What happened to the paper tape "Recalculate Totals" in the leopard mac calculator?
How else can I track and calculate long and tedious numbers on my mac?
I have no idea. Never saw that option and I can't find anything in the Help files. Also, I strongly suggest updating to 10.5.3.

I want to upgrade my 2007 Mac desktop to 10.5 Leopard. I am currently running on 10.4.11. When I put the leopard disk into the drive all it does is make a weird noise and then spits the disk right back out. It doesn't do this with any other discs, only this software. Is it still possible to update this computer?

Before you do upgrade to Snow Leopard, make sure your Mac meets the requirements.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard - Technical Specifications
Make sure the disc you tried using doesn't have any fingerprints or smudges on it. The optical drive can't read the disk otherwise.
If your Mac won't read the disc, might be a good idea to rule out any problems with the startup disk BEFORE trying to upgrade the system.

Can the new Mac Mini boot Snow Leopard from an external hard drive?
I currently boot my 2009 Mac Mini from a FW800 external drive with 10.6.8. If I just plug my external drive into a new 2011 Mac Mini, will it boot into Snow Leopard if I set it as the startup disk or will I get a kernel panic?
I bought a 2011 Mac Mini, which came with Lion installed. I thought maybe I could repartition it and have a Snow Leopard partition. So I repartitioned it (500gb split into two 250gb partitions). I named the new partition "SnowLeopard" just to make it easy for me to tell the difference.
I attached the external DVD and put in a Snow Leopard installer disc, holding down the C key so it would boot and install from that, but it just spun for awhile. Doesn't appear to work.
Then I read somewhere else that someone had managed to clone a copy of Snow Leopard onto an external drive and boot from that. In their situation they were talking about a MacBook, but the principle seemed sane.
So I rebooted, holding down the T key to put the Mac Mini into Target hard disk mode, and attached it via Firewire to another MacMini (circa 2008 or so, not sure of year, but it was upgraded last year to Snow Leopard and has been upgraded along and along). Then I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Snow Leopard (that is, the entire hard disk-- System and all applications and data) to my newer Mac Mini's "snow leopard" partition.
For yucks, when it was done cloning, I restarted the older Mac Mini, and had it boot from the newer Mac Mini's snow leopard partition--- it worked! To make it easy to tell the difference, I changed the desktop background to something completely different. I think I tried booting from Lion but I can't remember if that worked.
Then I rebooted the newer Mac Mini, which booted up in Lion, of course. Going into System Settings, I changed the startup disk to the "snow leopard" partition, and rebooted, and it booted up in Snow Leopard.
I have yet to test the applications on the Snow Leopard partition. Another problem has arisen.
Because with both of the Mac MInis being active on the network, they both had the same computer and user name. So I renamed the newer Mac Mini to something completely different, and changed the password.
Unfortunately, now I cannot change any other setting in the System Settings that requires a password. While the newer Snow Leopard lets me log in with the new user and new password, whenever I try to click the "lock" icon to change something, I'm prompted for a username and password. Apparently this is some different username and password than either the new or old username/password.
I've tried various combinations of both: new user/old password, old user/new password, old user/old password, etc.
So if you do what I've done, be careful about changing the username and password on your cloned computer. I think it may be wiser to create a new user and then delete the old cloned users. I may just have to re-clone the old Mac Mini to the new one again.
If anyone has any ideas about this password conundrum, please pass along! -
I have 3 macs. 2 are Lion, but 1 I left Snow leopard so I can access data from my old Quicken Application that doesn't work with Lion. If I move to iCloud, will I no longer be able to access my MobileMe email on the Snow Leopard mac?
What version of word do you have? The TS3938 sounds like it's a PowerPC app- written for an old architecture that is no longer supported in Lion. If this is the case, your files are fine- you just need a newer version of word that will run in Lion in order to open them. The newest version (2011) should be readily available anywhere, and has worked fine for me ever since I switched to Lion on release day....

Will the 2012 Mac Pro boot from Snow Leopard?
I'm contemplating upgrading my 2008, 8 core intel mac and getting a refurbished 2012 12 core 2.4 ghz mac pro. My plan, regardless of what future mac I purchased, was to keep my old maching ONLY becuase there are times I need to access my old Retrospect backups. Retrospect only works in OS 10.6.8, that is, the version of Retrospect that allows me to access my crusty old backups ;-). These backups are old client projects and can generate me $ from time to time. Anyway, I was toying with the idea of getting a newer mac, and, in the event it would actually boot from this old hard drive with 10.6.7, I would then sell the old mac. Does anyone have the answer to this?
No. It can only boot from the OS X version it comes with. The 2012 MP requires a version of Lion. Snow Leopard does run on the 2010 model.

Using the Leopard disc provided with a new Mac with other Macs

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Macbook Pro that included the Leopard disc, which hadn't been installed on the machine. I went away last weekend and when I returned, my house had been burglarized and my brand new Macbook Pro was gone. I would like to get another Macbook Pro to replace it, but I can't afford to pay full retail once again so I am looking into getting a used one. Anyway, I'm wondering if I were to buy one that didn't included Leopard, would I be able to install it from the disc that came with my old Mac?

FWIW - the license restricts you to using the software only on an Apple-branded computer, and only one computer per licensed copy of the software. The license does not require you to use the OS on the same computer that you purchased (I'd encourage you to read the license when you attempt to install to verify my statements -- the license is presented and you have to agree to it before the installation goes forward).
I only have the Tiger license in front of me right now, but it has all sorts of interesting tidbits in it. Technically speaking, using iChat in a commercial setting is prohibited, as is MPEG2 encoding, modifying files in a .app folder, encoding MPEG4 and H.264 is restricted to personal and noncommercial uses, using the AMR codec with a mobile device is prohibited, as is divulging flight information you obtain through the Flight Tracked widget to a third party.
As far as licenses go, it's pretty friendly. Microsoft, for example, has had licenses that prohibit benchmarking or testing their software, or using MS Word to write disparaging comments about their company; MS even had a warning at one time against using their operating systems in critical applications such as life-support, medical and weapons systems. Microsoft still requires its licensees to submit to license compliance audits on demand. -
I tried to download the new Lion software, but was blocked. Apparently I don't have the Leopard version on my Mac. I have attempted to download THAT version but it doesn't appear to be available as a download. Is that correct?

FreeHand MX on the new Mac Pro under Snow Leopard?
Just wondering if anybody is managing to successfully run Adobe (Macromedia) FreeHand on the new Mac Pro under Snow Leopard?
We often need to access a lot of archived FreeHand files and are wondering whether we should keep an old G4 tucked away just for this job when we next update our Macs.

A quick Google search produced a number of sites such as this one that basically say that freehand doesn't do so well on Snow Leopard. You suggestion for maintaining an old G4 sounds like a good one to me.

I applied the update today to an Iphone 5 and it totally trashed the phone. Total restore WOULD NOT bring it back- it is a nice paper weight- Error 6. Any body got a clue? Have tried restore several times- yes- disconnected all usb devices THX

Import of library
You don't import one library into another. Simply copy the library from the older Mac to the Pictures folder on iMac. If you already have a library on the iMac rename it first.
Next launch iPhoto on the new iMac with the Option key held down and select the newly copied library.
If you have photos in the original library on the iMac you can merge that library into the larger, copied library with the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. Or if you also have Aperture 3.3 you can use it to merge the two libraries. -
Trying to solve a mysterious issue with the calculator application.
When I was using Tiger the paper tape in calculator allowed me to highlight either a particular total
if I miscalculated and type in the correct amount, then gave me the option to "recalculate" that total
so I wouldn't have to retype the entire batch of numbers again.
Now in Leopard this function (re-calculate) doesn't seem to be there, and I've had to retype all my
numbers if I did an error!! This has been frustrating as I'm in the midst of doing my taxes and with
MANY numbers to total, any error has slowed me down as I have to re type these totals.
IS there a function I'm not aware of?
When I called Apple they said this calculator is the same version they've had for the past few years.
It was suggested to trash the calculator plist, which I tried but no luck as I had thought.

On my calculator this button is also missing, so either it is a bug on Apple's part or they took it out for some unknown reason.
