Pacman doesn't work. It times out

Hi:
I install arch linux on virtualBox, then I tried pacman -Sy, but it timed out at the end. I try to remove most of the URLs in mirrors, but it doesn't work.
Is there any idea?

is your host name that is set in rc.conf the same as the one in /etc/hosts ? If not, then that is your problem. A mismatch in hostnames will slow down the network along with a host of issues.
if they match, check your mirrors using rankimirrors. It needs python, so you will have to have that installed. It will tell you which are the faster mirrors for you. I don't think it should matter that you are running under virtualbox or otherwise, as long as you have configured the network correctly.

  • [Solved] Localtime is messed up, and pacman doesn't work anymore

    Hi everyone,
    I'm quite new to Arch Linux but I've succeded so far in installing the base system, setting up my wifi card (wasn't easy) and installing xfce4. When I first installed everything seemed to work fine (wifi, dropbox, pacman, etc.) but I noticed that my time doesn't reflect the current local time. I've selected America/Montreal in rc.conf and through "Orage Globaltime" in xfce4 but both return the UTC instead of the localtime. Also, when I try to get the UTC from Orage, it returns my localtime instead (Montreal)...
    So there's definitely something wrong there. I've then had a look at the forums/wiki and found that a network synchronisation should be used to correct the issue (such as ntp) but now pacman can't connect to anything. It returns something like this when I try to install/update/search:
    $ sudo pacman -Syu
    Password:
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.us.leaseweb.net : Connection time-out
    ^C (keeps on getting time-outs if I don't interrupt)
    Some info on my system:
    General info: as stated above, internet over wifi (wlan0) works, pacman times-out and the local time is off.

    My first guess was that the localtime offset was preventing me from accessing pacman's repositories, but since it worked yesterday (when the time was already corrupt) it seems otherwize. Now I'm quite lost, especially since no one seems to report every pacman repository being down... could anyone please help me solve this problem?
    Thanks!

    WonderWoofy wrote:I think you may find relevant information here.  I ahve seem many of these threads in the forums lately.  Are you dual booting w/ another operating system... in particular, one that uses localtime for the hardware clock (and there is only one that does this).
    Thanks I'll look at that entry. Still I'd like to point out that this page clearly says that the timezone is to be set in rc.conf, which is a bit confusing. I must've followed this guide to get to my current configuration. I am dual booting with multiple other systems (xubuntu, win7, puppy, crunchbang) so from what I've read win7 might be the problem, but I haven't started it since i installed arch and my time has been off from the start.
    Should I simply use NTP now that pacman is working again?
    Thanks

  • Home buttom doesn't work some times

    home button doesn't work some times

    I've been having the same problem...   I went to the apple store.  They weren't much help.  The guy told me I need to make a genuis bar appointment and they'd likely have to replace the device (phone) at a certain cost.   Determined by the tech at the time.
    Doesnt sound like much fun or very cheap...
    I live in Minneapolis and within the same mall as the Apple store theres a game store that said they can replace the home button for 20 dollars!!   That its a loose wire and/or the spring inside doesnt work.   But the warrantee their work and you cant beat the price vs apple store.   They had to order some home buttons as they were out at the time so I'm going in on Sat.
    Lets home theres more alternatives to these types of problems as Apple as seemed to be on their high horse about things like that a little too much lately.
    I dont think you live in Minneapolis but I'd look around...  It sounds like this is a common problem so you might have some luck finding someone to do it for less than 100-200 dollars that Apple wants to charge.

  • Need to have an alert sound when the program I'm working in times out

    I work at the Univ of Utah. We have a program that times out after 40 mins. I've been told by the campus IT folks that Firefox does not supply an alert sound option for this type of situation. Is this information correct? If not, where do I find the option to have an alert sound?

    Thanks! - worked great!!!...
    I checked out the onStatus function in the help documentation
    before I posted the thread, but didn't understand how to use it.
    Based on your code below, I still kind of don't (even though the
    code works fine)...
    Can you kind of explain, line by line, what's going on in the
    little tidbit of code that you wrote. That way I'm not just fishing
    for help blindly, and I can actually learn something so I don't
    have to bother people in these forums in the future (and maybe help
    others!)
    Thanks again, Leo - much appreciated!!!...

  • GoToAndPlay doesn't work second time

    I have made a simple animation using only the timeline. The animation is covered by a button "Knapp"  (alpha 0) wich activates the actions. The whole thing works fine the first time. The last action says go to and play frame 2, wich has two actions: stop + go to and play frame 4. But this action does not work the second time. I tried to set the action to frame 3 instead of 2 and the same problem occured on another action on the timeline as well.
    Here is the last action on my timeline:
    Knapp.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fl_ClickToGoToAndPlayFromFrame_11);
    function fl_ClickToGoToAndPlayFromFrame_11(event:MouseEvent):void
        gotoAndPlay(2);
    This is the action on frame 2 (I have removed the instructions):
    stop();
    Knapp.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fl_ClickToGoToAndPlayFromFrame);
    function fl_ClickToGoToAndPlayFromFrame(event:MouseEvent):void
        gotoAndPlay(4);

    Thanks. When I read your answer I discovered "Knapp" was divided in two keyframes. But after i fixed it, it still doesn't work. I have got the animation to end at frame 1 now, after removing the "goto"-action in the last frame, hoping the animation would loop. But it still doesn't continue to frame 2 and follow the same actions as before. It stops at frame 1. I have tryed to use another action in frame 1 to make it play frame 2, but without success. Irritating. Other suggestions?

  • 5.1 rear out doesn't work, but line out and front stereo does

    I got my new HP Pavilion p6-2440el Desktop today, but when I tried to plug my 5.1 audo to it (the one with the 3 jacks)  it turned out that the 5.1 audio doesn't work, and the Windows'es "playback devices" panel lists the "IDT High definition audio" as not plugged. Sticking any jack to the front or into the line out in the rear changes it to plugged, but obviously with the stereo sound only. I even tried to download the more recent audio driver (found it in google, 6.10.6486.0, the one I got from the Windows update had a lower version) but it's still the same. Any idea how I can fix it? Thanks.

    I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial computer. You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/ .

  • My home button doesn't work at times

    Sometimes my home button on my 4s doesn't work which is strange because I just bought it not even a week ago. I think this is a defect will Apple change it for me

    Hi Aleforiero,
    Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
    Use these steps to determine if your iPhone hardware is working properly:
    The Home button isn't working
    Put the iPhone to sleep.
    Wait a couple of seconds.
    Press the Home button.
    iPhone should wake up.
    If iPhone does not wake up, then iPhone should be serviced.
    You can find this information and a link to contact Apple Support in case your phone requires service in this article:

  • Time Machine doesn't work for one out of four computers

    I have Time Machine running on my Time Capsule and three out of my four computers are backing up reliably. My MacBook Air was away from home for six weeks and on my return TM refused to start. I have deleted the old backup file and set up TM again. I get the usual "Preparing for Backup" message but this persists for ever (at least for 48 hours). A backup file sized at about 250MB is created on the Time Capsule but that is all. During this time there is no evidence of activity and I have finally had to cancel the backup and turn off TM. I've tried everything I can think of but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

    I have solved this and thought others might be interested. Last evening I was at the London Mac User Group monthly meeting and raised this problem during the Q&A session. One member asked if I had anti-virus protection installed on the MacBook Air. Indeed I did. I had installed iAntiVirus during my absence from home. So I first tried disabling iAntiVirus and this did not work. I then uninstalled the package and rebooted. Time Machine then sprang into life and is working as advertised. It seems that some (if not all) anti-virus systems can prevent TM from working, but I am not sure why.

  • Pacman doesn't work after fresh install

    Hi everyone, I just installed archlinux on my very old 400Mhz Dell Latitude, but now pacman won't do anything, I can't sync, I can't install anything, ... The install did have some issues, but I'm not sure if that is causing this
    The output from 'pacman -Sy'
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    error: failed to synchronize core:
    error: failed to synchronize extra:
    error: failed to synchronize commutity:
    error: failed to synchronize any databases
    The pacman log doesn't say anything interesting, the configs look okay. That output is spit out rather quickly too, I'm not sure if it's even trying to use the internet (which is working)
    Can you help me?

  • Password doesn't work after time machine recovery!

    My hard drive failed.  Got a new one installed.  Re-installed Mac OSX 10.4 from my original disks.  Then upgraded to Leopard with my upgrade disk.  Used Migration Assistant to bring over my old files etc from Time Machine...  When I used Migration Assistant it said something about usernames being the same or something so I just renamed it as per one of the options.  Everything seemed fine until I shut down my computer, restarted it, and my password no longer works.  What the ****??  When I attempt to reset the password using the OSX 10.4 disk it says that I cannot and that I do not have permission.  When I try to boot from the Leopard upgrade disk I cannot do so, it just spits out the disk and boots from the HD and I'm back to square 1.  Argh!  Any suggestions??

    BTW, correct password hint is there, just doesn't access computer.

  • External Hard Drive doesn't work after Time Machine cancelation

    First post on the forum.
    So far i've had 2 hard drives broken because of a simple Time Machine.
    I own a MBP and an HP so my hard drives usually have 2 partitions, one for mac, the other for pc. About a month or so i was doing a Time Machine on my Iomega 1TB (the partition used for the time machine is formatted in Mac Os Expanded (with journaling)),  and, because the time machine was extremely slow i stopped it. Then came the problems. I tried to connect the Iomega to the mac, but the partition in which i had the time machine doesn't mount. the other partition is mountable and i even managed to delete some files in it, so it worked. But now the partitions don't mount. I can still see the two partitions in Disk Utility, with the correct names i gave them, but cannot mount.
    Right now i don't have the disk with me because i went to a "professional" to try and at least recover my files. What a joke that was. First they told me they had my recovered files and them the files were not mine. The switched the disks and gave me someone elses files. And now they ask me for 1100$ to recover my files because it is a hardware malfunction. Obviously i dont have that amount of money available and i cannot afford the recovery atm, and i do not believe that a software can cause hardware to fail. (just guessing)
    Resume: 1 external hard drive, with 2 partitions, one mac os expanded and the other is a Windows NT Filesystem. None of the partitions are corrently mounting on mac but the disk utility recognizes the partitions and the names i gave them.
    So guys can u help a poor little girl that needs her photographies so that she can go and show her portfolio to get a job. :/
    Kinda desperate at this point.
    ps: sorry for bad english, second language

    One can't read the other.
    Just to be clear Mac's can read/write FAT32 but windows cannot use OS X Extended. So to use a drive on both systems it needs to be formatted FAT32
    FAT32 does have limitations and possibly the best solution is to use NTFS, a more modern, robust filesystem. The drawback here is that OS X does not natively read NTFS so a third party kernel extension is needed.

    Hi,
    Wen I try upgrade my systeme with pacman, he sais me:

    Yaourt too dosen't work.
    I searched some answers but I did not find anything about that...

    errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    [root@blabla ~]
    Just, the errors messages is for any files who pacman try to replace by the packages file's (so for every packages I have that).
    I really think the pacman's database is broken. Exist a possibility to restor it?

  • Mybook World doesn't work with time machine  What do it do?

    I have just installed Lion and now Time Macine cannot access my MyBook World Edition network drive.  Any ideas?

    Had the same problem and found out that there is an issue with these on Time Machine in Lion.
    The WD Support Notice
    Cause:
    Apple has changed the requirements of OSX's internal file protocol (AFP) to version 3.3. Any external drive that wishes to take advantage of the Time Machine software must comply with this new requirement. WD's internal software does not yet meet this requirement, and as such, Time Machine on OSX 10.7.x (Lion) will not be able to establish a connection.
    Solution:
    A firmware update for the My Book Live, The My Book World (White Light), and WD ShareSpace is in development to update the version of Netatalk (to 2.2). At the current time, there is no work around available.

  • ITunes Match doesn't work at times-  in the same room (on Wifi) I will add a song to my playlist on the iMac- instantly it appears on my iPad but not on my iPhone 6plus

    ITunes Match is extremely unpredictable-  in the same room of my house on the same WiFi- all my devices are up to date (software wise). I will add a song on my iMac 27". To a playlist I created-  Instantly the song shows in the playlist on my IPad Air2. But it does NOT show in my playlist on my iPhone 6plus-  I reboot everything- even do a hard-wired sync- it just won't appear-  sometimes- frustrated with the time I am wasting I just email (from my iMac) the song to myself so that I can play it on my iPhone 6Plus-   I create a lot of music on my iMac using Logic Pro- and there are times I want to have the process (songs in the marking) available on my iPhone so I can play them while driving, etc.,  extremely frustrating as this issue is very new -  had no problems for months and months but now I do- I rebooted everything (phone, etc.,) created a new play list-and then it appeared on the iPhone in the new playlist-  BUT if I want to add a song to the new playlist- same situation- never appears on the iPhone but does appear on my iPad IMac and MacBook Pro-  ITunes Match is turned on- I am on the same WiFi FAST network at my house-  Any ideas ?

    Hi Rob- I'm guessing it has something to do with all the update stuff Apple keeps doing (with Yosemite, etc.,) extremely frustrating - also whenever I load up iTunes on any of my devices- I am asked to enter my passcode- which I will do- then I am asked to do it 2 or 3 more times - right after the other- crazy how annoying something like that can be- I have looked online for solutions- i.e. close out of the account, reset the passcode- all of it- nothing seems to fix that situation either-  what I have discovered (playing around) is on my iPhone 6+ if I go to settings and turn OFF iTunes match- then turn it back ON- suddenly all the music that wasn't loaded shows up magically- but I had to do that each time I'd update songs in my playlist on the iMac- then go to the iPhone and turn off the match- then turn it back on- almost like it is resetting things-
