OWA_UTIL and HTP across database link

Has anyone figured out how to use the features of OWA_UTIL, such as listprint, across a database link? I can create a drop list on data that is in the portal instance. But if I try to create a list based on a table in a back-end database through a database link, it generates errors.
Also, I create a procedure to generate a dynamic page portlet using htp calls and it works fine if the procedure is located in the portal instance. But move the code to the back-end database and access via a synonym and database link and it generates errors out of the owa_util package.

Create a view on your local db using tables over the db link and base your list on that view.

I have created a database link named in my application
dblink_3
I have a form and report in my application. On the from I have an item called P6_USER_ for which I would like to access a table (trk_user) through the database link I created so that I can fill in the text field or select list with a user from the table.
can I browse by a select list somehow? or do I need to create a button that takes me to a report with a list of the data in the table and select that way.
Please steer me in the right direction,

Hi Kirk,
The fact that the data is on an external table shouldn't make any difference. You can do:
SELECT field1 d, field2 r FROM trk_user@dblink_3 ORDER BY 1
and that will give you your select list

Oracle and SQL Server Database Link errors

I am having following error messages while setting up the ODBC connection. I want to access SQL Server tables from within Oracle8i. I have followed all the instruction of Oracle Generic Connectity document and have tested ODBC connection with ODBCPING as well as with TNSPING. Have created Database Link also within Oracle for SQL Server. But when I access the SQL Server table from within Oracle I get the following error messages.
ORA-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process
Could any body suggestion the solution please.

Difference between create database link and create shared Database link

Hi Guys,
can any one suggest me where to use "create database link" statement and where to use "Create shared database link". I have only idea that using shared database link the process can reuse connections already established to the remote server.
In my envrionment I am used to connect with db link but sometimes its not working so try with shared link and its working fine. In local as well as remote database we are using DEDICATED only not the shared server.
so, what the cause behind this?
Any suggestion?

Database links between Oracle 10G and 7.1/7.3 & 8.0 databases

Hi All..
Unfortunately one of our customers is still using very very old unsupported versions of the database - 7.1 and 7.3 and 8.0. They wish to start an upgrade process - moving up to 10G (via staged upgrades) but wish to know whether they can still access information from old databases via database links.
I know that the Oracle 10G client cannot connect to database versions this old, and I am presuming that the database itself cannot via DB links but I thought it wise to check.
Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Oracle 10.1 is certified to connect to 8.1.7 and later. Database links to earlier versions are not certified and generally do not work.
The general solution to this sort of thing tends to be putting an older version of the database (8.1.7 or 9.0.1, usually) between the ancient databases and the new database. 10.1 can create a database link to 9.0.1. 9.0.1 can create a database link to 7.3.4 and create views that reference remote 7.3.4 objects that the 10.1 system can query. Of course, you're taking data over the network twice, so performance isn't ideal, but it can work in a pinch.

Symptoms
Describe on a Synonym which is based on a database link may issue error:
ORA-2019 connection description for remote database not found
Select from the synonym works successfully.
Cause
Based on the Bug 3071468 this issue happens when the local
and the remote database have different domain name in the GLOBAL_NAME.
For example if:
select * from global_name;
gives from local database:
PROD.UK.ORACLE.COM
and the remote database has:
TEST.US.ORACLE.COM
then we have different domains for the global_name.
This does not reproduce when the domain is the same for both global_names.
Fix
This issue is fixed in 10.1.0.2.
For previous versions we have the following 2 workarounds:
1. Use View in the place of the synonym. This works.
2. Alter one of the databases global_name , so that the 2 global_names to have the same domain.
For example in the above example chenge the TEST database as:
sql> alter database rename global_name to test.uk.oracle.com;
Then you would have to drop and recreate the database link.

How to create a database link between an 8i (apps) database and APEX

Want to link my Oracle APPS databse on 8i with Oracle XE and APEX. Any idea how to achieve this ?

I don't know what Apex is!!! But try to follow these instructions.
It works for Oracle 9i.
As far as I know, you are supposed to have installed other than ORACLE Client to complete these instructions.
1. Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Data Sources (ODBC)
Folder: System DSN /
click add
Choose : Microsoft Access Driver
Data Source Name : my_test
Description : any_description_you_want
click Database/Select... : full pathname for <your_file.mdb>
click OK
Click OK
2. Goto OH\hs\admin:
2.1) Create a copy of "inithsodbc.ora" file giving it this name:
initmy_test.ora
2.2) Edit "initmy_test.ora" and change as below.
# HS init parameters
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = my_test
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = OFF
3. Add this entry to listener ( Don't forget to stop/start the listener )

BLOBs and Database Links

Do Blobs work through Database Links? I have images in one database that I would like to render in a portal attached to another.

Hi I tried the following in sqlplus:
1)create a table(ATAB_CLOB) in a remote database(DB2) with a clob column
2)connect to the database(DB1) and create a database link (ADBLINK1) for the
remote database(DB2) .
3) create a synonym (ASYN_TAB) based on the remote table (ATAB_CLOB) using the
database link ADBLINK.
4) Now try to create a view based on this synonym,I see the same error:
SQL> create or replace view aview2 as select * from asyn_Tab;
create or replace view aview2 as select * from asyn_Tab
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-22992: cannot use LOB locators selected from remote tables
The message says it all.
This is a database limitation.

Database Links Help

I want to create a dynamic PL/SQL Portlet which displays an image based on a value in a remote database.
Can someone explain how to use Database Links in Oracle Portal and then how to create the public synonym so it can be accessed in the SQL?
I've tried to do it but am unsure which schema to create a DB Link To - Is it the Portal Schema?

In the Portal Navigator click on the Database tab.
Create a new schema e.g. BRAND. If you give it a password you can log in directly to that schema using SQLDeveloper, which can be hugely helpful for debugging and testing.
Click on the schema in the list to open it up. Create a new database link. You will need to know a named user and password on the remote database, as well as the SID. The SID must match an entry on the TNSNAMES.ORA file on the application server, which is not necessarily the same as your local PC (this has caught me out far too often...).
Create a synonym for the table SYSTEM_PARAMETERS in your new schema. On the second page you will have to type in the source table name (the pop-up search doesn't work across database links) and also select the database link (it's best to use the popup search for this).
If you use SQLDeveloper to log into your new schema then you should be able to check everything is well by running your select stagement:
select parameter_value
from system_parameters
where parameter = 'BRAND';

Database link failure.

Using the grouper account, I have a database link defined as follows:
CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK parent_link
CONNECT TO parent IDENTIFIED BY "password"
USING 'rem1';
... and several synonyms, one of which is defined as follows:
CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM valid_fishery FOR parent.valid_fishery@parent_link;
I am able to log in as parent in SQL Plus and Select from valid_fishery.
But when logged in as grouper, I could not Select from valid_fishery, using either method of access:
Referenceing the table name: Select * from parent.valid_fishery@parent_link;
Referenceing the synonym: Select * from valid_fishery;
I get the message:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied.
ORA-02063: preceding line from PARENT_LINK
This message is obviously wrong because I logged in through SQL Plus with the exact same username/password.
Clearly, something is wrong with the link, but what could it be?

Proham,
I have seen various issues when going downward across database links (from a higher version of database, to a lower version of database). This has been probablematic over the years in various versions and with different commands that are typically fixed.
Sometimes, in the past, I have seen incorrect errors raised over db_link issues. I believe I even recall selecting from 'dual' returned an error, or when running certain commands using a procedure or package on the remote database.
First thing I'd ask to check (even though it does not seem related), is to ensure either grouper, (or public) have select access to 'parent's' tables.
Does grouper have an account in the remote database? This shouldn't matter actually since you created the link to connect to through parent.

Not able to create a database link using the database gateway of oracle 11g

While trying to create a database link to SQL server from Oracle ,using the database gateway provided with 11g, i am getting the following error while making use of it in selecting columns from tables :

What is the version of the Oracle database in which you have specified/and use the database link?
If it is for example 10.2.0.3.0 you need to apply the mandatory patch for RDBMS bug 5965763 first before being able to use an 11g gateway. Have a look at MetaLink note 457808.1 for details about this patch.

Creating a Database link for a user

Hello All,
I am trying to create a database link for one of my users.
When I create it as sysdba the link gets created in the SYS schema which tells me that my syntax is working/fine.
But when I ALTER my SESSION and set my CURRENT_SCHEMA = <USER_NAME> I get ORA-00990: missing or invalid privilege
So I tried granting the user CREATE DATABASE LINK, CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK, and DROP PUBLIC DATABASE LINK.
Same error.
Any ideas what I am missing?

Database link with current_user

I'm logged on database EMSDB.D710.DE and created a database link to EMSDB.D999.DE with current_user(...same user, same credentials I'm logged in). When I tried to use that created link I get the errorcode:"ORA-01017: Benutzername/Kennwort ungültig; Anmeldung abgelehnt". What I don't understand is, why I can connect to EMSDB.D999.DE --- but not access to the same database with a database link???

As I said, if you are not a global user according to Oracle, you would need to create a database link supplying the username and password of the user at the remote database that you want to use. Something like:
CREATE DATABASE LINK EMSDB.D999.DE

How to spy out, what kind of user (GLOBAL...) I am?Log into the local database and do:
SELECT external_name
FROM user_uses;If that return null, then you are not a global user, if it returns a value, you are a global user in that database. Log into the remote database (whatever is identified by emsdb.d999.de) and do the same thing. If the external names on both databases are not null and have the same value, then you are a global user on both databases, and the current_user should work, otherwise you are ethe not a global user on one or both databases, or you are a different global user on the two databases.

Is it possible to create a database link on an MS access data source under
oracle 10 g and Apex ?
If yes how to do it ?

I don't know what Apex is!!! But try to follow these instructions.
It works for Oracle 9i.
As far as I know, you are supposed to have installed other than ORACLE Client to complete these instructions.
1. Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Data Sources (ODBC)
Folder: System DSN /
click add
Choose : Microsoft Access Driver
Data Source Name : my_test
Description : any_description_you_want
click Database/Select... : full pathname for <your_file.mdb>
click OK
Click OK
2. Goto OH\hs\admin:
2.1) Create a copy of "inithsodbc.ora" file giving it this name:
initmy_test.ora
2.2) Edit "initmy_test.ora" and change as below.
# HS init parameters
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = my_test
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = OFF
3. Add this entry to listener ( Don't forget to stop/start the listener )
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = my_teste)
(ORACLE_HOME = <Path to OH> ) ### Ex: D:\ORANT901
(PROGRAM = hsolesql)
4. Now you need to add entries to point to the HS in the tnsnames.ora :
access =
(DESCRIPTION=
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<your_host>)(PORT=1521))
(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=my_test))
(HS=my_test)
5. Now you need to go into the database and create the database link:
CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK "ACCESS_DB" USING 'access';
6. select * from your_table@ACCESS_DB;
