Overloading TreeMap Comparator

I am trying to have a common comparator. Inside the comparator, I am overloading the comparing function. It works fine, but gives a typesafe warning. Is there anyway to overcome it?
public class KeyComparator implements Comparator
     private int keyType;
     public KeyComparator(int keyType)
          this.keyType = keyType;
     public int compare(Object o1, Object o2)
          int rtnCompare = -999;
          if (this.keyType == 1)
               {rtnCompare = check(((KeyRecord)o1).getC(), ((KeyRecord)o2).getC());}
          else if (this.keyType == 2)
               {rtnCompare = check (((KeyRecord2)o1).getE(), ((KeyRecord2)o2).getE(), ((KeyRecord2)o1).getS(), ((KeyRecord2)o2).getS());}
          else if (this.keyType == 3)
               {rtnCompare = check (((KeyRecord3)o1).getsC(), ((KeyRecord3)o2).getsC());}
          return rtnCompare;
     //Overload
     //For KeyType = 1
     private int check(String a, String b)
          int rtn = a.compareTo(b);
          return rtn;
     //For KeyType = 2
     private int check(short a1, short a2, short b1, short b2)
          int rtn = -999;
          if (a1 < a2) {rtn = -1;}
          else if (a1 > a2){rtn =  1;}
          else if ((a1 == a2)&& (b1 < b2)) {rtn =  -1;}
          else if ((a1 == a2)&& (b1 > b2)) {rtn =  1;}
          else if ((a1 == a2)&& (b1 == b2)) {rtn =  0;}
          return rtn;
     //For KeyType = 3
     private int check(int a, int b)
          int rtn = -999;
          if (a < b) {rtn = -1;}
          else if (a > b){rtn =  1;}
          else {rtn =  0;}
          return rtn;
}Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response.
I had tried like you pointed out as below:
public class KeyComparator implements Comparator<KeyRecord>
     private int keyType;
     public KeyComparator(int keyType)
          this.keyType = keyType;
     public int compare(<KeyRecord> o1, <KeyRecord> o2)
     {//codeKeyRecord, KeyRecord2, KeyRecord3 are all separate types. Hence it gives
error "Cannot cast to KeyRecord" for KeyRecord2 & KeyRecord3
fields. This is the problem I am having. Please advise.

    Maestro, you may want to change you the put method in the Klanten class to public void put(String key, value)
        klantentabel.put(key, value);
    }and then replace any occurances of
    klant.put(p, p.getNaam());with
    klant.put(p.getNaam(), p);Why?
    Quote from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/util/TreeMap.html
    "This class guarantees that the map will be in ascending key order, ..."
    So, if use Strings as keys, you don't need to write your own comparator, since Strings are already comparable.
    You did use your Abonne object as key and its name as value when putting data into the map, but on retrieval and deletion you did use Abonne's name as key => obviously can't work (i.e. no matching entry will ever be found).
    If you do not understand the concepts of Maps, refer to
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/util/Map.html

  • Ordering certain keys in TreeMap / comparator question

    I have a TreeMap of currencies. Keys are ("USD", "EUR"...) and each value holds some collection.
    I want to sort the TreeMap so that "GBP", "USD", "CAD" and "EUR" are the first 4 keys in the map and other currencies are in their natural order following these 4 keys. I don't know which currency I'll be getting from a certain operation so it could be that "USD" is encountered last which means it will be the last key in my TreeMap.
    How would I do this using the Comparator and compareTo method?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Norm.

    Your Comparator's compare() method could have to have a lot of hard-coding in it. Like this:public int compare(Object a, Object b) {
      Thing at = (Thing) a;
      Thing bt = (Thing) b;
      String acurr = a.getCurrency();
      String bcurr = b.getCurrency();
      if (acurr.equals(bcurr)) return 0; // return 0 for equals
      if (acurr.equals("GBP")) return -1; // GBP before everything
      if (bcurr.equals("GBP")) return 1; // GBP before everything
      if (acurr.equals("USD")) return -1; // USD before the rest
      if (bcurr.equals("USD")) return 1; // USD before the rest
      // and so on
    }

    what you need is like this:
    tree.put(date.getTime(),"xxx");Yes to be able to use a TreeMap the key must be a class which implements the Comparable interface and Date is such a class. Luckily it's possible to convert between Calendar and Date objects using the getTime/setTime pair of methods. So you can store Date objects in the TreeMap but work with Calendar objects outside.
    On the other hand if you don't need the ordering on key provided by a TreeMap you can as well store Calendar objects directly in a HashMap because accesses are faster.

  • UID key in TreeMap causing ClassCastException

    Hello all,
    I'm trying to use the UID class as a key in a TreeMap, but I'm running into a ClassCastException when I try to lookup using a UID as a key. From the docs, I see that a ClassCastException is thrown when the "key cannot be compared with the keys currently in the map." My guess is that the key needs to implement the comparable interface but I can't find mention of it anywhere in the docs. (other than the 'compared with keys' statement) ... So, two questions:
    1) Can someone verify my suspicions about comparable interface?
    2) Is there a better solution that implementing my own 'comparable subclass of UID? (I don't mind subclassing, but I'm loath to write/maintain/test/document a custom solution if I can use a built in class)
         protected void testTreemapUID() {
              TreeMap tree = new TreeMap();
              Double testDouble = new Double(23);
              tree.put( testDouble, new String("frank"));

    Because you are using a TreeMap, which is a sorted map, the keys must be mutually comparable.
    java.rmi.server.UID doesn't implement Comparable. That's why the ClassCastException is thrown.
    If you need a sorted map, then you will have to provide a Comparator*.
    If you don't care about sorting, you could use a HashMap instead.

  • Sort a treemap/hashmap by values

    I'm writing a really simple program that creates a treemap and writes it line by line to a text file. I want it to be ordered by the values asociated with the keys, not by the keys themselves.
    The map simply has strings for keys, the value with each one is the number of times that string appears in the input text file.
    I've looked at the constructor treemap(Comparator c), but didn't really see how I could use it. Is there a simple way to get the text file sorted by values, not the keys?
    Thanks!

    Do you really need a SortedMap to do this? Is there any point when you really need the data sorted by the String keys?
    Probably easier, once you have the collection of String/frequency pairs, just to dump that into a List and sort the List using a comparator that looks at the frequency primarily.

  • ArrayComparator For TreeMap Java 1.5

    Hi, I have a class like:
    public class TreeIndex extends TreeMap<Object[], HashSet<IRecord>>
    As you can see the Index uses an array of objects as the key, so I need to have a compare method looks like:
    public Comparator<Object[]> comparator()
    return
    new Comparator<Object[]>()
    public int compare(Object[] as, Object[] bs)
    System.out.println("compare two keys!");
    int length = Math.min(as.length, bs.length);
    int result = 0;
    for (int j =0; result==0 && j<length; j++)
    result = comp.get(j).compare(as[j], bs[j]);
    return result!=0 ? result : (as.length - bs.length);
    /* even these lines below wont work
    return
    new Comparator<Object[]>()
    public int compare(Object[]as, Object[]bs)
    {return 1;};
    The comp is a field that finds the appropriate Comparator for diffferent object.
    The program compiles but throws a ClassCastException saying that key cannot be compared with the keys currently in the map. I believe there is something wrong in the compare() after a thoughtful debugging but I cannot see anything wrong with it, could anyone give me soem suggestions please?

  • Use of generics in the Map interface

    After using Java 1.5 for a while, I've gotten pretty comfortable using generics and the collections framework. Very often, I depend on the new generics-related compiler warnings to guide me when I've made changes to my code. Recently, I missed a fairly subtle bug because of the following issue. Why isn't the get() method in the java.util.Map interface declared as:
    V get(K key);Is there some subtle reason why this method isn't declared to enforce the generic type K for the key value? Likewise for containsKey() and remove() as well.
    Thanks!

    So where is the problem to use K in the first
    place??The cast to K is removed during complilation. It's
    not going to do anything at runtime.
    Just because a reference is of type Object doesn't
    mean it's not a K.
    If I get an Object of unknown type, why should I have
    to down-cast it just so that I can check to see
    whether it is in the Map?
    To state the point I wrote this simple code:
            Map<String,Integer> testMap = new TreeMap<String,Integer>();
            testMap.put("test", Integer.valueOf(100));
            // test the get method
            Integer value = testMap.get("test");
            System.out.println("First value: " + value);
            // test the method with differing parameter
            value = testMap.get(Float.valueOf(2));
            System.out.println("Second value: " + value);The code compiles without any error (so far so good) but the execution of this code results in Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.String
         at java.lang.Float.compareTo(Unknown Source)
         at java.util.TreeMap.compare(Unknown Source)
         at java.util.TreeMap.getEntry(Unknown Source)
         at java.util.TreeMap.get(Unknown Source)
         at MapTest.main(MapTest.java:27)So when the Object parameter is allowed (I'm okay with that) why the ClassCastException. A similar approach to the implementations of Lists would be necessary. The current implementation is not satisfactory.

  • Which listener should be used for JTextArea

    Hi,
    I need to add a listener for JTextArea particualy when
    the text in the jtextarea is changed. I don't think
    mouse listener is enough, since the user can use tab to
    get to the jtextarea and edit the text. In this case,
    which listener should I use. Sample code would be
    helpful.
    In addition, I have a problem with the jtextarea that
    when user uses tab to go to different gui components,
    such as jtextfield, jcombobox, jtextarea, jlist, etc, the
    tab stays in the jtextarea and keeps appending to it. It does
    not go to next component, such as jlist. How can I make it
    work?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pin

    It doesn't work. Are you using 1.4 or 1.3? I am using
    1.4.
    In the 1.4 API, it says that isManagingFocus is
    "Deprecated".
    Here is what I have:
    JTextArea descrptArea = new JTextArea() {
    public boolean isManagingFocus() {
    return false;
    descrptArea.setRows(3);
    descrptArea.setLineWrap(true);
    descrptArea.addKeyListener(new KeyAdapter() {
    public void keyTyped(KeyEvent e) {
    // DO SOMETHING
    I found the following code which says it will do it.
    However, I got the exeception:
    java.lang.ClassCastException:
    n: javax.swing.KeyStroke
    at java.util.TreeMap.compare(TreeMap.java:1081)
    at java.util.TreeMap.put(TreeMap.java:459)
    at java.util.TreeSet.add(TreeSet.java:205)
    Set forwardTraversalKeys = new TreeSet();
    forwardTraversalKeys.add(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke('\t'));
    forwardTraversalKeys.add(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEven
    .VK_TAB,
    InputEvent.CTRL_MASK));
    textArea.setFocusTraversalKeys
    (KeyboardFocusManager.FORWARD_TRAVERSAL_KEYS,
    forwardTraversalKeys);
    Set backwardTraversalKeys = new TreeSet();
    backwardTraversalKeys.add(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEve
    t.VK_TAB,
    InputEvent.SHIFT_MASK));
    backwardTraversalKeys.add(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEve
    t.VK_TAB,
    InputEvent.SHIFT_MASK |InputEvent.CTRL_MASK));
    textArea.setFocusTraversalKeys(
    KeyboardFocusManager.BACKWARD_TRAVERSAL_KEYS,
    backwardTraversalKeys);
    Any idea???
    PinI'm not using 1.4 but the class cast exceptions look like they come from : Set forwardTraversalKeys=new TreeSet() etc
    try : TreeSet forwardTraversalKeys=new TreeSet()
    you cant cast from a Set to a TreeSet because a TreeSet is a Set but a Set is NOT a TreeSet.
    hope this helps.

  • To make TAB out of JTextArea

    Hi,
    I found someone post the following code inthe forum. It supposes
    to trap the tab key and move the focus to the next component, instead
    of having the tab in the JTextArea. I got it complied okay, but I
    received exception when executing:
    java.lang.ClassCastException: javax.swing.KeyStroke
    at java.util.TreeMap.compare(TreeMap.java:1081)
    at java.util.TreeMap.put(TreeMap.java:459)
    at java.util.TreeSet.add(TreeSet.java:205)
    The exeception is from the 3rd line of the codes.
    Please help!!!

    Codes...
    Set forwardTraversalKeys = new TreeSet();
    forwardTraversalKeys.add(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke('\t'));
    forwardTraversalKeys.add(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_TAB,
    InputEvent.CTRL_MASK));
    textArea.setFocusTraversalKeys
    (KeyboardFocusManager.FORWARD_TRAVERSAL_KEYS,
    forwardTraversalKeys);
    Set backwardTraversalKeys = new TreeSet();

    Sorry about my last post. I just cut and pasted some code from an example that uses a background image in the text area and should have deleted the paintComponent() method. Here is the complete code in case you want to try again. This works in JDK1.3. I know focus management has changed in JDK1.4, but you don't mention which version you are using.

  • TreeSet with Objects

    Hello,
    I am doing something silly, and I can't figure it out.
    I want to use TreeSet with Objects, not strings, the code below throws a class cast exception:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: com.generatescape.newtreemodel.CanalNode
         at java.util.TreeMap.compare(Unknown Source)
         at java.util.TreeMap.put(Unknown Source)

         at com.generatescape.testscape.JustMain.main(JustMain.java:35)
        TreeSet ts = new TreeSet();
        CanalNode cn1 = new CanalNode("X",0);
        CanalNode cn2 = new CanalNode("a",0);
        ts.add(cn1);
        ts.add(cn2);The equals method of canalnode is defined. Do I need to define another method, for example compare?
    thanx
    susie

    thanksyou're welcome - though part of that might need some clarification - I meant that if you don't supply a comparator of your own in the constructor of your TreeSet then you need to make sure that everything you put in there implements the Comparable interface (if you do supply your own Comparator then you'll know what it requires).
    Hope that helped (and didn't just muddy the waters more)

    hi ChuckBing,
    Thank you very much, your suggestion helps me a lot...
    I change the WeatherReport Class as follows and its working now...
    public class WeatherReport implements Serializable,Comparable {
        private String location;
        private String temp;
        private String desc;
        public int compareTo(Object o) {
            if(o instanceof WeatherReport)
                WeatherReport wp=(WeatherReport)o;
                String l1=wp.getLocation();
                String l2=this.getLocation();
                return l2.compareTo(l1);
            return -1;
    }Once Again Thanks a lot ...

  • Map.get(Object o) vs Map.get(K k) ?

    Hi All,
    I hace a question about Map (or may be TreeMap as it comes into my notice whle using TreeMap). I posted it on Collections related forum and got referred here
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=684755
    I was wondering why some methods of Map<k,V> specify Object as type for keys used and not the given type K. problem is that following code will throw a ClassCastException
    String key="146564";
    TreeMap<String, String> map = new TreeMap<String, String>();
    map.put(key,key); /*If you uncomment this line you will get Exception*/
    map.containsValue(new Long(key)); /*can compile */
    map.containsKey(new Long(146564)); /*can compile */
    String v = map.get("1");
    //map.put(new Long(1), "");/*Can't compile*/
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.String
    at java.lang.Long.compareTo(Long.java:34)
    at java.util.TreeMap.compare(TreeMap.java:1093)
    at java.util.TreeMap.getEntry(TreeMap.java:347)
    at java.util.TreeMap.containsKey(TreeMap.java:204)
    atTestClass.main(TestClass.java:27)It is suggested that since I am passing a Long to map.containsKey(), where as Map was declared as Map<String,String> I should expect to get such nasty runtime exceptions. My thinking is 'generics' are specifically designed to avoid such situations.
    Can any one let me know why 'generics' are implemented such a way that is not orthognal accross various interfaces? i.e. why is it that I need to remember what instance of a Map was created with key/value pairs of Type A/B and which one with C/D, however if I am using Collection, it will be type checked at comple time? I would either expect to remember it always or to expet it to get type checked at compile time always.

    This was heavily debated during the evaluation phase. The reason that get(Object) was favoured is basically backwards compatibility: the contract of Map talks only in terms of the equals(Object) method, and for many key types K there can be objects which are not of type K but are equal to a key of type K.
    My personal view is that if get(K) introduces problems then you've used the wrong type for K, and your entire design is probably shoddy if there isn't a suitable interface type to use. Moreover, having get(K) would save me probably 5+ hours per year chasing bugs due to calling get (or Collection.contains, which is really the same issue) with the wrong object.
    If you really want to compile against get(K), it's fairly straightforward to make a jar with a "fixed" java.util package and use this with javac -bootclasspath. I believe that as long as you don't distribute said jar (and you only need it for compilation, so that's fine) the licence permits this, but IANAL and this is not legal advice.

  • OER Report error..

    Hi,
    I am using OER 10.3 and have set up projects and assets as per documentation. When i tried to generated the standard reports like Asset Use, Asset Status etc, i am always getting *null in the report pop-up. When i see the tomcat log, it gives a null pointer exception as below. Is there any other settings need to be done?

    Kuppusamy.V.,

    Hi,
    I managed to resolve the issue after some research. The OER was using JTDS driver to connect to MSSQL Server and when i replace it with MSSQLDriver, it could fetch the report out. Hope this helps for someone in future.
    Cheers,
    Kuppusamy.V.,
