PB still thinks external monitor is there

Any thoughts on why my Powerbook still thinks the secondary monitor is attached?
I had connected an external monitor to my PB via the S-Video port for a presentation, and since then - it still thinks the monitor is there.
I've restarted, reset PRAM, logged in as a newly created user, and it still allows me to move the trackpad passed the LCD's boundries.
There has to be another option besides reinstalling the whole system?

Perhaps try connecting the PB to a different external display to make it forget the S-video connected one was ever there. Hopefully it will then forget the newly connected one once you have detached it.
Admittedly this is not a great solution and certainly doesn't get you to the root of the original problem.

  • MBP still thinks external display is connected when it's not

I have my MBP connected via DVI to an external LCD (HP w2007). Whenever I disconnect the DVI plug from my MBP, my MBP thinks the external monitor is still connected. I can go to Sysprefs > Displays > Gather Windows and it'll clearly have the HP's display pref window showing up.
This is a huge issue since any programs that were previously shown on the external display continue to think the display is still there and then I can't access them.

Had posted here because I figured the hold time for Apple support would be long because of Leopard's release. Hold times were not too bad. Problem is solved by resetting PRAM.

  • Configuring LG TV as external monitor

I'm trying to configure an LG TV (22LG30R) as external monitor for my MacBook (second generation). I've tried two different setups:
    1) *RGB connection* (using a mini-DVI to VGA adapter and a VGA to VGA cable)
In this mode, the maximum resolution is 1680x1050. However, the image is blurry, specially in texts and window borders.
    2) *HDMI connection* (using a mini-DVI to DVI adapter and an HDMI to DVI-D single link cable)
In this mode, the maximum resolution is 1920x1080 (interlaced or progressive). However, the output image is not full screen, even though this is the maximum resolution for the external monitor. There are black borders on the four sides of the screen. If I tick the zooming/scaling checkbox under the TV output options, the external image becomes bigger than the TV, making the upper and lower menus disappear.
In all cases, I'm using the extended monitor configuration (different resolutions for the external monitor and the MacBook screen). I've tried to configure the external monitor in both Mac OS X 10.5 and Windows Vista, but the result was the same.
Is there any way to configure the external monitor properly? Why are there black borders even though I'm using the TV's maximum resolution?
    Thanks a lot,
    Tiago

Thanks again, BSteely. I've read the pages you mentioned now.
Using the RGB connection, I tried to auto-configure the image (as described in page 36). However, the blurry images and black shadows are still very noticeable. I also tried to adjust the phase and clock sliders manually, as per page 37, but I saw no improvement.
I took a few pictures of the TV screen to to show what I'm trying to say:
    http://img36.imageshack.us/my.php?image=53107017.jpg
    http://img35.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lg2t.jpg
In the first picture, you can notice a black shadow around the letter "L" and the LG logo (specially on the right side). In the second picture, all the letters are a bit blurry and the unpleasant shadow is still there. When the font is smaller, the effect becomes even worse, making it hard to even read the texts.
Do you think my TV is faulty or am I being too critical?

  • Possible to connect an external monitor to HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC

I have a HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC model # A1M02AV and it has a VGA port, one that looks like a phone/broadband cable port, and one that looks like a USB port but indented on either side at the bottom. Can I even connect an external monitor? How do I find out if I have more than 1 video card? Besides the usual USB/headphone ports, I don't have any other ports. It says my drivers are up to date...but I don't even know what I should be looking for. Do I need to install something or buy some sort of adapter?
I am trying to connect a Dell external montitor via the VGA port with a VGA cable. The monitor has power but my notebook does not recognize/detect it. However, when I first plugged it in, my notebook display shrank into a square (vs the whole screen) so it recognized something...but nothing happened on the external monitor.
I tried detecting it via my display settings, but  I accidentally changed some dispaly setting so that the home desktop only shows on monitor 1, but unselected my actual notebook display or something or changed it to be monitor 2 (even though monitor 1 does not exist), so when I plug the cable in to my notebook, all of a sudden my desktop goes away and it's a just a blank background screen - and I cannot access the computer display settings or anything.... when the cable is unplugged this setting looks normal, so I can't figure out how to fix it.
Sorry, I have no idea what I'm doing here - please help!

    Hi,
All Dell monitors come with CD's for drivers. Your laptop may not know the monitor w/o its driver, it won't install automatically. Please check:
Ringht click a blank space on desktop,
    Click Personalize
    Click Display
    Click Change display settings
Can you see BOTH laptop screen and external monitor in there as shown on the following image:
For testing, I put my Dell monitor is my main display. If I can't see 2 monitor, you need its driver first and then check the cable.
    Regards.

  • How do I get a video signal to an external monitor via the mini-display port on my Mac Book Air?

I can't get a video signal out through my mini-display port on my Mac Book Air (version 1).  Thus I can't feed BBC iPlayer to an external monitor.  There is some connectivity - the MAC wallpaper is broadcast, the mouse pointer is visible and sound is transferred.  Is it likely to be a cable connection problem (though the cable works with a Windows operating laptop)?

First, what you said is contradictory. You say "can't get a video signal", then say"the Mac wallpaper is broadcast, the mouse pointer is visible". "No video signal" means an absolutely black, blank screen. It sounds like you have plenty of signal.
I am supposing what you are seeing is actually a blank desktop, which is to be expected if your settings are such that you are extending the desktop, instead of mirroring it.
Within the preference panes is a setting that allows you to change this. Open System Preferences, click Displays, and then click Arrangement. You will see that you are extending the desktop. Change that setting.

The VGA adapter is only 4" long, do you have an extension? If so, the computer should register the adapter and the images should be displayed. Any more details would help to see what's wrong.

  • DVD SP, Intensity Pro Card, No External Monitor.

I have a Black Magic Intensity Pro card that outputs fine with FCP. The DVDSP documentation says that it supports external monitoring but there is no selection option available in the playback or simulation preferences in the pulldown menu. Has anyone had any success with DVDSP and external monitoring?

    DVD SP Preferences/Simulator Tab/Playback Ouput/Video.
There is a drop down menu for the Simulator window.
Your device, if it is to show up, will show up there.

You are referring to a feature called Clamshell Mode, please read Clamshell Mode setup for instructions.
BTW when posting when you use generalities such as "have tried everything" this tells us nothing. When posting please be specific and try to paint a complete picture. It just makes things easier for those trying to help you.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

  • I plugged my macbook pro into an external monitor, then unplugged it later and now it is stuck with black borders on top and bottom and zoomed out like it is still on the monitor. How do I fix it?

I started using my external monitor with my macbook pro and as soon as I plug it in it to the monitor it adjusts the screen by zooming out a bit and creating about 3/4 of an inch black borders on the top and bottom of the screen. But these dont show up on the monitor so I assumed it was fine. But when I took it off the monitor, the borders were still there like it was still on the monitor. Any hellp? Its starting to mess with my eyes haha.

    Hi aefulcher,
It sounds like you had the external display set to mirror the internal display so the resolution(s) were changed to match each other.

  • FCP through to External monitor....Sound fine but video is still frames

    Hi everybody
In January of this year this problem was posted by Andy D.....
+No matter what combination of settings I choose I cannot get video to play on my HD monitor only a still of the last frame shows up. When I hit play the audio is loud and clear and then when I hit stop the final frame appears on the screen.+
I have this problem but only when the material in my FCP viewer, canvas or sequence is ProRes422 (I'd converted H264s to this before importing into project)! If the project is DV or H264 material that has been rendered by FCP, it plays on the external monitor fine but it seems if we start looking at the high end stuff like ProRes, back to sound but still picture.
I might add here that the path to my external Full HD monitor is through firewire to an ADVC100 converter and then composite cables to the input of the monitor. By the way the same thing happens with an SD monitor.
I haven't tried using my video camera as the link through to the monitor instead of the ADVC100. Would this make a difference? I'd be pretty happy if someone had a solution for this.
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Peter L

Unless the camera is a DVCPRO HD camera...like the HPX-170...this won't work. Not via HDV or AVCHD. Playout isn't as simple as it was with DV. There are far cheaper capture cards...Decklink Intensity Pro, Matrox MXO2 mini...but you need a MacPro for those (or with the MXO2 MIni, a laptop with an Express34 slot). An iMac is severely limited in what it can do.
    Sorry.
    #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • HT5019 Is there a way to disable the toolbar from preventing windows being dragged to external monitors configured above it?

My preferred display arrangement is to have 2 external monitors (extended display) above my macbook pro screen.  While it is possible to configure this in my display preferences, the toolbar on my desktop prevents me from dragging anything to the external monitors.  Is there a way to disable whatever the toolbar is doing to cause this?

I have exactly the same concern. It seems it would be a simple fix for Apple to allow users to turn off the camera (and even the mic) while keeping FaceTime open -- especially now that it turns out FaceTime must remain open in order to send and receive iPhone calls on a Mac.
I like to think this new functionality of FaceTime will be baked into a future release of Yosemite, as the current setup has that not-quite-finished feel of a work in progress. In the meantime, there's nothing like a little piece of Post-It stuck over the camera to keep the NSA from watching your face as you type a post to the Apple Support Communities.

Got the "apple firewire ntsc" choice to show up even if grayed out and "missing" under "audio/visual" menus by recreating choices in Easy Setup under "final cut pro" MENU thank GOODNESS because I was reading horror stories on here about this under another thread with someone trashing preferences, reinstalling and the works and still not getting it to show up...on my search now for an analog/digital converter up at b&h...find it odd that the s video connector wouldn't show the crt monitor when I put both displays through the 3870...I switched it back to see if it worked again when only the one dell monitor display was there and there it is again mirroring the screen display on my desktop...just can't be seen as an "external monitor" in fcp...couldn't find anything specific in the shane ross threads to this. I'm sad the program doesn't just see the s video connection though the 3870 though my computer does fine and will query up at b&h in regard to what might be affordable as far as a digital/analog converter. It's also weird in itself that when I put the two dell monitors on the one card my computer no longer could see the s video crt connection...makes no sense. Will report in later as to what I discover up at b&h as I'm sure there's a world of people out there using this sony crt monitor still even into the upgrades with computers and software so I imagine therein lies the solution. Thanks again and I'll report in as to what hardware might be suggested for me.

    Dear Jean:
It sounds like you are trying to get your external monitor to act as the primary viewing screen. For example it would have your Doc, Icons, Etc. In order to make the external monitor the primary screen you have to:
    Open System Preferences.
    Choose the Displays Icon
There will be several tabs to choose from pick Arrangement
Drag the toolbar to desired display
Let me know if this helps at all!
