OWB: is that my right choice?

Hi,
my knowledge about OWB is still very limited, so I'd like to ask you if this product could be a right choice for the following situation:
- I have an existing Oracle datawarehouse, being fed by a number of source databases (in an old-fashion manner);
- I'm going to interface new sources to this dwh, and I mean to replace any ETL used up to here with OWB.
My primary concern: is there a point in using OWB to feed an existing DWH? I've no need for new design, actually. May I use only the ETL tools in OWB, technically speaking? would it be a pointless choice to use OWB only to let sources DBs and target DWH communicate?
Thanks in advance for any suggestment.
Regards,
Emanuele

Arron,
The next major release does not have a version number assigned yet. That release is expected at the end of the year.
I respect your opinion on comparing OWB to other ETL products. However if you can list specific areas for improvement of OWB, it will be helpful. Generic statements like "it's not the best" and "weak" do not provide an actionable feedback to OWB development.
Also your opinion must be viewed in conjunction with what others in the market think. OWB has been repeatedly praised by leading analysts, industry press and other users. For example see this thread Re: comparative case study between ETL tools with messages by Roald Heie and Michael Brian Armstrong-Smith.

  • Timed sequences. Is that hte right choice and how does it works!

    Hi!
I'm a newbie in LV, and I'm trying to create a VI that is capable of controlling a small filtration unit I have build as a part of my engineering studies.
I have to control three magnetive valves which are connected to the digital output port Do0, Do1 and Do2 on my MyDAQ 6009 USB device.
I have to control the sequence by which the valves opens / closes as to avoid damage of som sensitive pressure transmitters. How do I manage to programme a time controlled sequence that opens and closes the valves in the right order and , in reverse order, repeats the sequene after a user defined choice of time?
I have looked at the "Timed sequence" but cant find a "down to earth" description on how to use it.
Maybe my problem is a bit to general. In that case I can surely help with a clarification if needed.
I hope someone can help me with my problem. By now I have spent 6 hours in watching different tutorials without any luck.
    Thanks in advance
    Henrik
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Anders!
I have looked on the State Machine solution, but couldn't really figure out where to start. As I mentioned, I'm a newbie. All I have done so far is data logging and working with analog signals (temperature logging, controlling a pump and so on). I have build a filtration unit as a part of my studies to become a chemical engineer. In order to clean the ceramic membrane in use, there is a procedure where the fluidstream is pumped back in to membrane to loosen fouled particles etc (called backflush). This is done with high pressure air. I have mounted three magnetic valves to be able to control this process.
Valve one and two has to close approx 0.5 sec before valve three opens. Valve three is allowing the high pressure air to push fluid in reveres direction and valve one is protecting a pressure transmitter with a max. overload pressure [bar] below the required pressure. After a userdefined number of seconds, the process has to be repeated in reverse order. The three valves are connected to digital I/O channel 0,1 and 2 on the USB 6009. With the Measurement and Automation explorer testpanel I can open and close the valves manually, so the connection is established. I don't have access to a PLC, which probably would be the right choice for my problem.
If you could help I would appreciate it a lot. My thesis isn't about building a filtration unit. It is more the process using it, and that is not possible right now
If the above information is insufficient, I will provide any information needed.
    Best regards

  • Told my friend to buy a Mac Pro today...right choice?

She wanted a new computer so she could edit music and video, but she only had $2200 to spend. She was gonna grab a MacBook Pro, but I told her to buy the Mac Pro but in its lowest configuration. 2.0GHz, 1GB Ram, 160 GB HD, no WiFi etc. It came in at $1962 with her student discount.
Is that the right choice? I told her it's upgradeable, but I wasn't sure if she could ever upgrade the CPU. Did I point her in the right direction? Or should she cancel her order and get the MacBook Pro?

Given her budget she's going to be tightly squeezed which ever way she goes. Ultimately, the startup price of a Mac Pro is probably going to be slightly higher if you need to consider a display. If not then they're going to more or less the same.
In my opinion you did point her in the right direction for several reasons…
    1) 2 x 2GHz Xeon processors are going to be far better than single 2.16GHz Core Duo Mobile processor. I would however suggest she makes every effort to beg, borrow or steal the cash to stick with the standard 2.66GHz processors. They're far better value than the 2GHz and will serve her far better in the long run.
    2) RAM is a real problem with all other Mac s as they're limited to 2GB. For serious video editing you want 4GB or more. With 1GB in either system she'll be struggling so it's suggest she have at least 2GB.
    3) Laptops are limited to 2.5" drives and hence, are currently limited to 160GB (which you cannot even get as a CTO option) forcing MB/MBP users into external drives. The Mac Pro you can add up to 5 drives.
    4) No RAID in the MBP which provides a huge performance boost for video editing.
    5) No DVD+R DL recording in the current MBP.
    6) No upgradeable GPU in the MBP. Even though the ATi X1600 Mobility in the MBP and the Nvidia 7300 GT are more or less the same, the Mac Pro does give upgrade options where the MBP does not.
    7) No TOSLink in the MBPs.
Having been a laptop users for some time before going with a Mac Pro I can reasonably say that the only reason I would ever recommend a laptop is that you require portability.
The MBPs do come with Airport and Bluetooth as standard although you can buy USB Bluetooth adapters cheap enough and I'd suggest using Ethernet cables in any case.
Finally, have you/she considered going with say a 24" iMac?

  • MacBook Air: the right choice for a College student?

    Hello there!
I'm buying my first Apple laptop in the near future (probably tomorrow as I like to buy things in store and not online and I live roughly 75 miles from the nearest Apple store and am heading to the mall it's located in on a shopping trip tomorrow, anyway). I currently have a 3 year old Dell that has no battery life at all (it has to be connected 24/7 to an outlet, the mouse clicky button doesn't work, it overheats, and the hardrive has already been replaced not once but twice) and I don't use it for anything other than school, facebook, watching movies via netflix, skype, and listening to music. I've been doing months of research and all has lead me to Apple.
I want this laptop to last me until I am done with my masters and into the first couple years of my teaching career, so roughly 6 years. Is that too much to ask from this machiene?
I'm inlove with the thiness, lightness and portability of the Macbook Air. I use my laptop a lot, this semester I'm finishing out my core requirements and a lot of them are "bullsh*t" classes where I can do nothing and get an A. I would therefore have my laptop with me, I also bring it to friends rooms to study and relax. My goal is to have a laptop that I can write papers, continue to watch movies and use it as a basic machiene. I barely use a cd drive (my aunt is willing to by the drive that goes with the Air) but when I do it's just for burning music to my itunes. I want a machiene that will have a long lasting battery life - that's my biggest concern.
My roomate has a Macbook Pro and keeps telling me that I'd hate the Air.
I've read that people do not like it as it does not have a backlit keyboard. That doesn't bother me as my keyboard currently isn't backlit.
I've also read that people continue to prefer the pro over the air but I am not a fan of the pro just as it is so much bigger.
I barely ever use my USB drive, when I do its to transfer over files that need to be printed.  So having only two of them means nothing to me really.
I'm just looking for assistance to help me make my decision. I feel like I already made it but I just want to be sure that I'm making the right choice.
    My personal pros/cons:
Pros: lightweight, small, highly portable, amazing webcam, excellent battery life
Cons: it's so thin I feel like I would snap it in two pieces
    Thank you so much!

    Listen to us, Lovekate!
We know you're eager, but hold out just a little longer--maybe a week or two--for the update! Please! It's the smart thing to do because it may give you options you can use. Kate! Look away from the machines. This way! This way! You can do this. If you don't, you'll feel buyers remorse and that's not good. Hold off. You'll be happy you did...also, don't forget, when you do buy, you get a student discount.
From what you say, you've found the computer you love and don't need any encouragement from us. But here's advise for what you can say to your friends:
    (1) To those telling you to get the Pro--you are not going to buy more than you need. With Clouds, and online mail and external hard drives, there is no need for you to haul around anything made heavy with a huge hard drive you'll never fill up. And the Air can do anything a Pro can do excepting update to a bigger hard drive (which you've just explained you don't need--like you don't need the CD drive). And the 13" actually has a longer lasting battery than the 13" Pro.
    (2) Why should you get a computer you don't love, and therefore is no fun or joy for you to work on, rather than a computer you love, which you will love working on? Apple rule, "Always get what you love."
    (3) To your Dad, you are buying something very like a car. And like a car, if you buy one cheap, it will cost you if it breaks down, needs repairs, or needs replacing. Needing to buy a new cheap car every other year can add up to the same cost as buying a new car that will last you ten years. You are buying a computer that will last you, be reliable, and not need repairs thus interfering with your productivity (by the way, get Apple Care--adds two more years warranty for a total of 3 years--trust us on this. If you can't afford it now, you can hold off buying it till the end of the first year, but do get it!). Apple computers also have good resale value.
In short, as much as it costs, it will be worth it.
Hope that helps, and remember...hold out! or if you've already bought it--you have 14 days to return it.

  • RMI: Is it the right choice?

I want to make an application that connects to 1 other peer. So I'd run the application and if I type in the IP of someone else running the same application, we can connect to each other and do stuff like chatting. Is RMI the right choice to make this happen?

I would use Apache MINA library. Its easy to use, fast, more firewall friendly than RMI, more language-independent transmission format. http://mina.apache.org/
Really. Where does it say that MINA knows a firewall from third base?
Mina is a Java NIO library that just does TCP and UDP communications and intra-process pipes.
It's not a competitor for RMI in any sense that I'm aware of.

  • SAP ABAP -- Is it the right choice for entering into SAP Technology

    Hi
I have 4 years experience in JAVA/J2EE. But I am planning to switch my career now to SAP. I am planning for doing course in SAP ABAP.
Please anyone suggest me if SAP ABAP would be a right choice. And how is the demand in SAP ABAP at present.
Can I explore myself in SAP ABAP at this point.
    Best Regards
    Ranjan

Just out of curiosity - why switch to SAP in the first place?
Yes, if you are good at programming, then yes ABAP is the way to go. But please remember that while searching for jobs you will still be considered a fresher - in ABAP. You JAVA background has very little - if not zero - significance when it comes to experience.
Of course you can go ahead and explore the ABAP world. You can download the trial version from the site and start pulling a few levers to see if you are comfortable.

  • Is Netweaver the right choice?

We have recently upgrading our portal/webdynpro server to NW 7.0 Support Stack 14 (J2EE only).  While this stack level fixed some issues that we were having (in particular cleanup of JCO pools to prevent expired SSO ticket errors) it also introduced some other problems with Oracle.  This has led us to the discussion of whether Netweaver is the right choice for our custom application development environment. I'm posting this to get some feedback on what other companies are doing with their Netweaver enviroments.  I'm particularly interested in custom application development using webdynpro and the Netweaver Portal.
We've been running various permutations of the Netweaver platform since 2005 (BI, Portals, and now ERP).  We are using a single J2EE instance to host the SAP EP, a custom jsp "intranet", and our webdynpro apps (we have 6 custom webdynpro apps).  Our user base is somewhere between 150-250 users.  We use the portal to access these custom apps, our BW web templates, and some SAP transactions.  With the rolllout of some of these custom apps, our portals environment is now becoming mission critical and we seem to continue to have problems with the stability of the J2EE engine on the portal machine.
Are other customers having stability problems with NW04s?  Are other customers using web dynpro and SAP's enterprise portal for Mission Critical applications?  If so, what do your environments look like?  If not, what are you using for custom applications that communicate with SAP and other systems?
Thanks for any and all input
    Eric

Assuming your legacy apps don't need to update the new OM system an MDB sounds reasonable. You may want to consider passing the messages as XML and using a library (JAXB/P, castor etc) for parsing / inserting into a database.
You should also work out how to handle technical failures updating the legacy database and poison messages (i.e. when an invalid message is received). You may decided to automatically retry technical failures a set number of times before moving them to a backout queue. There's no point retrying poison messages as they'll repeatedly fail, but you may need to fix / manually insert them.

  • Is ADF right choice for my use case ?

    Hi All
I have requirement to build UI application where we want to accept some input from User and invoke the web service.
And depending upon the web service display the message.
Well I am not sure ADF is right choice for that ? Isn't ADF mostly used when we have to perform operations on database objects?

ADF works fine for your use case. You can build components for your Model from web services and expose those components in a Data Control. Then in your ViewController, you can drag items from the Data Control to use on your web pages. Here is a tutorial from OTN:

I assume this is Apple Mail. Try this:
    Preferences > Accounts > your-first-account
Select Outgoing Mail Server of account/name you wish to use and check Use only this server
    Repeat for other accounts.

  • How do I get rid of that annoying right-hand column in Reader 11.0.3?

It just won't go away!  I can't find anything on the menus to get rid of it.  It blocks the view of whichever document I'm trying to read.  What's odd is that when I first opened a PDF document, it looked just fine; but subsequent openings of the same document had that right-hand column blocking about one-fourth of the document, requiring horizontal scrolling.  Who can be bothered?  Please tell me this is an easy fix.  Thank you!

Half of a solution has been offered for this problem: Click on Tools, then click on Tools again. This is so un-obvious that I have to guess it removes the column as a fluke of what's been clicked, not because that is the defined way to remove the column. And the screen shot helped those who haven't seen it. But I've been reading the Freakonomics guys and I have to say that the right question was not asked. Here's the right question:
How can I keep that stupid worthless column from EVER showing up again? I mean, it's nice to have instructions on how to change a tire, but it's even nicer to have a car that doesn't have a blowout every time I try to go for a drive!
I have searched Preferences and cannot find anything that seems to relate to it.
Thanks for your attention to this issue.

In Excel 2010 i was able to use the external parameters within MS Query returning that data right into a pivot table.  But the parameter on the worksheet will not save in the paremeter setting of the data connection.  And if you save it and open
it and try to refresh the pivot table Excel stops responding and you have to force the file closed.  I found out the reason to crash is that it did not keep the parameter saved.
    Can this be fixed?

I am planning to buy an ipad mini, please suggest me whether its the right choice to go for or not ?
    Hows the display?

The Ipad 4 has a stronger processor, and better graphics and display than the Mini. but they can basically do the same things.
Obviously one is smaller than  the other, but at the end, the games will still play on both, and you may not even notice a difference.

  • Where did the window go that gives the choice to connect by bonjour to a wireless printer in Mac OS 10.8?

I am trying to set up a wireless printer to a new macbook pro.  Both the printer and the computer are on the same network but are "not connected".  The printer works fine connected USB.  In previous systems there is a window that gives the choice of how to connect and bonjour is listed along with USB.  I cannot seem to find that window in 10.8.  I think the computer is just trying to connect USB and needs to be told to look for wireless printers?  The printer does not even appear in the add window when it is unplugged.  The drivers are updated.  I have restarted everything.  I have also run the wireless set up app that came with the printer.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks, Barbara

First is the wireless in the printer connected to your router? Is the Mac connected wireless to that same router? Can the Mac ping (/YourHardDrive/Applications/Utilities/Network Utility, ping mini-tab) the printer's IP (that your wireless router gave to that printer)?
Plus in 10.8.x to add a printer is first to get it's "driver" for that printer. Sometimes Apple might have a driver (for certain models) that will get in Software Update (when printer is attched to your Mac). The other way is to go to printer's web page and get their latest OS X drivers.
Then once you have the drive just open System Preferences->Print & Scan pane and use the + button to add the new driver for the printer. For this networked printer make sure you get the IP of that printer because you might need that IP here.
