Panther FileVault question...

Hi everyone!
Ok here's my question...this is a basic command:
tell application "Finder"
get name of every item of folder "Application Support" of folder "Library" of Home
end tell
But this doesn't work in a FileVault Home folder in Panther. It does work in a FileVault Home folder in Tiger. Other variations of this command do work in a FileVault Home folder in Panther:
tell application "Finder"
get name of every item of Home
end tell
So I think it just depends on where you want to get the info? Does anyone have a work around for this? There must be a way to retrieve this info?
Thanks in advance!
Reg

Hi again Niel!
First the simple issue...What you suggested worked fine but when I plugged it into my AppleScript Studio script it (maybe together with other lines of script?) caused Panther (FileVault) to crash. My script was in "tell Finder" blocks which I had to place end tell or tell me to make this work, that's when it crashed. Anyways I removed "alias" from the 2nd line and was able to leave it in my Finder tell block and it worked fine. So now I can say I worked on it too!
But I noticed I will have additional problems because in my script I take that list of filenames (which now works great!) and I do a repeat block with that list looking for a name that meets certain criteria. If I find a name this is what I do:
tell application "Finder"
set the_file to (every item of folder "application support" of folder "library" of home whose name is i) as alias
set the_container to container of (every item of folder "application support" of folder "library" of home whose name is i) as alias
end tell
There might be more instances where I look through this folder with the Finder and it won't let me no matter how I word it. Do you have maybe a guideline I can follow? Does it make sense what I'm explaining? So basically from a list of names if I find a file I'm looking for I use the Finder to get additional info such as the full path and the container and maybe others too...
Thanks for all your help Niel!

  • Filevault questions

    hi all
I've just had my G5 stolen and I'm looking into better security. I passworded my account on the G5 and I hope that none of the information is accesable.
I have my PB now and would like to take all nessesary precautions to ensure that it is secure.
Would enabling filevault slow down my PB?
    Are there any real pitfalls?
    Would you reccomend it?
    Thanks
    -Gambit

I have FileVault enabled on my PowerBook without any noticeable slowdown - I really don't notice it's on. The only time you'll know about it is when logging out of your account (e.g. to shutdown); FileVault will ask if it's OK to reclaim some space (it grows slightly as you use it but doesn't shrink again until you agree to the reclaim space question) - this (very smooth) process takes up to a minute or so on my PB.
As Magnus says, large media files are better off being stored outside of the FileVault-enabled Home area, e.g. GarageBand tracks which tend to be pretty large and require a lot of disc access when in use are stored in the /Users/Shared/Music/ folder instead of ~/Music. But anything I would particularly be concerned about if my PB was stolen is protected within the FileVault.
No issue turning off FileVault here either - I tried it just the other day while checking another issue I was having (a .Mac sync problem which was not FileVault-related; I was just clutching at straws).
Worth noting that enabling (& disabling) FileVault can take quite a while (I've seen 20-60 mins, depending on how much data there is currently the Home folder). But once it's enabled there really shouldn't be any need for you to disable it again.
    Hope this helps?

  • Panther applescript question...

    Hi everyone!
I know Panther is a bit old now...but hopefully someone can explain why this doesn't work:
    tell application "Finder"
set theLocation to ((path to home folder as string) & "Desktop:testfile")
set theFile to (open for access file theLocation with write permission)
set theContent to read file (theLocation as string)
    display dialog theContent
    -- result is "9"
    if theContent is "9" then
    display dialog "OK"
    end if
    close access theFile
    end tell
In this script it doesn't recognize that the value is the same (9) and never displays the "OK" dialog. However if I make a simple script like this it's no problem:
    set theTest to "9"
    if theTest is "9" then
    display dialog "OK"
    end if
Can someone please explain this? Thank you very much in advance...
    Reg

Hi and thanks for the reply!
The test file is made from Script Editor...no external editors were used. It makes sense what you say...I was also thinking something like this but I couldn't figure it out. Yes in Leopard it's no problem as you said. Also, I think I made a mistake when I put (theLocation as string) it should just be theLocation. I was also trying to read as string and as number and no matter what I did it never read properly. I can make some more tests using your suggestions...just one thing...if I create the file using Script Editor how can I write it in such a way that it can be read. Can I write as Unicode text and read as Unicode text so it will come out the right way?
    Thanks again so much,
    Reg
    Note:
Here is a more accurate post of the script...
    tell application "Finder"
set theLocation to ((path to home folder as string) & "Desktop:testfile")
set theFile to (open for access file theLocation with write permission)
    set eof theFile to 0
write "9" to theFile starting at eof
set theContent to read file theLocation
    display dialog theContent
    -- result is "9"
    if theContent is "9" then
    display dialog "OK"
    end if
    close access theFile
    end tell

  • Filevault question

    Hi,
I have started to see what FileVault can do as far as encryping your files go. I decided to give it a try, and I set a master password for it and hit "Turn on FileVault". Soon, I get a message saying I need 4073.7 GB to use it! That's nearly 4 Terabytes! Not even the Mac Pro's have that much storage, and I have an eMac! That's rediculous! Am i doing something wrong? Please help!
    Thanks,
    Dustin

not sure what your expectations were as far as "see what it can do" - filevault merely encrypts all of the files of your homedir into one bigfile, known as "sparseimage". so your eventual Filevault file will typically get named "userid.sparseimage"....
yes, you'll need alot of extra space to store the sparseimage file, however, the number youve stated here sounds off, you might double check, you sure it wasnt 4.073.7 Mb ?
In any case, I wouldnt recommend Filevault unless:
    a. you are willing/able/ready to do frequent backups
    b. you are willing to get 'disabled' in the middle of your business day right before an important meeting (cause Murphy's Law states that this is when something bad will happen, ie, filevault corruption)
    c. you can live with the additional space requirements dictated by having yet another large file on the that computer....
In a nutshell, Filevault is only for those who really need it, as the costs are stiff...

  • Can I install Panther & OS 9.2.1 on a Firewire partition?

From reading other posts, it seems that Panther/Classic can be installed on a partitioned Firewire drive. Not quite sure how do do that as other posts were about different issues.
    Info
There's a G3 beige tower that there is no space for, but I'd like to run some of its apps, files and games on a Firewire drive on the iMac. There are backups for all the G3 data on CDs, and on 135MB removable drives. There were 2 HDs in the G3. The HD running 9.2.1 died; the other is running OS 7.1. The machine boots from the 9.2.1 CD, but not from Panther.
    Questions:
    1. One can never have too much backup, so will partitioning the Firewire drive leave enough free space after Panther and Classic are installed? *see # 2
    2. I assume it's better to use Panther rather than Tiger, as it's a smaller OS. The Firewire drive has 65GB capacity, with 44GB used for a Leopard 10.5.8 backup. About 20GB is available. And best to leave at least 10-20% of that space free.
    3. Would an 8GB flash memory stick work to backup Panther and 9.2.1, as well as apps, files, etc.? Nothing is large on the G3--would not need about 70% of the software that was originally installed on it (printer, scanner, browsers, modem, etc.)
    Is this a workable idea?
    Thanks!
    G

Hi G, The floods are in the north and I live in the south so everything is good here, but it seems half the world is either flooded or snowbound.
The La Nina effect in the Pacific is one explanation for the Australian deluge. Whether the extensive snow in the northern hemisphere is related, I'd be guessing.
As to your ambition, maybe find someone with a working Panther OS and clone it to an external with SuperDuper, and see if that works for you. As I've said, I have my doubts and think preserving your old hardware is perhaps the most straightforward thing to do.
If your old G3 is taking up space, maybe acquire an old laptop just for the purpose.
Every so often I fire up my iBook, so as to run an old app under Classic.

  • DVD pixelation since 10.4.5 update

I think this has started since I did my last update, but DVD playback seems to be quite pixelated. Has anybody else noticed this? Or is it just me?
It no longer smooths the pixels in fullscreen mode, it merely resizes them. The result is quite blocky and disappointing.

Gary, I'm on 10.4.5, Safari 2.0.3 and Comcast Cable.
Everything works like lightening, and has since early Panther.
Question: Do you have ANY third party "Internet Enhancing" apps are like SpeedDownload, iGetter, PithHelmet, Acid Search, Safari Enhancer, etc.? They may need updating. Also tell us if you have any Norton apps or Virex.
    Here's what worked for me:
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Trash your Icons Folder:
    HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)
    3. You might want to check all three "auto" preferences in Safari. Sometimes those lists gets very long and need pruning. (I turned all autofill boxes off, and have no problems.)
    4. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this (one at a time) for each font with a bullet next to it.
If you're still having problems, do this:
    5. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer. As Francine said, sometimes the modem and/or router needs a rest.
    Hope this helps

  • Power book G4 and how stupid I am

I was told when I purchased my G4 , that the key pad lit up , and it doesn't ,any way when I purchased it it had tiger installed , , after about two months my camera was on the fritz so I was using my isight camera with the G4 , unfortunately, I also tried to use the magnetic stand that came with the camera ,and, put it next to the touch Pad , Oh I can hear all the apple poohbahhs giggling already , any way I had to replace the hard drive , and when I got it back it only had Panther , My question is , how much do I have to back up before I reinstall from my ,C.ds that came with ,the computer?
My G5 has tiger , and I guess i like it , and its hard to upgrade programs with out it , i read with frequency here all the problems that can occur , when switching , in adition I have iLife5 ,which I installed with tiger on the G5. as tiger didnt upgrade my iPhoto , and heres one more my G5 came with an installer for iPhoto 5 and up , but when I go to install it , it responds with , you cant you dont have iPhoto5 or higher ,
Whats a gay, creative, consuming ,confused aproaching geek status boy to do ?

Hi, jkevin. Your question is well buried under all the fluff and flourishes, but it sounds as though you may want to erase your new hard drive and install Tiger on it. Is that true? If so, you will first need to back up any files you have on the drive now that can't be reinstalled from original software disks. Generally, that means any files you have created yourself, containing your own data.
If there were other questions in your post, please try to ask them clearly and straightforwardly.

  • Question regarding filevault and a honeypot account

I am running osx lion.  I would like to secure my machine, and that includes basics like good passwords and turning on a firmware password.  But I would also like to encrypt the contents of the hard drive.  Filevault to the rescue it would seem.
But I also have one more requirement.
Since a lot of my equipment was stolen last year I have installed prey on all of my new computers (www.preyproject.com).  This allows me to track my machines and potentially get them recovered should they go missing.  Prey is useless unless there is a user logged in and so I have created a honeypot account that is minimally protected (i.e. the password is the user name and the password hint explicitly tells you what the password is).  This account has parental controls on it to limit the applications that can be run (only web browser, some games, and skype).  The idea is that a dumb thief steals my computer, finds it easy to log into the honeypot account, and then uses that with their facebook or whatever because getting past the open firmware settings and the individual "real" account passwords is too hard.
That said, having this software is no guarantee that I will be able to recover my machine, so I want my data encrypted.
    Here is my question:
Does the fact that I have to add this simple password for the honeypot account to use the computer (aka open a filevault drive) invalidate my filevault protection?  I.e. will this simple password allow them to unencrypt the entire drive, even though I have other accounts with stronger passwords?

The guest account might be just good enough...  I'll give it a try.  Thanks.  Prey seems to work pretty well for me but it has also been touchy in the past.  I will have to check it carefully with the guest account to ensure it has the permissions needed to use the webcam and send email and such.
I'm still interested in knowing how filevault encryption works.  Does it allow any of the passwords to unencrypt the whole drive, or does it require a unique password per account to unencrypt the data in that account?
Edit:  Just saw the repy by Linc Davis
"If everything worked perfectly, the account would only have access to the files in its home folder. But is there an unknown exploit that enables a local user to gain elevated privileges? Such exploits have been found in the past, and may be found in the future."
That clears it up for me a bit.  And it makes sense.  I will see if I can make do with the guest account.
That said, I actually value the computer hardware - though not as much as the data.  I already back the data up which is the first step.  Preventing others from accessing it is my next priority, but there is nothing that is THAT critical.  I can change all my passwords quickly (and I don't use anything like 1password).  I have tax returns on the drive, but they are also password protected.
My primary goal is to keep the average and even slightly above average user from getting to my data (including yanking the drive and putting it into another machine or booting from a CD).  As I said, I hope the guest account will be adequate for my honeypot needs.
    Also @Linc,
I accidentally clicked on "Helpful" instead of "Answered" on your post.  Post a reply and I will do it right this time.  Thanks.

  • Filevault encryption: no security questions, no recovery code; how to revert?

Running the latest Yosemite (10.10.2) on an iMac (upgraded from Mavericks) ...
I decided I wanted to encrypt the boot drive on our iMac, so I clicked to turn on Filevault. Here's what happened:
I was NOT offered a recovery key. (As this point, I didn't know when the key is normally offered.)
I DID get a window that asked if I wanted Apple to save my key, and I clicked on the radio button to do so. Then I clicked on CONTINUE.
I did NOT get any security questions to answer, just a RESTART button. I thought, maybe the security questions come after the restart.
I clicked on RESTART and the iMac restarted and encrypted the drive (17 hours).
Concerned that I didn't have a recovery key, I read up on the forums. Sounded like if I simply used my user password, I could turn off Filevault to decrypt the drive, and I'd be back to where I started. I did so, and watched as it decrypted the drive (6 hours). Filevault indicates that is is "now off."
I thought I'd try again, so I clicked to turn on Filevault. This time, I did NOT get a recovery key (same as before) and I did NOT get the window asking if I wanted Apple to save my key — only an immediate RESTART button. I canceled.
I restarted the iMac, noting that the startup graphics were different — the iMac now starts immediately with an all-white screen, something that one forum participant said is evidence that your boot drive IS encrypted regardless of what Filevault says.
This concerned me because it now seemed like the drive might be encrypted and I had no recovery key and hadn't been asked any security questions.
I thought if I turned on Filevault I could generate a fresh recovery key that would supplant anything Apple was storing for me — and give me a chance to answer security questions.
I turned on Filevault and was, for the third time, NOT offered a recovery key but this time I DID get the window that asked if I wanted Apple to save my key. Apparently the restart at least added this screen. I cancelled.
So while Filevault says it is off, the immediate white start-up screen suggests the drive may be encrypted. Regardless, Filevault is not offering a recovery key or security questions.
I have sketchy ideas about how to rectify things:
I could start up from an external backup (unencrypted) of the boot drive, erase the boot drive, and clone the backup to the boot drive. Will that create a bootable (non-encrypted) startup drive? I don't think so ...
I could start up from the external backup (unencrypted) of the boot drive, erase the boot drive, then do a clean install of Yosemite on the boot drive. Would that clear any existing encryption? I don't know ...
Or I read about using Terminal to un-encrypt a drive?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bradley

  • Effectiveness of FileVault in OS X Panther 10.3.9

I recently had my iBook G4 stolen that had some very sensitive data on the hard drive. Fortunately, I had filevault activated on the home folder, in which the data was stored. I deleted that data shortly before it was taken, but I need to know one thing.
Can this data in the home folder be located and restored even though it was encrypted through FileVault? This is extremely worrysome for me.
I read in some Security sites of the problems with FileVault in OS X Panther not securely deleting files but doing so in OS X Tiger. Was this fixed in OS X Panther 10.3.9?

    Hi deuce1981,
Your data will more than likely be "lost forever". Especially if you kept up on your security updates and had at least a 13 bit PW of utter nonsense.
I suggest you report your computer as being stolen to Apple and here's a helpful site link : http://www.freemacblog.com/how-to-prepare-for-a-stolen-mac/
    Hope this helps,

  • Upgrading Question: From  Panther to Leopard... PhotoShop 7.0 to CS3?

I just upgraded from Panther to Leopard and need to upgrade my PhotoShop 7.0 to CS3. What do I need to do to insure the upgrade is successful? And... what do I need to pull from my OS 9 before I delete it?

*"What do I need to do to insure the upgrade is successful? "*
You shouldn't have to do anything...just install CS3.
Regardless, since Photoshop is not an Apple product, you should post your questions on Adobe's discussion forums, rather than an Apple forum that focuses on the isntallation of OS X:

  • Upgrade to Tiger from Panther questions

I checked some of the old (2007) questions that are similar to mine, but they don't exactly address my questions, because of the upgrade separation of the systems in question. So I'm entering a new question that might hopefully save me some trouble.
I haven't been using my Powerbook G4 very much, lately, but I do use it occasionally for light video editing and more especially for slideshows. I like making slideshows on iMovie beter than other application I have on my other computers.
I keep reading the upgrade methodology... supposedly using the Snowleopard boxed set. The hype makes it sound as if it's capable of upgrading an Inel or PPC equipped Mac. That just sounds too good to be true, so here I am to ask for some experience based advice to make this potential change a little easier. Which disks should I purchase to make this upgrade as easy as possible?
Should I upgrade my RAM? Would an upgrade to more than the existing 512 meg be advised, or is it pretty mandatory? I am always fighting byte-bulge, as it is, so would an upgrade to a HDD larger than the existing 80 gigs be worth the extra money? Any particular size/brand to consider more than others?
My present complaint is an inability to do anything at all with the iTunes store, as most of you probably know. This wasn't so bad prior to adding Win7 machines to my network... but they seem to have completely shut out the Mac... and a Win XP machine, to boot. It's just a hassle to swap fairly large files with thumb drives.
Any upgrade advice and methods for upgrading from Panther to Tiger would be much appreciated.

Sorry, no G4 or any PPC Mac is going to be able to use Snow Leopard/10.6.x
10.5.8 is the most your G4 can use, & yes, max out the RAM.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.
There are workarounds if the 867MHz is the only hangup...
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/leopardassist/
BTW, 10.3.x is Panther, 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard & not PPC compatible.

  • Question about updating from panther to tiger

I'm getting ready to update my system from panther to tiger. I'm going to use archive and install to do it. My question is will have to reload logic pro 7.1.1 after I do this?
    Thanks,

prokeds, if you want your mail as it was do this:
On your backup navigate to your ~(yourhome)/library/mail (copy the whole folder) and replace the corresponding folder on your new system. (First drag your existing Mail folder to the desktop until you're sure you don't need it.)
Do the same with ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist * This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
When you relaunch Mail decline any prompts to "import".
EDIT: I didn't even realize these were the instructions I already gave to the OP. They should work for you, post back if they don't or if your issue is different.

  • Upgrade from Panther - pre-upgrade questions

Hello all! I want to upgrade my iBook OS 10.3.9 to either Tiger or Leopard (I have install disks for both) and have a few questions.
1-I have read of many install problems with Leopard, should I upgrade to Tiger instead for ease?
2-besides backing up my files like photos and music, etc, what else do I back up? I have a 500GB external hard drive so I have plenty of space. Do I make a new image of my disc? I read somewhere about making a "bootable" backup - and that would be what exactly?
3-I also read something about running Disk Utility before the upgrade - why and what am I running in Disk Utility?
Thank you all for any questions you can answer!

But you have not read many of the successful installs with zero problems, have you? They are not here for obvious reasons.
I recommend Leopard. I have never had any problems on any of my three machines.
What you read here is like reading the casebook at the local hospital emergency room - but we don't think from that that everyone there is typical, do we?

The best backup is the bootable clone. Both CCC and SuperDuper! provide this. Check to see if they support Panther.

3-I also read something about running Disk Utility before the upgrade - why and what am I running in Disk Utility?
I am no longer very familiar with Panther, but in diskutility there are two functions - repair permissions and repair hard drive. They are more important in Leopard than previous OSs. If there are there, run them before upgrading.
    After upgrading, run them again.

  • Ex-panther user's question

I used to use panther; however, somehow my computer was having a problem, so I had to used "startup disk" to install juguar again.
I got my iBook G4 from my sister and it was installed Panther. I found my friend who had iBook G4 so I could get Panther!
First, where is the "hotspot" or juguar doesn't have it?
Second, where is the "dashboard" and "clock"?
Last, where can I get the "Toaster"?
    Thank you!

    mac-lover-88,
If there is any data on the present iBook system, that you wish to keep, make a backup of it.
Get the original system install discs, from your sister, or purchase a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs.
Do an Erase & Install, using either the Orignal discs from your sister, or the purchased Full Retail Version.
Panther 10.3.x and Tiger 10.4.x are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, to be released on 10/26/07, will be the most up to date OS.
    Leopard System Requirements
But, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

If Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider, purchasing and installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.10 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Review these Apple documents for Panther System Requirements, and Additional Panther System Requirements.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.
