glibc RPM for 2.1.3.x
    (This is on the Redhat 7.0 CDs)
    2. cd to the directory where compat-glibc installed the files (for me it's
    /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/lib).
    3. Copy the following files to $ORACLE_HOME/lib:
    libc-2.1.3.so
    libpthread.so
    libdl.so
    ld-linux.so.2
    For me, several of these are symbolic links, so you'll need to copy the target of the
    symbolic link and rename it to the link name when you copy it to $ORACLE_HOME/lib.
    For example, if ls -l shows:
    ld-linux.so.2 -> ld-2.1.3.so
    libc-2.1.3.so
    libdl.so -> libdl.so.2
    libpthread.so -> libpthread.so.0
    Then you will:
    cp ld-2.1.3.so $ORACLE_HOME/lib/ld-linux.so.2
    cp libc-2.1.3.so $ORACLE_HOME/lib
    cp libdl.so.2 $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libdl.so
    cp libpthread.so.0 $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libpthread.so
    4. Create a file in $ORACLE_HOME/lib called libc.so with the following contents (as a
    single line):
    GROUP ( /lib/libc-2.1.3.so /lib/ld-linux.so.2 /libc_nonshared.a )
    Substitute the value of $ORACLE_HOME for and the location of the compat-glibc directory
    for . For example:
    My $ORACLE_HOME is:
    /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7
    and my compat-glibc directory is:
    /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/lib
    so the GROUP line looks like this for me:
    GROUP (/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/lib/libc-2.1.3.so
    /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/lib/ld-linux.so.2
    /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/lib/libc_nonshared.a)
    This is all one line.
    5. cd $ORACLE_HOME/bin
    6. Run the following command from the UNIX prompt:
    relink all
    All of the Oracle software, including the assitants, will work fine now.
    I have used this technique for RedHat 7.0 with the 2.2.16 kernel.
    Thanks to Richard Rankin for this simple and reliable method
    Regards

    Says I must have a newer  kernel, 2.4.21 or higher before Linux would work with all the features of the MSI 875P Neo motherboard.
    With a lot of help from a friend at work the new kernel, 2.4.22, has been installed.  But it’s disabled my NVIDIA driver for the FX 5600.  And the NVIDIA driver won’t install under the new kernel, returning an error message saying:
         “ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.”
    I’ve been studying the support documentation, the README text file for the driver linked to on the NVIDIA download page.  But I’ve not found an answer to this problem.
    The NVIDIA page, under support, says to contact the manufacturer if you have any problems.  So here I am.  Any suggestions?
    Any estimates on how long it will be before the NVIDIA driver set is updated to support Linux kernel 2.4.22 ?

  • Java running under linux with crontab

    I'm having a problem:
    i want to run a java program under linux with crontab.
    my classes are in a directory and aren't in a package. i run em by invoking ./start which is a small script that i wrote. The script is in the same dir as the classes and invokes java by "java Main >>logjava.txt " but this doesn't seem to work all i get is an empty logfile
    i need to run the program every day at 0800 so i inserted the following in crontab:
    0 8 * 1-5 /var/"path"/start > logjava (where path is the path to the classes dir)
    if i run the cmdline from anywhere on the prompt i get the result i want. I think it's because the cron runs it from the root dir thus making java unable to find the classes
    Any suggestions would be welcome. or can some1 tell me how to make linux executables from the java (i usually use jsmooth for the windows exe)

    You can execute several commands in the process started by cron. You separate them using semicolons.
    Have you tried a cron entry like this:
    0 8 * 1-5 cd /var/"path";pwd;echo $PATH; ./start > logjavaOr, you may need to make sure the process started by cron gets the same environment as your interactive shells do, by explicitly loading your setup or .login scripts:
    0 8 * 1-5 . $HOME/.setup;cd /var/"path";pwd;echo $PATH; ./start > logjava
