Page Life Expectancy drops to zero even if buffer has pages that are several minutes old

Scenario: SQL 2014 with 10 GB allocated memory. There are three tables in a database with 3 GB data in each. PLE is pretty high(1000s).
I query first table, it gets loaded into memory and takes up 3 GB, verified by sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptors. PLE keeps rising at the rate of 1 per second. I query second table, it gets loaded into memory and takes up another 3 GB. PLE still keeps going
up at the rate of 1 per second. I query the third table, it gets loaded into memory and takes up 3 GB. SQL flushes out some pages of first table from memory and the first table is now occupying only 500 MB of memory. So, SQL did not flush out all pages
of first table. The difference between time when the first table was loaded and when the third table was loaded was more than 5 minutes. However, when the third table was loaded, PLE went down to close to 0 even though there
are pages from first table in memory that are over 5 minutes old. Does someone know why PLE would go down to close to 0? I thought it would go down to somewhere around 300(5 minutes).
Note: This was done on a test server with no one else using the server and no other app on the server. So, no interference.

Hi,
There was bug in SQL Server 2012 which caused this behavior. Please read this
support article reason given by MS was
The resource monitor and lazy writer activities in SQL Server are designed to maintain cache sizes and free list capacities to avoid memory shortage situations. Under rare circumstances, the memory manager in the SQL Server database engine may enable
the SHRINK state for the Buffer Pool for longer than required. When approaching the memory target, a sudden burst of memory allocations may cause memory allocation failures and internal retries. During the retry activities, the memory manager can enable
SHRINK states on the various caches in order to support the new memory requests. Under these retries there is a small window in which the SHRINK state may remain enabled longer than necessary to restore the free list capacities.
This causes a temporary release of more memory than is required to return to a steady state. For example, the buffer pool can release more data pages than required, inflating the free list depths and reducing the page life expectancy (PLE) for the buffer
pool. In this situation, you'll notice a quick decline in the SQLServer:Buffer Manager\Page life expectancy
performance counter values and a quick increase in SQLServer:Memory Manager\Free Memory (KB) performance counter values.
I am not sure you are hitting this behavior in SQL Server 2014.

  • Print only pages that are checked on page one??? Hidden is possible?

Please help. I know a little about java and acrobat but not enough to do everything I want.
I am making a form that has many pages but not all the pages apply to every event. So what I want to do is put a number of check boxes near the top of the form. When I print I only want the pages that are represented by the checked boxes to print.  Even better, I would like those pages not visible at all just print. For example: Page one is a form that one would fill out: name, address, phone number, etc. Near the bottom that person would check all that apply: page A, page B, etc. That’s all he would see but when printed, it prints out the form and any of the pages that are checked.
    Am I asking too much?
Thank you for any and all help.

It's possible to use a script to print only certain pages, but any contiguous page ranges have to be sent as a single print job. For example, to print pages 1-5, 10-20, and the single page 50, you would have to issue 3 separate print statements.
It's possible to have non-visible pages (templates), but it's not possible to print them until they are displayed. Since Reader 11 now supports templates, it would be possible to display the selected pages in the order that you want, which would presumably be a single continous range of pages, which would then require just a single print statement, as opposed to multiple ones as described above.

Using IBook, I can't seem to figure out how to insert a blank page inbetween pages that are already set up, like if you want to add some pictures or something.  Anyone have any tips on this?  Thanks, Mark

To enable the form to be signed in Reader you will need to open the form in Acrobat; goto Advanced>Enable Usage Rights and then save this copy of the form for sending out to the users.
The user should then be able to edit and digitally sign the form. They can then email the signed/saved pdf as a browsed for attachment or via the email icon in the toolbar. Note - if you have created an email submit button on the form, then unless they have Acrobat they could only return an xml file.
The other way to do this however is to create a dataset by 'distributing' the form. This time the Email Return button will send back a full version of the form. During the distribution setup you will have the option to email the form directly or to save it and send it later,so you can send to users as and when or even post it to a website or intranet.
When you receive and open the returned form it will ask whether you want to add it to the predetermined dataset (or if you want to categorise the returns into geographical areas for example, you could create new additional datasets at this point). If the form is data heavy however, the dataset will become very large and unwieldy pretty quickly, but you can export the data from it (including signatures) in xml format and import this into an Excel spreadsheet.
To simplify the Excel xml import process I'd recommend you carefully structure your form in the hierarchy (LiveCycle) into the order you would want the data items to appear in your spreadsheet and switch off those data items that you will not need by setting the default binding for the irrelevant fields to "None".
Clear as mud? Hope this helps.

  • Using hyper-links in a jsp pages that are in a Session

Hi i am trying to include a hyper-links in my jsp pages that are in a Session, however when i use the links to navigate throughout the pages i get a java.lang.NullPointerException. The Session begins after the user has been validated i.e
    String cid= request.getParameter("counsellorID")
    session.setAttribute("counsellorID",cid);
All the pages included within the session have a session scope=session
; and they call the attributes that have been set when the session first begins i.e
    String counsID= (String) (session.getAttribute("counsellorID"));
Any advice on this problem would be most appreciated!
    Many Thanks

How do I create a SimpleSearch that would not return pages that are marked to be hidden in navigation?

AFAIK SimpleSearch implementation is for simple fulltext search and can't use it, you need to use either with sql or xpath

  • Pages that are published stay "Red" and don't turn "Blue"

I had iWeb 08. Whenever I updated it would turn the pages in the sidebar from "Red" to "Blue". So whenever I made a change iWeb would know just to publish the pages that were changed. BUT NOW WITH IWEB 09... Whenever I click publish... ALL THE PAGES STAY "RED" AND DON'T TURN "BLUE"!!! So if i see a small spelling mistake it WILL PUBLISH THE WHOLE SITE THAT IS 9.0GB AND IT TAKES 6 HOURS. When the change should at tops take only 3 MINUTES!!! It is making me mad and when i need to make little changes it takes six hours to update. And keeps republishing the entire site... I even tried clicking publish entire site to see if that would change it blue and it still didn't work. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

When you publish to a local folder, all the pages do indeed turn blue. When you relaunch the site in iWeb they are all red again.
I gave up publishing to MobileMe a long time ago and, by introducing the new and exciting but almost useless FTP, Apple seem to have noticed that others are less than satisfied with this service.
If you want anybody outside of the Mac community to see your website then you are going to have to rethink your publishing arrangements.
A 9.0 GB site is very small. If it didn't upload in 6 minutes I would be unhappy!
I publish to a local folder and optimize and upload my files to Host Excellence using the application Web Site Maestro. This application doesn't need iWeb to tell it what files have changed. It figures it out all on its own and only optimizes and uploads these.
Even a fairly simple iWeb built site will struggle to load on a PC running Internet Explorer if you don't optimize your images before loading into iWeb and optimize all the files before upload.

  • Ipod 5 will not boot up from no batteries even though it has been charging for 30 minutes.

I bought an iPod Touch 5th generation in December 2013. It is completely out of batteries and when I plug it in it says it's charging but never boots up. Now when I plug it in the iPod doesn't even show the dead batterie sign. I have tried multiple adapters that are certified by Apple but the two USB to Thunderbolt cables I've tried are not certified by Apple. Could it be the uncertified cables are is it a bad batterie? I don't want to buy an overpriced apple cable to find out it's the iPods fault. I have cleaned out the port in my iPod and all the connection that could be faulty, unfortunately I do not have another IOS device that supports Thunderbolt so I can't tell if it's the cables fault. I will probably ask to borrow someones fifth generation device although I am almost 100% certain that it is not the cables fault.

    What do you mean by:
    - "multiple adapters that are certified by Apple"? Do yo mean wall charger?
    - "USB to Thunderbolt cables"? A Lightning cable plugs into the iPod
Yes, a bad USB to Lightning cable can result in no charging. Also, some non-Apple cables do not work.

  • When duplicating a field, even when the original field is locked, the duplicated fields appear at different positions on pages that are the same size. How do I make them uniform?

I'm trying to put a hidden time stamp field on the bottom of all pages of a thousand page document, yet when I duplicate the field, the reproduced fields appear at different positions on different pages. Is there a way to make them all appear uniformly on each page. I've tried using the Lock function in the Properties menu before duplicating but to no avail. Please help.

I go to Tools>Forms> Edit...Do you want to detect...No. Add New Field>Text Field. I lay out my field at the bottom of the page, adjust the Properties (Hidden but printable, read only, font, alignment), Lock the Properties. Then I right-click and hit Duplicate.

  • Print VI Documentation always generates extra pages that are blank/empty.

I am using the Print ->VI Documentation to generate a document that contains my block diagram.  However, I notice in the preview (and in the final printout) that there are always extra pages at the end.  My block diagram takes up about 40 to 50 pages, and there are always anywhere from 10 to 40 extra blank pages generated.
My guess is that the blank pages are being generated because my block diagram has a width to height ratio that does not correspond to the width to height ratio of a letter sized page.  Is this the reason?  Is there any way around this other than to reorganize my block diagram to have a ratio of 8.5/11?

The only 3 options that I have selected are Block Diagram, Hidden Frames & Front Panel.  My block diagram uses a state machine and has about 50 different states (cases).  About half of these show up in the print.  The remaining don't show up even though the number of pages in my print preview seems to be right.

  • Safari (and Camino) crash on pages that are Flash-heavy

    Hi there,
Recently, both Safari and Camino have crashed when they've gone to pages with Flash intensive pages. Some times it crashes right away (15-30 seconds), other times it can crash after about 25-30 minutes, but it always crashes.
I have made sure everything has been updated (Flash 9,0,20,0), I have repaired disk permissions (off the start-up disk) and cleared caches, but to no avail.
I have listed the latest Safari crash report. Since it is also happening in Camino, I am reasonably sure there is some sort of conflict between Flash and my MacBook.
Please feel free to respond as I will answer any additional question you may have to help me solve this problem. Thank you.

Well, I decided to go to the main page (www.xgenstudios.com). It tuns out that the front page doesn't show up at all, even when all of the boxes checked off. (I checked on Camino and the front page showed up). The ads show up, but nothing else.
This is seems Normal, all items that make up the web page in Safari are deselected.
•Macromedia seems to be the problem not Java nor Javascript.
With only the Plugins Disabled in the Security tab in Safari preferences leaving the Java checked, go to the page, does it crash Safari.?
    • For comparison the web page does not crash either of my Safari versions 1.3.2 or 2.0.4 on the two ppc or the intel http://www.xgenstudios.com/play/motherload/
BTW - If I uncheck the Java Script box, the page doesn't show up.
That is also normal it is coded using javascript language ( & java) it has 20 odd errors, nothing to write home about, not a problem, same will happen to many website including this one. Motherload Validation report if the box are all deselected

    You say,
9,0,20,0 (I even deleted it and reinstalled it...still crashes).
I see that your crash tells this is the version you are running.
    com.macromedia.Flash Player.plugin 9.0.0 (1.0.4f20)
    • You need to to USE the uninstaller, is that what you did?
    • Was that before or after you FIRST posted or after.
    • Did you follow these exact steps from, a must to follow them exactly.
Steps for troubleshooting quoted from MacromediaFlash Player Tech Note
"If you have trouble with installation of Flash Player 9 for Intel-based Macs, then follow these troubleshooting steps. If one step does not correct the problem, then move onto the next step. For optimal troubleshooting, after each step, restart your machine, and Test Adobe Flash Player before moving onto the next step.
    1) Verify the installed version of Flash Player
    • If the installed version is 9.0.20.0, then you have the Flash Player 9 final release installed.
    • If the installed version is 8.0.17.0, or 8.0.27.0, then you have the Flash Player 8 preview release installed. Download and install the final release version of Flash Player 9 available here.
    • If the installed version is 8.0.22.0, or 8.0.24.0, and you are not running Safari in Rosetta mode, then you have the PowerPC version of Flash Player 8 installed. You can only run this version in Rosetta mode. You can follow the steps below to run Flash Player 8 in Rosetta, or download and install the final release version of Flash Player 9 available here.
    2) Reinstall
Many issues are related to a problem with a previous installation of Flash Player or to browser configuration.
To reinstall Flash Player, first run the Flash Player Uninstaller. Then download and run the Flash Player 9 installer available here..............more here where this is quoted from. Flash Player TechNote
    • Before Uninstalling & reinstalling the Flash Player.
    • Try disconnecting All Third party peripherals from your computer USB items Printers, mp3 players & mouse and keyboard only try Safari
Connecting them back, ONE at a time, trying Safari as you go, see is it crashes.
Good luck! please keep us posted.

  • How do I stop Firefox entering my username and password into other fields on pages that are not the log-in page?

On a website I need for my work, I must log-in with username & password. Firefox remembers my name & password perfectly. However, in another section on that same website, when I am filling in calendar information, it enters my my username in the "Location" field. Unfortunately, that is my work ID which is confidential. When I don't notice, it posts it on the very public calendar. Also, it enters my password into a password field (masked), so that no one can rsvp.
It doesn't appear that I can edit the Saved Passwords/Exception in Firefox Options, so I am looking for suggestions!
I want the saved name password at http://workname.com
    but not incorrectly at http://workname.com/info/*.*

If there is a password field on a web page and you have saved a password then Firefox may try to fill that password and enter the name in the field just above that password field.
    You can look at:
    * Saved Password Editor: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/60265
    *Form History Control: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/12021
You may want to disable saved form fill to prevent Firefox from filling the name.

  • Pages that are online are not showing in iweb

i want to edit some of the pags i created in iweb which are now on the web. the problem is that the pages do not show up when i open iweb...only my welcome page. is there a way to get the pages from my idisk into iweb so i can edit and add to them? thanks....gail

Mount your iDisk (Finder Go menu).
Open Web/Sites/iWeb and double click the index.html file to view your older pages.
Copy the URL and you can link it to new iWeb pages.
If the files pages can't be found when you open iWeb then you must have done something to your User/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites file as that is where your "local" copies exist.

  • I've deleted app off my iPod and now I have pages that are only half full i was wondering how to fix it by moving apps to other pages? Any answers please help

Any answers will do please help

Tap one of the apps and hold your finger over it until you start to see all of your apps wiggle.  You can then tap and drag them to any where you want.  To drag it to another page either drag it to the far right or left depending on which direction you want to go.  When you are done with the Home button.
