OS X Snow Leopard server, proxy server stopped working.

Hi All,
I have OS X  Snow Leopard Server (10.6.8) configured as a forward proxy server.  It was working fine for a year until today.  I cannot access any external web sites and get the following error:
Service Unavailable!
The server is temporary unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems.  Please try again later.
If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
Error 503
www.apple.com
Sun Jul 27 22:53:18 2014
Apache/2.2.24 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.24 OpenSSL/0.9.8y
If I change the proxy configuration on the Mac client (MacBook Air) to access the Internet directly (bypass the proxy server) all websites work fine.  In the Server Admin, Web, logs I see the following errors:
Access /var/log/apache2/access_log.
"GET http://www.apple.com/startpage/HTTP/1.1" 503 1062
Error /var/log/apache2/error_log.
[error](60)Operation timed out: proxy:HTTP:attempt to connect to 2.16.236.183:80(*) failed.
I have tried the following but made no difference:
-Stop/Start the Web Server.
-Restarted the Server completely.
-Uninstalled/Reinstalled the Web Server (Off/On).
-Reconfigured the forward proxy settings.
-Empty the proxy cache folder.
-Checked the files exist under /etc/apache2 folder.
-Checked the files exist under /var/log/apache2 folder.
-Checked the the proxy_module and ssl_module are enabled.
Any ideas and how to troubleshoot this issue further is most appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I think I have fixed it.  I have reloaded/restarted the Cisco router/firewall back end and front end now proxy is working again.  Very odd since I use the same devices to connect directly to the Internet without the proxy server.  Oh well, it's working again so it's all good.

  • Managed sql server installer has stopped working sql 2008 r2

I tried to installed sql 2008 r2 on my windows 7 but unfortunately I got message "managed sql server installer has stopped working"
    1. I tried to program feature on and off feature
    2. I checked setup file is corrupted or not setup file is well in condition
    3. I turn on firewall too.
then again I tried to installed again same problem I faced.
please any different way to overcome from this problem!
    regard Bishnu Khaling!

    Hi Bishnu,
As Shanky’s post, you can post the SQL Server setup log files for analysis.
According to the error message, it is usually a problem with the installation of .NET Framework on the machine. However, from your description, you try to turn on the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 feature and still fail to install SQL Server 2008 R2.
Do you reboot your computer after enabling .NET Framework 3.5?
To further troubleshoot this issue, I recommend you perform the following steps.
    1. Run the below tool to verify the state of one or more versions of the .NET Framework on the computer .
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx
    2. If .Net Frameworks 3.5 cannot be verified in step1, please use the
.NET Framework Repair Tool to repair it.
    3. If there’s no problem with .Net Frameworks 3.5, and you also have .NET Framework 4.0 or 4.5 installed on the computer, please uninstall .NET Framework 4.0 or 4.5 completely. Then reinstall SQL Server and check if it is successful.
    4. In addition, please make sure that the Windows 7 system is not damaged.

I wanted to buy a Dragon ,Speech Recognition Programme for Mac but it says its for OS Lion, and I have OS Snow Leopard. Would it have worked on Snow Leopard?

The simplest method would be to ask them for their Snow Leopard version and say you can't upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8. I'm almost sure they will sell you a copy.
Generally if your machine can only upgrade to 10.7 Lion and not directly to 10.8 Mountain Lion, then it's best left on 10.6.8. in my opinion as your going to loose too much other software and slow down your machine in the process.
This rapid OS X upgrade cycle has caused plenty of problems for users and developers alike, so I suspect you will find a sympathizer with the developer.
In fact I'm not recommending Mac's to anyone anymore because Apple simply has lost touch with reality.

  • Unable to bind MacBook Pro (running 10.6 - Snow Leopard ) to Windows Server 2003 domain

Hi there, I've been working on this problem for a few hours now (and a few hours last Thursday) and don't feel I'm getting anywhere, so I'm reaching out for help....
My organisation has just purchased a new MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6) and as a Technical Support Engineer I have been asked to configure it for an end user.
I am currently trying to join it to our corporate domain, which is a Windows Server 2003 domain operating at the Windows Server 2003 Native domain functional level.
The MacBook is configured to use DHCP, and has been assigned valid IP address, DNS servers etc by the DHCP server. It can resolve all names on our network, including the names of our domain controllers. When I use nslookup to resolve the name of the domain "my_domain.local" it returns a list of DC's on the domain, which would indicate to me that name resolution is working perfectly. It is using our primary DNS server, 'Ponus' to resolve these names - Ponus is also the Domain Controller in this site.
To attempt to join the MacBook to the domain I have created a computer account for it on the domain, in the Computers container. I have gone into System/Library/Core Services and run the Directory Utility.
In the directory Utility I have ticked Active Directory and clicked on it to edit. The 'Forest' field is greyed out and set to 'Automatic', in the 'Domain' field I have entered my_domain.local, which is the FQDN of my domain. I click Bind and when prompted enter my Domain Admin username and password (in the 'Create Computer Account in:' field it displays correctly as CN=Computers,DC=my_domain,DC=local.)
When I click OK I get the message: Invalid domain. An invalid Domain and Forest combination was specified. You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain and forest (e.g., ads.company.com).
I have attempted writing the domain as my_domain.local, my_domain.local., MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL and MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL. but I get the same error each time. I have checked and rechecked DNS is resolving OK, and cannot see why it cannot find the Domain and Forest from the FQDN that I am entering. Even so I tried creating records in the hosts file on the MacBook to point to the main Domain Controller at this site (Ponus) but this didn't change anything.
I have seen a few people report the same issue online but the responses tend to fizzle out before anyone gets to the bottom of it. I have seen some indication that people with an understore (_) in their domain name, or with a .local domain name may experience issues with joining Mac hosts, however these details are very vague and if true there must be a workaround.
If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it, I'm running out of time to complete this work and have run out of things to try.
I have an inkling that this is due to the Mac for some reason not reading the SRV records for the DCs and LDAP in DNS, or to do with the Mac looking only at one SRV record (ie. there is one for a new DC that we haven't deployed yet), not being able to reach this and giving up, but I'm clutching at straws really with my limited knowledge of the Macs process for joining the domain.
    Many many thanks,

    Hi there,
A simple suggestion , please make sure both MacBook Pro clock and the server clock are the same meaning the hour/Min/ sec both should match. A least difference of 3 seconds is fine.
I had faced this problem in many place and only solution was to match the time and it will bind immediatly.

    Hi
It's easy enough to 'connect' any version of OS X Server to any other version of OS X Server. Use the Join button in the Users & Groups Preferences Pane. Alternatively use the Directory Utility itself.
You seem to be misunderstanding what an Open Directory Master and Replica are? They are not what I think you think they are. They are not a 'back-up' of each other if you're providing more than the shared Directory Service.
An OD Replica maintains a read-only copy of the LDAP Database (Usernames, Passwords and Policies etc) that's stored on the OD Master and nothing more. If the Master was to go offline for any reason the Replica can be quickly promoted to a Master Role and continue to provide information for the shared directory. This assumes it has easy and quick access to the Volume storing networked home folders? The LDAP Database in that case would then become writable. Later on and whenever you've fixed the problem with the old Master it can quickly be demoted and made a Replica of the now new Master.
Although this is for 10.6 Server (it is nevertheless still applicable) everything you need to know about Master and Replica relationships is here:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/OpenDirAdmin_v10.6.pdf
    Page 55 onwards.
    From Page 64:
"The Open Directory master and its replicas must use the same version of Mac OS X Server. . ."
If your OD Master is also providing Mail, Calendar and Contact Services then none of these will be replicated. You will have to maintain a backup of these databases yourself using whatever method you deem fit for your needs.
    HTH?

  • MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard and Exchange Server

My wife is considering a MacBook Pro for her business (we have one at home). At her work they have Exchange Server. With our home MacBook Pro I have been able to connect to her Exchange server through Entourage. (however I think her Exchange server is version 4 and not 7). Anyway, we are getting mail, contacts and her calendar through Exchange but we are not getting shared calendars and I don't know how to access her files on the Exchange server. I really want her to buy a MacBook but we need to make sure that shared calendars and file sharing works. Can someone inform me about this?
Her company is upgrading to Exchange server 7 in December and I know that Snow Leopard allows Exchange to work through Mail, Address Book and iCal. Again, I need to know if calendar sharing and file sharing can work. Thanks.

    Hello,

  • Snow Leopard's VNC server - does it work?

    Hi,
Question 1: Can you confirm if the VNC server in Snow Leopard works out of the box, once Screen Sharing and the VNC password are set up in Preferences? I am trying to connect from RealVNC from Windows XP.
Question 2: Does anyone have any idea how to reliably get an L2TP VPN working from Snow Leopard over a 3G connection? If I can get a working answer to Q2, then I don't care about Q1.
    The Back-Story...
I am trying to get access to my iMac desktop through a VPN running over 3G. I would rather use dial-up because it is easier and quicker (in that by the time I get this mess running I could have finished my life's work and retired) but something inside keeps saying that it should all Just Work.
For those who are amused by the misfortune of others, the VPN connects from my Snow Leopard laptop, but it will not pass traffic. No pings, no nothing. I tried to add a route sending all 192.168 traffic down the hose, but my reward was the grey curtain of death and an OS X reboot.
Anyway, I have given up on the whole 3G thing from Snow Leopard - it is so unpredictable that it gets embarrassing when other (Windows) people are looking on.
However, my macbook has a copy of Windows XP running in Fusion. It makes me feel queasy to even think this, but I get nostalgic for the networking in windows - it was a pain at the time, but now it looks positively shiny.)
I get it to take over the 3G usb thingo, and it creates a VPN first time, and I can access the web server on the iMac through it. I could probably even get it to share files if I spent half a day on it (Oh, right... I forgot - It Just Works... barely.) However, what I need to be able to do is see the iMac screen from the laptop. If the **** routing would work, I could use Apple's Screen Sharing, but it doesn't so I have to use VNC from the Windows VM.
Now I am trying to get VNC to connect from Windows to the iMac. This Just Works too... I have downloaded the latest version of realVNC (the free version) and installed it into Windows on the laptop. I have activated Screen Sharing in Preferences on the iMac, and set a VNC password.
When I try to connect using RealVNC, I enter the host name, I get another window asking for the password, then when I hit Enter, I get a bright flash of dark as VNC seems to open a screen window then ka-foopa - it is gone. In Task Manager, the client has disappeared.
I have seen a lot of messages doing a lot of discussion about this, and it does not look good. If I wanted to muck about with stuff just for the fun of it, I could have saved a lot of dough and switched to Linux.
It is nearly 2011, and this stuff should all be working by now - VPN and VNC have been around for a decade and it still needs witchcraft to get it to work. Why is that?

Mr Hoffman, you are right about the kernel fault it gives me the willies.
    _Client software and the dongle_
The dongle is a Sierra Wireless USB 308 branded as Bigpond Elite 21 (because I am an elite kinda guy) and it has been working well under many circumstances for some time. There is a connection app that is part of the OS X support kit for the USB 308 device.
For the VPN, I am using OS X's network prefs. The dong turns up in NetPrefs' connection list as USB 308. To make the connection, I start the connection app and it dials and logs into the network.
Also, I can use it to successfully connect to other VPNs, just not this one so it mostly works.
I have called the carrier's support desk and they don't provide free support for network apps. However, they do have a paid support product (Telstra Plus) which charges $59 if they solve your problem. I called them and they were very sympathetic until they heard "Mac" but bravely soldiered on until they completely lost interest when I mentioned "VPN".
    _Active Connections_
According to Network Prefs, the only active connection is the USB 308, and the IP address it is assigned is 124.183.blah. The DNS server addresses automatically set by the connection are 61.something. There is no indication of a 192.168.1 network other than at the target.
Output from netstat -rn on the client machine indicates that the only active networks are en2 (the USB 308) and lo0. There are no 192.168 routes listed in the routing table.
    L2TP
We know the L2TP is working (and that the carrier network supports it) because the windows VM on the MacBook can successfully connect using the identical hardware. The only differences are the client software for the USB 308 and the OS.
    PPTP
We don't use PPTP because (a) Microsoft cooked it up, and (b) L2TP over IPSEC is said to be solidly secure. However I have just taken it for a spin and it is working. So it is a fallback. It can be argued that PPTP must be OK because so many people use it, but you can say that about Windows too, and I won't believe you.
I have installed IPsecuritas (which I like a lot), I have carefully matched the settings in the router with the settings with IPSecuritas, and it still doesn't work. I suspect that IPSec/L2TP is not meant to be used, but rather just created to be admired from a distance.
Of course it could be the router. Any company that calls itself Billion is suspect from the the outset, no?
I will shake their tree and see if they will confess to anything.
    Russ.

  • Connect snow leopard to windows server

I try to connect my Mac with Snow Leopard to my work's Windows 2010 server. SMB is activated, no connection possible. Any suggestions?

Most Applications intended to run in that fashion would provide a Mac client, a Windows client and a Server component, designed to interact and keep a Master database on the Server up-to-date. Custom database software could also be written for that environment. Perehaps there are options for your package to be used in that fashion, but it would have to be designed-in from the beginning.
A web Application could also run in that fashion, with only a Web Browser on each computer interfacing to the Server software, which would keep the Master database and allow multiple access over your local Network.

  • 10.6 Snow Leopard,  Address Book Server, 10.5 Clients needing access

    Hi,
Setup Snow Leopard Server for a local not for profit that I donate some time to. All works great for their 10.6 Clients but (despite a fair bit of research) I cant find a way to get CARDDAV access to 10.5 PPC macs.
Is there a way or app that will let this happen. ie OS X 10.5.8 PPC Client (all patched up) needing to see a shared address book on the server. It can even be read only...
Been trolling through the options but it doesnt look promising... Hoping there is a real answer out there somewhere.

Hi, thanks for the reference.. Had been there without much success.
I am going to investigate a roundabout method... Using a shared address book read/write for the 10.6 clients and then syncing that with google. It would appear that 10.5 can sync via google.
Kind of a strange way to go but its the only thing I can think of at present. A carddav client for 10.5 would be sweet...

  • Problem connecting iChat client 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to iChat server (Lion)

    Hi guys,
I'm fairly new to the Lion server, but it's all working fine with my Lion client(s) so far
However, my wife's best friend's MacBook is still running Snow Leopard ( and she is not willing to upgrade her MacBook as of now due to severak reasons) and I'm trying to connect her iChat client from Snow Leopard to the iChat server running on my Lion server.
If I try to set up the account manually in the iChat client, I can't find an option for Mac OS X Lion server and trying a work around with the Jabber account settings didn't work either (on the server's log: credentials failed). Then, I tried to create a profile on the server and downloaded it to the Snow Leopard system, but it wasn't recognised (in System Settings, there is no Profile option ).
So, can someone please, please, please give me any idea about it or is it simply not possible to connect a an older iChat client (5.0.3, Snow Leopard) to the latest version of the iChat server (Lion) ??
Again, any idea is very appreciated!
    Many tx in advance.
    Cheers
    Kai

  • Ical server/client suddenly stopped working together

    Hi
I have 10.6.1 server with a group calendar served on a wiki. There are multiple users using 10.6.1 macbook, using ical to display/edit the group calendar. Server has a correctly configured FQDN. Apart from some niggles (will come to later), all has been fine for the last 2 weeks - all 10.6 clients have been able to connect without problems (to FQDN:8008/principals/wikis/groupadministration ). I do not have SSL. Today, one of the clients could no longer update the group calendar or refresh it (for changes from other people).
The following is in the client system log:
iCal[278] Exception in -[CalDAVAccountRefreshQueueableOperation refreshWithExceptionHandling] :: * -[NSCFString rawInterval]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x165437f0
In the server caldavd error log:
    [caldav-8009] [-] [twistedcaldav.method.propfind#error] Error reading property ('DAV:', 'current-user-privilege-set') for resource /calendars/_uids_/wiki-groupadministration/inbox/: <StatusResponse 401 Access denied while reading property {DAV:}current-user-privilege-set.>
Web access still works for this user.
There have been no changes to any set up and the user in question had no problems in the last 2 weeks, until today. I understand it just "stopped working" this morning - user can offer no further help.
In other niggles (possibly unrelated but if anyone can help):
    * I have an older client, running 10.5.8 with no wish to upgrade to 10.6, as there are some software compatibility issues (Adobe CS2, Parallels 3) and no budge to update software. ical has never been able to connect to the ical server reliably - after the first update/sync, no further updates are possible.
    * It is not possible to disable alarms to the group calendar in ical. Option-i, uncheck the box, and 30 seconds later the box is checked again. Each user has their own "personal" calendar in the group calendar, and some users like to have alarms. It is not possible to disable those alarms for other users.
Hope someone can help. All in all, I am not particularly impressed with SL server.

    Hello all,
since yesterday I'm having the same problem. the server was even not touched the last days.
    Thank you

  • Mail server has just stopped working. No errors in any log. Help!

I am running OS X Server 3.0.2 on Mavericks 10.9.1. Today at around 14:30 my Mail server, which has been working fine for over a year and for nearly a month under Server 3.0.2 just stopped working! I have tried stopping and starting Mail in Server.app and via ServerAdmin but the servcies will not start... serveradmin claims that IMAP is running but that SMTP/SMTPD/Virus Scanner/SPAM filtering/Virus updating are not. I tried disabling the all the filtering services but to no avail. Even though it claims IMAP is running I cannot connect from any client...
I have rebooted the machine but this did not help. I have looked at all the logs (system, mail, dovecot, postfix, amavis) and theer are no suspicious messages in any of them!
I am out of ideas and my mail server is down which is very serious so if anyone has any ideas please pitch in.
    Thanks.

    My problems were:
    1.    Server.app shows the Mail service stuck in 'starting' status
    2.    serveradmin shows that IMAP is running but SMTPD, Spam filtering, Virus filtering and Virus updating were STOPPED.
    3.    No clients could connect to either IMAPS or SMTP.
    Diagnostics performed:
All the various messafge logs (system.log, Mail.log, mail-info.log mail-err.log, amavis.log) show no abnormal messages.
    DNS is working just fine.
In the end I did the following:
    1.    Stop all mail related services.
    2.    Make a safe copy of /Library/Server/Mail/Config
    3.    Restore the previous days version of /Library/Server/Mail/Config from backup.
    4.    Start the Mail service
And all was working again just fine.
I then did a file by file compare of all the configuration files between the workign and not working configurations and I found just the following two differences in postfix/main.cf:
    Not working:
    inet_interfaces = loopback-only
    smtpd_helo_required = no
    Working:
    inet_interfaces = all
    smtpd_helo_required = yes
I don't think the second difference is so critical but the first seems to break everything (not too surprising I guess). All the other files were identical.
So, the good news is that all is working again but the huge concern is why this change happenned, seemingly at random. My strong suspicion is that Server.app, at some point when I exited it havign made some minor change unrelated to mail decided to apply these incorrect changes to the Mail configuration. Why it would do this is beyond me. I think there are some subtle bugs in Server 3.0 (and maybe Server 2.2 as well)...
