Organising photos

What is the best practice for organising photos?
I notice that only the images in the image folder show in the
assets panel.
Should all the images on the site be in images folder, or
should I make other folders outside the image folder for my photo
albums?
I plan to make albums using Fireworks.

Although I have an iMAC, I use Adobe Photoshop Elements, which came bundled with my scanner. In it, you can customize whatever layout you wish fairly easily.

  • Best Structure for Organising Photos - iPhoto wouldn't do it, can Aperture?

    Hi,
I was wondering if Aperture would let me organise photos in this way:
I have 'groupings' of files of pictures. For example 20 or so files containing university pictures inside a folder called 'university'. I then have 10 or so files containing pictures of the family inside a folder called 'family'.
What I would like to do is view the top folder (university or family) with a thumbnail, then go into it and view the subsequent folders as thumbnails, and then go into one of those and view all of the pictures as usual.
The problem is, if the 2nd level folders are all projects, I can't view them inside their respective 'top level' folder. Aperture (as iPhoto) appears to only let me view all 'projects' or all 'pictures'.
I tried having albums inside projects in the hope that clicking on the project would show thumbnails for each album but still with no luck.
I've had a look at the Aperture guide but this has proven unfruitful also.
Can anyone tell me if Aperture can do this and maybe if so, how it would do this because I'm at a loss?
    Many thanks!!

Short answer is no. Neithr application is a folder-based "nesting" system.
    They are databases.
Aperture is superior to iPhoto because you can have folders and within those you can have projects, and within those (or alongside in the folder as well) you can have albums, so it will work for you that far. It sounds like you've taken it that far at least.
The option to view as thumbnails is not available because of the skimming feature. All projects are displayed in such a way that all photos are visible, but the "top" photo is the representative key photo. That's similar to what you want to do, at least from a user interface POV, but it's a default behaviour, so the manner in which you want it to work is not how it can ever work. You cannot "nest" using key photos representing sub-folders.
Databases require you to organize your content along more rigid forms than file/older structures. Databases can handle a far larger volume of data and organize it with speed and efficiency as a result. You'll either have to change your system or use a non-Apple product.

  • Organising photos on the iphone

How do you organise photos (inc those taken on iphone and those drag+dropped via 'automatically add' dir) within the iphone.
The only solution i can find is sync'ing - which is of no use as i have photos stored across multiple volumes and do not want to disrupt this organisation.
I cant find any apps to do it. Am i missing the obvious, surely this function exists!?!

For the native Photo's app, there isn't one - there's no way to organize pics directly on the phone.
You'd need to put your pics into one of the file management apps (File Magnet, Files, Dropbox, etc.) and manage them within that app (they'd be transferred to the phone via Wi-Fi, not through an iTunes sync).

  • Organise photos

I'm using iPhoto to organise photos but when they transfer to the iphone there a different order.
I've sorted them the way I want on iphoto

    Calypso,
Huh. You buy an application THEN think about how you're going to use it... Sorry - couldn't resist the dig - I did exactly the same thing.
Rather than repeat a whole bunch of stuff, do a quick search on organising and organisation in this forum - you'll find a whole bunch of prior threads with approaches and ideas. Also try spelling those words with a "z" to capture the people wot don't use English spelling.
The good Mr Boyer has a nice article on his website that you'll probably locate the link to in his search, and bagelturf.com is also worth a look.
Oh, how do I arrange? Blue folder called "my projects", containing another blue folder labelled 2001, 2002 etc. The year folders contain the projects and albums etc. I also have a separate blue folder called Work in Progress, where there is a default project called "Incoming" for the imports, and projects for stuff I'm currently working on.
    Enjoy the journey!

  • Can I organise photos into albums within iCloud Photo Library?

i Understand that edits / deletes etc in iCloud Photo Libary will be reflected on all my iOS devices but can I organise my photos into albums using iCloud photo library?
basically I want to take photos on my iPhone, review them on my iPad, delete the ones I don't want and keep the good ones in a relevant album (e.g. "Summer holiday 2014"). Then I want to be able to see identical albums on both my iPad and iPhone. From what I've seen so far, when I create an album and save a photo to it then that album is only local to that device?
    please help.

Are you saying it showed 800 photos before turning off iCloud photo library or that the 800 photos disappeared after you enabled iCloud photo library for the first time, the distinction is quite important.

  • Using FINDER - Organise photos in ascending chronological order

In windows you can put your photos in filename order, date created, modified etc the same as Finder, however I cannot find how to choose to put photos in ascending chronological date order. When you choose Date created it organises them backwards from the most recent photo. I would never show holiday snaps backwards nor read a book backwards. I have multiple cameras and would like to collate all the photos together in the order they were taken.
When you go into Adobe Bridge CS4 you can put into ascending or descending order and I tried to save this order into my Finder folder but it does not keep it.
I was trying to avoid renaming my originals at this stage. I did a test and renamed a batch of photos in Adobe Bridge and it renumbers the photos etc but when you go into finder under list view the numbers are like 1,3,4....19,2,20,21 Bizarre.
As I have too many photos and always change and add folders, I prefer not to organise albums etc through programs like iPhoto. I'd rather store the originals in FINDER (which is the equivalent to Windows). This way I can draw upon my photos via a photo organiser program if I want to for a specific project but can always find ALL of my photos at any time even if I've changed around the folders.
Why can't APPLE allow something so simple as date created ascending and keep their numbering systems in order??? I just want my photos in date order for storage in FINDER. Can anyone help?

...but only for date modified not created.
Not true. If you elect to have the Date Created field shown by checking the box for it in the Finder's View menu > View Options, it works exactly the same way for that field as for any other: just click the arrow to toggle the direction of sorting.
There is no "thumbnail view" in the Finder (again, see the View menu for the four view options: icons, list, columns, and cover flow. I presume icon view is what you mean. You can sort the icons in icon view by creation date, but you can't reverse the sort order in that view. If that's what you're complaining about, then you're simply discovering belatedly that the Finder isn't a photo management application and doesn't meet your need for one. You'll need to use one to do what you want to do, and when you choose the right one, you'll realize how much better it is for that purpose than the Finder — not just in that one way, but in lots of others as well.
Note that I'm not putting in a plug here for iPhoto, Bridge, GraphicConverter, Aperture, or any other app in particular: there are so many of them available that you should try a bunch and see which you like best.

  • Starting with a new iMac, best way to organise photos

My old computer macbook pro, was overflowing with badly filed photos, projects and files. As I start with a clean slate, my new iMac my question is the best way to be keeping things, I use illustrator mostly for complex surface patterns.  I have photos galore in i-photo, some even have the same auto file number sequence as I use multiple sd cards.  For my photos, should I use bridge, i-cloud, is iPhoto old school now.  I am not going to just dump my old stuff over and want to do it properly, I promise not to be unorganised on my new iMac (promise).  Also, a brief explanation of when you would use Raw, over Lightroom, over Photoshop or visa versa, or is it just a personal choice.  The more I learn about software the more confused I get.
    Thanks & much appreciated
    Regards Vicky

I do understand the reference to the cloud not being about a specific app. I also understand that you, Vicky, are not quite sure which app to use with your fresh start. I am not sure it is horrible to ask here which app(s), workflow, or organizational system might be best to institute, given access to all the various apps available in CC.
I am not quite sure what you are doing, or what your previous workflow was, in part because of your mention of Adobe Illustrator for complex surface patterns. Were it not for that, between your title, and your reference to photos galore, I might suggest Lightroom. It is indeed in part a database, with an ability to handle, and organise, a very large number of photos. In addition to good developing and batch developing capabilities, as well as an ability to tag, as well as add to and manipulate metadata on both import and export, I find it useful. Were I to begin using Illustrator more, which I actually plan to do, I believe I'd either lean on bridge a bit more, very likely in conjunction with exported LR files, or see if it were in any way possible to set up AI as an external editor in LR, though at this point I've no idea if that is possible, or desired.
As to a specific workflow and system of organization, I feel that is quite subjective. For myself, I find myself creating a Library in LR for each Year, (though I could see a pro event photographer creating one for each event), and then importing my SD cards by copying as DNG, embedding the RAW, and setting up the file name to be the YearxxxxMonthxxDayxx_Hourxx24MinutexxSecondxx, with folders created for each month and day. That way, everything is ordered chronologically, even within the OS folders, and the filenames are consistent and unique. I also add metadata for the creator, etc. I then create Collections for each shoot I'm actually focussing on. From LR I can jump to PS or external third party addons, and return after I am done.
There are specific books and videos out there suggesting efficient ways of organizing and processing large numbers of images, and there is no, one right way. It largely depends on what you are comfortable with, and the way your mind works.
Best of luck to you; I know I'll need a bit, and a bit of self-discipline to buckle down and institute a consistent system myself.

  • Best way to organise photos in iPhoto

    Hello All!
I'm starting to scan our family history photos and I'm wondering about the most efficient way to organise them in iPhoto. I'd like to benefit from the experience of others on this Forum.
A typical photo should contain the following information: a date, a place and people’s names (e.g., 1963 Béal Feirste Séamas Eilis) and in many cases more detailed information (exact location, description…) in the Information tab. As I see it, I have basically a choice between two methods:
    1. Type in detailed individual titles as outlined above and then create as needed smart folders per year, per person, per location.
    2. Select relevant photos and assign keywords and then create smart folders as above.
I'm using Aperçu to scan my photos and it requires me anyway to type in titles. In that case is assigning keywords a waste of time?
I’m interested in using a method that not only makes finding and sorting photos easy but which also would enable me to use the resources of iPhoto to save time typing in details.
I'm looking forward to reading your advice!
And thank you for taking the time to reply!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Here's how I manage family photos.
1 - upload from camera or scan into a folder on the Desktop.
2 - name the folder with the date of the photo and a brief description of the shoot: +03/08/08-Temecula Hot Rod Show+.
3 - sequentially rename the photos with the date taken and a brief description: 2008-03-08-TemRodShow-001.jpg, -002.jpg, etc. I use a file renaming application like Name Mangler or Renamer4Mac to do the batch renaming.
4 - import the folder into iPhoto which will create an Event with the title +03:08:08-Temecula Hot Rod Show+.
5 - now I use keywords to identify whose in the photo, where it was taken and any other information. That way I can search for a person and a place or a person and a day.
For scanned photos iPhoto will sort them based on the scanned date. You can use the Photos->Batch Change->Date menu option to set the correct date for those photos.
6 - Albums can be used to group photos for special projects like books, slideshows, etc. Photos in albums are only links back to the original photo in the Events folders and do not take up any hard drive space. Smart Albums can be use to group all photos which contain the criteria set in the Smart Album - like all photos between two dates that have the keyword for a certain person.
5 - You can add virtual folders in the left hand source pane to hold other folder, albums, slideshows, etc. - like a 2009 folder containing albums of family gatherings in that year, birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
Others here will add other approaches to managing photos. It's been my experience that a little upfront preparation (like the folder and renaming before importing) goes a long way in having a organized library later down the line. Sit down with pencil and paper and layout what you want to have as far as organization. Then you can create a library and add keywords ahead of time for family members (don't forget the pets), places, things (like your hot rod, boat, etc.) so that they can be added easily as you import without having to take the time to create those keywords.
Also I've found that if I put off adding keywords at the time of import or shortly afterward I get waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind.

  • Organising photos using Automator

    Hi,
I have been using several programs (iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture) over the past few years and therefore I have a lot of frames all organised in different ways!
I have decided that the best way for me is by date. A folder by year, and then a folder of the date. I have started using Bridge CS4 and I really like it. So I want to organise all the frames, I have 47,000. A high percentage is as described but I think iPhoto has messed things up a bit.
I need a tool / program / script, to go though all the photos and arrange them, into the correct folder.
Is Automator the best tool to organise this does have anyone have experience doing this, or is there a better tool?
    thanks for the help!

Writing a tool to do this for yourself is probably not the best choice. As someone with a lot of experience with programming, I can tell you that it's very easy to write code that seems like it's working well, but then destroys your personal data when unleashed on it.
I'd advise using one of the tools you already have meant for managing photos. For example, if you have Aperture, you could import all the images into Aperture, keeping them stored in their current location. Then use File -> Relocate Masters to move the image files to specific folders. You can very easily create smart albums that contain images in the groupings you wish to create, then relocate all the images in each of those groupings.

  • Organise photos to be able to backup in date folders on ipad / iPhone

Is there away to organize ipad / iPhone photos into folders that can then be backed up to a cloud? I have multiple devices and don't like that the photos all get dumped into one folder with no thought for date organising.  I want to have a cloud backup where the photos are already organised automatically by date, ideally month and year.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
    Paul

  • Organise photos in Aperture

    Hello,
I bought Aperture and I'm wondering how to organize my 5000 photos in it.
I want to work by year but what should I use for esach year (project, blue folder ??) ?
Inside a year what should I use to organize by event (album, yellow folder or projects ??).
What's the real difference between project and yellow folder and album ?
Thank you for your help to make my organization easy.

  • New mac user - organising photos

    hello
I am a new mac user comingfrom Windows
In windows i organised my photos into folders such asholidays, cars etc. Within a folder i would then have other folders i.e usa,oz. How can i do something simular in iphoto, I cant seem to put an albumwithin an album
    thanks
    Dave

Albums are individual items and not dynamically linked to any event or events that they were created from. If you want an album that is dynamically linked to one or more events create a smart album with the criteria "Event is XXXX". Then any photo added to that event will show up in the smart album.
To add a keyword to a photos select the photos and type Command+A to bring up the keyword pane:
Then click on an existing keyword button to add it to the photo.  The button will turn blue when it's been assigned to the photo.  If you want to create a new keyword click on the Edit Keywords button.
There is no print screen button.  You'll need to take a screenshot of the screen.  Open the utility named Grab and use the Capture menu to make your selection.  There are system wide key combinations that you can use to make a screenshot, full or partial. Open you System/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts pane, click on Screenshots and get the keystroke you need for a full screen or partial screen capture.

  • Organising photos in photoshop elements 11

I am new to the process. I have just downloaded hundreds of photos in their new files.
Whe opening up it suggests I should do a back up.
If I follow that procedure, the programme goes on a search in my laptop finding certain photos. Is this necessary because it never seems to stop the searching.
If I go further what path do I store the back up on, what file. What's the whole process?
    Jan

It is suggesting you do a backup because you have checked off in Preferences/Files that PSE suggest you do a backup. I would uncheck that unless you like to be reminded.
The backup option will backup your catalog and all your pictures. Backing up to an EHD is IMO the best way but you can also back up to disk, the cloud is a third option.
The backup program will only back up what is in your catalog, not search your disk for other pictures. I don't know why PSE is doing that. Could it be you have disconnected files and PSE is looking for those? Please clarify.
I would turn off the backup preference as a first step than do a backup to an EHD. This can be found at File/backup.
