Panasonic SDR-H40P and FCP HD

Hello,
I am upgrading my analog S-VHS setup to digital with a Panasonic SDR-H40P and am experiencing difficulties with the import and aspect ratio. I have calculated the pixel dimensions of the native video from the camera as 834 x480. I am not familiar with these dimensions? (640x480, 720x486 are familiar to me) Which preset should I edit to accommodate this camera or is there an existing codec and preset I can use native?
Norman

The camera records in an mpeg 2 format that must be converted to an editable format.
You may need to use mpeg streamclip to convert it.
If the camera records Standard Definition video, convert the mpeg2 files to DV/NTSC (720x480).

Will my new Panasonic camcorder work with iMovie HD 6? I can't get it to import the video files, only still pictures. I'm using the USB connection, and it imported only the last video. It won't read the others.

I just got a Panasonic SDR-H40P for Xmas yesterday and tried to import video file into iMove 7.1.4. At first I had a problem thinking it was the exe. file that it created. Now that I think about it, they were the files that format the drive. Then after shooting some additional footage I saw the video files recognized by iMovie then it would crash. After reading a post about "Perian" users I uninstalled it from my Macbook Pro and kept trying to import. That seemed to do the trick. So the moral of the story is; YES, it does work nice with iMovie 7.1.4. but don't have "Perian" app loaded. By the way I was an Final Cut Pro user scince the first version and never really gave iMovie a chance. I love this app for home movie stuff. If I do another pro project I will go back to FCP but for now I love the Panasonic/iMove combo.
    Have fun.

....how come my computer does not totally recognize my Panasonic SDR-S7 camcorder when I plug it in?

    ok...
    iMovie 4.0.1
changed MOD to MPG, clicked on it to play
    then it said:

  • Panasonic sdr-s26 and FCE4

    Hi!
I am a totally newbie and I bought FCE 4 to cut my movies from my sd-card-camcorder Panasonic sdr-s26. Unfortunately I can not import my movies to fce. The files on my sd-card are named ".mod" or ".moi". It seems that FCE can not handle those files.
Please help a totally newbie. Thanks

From your camcorder specs, I think you should be able to copy the MPEG2 movie files from your camera to your Mac hard disk, and then convert them into the standard FCE format using the free application MPEG Streamclip.
When the media file is on your Mac open it in MPEG Streamclip, then Export to QuickTime (cmd-E - NOT Export to DV!) with Compression: Apple DV-PAL (or Apple DV-DVCPRO/NTSC), Quality: 100%, fps: 25 for PAL or 29,97 for NTSC, Audio: uncompressed, Stereo, 48 KHz.
When imported to FCE, the resulting .mov will not require video nor audio rendering.

  • Panasonic SDR-H80 and Final Cut Express

Does anyone know whether the new Panasonic Camcorder Type SDR-H80 is compatible with an iMac running under the Leopard OS and Final Cut Express version 4.0.1?

Hey ,.. I just purchased the same videocam and I am having the same dilema? Did you figure something out on how to make itr work yet?

  • Let me rephrase question on Panasonic 1080 HD and fcp settings

I am having issues brining in these p2 cards so they look good.
My clent thinks this is shot on 1920 x 1080 but is not sure
When I import them using DVC pro hd 1080p30 they come out as 1280 x 1080 and all movements show interlace issues
Apple pro ress 422 has the same results
What should by capture setting and my sequence settings be for this?

Panasonic's DVCPRO HD codec, at 1080, is 1280x1080. It is a thin raster format, meaning ANAMORPHIC. Normal Anamorphic is 1440x1080, but DVCPRO HD goes just a BIT further and loses 200 more lines. When you use Log and Transfer to bring in the footage, it comes in as shot...you can't shoot 720 and bring it in as 1080...so if those are your numbers, it is 1080.
Interlacing. 1080 is an interlaced format. If the client shot 1080i 24p...then it is 24p in a 29.97 interlaced stream. But it looks progressive. If they shot 1080i 24pA...that means that it can have pulldown removed on ingest, to get to progressive 23.98. But, they need to have shot that. You can't really remove pulldown on normal 1080i 24p.

  • I have a camcorder that records in the .MOD format.  It is a Panasonic SDR-S26 and is not compatible with MAC.  I want to create a DVD using the video on my camcorder.  How can I do this?

My operating system is OS X (version 10.6.8) and I have a Mac Mini.

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
    CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

  • I have a panasonic SDR-H40P/Pc Camcorder.

I can import the video to imovie but the quality is not good. Is there a setting I am missing? Do I have another option?

What type of cable are you using to connect the camcorder to your Mac? Are you tring to import into iMovie or just drag and drop the movies to copy to your internal HD?

  • Importing video from Panasonic sdr-h85

Hey all! My husband just bought a family video camcorder..Panasonic SDR-H85. I have final cut pro
on my imac..how can I import the video from the camcorder into FCP? Do I need conversion software?

I believe you're reading a tone into Studio X's response that isn't really there.
The suggestion of the Creative Cow forum and the 2-pop forum actually will give you some great responses for consumer cameras and the CNET site has great reviews as well.
His suggestion to download the free software MPEG Streamclip is a grand suggestion which will allow you to transcode acquisition formats such as AVCHD and then use in FCP if you choose.
Studio X is a dynamic contributor to this forum and helps dozens of people on a daily basis.
Of course you are certainly right about one thing though,

  • New 13" MacBook Pro and FCP Express?

Is the new 13" MBP OK for light video editing with iMovie or FCP Express and little photo editing with Photoshop Elements?
For video I use Panasonic AG-HMC40 AVCCAM HD.
    Thanks!

    Graphics.
However, as I keep telling everyone, I have an almost prehistoric 2004 G4 eMac (1.25GHz 768MB RAM and 32MB VRAM) which ran and still does run, FCE 4 and FCP 6 perfectly well.
The only minor problem was that the new FxPlug effects did not work, but with 200 other effects there was still plenty to keep anyone happy.
Your setup will not have that problem and even though it isn't the latest iteration it should still be excellent for the job.

  • Last tiger and fcp: cannot export back to mini dv

we used to be able with old Mac Os and fcp to reexport to mini dv, wether on our jvc super vhs, or sony and panasoni cameras. we just are not able to do it now; anybody has a solution?

Check your firewire cable. shouldnt be any difference between printing to video on 4.5 or 5. Or perhaps its something else. I am honestly aware of many problems I and some others are having with Tiger / FCP 5, this is not one of them that I'm aware of.

  • Elements 7 - Best Preset to use for the Panasonic SDR-H40 Camcorder

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me what would be the best preset to use for video created on the Panasonic SDR-H40? I'm just learning about the software, opened a project, using whatever settings were already there, and the video's audio sometimes stops mid-stream, so it's basically a silent movie.
I read that I might need to use a specific preset or create one of my own, but don't know how to actually go about it.
The choices under NTSC presets are AVCHD, DV or HDV. I've looked in the Camcorders manual and can't find how (or even if) that equates to the recording modes of XP (high picture quality), SP (normal) or LP (recording time prioritized) -
The videos I recorded were recorded in XP - Taking a guess at it, I don't think there's a relationship between these terms and the recording modes of the Camcorder and suspect that this camera only does DV. But if that's true I don't know if there are further adjustments I need to make (by creating a preset).
I was hoping that someone with the same camera or just solid general knowledge could shed some light on this.
    Thanks!

The camcorder is a standard definintion camorder recording to a hard drive so you need to use the.... NTSC, "Hard disc, Flash Memory Camcorder", Standard 28KHz or Widescreen 48KHz dependant on whether you shot in widescreen.

  • Panasonic SDR-H21 HDD device --- error in setup

hi there - please help ---- I just bought Final Cut Express 4 -
    I use a Panasonic SDR-H21 HDD& SD Card
in my Final Cut setup I choose all-formats or DV/Panasonic DVCPRO ---- I choose PAL (we use PAL)
as soon as I switch on my Panasonic it opens IPHOTO - I quit IPHOTO (a couple of times because it just reopen again), but in my Final Cut setup window it gave me the following error message
    External A/V
unable to locate the following external devices
Apple Firewire Pal (720x480) (or (720x576) - I change to different PAL options)
I want to know if I can use my Panasonic - it's not on your Panasonic list ---- it works 100% in IMOVIE
I use SNOW LEOPARD - IMAC

I watch the online tutorial and I read in the FCE4 Product Overview that I can capture clips from a camcorder over a single Fire Wire or USB cable ----- so I'm sure it's not only from tape
there is a list of 5 Panasonic Camcorders that Apple tested on the Apple website as well ----
I shot my media on my Panasonic HDD -

Hi, thanks I found "log and transfer". I read on the internet that there is problem with my camera model in FCE. When I'm log and transfer I can choose btw formats like .MPl, .MTS and CPI - none of these work to import.
Maybe I'm stupid but I don't succeed to import either in iMove or FCE. More tips please?
