OS 9 Apps on OS X - What am I missing?
Please forgive me if my questions are naive. I'm not much of a computer person.
I've been happy with my PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4.10 - great setup. Until this week, I also had an old G3 running OS9 .
I have two apps that require OS 9 to run and my old G3 laptop which I've been using just gave it up and is not worth the repair.
I've heard of people installing "Classic" on their OSX computers - and I even posted the question some time ago - but I didn't get any responses that I could understand.
I have my G4 Tiger discs - none of which appear to have Classic on them. I'm happy to do a complete reinstall if it will get me OS9 in addition to OSX, but again, nowhere do I find Classic on the discs. I do remember someone on my earlier post saying that some of the later discs no longer had the older OS on them.
I do have my old G3 OS9 discs - I don't suppose they are of any use are they?
How can I quickly add OS9 to my Powerbook G4, which is now running 10.4.10? Do I need to buy additional install software?

Lastly, my internal CD/DVD drive on my PowerBook G4 is shot and I'd like to avoid the cost of repairing it. Can a clean install be done with an external DVD drive, which I've been using for some time? Will my fried internal CD/DVD player prevent me from installing OS9?

I do have my old G3 OS9 discs - I don't suppose they are of any use are they?
See if your PBook can boot from it. If it can, then see if you have OS9 drivers installed on your HD, if not you need to erase it and choose the option to install OS9 drivers to get the OS9 install disk to work.
You just need to get a copy of OS9 on it to use classic, if you have an HD with OS9 installed, you can just copy the System & Applications folders over without the need for OS9 drivers on the HD you have Tiger on.
Do I need to buy additional install software?
Not unless we can't get OS9 copied over to it from an HD, then you'd need a copy of OS9 that will install from CD on your PBook.

I hate to tell you this, but I tried the "DURING, HANDLER; END_HANDLER" constructs, in several variations, taking the code from the examples, and the result is that the application crashes as soon as it hits the "DURING". :-(

i have been trying to download osx lion on my imac and its telling me 1 day and 19 hours it download for a while then it cuts off telling me that .the app cannot be downloaded .i have the latest snow leopard and i paid for osx lion....what am i doing wrong ?
Could be a variety of factors
1: You have a machine that doesn't qualify for 10.7, like a Intel Core Duo. (check the requirements for 10.7)
2: Your ISP connection isn't fast enough or reliable enough (you do know Lion reinstalls are also done via online?)
3: You have a bad connection or ISP data caps.
4: You have changed your DNS settings and the Akamai servers Apple uses is too far from your location, (switch your DNS settings back to your ISP's DNS settings)
5: You don't have enough free drive space or RAM to handle 10.7. (2GB-4GB RAM, x amount of drive space to download 10.7)
6: You have leechers on your Internet and they are affecting your bandwidth.
7: You may have something installed or some other issue causing the problems.
Bewarned that your older PPC based software WILL NO LONGER WORK if you install 10.7!!!
This includes older drivers for third party printers, scanners etc.

I am confused about something. How do I read a book on my MacBook Pro? I can't find the iBook app anywhere, which is what I use on my iPad. The book I want to read is in my iTunes but I can't click on it. Some of my iBooks show up in my iTunes but they are "grayed" out. The only books that respond in iTunes are audiobooks and that's not what I'm looking for. Is this a stupid question?
Nevermind - I answered my own question, which is I CAN"T READ ANY BOOKS I purchased in iBooks on my MacBook Pro. If I want to read on my mac I have to use Kindle or Nook. Which means any book I've already purchased through iBooks has to be read on my iPad. Kind of a drag because there are times when it's more convenient for me to read while I'm sitting with my Mac.

Ok, I have deleted EVERYTHING off my 16gb ipad. Photos, music, apps. All I have are the standard apps. It says I have used 11gb and only have 1.6 left. When I first bought it I had up to 4 movies and lots of apps, no problems. What's going on please!?

My kids now each have an itouch, should we all have different apple ids even if I am paying for all itunes and app store purchases? what about icloud? I would like to share itunes and app purchases, but not necessarily photos...help please!
The recommended solution for most families is to share the same Apple ID for iTunes and App Store purchases, so you can share your purchases, but us different IDs for iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud. With this arrangement, each person can automatically download purchases made on the shared ID (by turning this feature on in Settings>iTunes & App Stores), while keeping their FaceTime calls, text messages and iCloud data (including photo stream) separated. There is no requirement that the ID you use for purchasing be the same as the ID you use for these other services.

I plugged my iPod into the computer and it says that my iPod is synced with another iTunes library, but it's not. So all my music and apps are gone. What can I do to remind the computer its the right iTunes library and get all my stuff back?
Same as you would if you bought a pc; copy everything from your old computer to your new one. Then you can just sync everything from the new computer, as you did with the old one.

Hi, I am a new iMac user and I finally got my itunes to recognize my music to the iMac, but now it says my computer is not authorized?! When I ask at the App. store about this- they have nothing, but that is where the iMac sends me? So what did I miss?

How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

My instagram app icon on my iphone 4 is missing. When I go to the app store and try to reinstall it, it says open. When I search for it on my phone it can't find it? What should I do?
Make sure your phone is connected to the computer and iTunes is open
1. Visit Instagram.com from your computer web browser
2. Click "Download in the app store"
3. It will download and show up in your iTunes
4. Highlight and sync the app to your iPhone (note: it will not show up on your phone, even after it says syncing is complete).
5. In iTunes, select the Instagram icon and click "Remove" or "Uninstall"
6. Click Accept and Uninstall when it asks you to confirm as it will remove instagram and its data from your iPhone
7. Disconnect the phone from the computer
8. Manually reboot the phone after exiting all apps
9. Upon re-start, you will be able to access the app in the App Store, and install it -
Under Option Summary, the usage includes AUDIO, PHOTOS, APPS and OTHERS. What are the things included in OTHERS? It is using up my storage space. Can someone please help?
To add to Nick's comments, "Other" is typically approximately 1 gigabyte. Occasionally for some users, it gets much (many times) bigger because they have some corrupt files. If that's the case, it's best to restore the iPhone.
Plug the iPhone into (current) iTunes, let it sync, then choose "Restore" on the right. If restoring from the iPhone backup does not help, then restore (again) as new and then manaully sync the iPhone. -

Are you using ios? Is your app crashing or not installing an update?
There is an issue that the Revel version 2.3.2 on iOS does not seem to install. We are working with Apple to resolve it as quickly as possible. In tune show all summary activity during sync between nb and apple device. One of the summary is memory space status. Audio mayb3gb, photo 2gb, app with 3gb. What is other? Other consist of what type of file? It show quite substantial storage capacity?? Anyone can answer what is in other??
"Other" includes data such as contact information and photos assigned to contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cookies/history, notes created with the Notes application, SMS messages, email stored locally or cached, and 3rd party application data created and stored by the application.
If "other" is more than say .75GB at the most, you had a corrupt sync. Try syncing again and if the problem persists, the recognized fix for this is to restore your iPad. -

If you have failed to make sure that any apps purchased on the iphone were transferred to your computer before updating, then you will have to redownload.
Open itunes store, click Purchased, under Quick Links.
