Partitioning support in TimesTen

Does Oracle TimesTen support partitioning?
If so, how can I add any partitioned table in TimesTen cache group?
and does it make any performance improvement in Oracle TimesTen as well??

A partitioned table in Oracle is a single logical table with its data spread across several physical partitions based on some partitioning scheme. The partitioning is invisible to regular SQL access (i.e. when you insert, update, delete or query the table your SQL does not need to know anything about the underlying partitioning. The TimesTen caching mechanism uses regular SQL for its synchronisation operations so the partitoning is invisible to us also. The partitioned table is cached as a single table in TimesTen (subject to any WHERE clause used in the cache group definition or LOAD statement). Any inserts will be inserted into the cached table in TimesTen. When they are propagated to Oracle they will be inserted there using a regular SQL INSERT statement and the partitioning layer in Oracle will make sure they go into the correct partition.

  • APEX supports the TimesTen Database development?

    Hi all,
Oracle Application Express supports the TimesTen In-Memory Database development?
    Thanks,
    Jett

    Hi Jett,
you probably wanted to post this question in {forum:id=137} or even {forum:id=244}, right?
Anyway, I don't think APEX supports TimesTen, as TimesTen doesn't have all required features and is (hence) not listed in the supported database versions of the [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23903_01/doc/doc.41/e21673/pre_require.htm#i1009513]Installation Guide.

  • Where's the Partition Support?

Why is there no Partition Tab on the Table window? How do you see partition stats?
Why are the partition concatenated to the bottom of the columns if you expand the table node? I have tables with thousands of partitions... it's totally unwieldy.
I'm more and more disappointed with what this tool is missing. Basic, fundemental functionality, and I hear you off building data modeling... I just don't understand.
At my job partitions are as fundemental as columns, as indexes. They need to have the equivalent treatment.

Actually there is a problem with the partitions tab. If you don't pin an initial table that has no partitions, then select a table with partitions, the tab does not appear. So you either need to have pinned the initial table so that the partitions table opens a new set of display editors. We have a bug logged for this and plan to address it for release 2.0 (due for release later this year). You probably experienced that bug.
As for the Data Modeling support, it was due to requests in this forum and on our Exchange that we investigated the need for a data modeling tool. The good news is that we have new developers working on this. While it should not matter how we manage the team, it may comfort you to know that the addition of the tool has in no way impacted the initial development team who are still entirely focused on SQL Developer.
Please feel free to vote on features that have been posted on our Exchange already or to add your own request there.
Both Kris and I have written about how to add extensions to SQL Developer and I often use this to add a sub partitions tab to my table display editors. Take a look here if you are interested: http://sueharper.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-to-add-tabs-to-sql-developer.html
Now the other piece in your query about partitions in the connections navigator, I see your point with my partitions - surely it would be enough to have these in the partitions tab and not to have them in the navigator at all?

  • GUI support for TimesTen

What is the GUI support available for TimesTen? Also the recent releases have removed the support for the Cache Administrator (web-based user interface) has been removed. So what are the options available now?
    Thanks..

As far as Oracle GUI products go, you have the options of using the TimesTen Plug-in for OEM
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/timesten_oem_plugin.html
as well as the latest version of SQL Developer
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/timesten_sqldeveloper.html
which supports working with Cache Groups. I believe the addition of this functionality to SQL Developer was the reason for making Cache Adminstrator redundant.

  • Is partitioning supported in BPC 5.1 (SQL 2005)

    Hi guys
We run BPC 5.1 SP5 on a clustered SQL 2005 environment.
I am looking in to how we can improve response times for our users and one of the suggestions is to partition the AS cube and/or the DB tables.
I am led to believe that partitioning the cube is possible, so am looking for any pointers on the best way to do that (and any ideas of what speed improvements are possible) from someone who has the knowledge.
There has been some debate internally on whether or not it is possible to partition the tables with our version of BPC.  Can anyone confirm whether or not BPC 5.1 SP5 can handle it and the best way to do it using SQL 2005?
I know it's a lot to ask, but I could really use the pointers.
    Thanks
    Craig

    Craig,
You can do Partition in AS DB.
There was a bug in AS that didn't keep partititon information but it was fixed.
    Please try it.
Also you can find How to document in here.

  • TimesTen Cache Connect support for Oracle 11g

The latest 7.0.5 readme mentioned that "Oracle Release 11gR1 is supported with TimesTen Cache Connect to Oracle on Linux x86 32-bit and 64-bit platforms, and on Windows 32-bit."
What about Solaris 10? It looks like on Solaris 10 only Oracle 10gR2 being supported. What is so specific about Oracle 11?
    Thank you,
    Alex

TimesTen 7.0.5 can be used to cache data from different versions of Oracle database.
The reason why the support for Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX were not at the same time as the Linux platform was because Oracle database 11g was not available on those platforms initially. So TimesTen 7.0.5 was certified to support only the ones available first, and support for other platforms was added as 11g became available on those platforms. It was just timing of the certification, code base is the same.

  • Are there any timesten installation for data warehouse environment?

    Hi,
I wonder if there is a way to install timesten as an in memory database for data warehouse environment?
The DW today consist of a large Oralcle database and I wonder if and how a timesten implementation can be done.
what kind of application changes involve with such an implementation and so on?
I know that the answer is probably complex but if anyone knows about such an implementation and some information about it , it would be great to learn from that experience.
    Thanks,
    Adi

    Adi,
It depends on what you want to do with the data in the TimesTen database. If you know the "hot" dataset that you want to cache in TimesTen, you can use Cache Connect to Oracle to cache a subset of your Oracle tables into TimesTen. The key is to figure out what queries you want to run and see if the queries are supported in TimesTen.
Assuming you know the dataset you need to cache and you have control of your application code to change the connection to TimesTen (using ODBC or JDBC), you can give it a try. If you are using a third party tool, you need to see if the tool supports JDBC or ODBC access to the database and change the tool to point to your TimesTen database instead of the Oracle database.
If you are using the TimesTen Cache Connect to Oracle product option, data synchronization between Oracle and TimesTen is handled automatically by the product.
Without further details of what you'd like to do, it's difficult to provide more detailed recommendation.

  • Can I Partition a Time Capsule? and more...

My existing setup consists of an Airport Extreme wirelessly supporting 2 MacBooks ("MBs") 5 iOS devices, 2 WiFi/Airprint printers and then by wire (Ethernet) a couple of other devices.  In addition, the Extreme has a USB external hard drive visible/accessible to both MBs. Both MBs have their own external hard drives configured as Time Machines. All devices have latest software upgrades/updates.
I am thinking of replacing the Extreme with a 3TB Time Capsule ("TC") and I propose to Partition the TC's drive into 3 – with one partition supporting MB1's TM, the second supporting MB2's TM, and the third partition supporting/acting like a common hard drive (the same as exists external on the Extreme).  The existing external hard drives acting as TMs would be set aside and saved for TM recoveries; the TC situate TMs would simply commence as new TMs (I envision difficulties not worth the effort in moving the existing TM backups to the TC).
Query 1:  Can the latest 3TB Time Capsule be partitioned as I have proposed? (The reason I pose the question is a series of discussions dating back to 2012 that indicate a TC cannot be partitioned but the current Apple Store page for the 3TB TC  indicates a TC can support multiple TMs:  "you can back up all the Mac computers in your home to a central location.") A review indicates the TC established at least two TMs automatically, but I'd like to also dedicate some space for a third partition non-TM drive….so, the Q – can I partition a TC?
Query 2:  Would I just be better off not trying to partition the TC and just letting it support two TMs automatically and plugging in a separate hard drive, as I currently have?  (Why hasn't Apple upgraded the USB connection to 3.0? oh, well, they probably will a month after I buy mine, right?  )
Query 3:  When moving the existing MBs from desk to couch it is necessary to first eject the existing TM external hard drives. If the TMs are moved to (or replaced by) a TC that would appear to no longer be necessary – because they aren't physically connected anyway. (Having typed this it seems so obvious, but….I'm asking because I just want to confirm.)
Any other suggestions/observations/watch-its would be welcomed. Thanks.

The Time Capsule drive cannot be partitioned in a traditional sense unless you pull the drive from the Time Capsule (which voids the warranty), place the drive in a SATA to USB caddy or enclosure, attach the caddy directly to a Mac, and then use Disk Utility for the formatting operation. Once that is done, then you have to reinstall the drive back in the Time Capsule.  Not a job for the faint of heart....and best left to a technician.
The Time Capsule "as is", can support multiple Time Machine backups from different Macs, but is basically a free for all as far as space is concerned. Time Machine backs up to a special file called a sparsebundle on the Time Capsule, and while it is possible to modify or limit the size of the sparsebundle file for each Mac, it is a complex operation. This document will give you an idea of the process:

Much simpler, therefore much better to do it this way.

Time Machine will automatically back up to the Time Capsule once you have it set up. No need to mount, or eject the drive, etc.
Any other suggestions/observations/watch-its would be welcomed.
The current version of the Time Capsule will be two years old in June....and Apple traditionally introduces new products in June.

  • A question about cache group error in TimesTen 7.0.5

    hello, chris:
we got some errors about cache group :
    2008-09-21 08:56:15.99 Err : ORA: 229574: ora-229574-3085-ogTblGC00405: Failed calling OCI function: OCIStmtFetch()

and the exact scene is: our oracle server was restart for some reason, but we didnot restart the cache group agent. then iit start appear those errors informations.
we want to know, if the oracle server restart, whether we need to restart cache agent?? thank you..

Yes, the tracking table will track all changes to the associated base table. Only changes that meet the cache group WHERE clause predicate will be refreshed to TimesTen.
The tracking table is managed automatically by the cache agent. As long as the cache agent is running and AUTOREFRESH is occurring the table will be space managed and old data will be purged.
It is okay if very occasionally an AUTOREFRESH is unable to complete within its defined interval but if this happens with any regularity then this is a problem since this situation is unsustainable. To remedy this you need to try one or more of:
    1. Tune execution of AUTOREFRESH queries in Oracle. This may mean adding additional indexes to some of the cached Oracle tables. There is an article on this in MetaLink (doc note 473493.1).
    2. Increase the AUTOREFRESH interval so that a refresh can always complete within the defined interval.
In any event it is important that you have enough space to cope with the 'steady state' size of the tracking table. If the cache agent will not be running for any significant length of time you need to manually cleanup the tracking table. In TimesTen 11g a script to do this is provided but it is not officially supported in TimesTen 7.0.
If the rate of updates on the base table is such that you cannot arrive at a sustainable situation by tuning etc. then you will need to consider more radical options such as breaking the table into multiple separate tables :-(

  • Using TimesTen with Oracle 11g

In documentation I didn't find any information about supporting by Timesten connects to Oracle 11g. So is Timesten can be connected to Oracle 11g or not? Now I've connected it but I'm not sure in proper work of this pair.

TimesTen 7.0.3 Cache Connect to Oracle supports Oracle 11g on Linux x86 (32-bit).
Additional platforms will be certified in upcoming maintenance release.
    What platform are you using?

  • Geolocation (Logical Partition) on Mobility with Smartphones

    Hello
We have a new project coming up and the primary requirement is Smartphone Integration with CUCM. (Nokia, Iphone and Android Phones)..
This project will be deployed in India and now my concern is, since here in India there are DOT regulations for TEHO.
When I configure a Smartphone to integrate with CUCM, if this smartphone user tries to make a call to another IP phone extension at a different location over the WAN and while this call is on, if he conference this with a local PSTN number from his VOIP line on the smartphone then this is going to be a violation.
To avoid this problem in India, I know Cisco introduced the Geolocation (Logical partition feature).
But do these smart phones support the Geolocation configuration.
I read in the release notes of CUCM that
" Logical partitioning handling does not take place in the following circumstances:
    • Geolocation or geolocation filter does not associate with the involved devices.
    • No logical partitioning support exists when a dual-mode phone is used. "
Can you help me with a confirmation on this and if possible a better solution to ensure no violation of any regulation while using Smartphone as IP Phone extensions.
    Thanks in Advance
    Abraham Sebastian

Windows 8.1 can run on either partition. The biggest issue with MBR over GPT is that MBR is limited to the size od disks supported. 4 partitions of up to 2TB max. GPT has a theoretical limit of 9.4 Zettabytes (10 Billion TB). You may also run into a problem if you are dual booting (or more). If neither of those two things concern you, then just leave well enough alone. About the Virtual hard drive, do you really need them? They will just eat up more space on the real harddrive. Are you going to use a Virtual machine?

Please direct me to a timesten plugin for sql developer 1.2.1...

Also, I would recommend using the latest 1.5.x release of SQL Developer. the support for TimesTen comes with 1.5.x, out of the box.
No need to install a separate extension/plug-in as with SQL Dev 1.2.1
