Pacman -Syu locks on manpages download

Just did pacman -Syu like normal and 3 times, it locked up on downloading the manpages. we're talking where it gets to 37% or something like that and 10 minutes later, still idling there. I havent seen anyone mention this, but I'd be suprised if this was a "me" thing and not an "arch" thing. Just thought I'd bring it to attention. And no, im not having any problems with my network whatsoever.
-Miesnerd

I'm having the same problem as Miesnerd. I came home after a month to find updates to a bounty of packages clocking in at about ~350 megabytes of data. I first updated the kernel and Pacman, then the rest of my packages. Unfortunately, Pacman keeps freezing when grabbing the packages. Sometimes it pulls down a few hundred kilobytes, but never more than eight or so megabytes. If I stop with ctrl-c and restart the process, it grabs a bit more, then freezes again. A "freeze" constitutes Pacman no longer making any progress in fetching packages, even if left running for hours. After about thirty runs of pacman -Syu, I now have about 170 megabytes of packages completed, but something must be wrong with Pacman, my Arch config, or both.
I use the Georgia Tech mirror and have no other problems with TCP/IP applications.

  • All downloaded files via pacman -Syu are corrupted

I have a fresh install of AL and wanted to do a 'pacman -Syu' before going too far. Well it started fine and was downloading the files (about 20 in the list) and so I left it to finish while I slept last night.
This morning I wake up and check it and it shows all files that it tried to upgrade/install are corrupted. I'm using the 'Current & Extras' repositories in pacman.conf.
Is there something that I'm missing or doing wrong or a way to fix this without needing to re-install AL from scratch again?
    rberry88 :?:

This is somewhat interesting unless I'm misinterpreting it wrong. I go to /var/cache/pacman/pkg and it listed the last 3 items/packages that I installed, I then did df -h and then did 'pacman -Sc' to clear these out and did df -h again:
    [root@tux pkg]# ls
    evolution-1.4.5-4.pkg.tar.gz gnet1-1.1.9-1.pkg.tar.gz pan-0.14.2-1.pkg.tar.gz
    [root@tux pkg]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part8
    22G 1.5G 21G 7% /
    none 251M 0 251M 0% /dev/shm
    tmpfs 2.0G 12K 2.0G 1% /tmp
    [root@tux pkg]# pacman -Sc
    removing packages from cache... done.
    [root@tux pkg]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part8
    22G 1.4G 21G 7% /
    none 251M 0 251M 0% /dev/shm
    tmpfs 2.0G 12K 2.0G 1% /tmp
    [root@tux pkg]#
So, my opinion would be that it wasn't the disc space that was an issue but most likely a corrupted download or other problem that went away when I cleared the cache and installed the new pacman version.

  • [SOLVED] Failed pacman -Syu system update

I tried update pacman -Syu and gave me this message:
error: failed to init transaction (unable to lock database)
if you're sure a package manager is not already
    running, you can remove /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
    so I changed db.lck to db.lck.bac
and when I pacman -syu   pacman gave me this mesage:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    initscripts: /etc/profile.d/locale.sh exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    any Ideals?

  • [SOLVED] Pacman -Syu on a (very) limited bandwidth

    Hi
I've been using Arch for about a year, and I'm still pretty new to Linux and Arch. The reason I installed Arch in the first place was because of the how much control you have over your system, since you get to build it up according to your preferences. I absolutely love Arch for this and many other reasons.
The problem I have is that I am limited to 500mb bandwidth a month. I know this wrong, but I always avoid pacman -Syu because of the 500mb limit. I avoid any necessary upgrading, and only upgrade packages that need to be upgraded whenever I need to install a new package that I need. I know very well that this is the wrong thing to do, but seeing as I am limited to 500mb a month (which I already use alot of, if not all, on university stuff), I don't see how I could possibly carry out frequent system upgrades. Could anyone give me some advice? Should I not be using a rolling release distro because of this?

    @JackH79
Hope it'll work out all right for you. Would be a shame to lose you to an 'enemy distros' , just because of bandwidth restrictions.
Thank you. Don't worry, getting me off Arch is not gonna be easy
    @syn
So is the public library's wifi off limits?
hmm...getting to the public library would be troublesome. I doubt most public libraries here have wifi anyways The uni library, as well as the rest of campus, gives us access to internet via wifi, but it has a ridiculous 150mb cap. Luckily, downloads on the uni network are unlimited, and I have a good feeling the Arch mirror is on the uni network. I'll just have to wait and see.
    @mvdvarrier
Thank you. I was thinking about using Slackware, and it really helps knowing that the updates are small. I feel that I have found the solution because of my uni's arch mirror, but if that and all other attempts to stick to Arch fails, I think that sounds like a great plan B Still gonna try my best to keep Arch, I haven't used many distro's (Ubuntu, slight tinkering on a Fedora based distro...and Puppy Linux, Slax Frodo and ttylinux if tiny live distros count), but I really do like Arch's way of doing things.

  • Pacman -Syu returns system up to date after a new 2008.03 (solved)

I just installed arch from the march 08 live cd (the new cd got stuck on the grub boot screen, but that is another bug for another thread).
I eventually got a totally working installation (installing only core packages).
what's strange is, i've updated pacman's package list and a pacman -Syu says the local system is up to date, but for whatever reason, no package was actually downloaded or updated. My kernel is stil 2.6.24-arch, my klibc is 1.5.5... What gives?
everything i read says all you need to do is run a pacman -Syu, but clearly there should have been updates from the core packages between march and now? (i know there has been, and that packages are updated constantly).
clearly i'm missing something simple here. Sorry for the stupid question.
(i uncommented the achlinux.org repo line in the mirrorlist, and i'm sure this is the server pacman is using).
    thanks for any help.

(edited Syu typo and subject, sorry)

oops, my bad. that was a typo.
a pacman -Syu yields a local database is up to date
the first time i did a pacman -Sy it downloaded and updated some new dbs... but the  -Syu has always returned that the system is up to date, when i'm fairly certain it isnt... if i am running kernel 2.6.24, that is old right? i should be presented with some updates if i just installed the march live cd...
    thanks,
    m

  • [SOLVED] Broken SLiM after pacman -Syu

I know that it's good to understand the rolling release approach from ArchLinux and that an update may have unforeseen consequences.
Yesterday I wasn't that smart and updated my system using pacman -Syu. I'm having the system with SLiM and Cinnamon on top. Now
when I login I get the message: "failed to execute login command".
    I already googled the error (SLIM+error) here: https://www.google.nl/#q=slim%20error%2 … %20command
And I've checked .xinitrc and slim.conf. everything looks just fine.
When I put in my ArchLinux cd, boot from it, /mnt my /dev/SDA1, bash and try to see what error I get from the system then I see a message
about PulseAudio (but guess my check was useless ). Anyway, my Pacman log is down here, my log from SLiM and Xorg.
    Pacman:

My image I built with CloneZilla was corrupted so I'm kind of lost for now.

Trilby wrote:What are you doing?  Wine was never a problem.
I'm sorry - I was trying to help myself by following the errors, as reported.  It seemed that my problem stemmed from lib32-harfbuzz and lib32-freetype2, so I was attempting to remove those.  However, wine was dependent on them so had to be removed first.
I told you want needed to be done.  If you ignore provided advice and instead do other random things (without actually specifying what you are doing) then no one can help you.
Indeed, your posting did point me in the right direction, but did not appear until after I had posted about my experiment with wine.  Wine is no great loss, anyway - I've never managed to achieve anything useful with it!
As you indicated, my problems were resolved by updating package-query:
    yaourt package-query
Edit: In my searching, I did come across advice to use pacaur instead of yaourt - I'm not sure whether this would have made any difference in my case.
My analysis, wrongly or rightly, is this:
    1) AUR packages (some?) appear to list pacman version as a dependency.  "pacman -Syu" was attempting to update itself to 4.2 which broke the dependency (<4.2), even though 4.1.x was running at the time - there's a recipe for confusion!  This was resolved by rebuilding package-query before updating the rest of the system, because the latest version has updated the pacman dependency.
    2) lib32-harfbuzz and lib32-freetype2 (both AUR packages?) were in conflict - they cannot (must not) be dependent on each other.  This was resolved by pulling later versions during the rebuild of package-query.
    3) The libreoffice problem was not an issue.  My mistake was that I ignored a lifetime of experience working in IT - I concentrated on the last-reported error rather than the first!  All I can say in my defence is that eight years of retirement must have addled my brain!
In short, two, unrelated, errors, conflated with another, relatively insignificant, error message, led me on a wild goose chase.
I thank you for your wise counsel!

  • [SOLVED] Weird question: pacman -Syu nothing to do for quite a while

    Hi,
Perhaps this an odd question but I feel like for the past 2-3 weeks on two different computers "pacman -Syu" returns "x up to date" for all repos and "nothing to do" as the result. Could nothing really be upgradeable for this long? Can anyone else confirm this or has something gotten goofed? Is there a way to check actual versions with what I have to make sure things really are working properly? Even if nothing was upgradeable I can't remember the last time I saw core, extra, or community actually download without doing "pacman -Syyu". They alway say up to date and I'm thinking this just can't be correct...
What might help for me to post? I haven't changed anything in pacman.conf or pacman.d/mirrorlist...
    Thanks,
    John

  • Pacman -Syu reports up to date(upgraded ok today)

    Two problems accur with pacman.
    If I try
    pacman -Syu
    I get :
    bash-4.0# pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date
    community is up to date
    :: Starting full system upgrade...
warning: avidemux: local (2.5.1-1) is newer than extra (2.5.0-1)
local database is up to date
    bash-4.0#
But there is a new extra package for avidemux now and the kernel is an upgrade as well.  These are not recognized and downloaded and installed.
I tried changing mirrors and also pacman.conf to allow wget.
Attempt to use wget resulted in ...xfer command not recognized.
I am not able to upgrade to the new kernel.
However, in another HDD with archlinux I am able to upgrade the kernel.
Pacman seems to be malfunctioning for the HDD not upgrading.
Tried ...pacman -Syy but no help.
    Tried reinstall pacman...no help.
Does having avidemux-2.5.1-1 already in my machine cause this problem?
Last edited by lilsirecho (2009-08-21 16:23:36)

You're getting the avidemux message because you are now using a mirror  that is not as up-to-date as the one you used to install avidemux-2.5.1-1.
The sync problem can affect all packages.  If all the bandwith is used to sync the lost packages then there is none left to sync the newer packages.

  • Pacman + -Syu = system freeze

I cannot post console output because system freeze so i cannot cut& paste. My pacman output is localized so my translation may not be 100% accurate
    After i pacman -Syu
i get a list of packages hit y
    they get downloaded
    then pacman is checking dependencies...done
    then
i get checking package integrity and
then i get something like(note translation may be not exact)
    memory security violated
    then my system freeze...
I tried to upp one package by pacman -S and it was done okay
Really do not know what is going on
edit: my box is preety up-to-date i did full upgrade 2-3 days ago. I'm running stock kernel form current ,i'm not using testing at all.

blender is using the NAN makefiles to build, so we can access some better
    features:
    - i18n support
    - anti-aliased interface fonts
    - gameplayer
We also ship the plugins, but most of these features can be accessed only
from the users home directory. Therefore, you wanna copy everything from
/usr/share/blender to ~/.blender (some are hidden files!). The browser-
plugin builds but is using an old mozilla API, this is why it doesn't work
    and we don't ship it.

I assume I need to wait for open-vm-tools to be updated now?

Wait until your server upload the recent Arch Linux updates. Than you will be able to upgrade it. Or do like i had: download open-bm-tools from Arch Linux official site  and install it and then issue "pacman -Syu".

Thank you.  That solved my same problem as well.
But on my screen the text scrolled  by so fast that i could barely read it and I could not scroll up to read the beginning.
how can I pipe the output so that it does not scroll so fast.  i thought this was the "less" command but when i typed:
    less pacman -Syu
    or
    pacman -Syu less
I got errors in syntax.  I am a noob coming from 1 year using Ubuntu.  I have worked thru many errors to get this far in the install.
The forums where down so I was on my own and had to use trial and error and the beginner wiki.  im glad now forums back online because i never woould have figured out this klibc error on my own.
