PC Specs for "Non-Techy" Using CS5

My head is swimming with all the tech talk on best configuration to run Photoshop CS5.  I've read all the articles and know many of you techies disagree on some fine points, but there are A LOT of us photographers out there who use photoshop for portrait touch-ups, creating composites, photo banners, etc and No 3-D or Video/Gaming rqmnts but are ignorant about all these details.  I sure would appreciate a suggestion on purchasing a new PC for someone who doesn't know how to build them.  (I do know how to add more RAM.....!)?
I went to NewEgg and on the Desktop PC Power Search see many choices I don't know how to complete.  For example:
1. CPU Type: I believe dual core is what i need so should i choose Core 2 Duo; Core Duo, or Pentium Dual-Core?  (maybe all the same?)
2. CPU Speed: I believe 3.2 GHz min was suggestion I read.
3. GPU/VPU Type:  Help!  Too many choices.
4. Memory Capacity:  I believe I'll settle on 8GB initially so should i choose DDR, DDR2 or DDR3?
5. HDD Capacity: I think I'll go 1 TB but I read a suggestion of a 3x 1TB- where do i determine this? we store lots of photos (school photography).
6. I know i need a 2nd hard drive which i guess is for a scratch disk (this is an error i sometimes get on my current pc).  I like the suggestion of a 1x SSD, 60 gb min, so where do I stipulate this?  Should i buy it separately and watch a YouTube video to see how to install?
7. I read about having 3 hard drives, application/storage/scratch.  Do I really need all 3 for my usage or would the above 2 be fine?  I use an external and on-line storage for back-up so am mostly focused on what I actually need to get my work done at the momemt.
Maybe there's not a computer I can buy, but maybe someone could recommend a base model and I'll find a YouTube to learn how to add the rest.
Thansk so much.  I sure do appreciate someone coming down here in the world of the ignorant and helping me out.

You're welcome, and thanks in return.
I am a career computer/software engineer, yet I tend to avoid the real nitty gritty of putting individual parts together, since there are companies like Dell who do a darned good job with system design.
With the purchase and "reconfiguation" of a used/refurbished machine, you are taking on more of the system integration tasks yourself (as compared with buying a new, turnkey system), but it's nowhere near as involved as a parts-up system build.  You're also taking on responsibility for replacing/repairing the parts you buy if they should go bad, but many do have their own warranties (e.g., new drives come with warranties of their own).
To answer your specific questions...  Bascially you plug the drives into the SATA 0, 1, 2, ... cables/connectors provided on the motherboard, plug in the provided power cables, mount the drives in their spots, and you're ready to go.  Things can get just a little tricky if the workstation does not come with all the little plastic parts that are used to mount the drives in their spots, and if you want to mount a 3rd internal drive you have to put it where a second optical drive would go.  You can order these parts from Dell, but I have fabricated many corner mounts for drives out of small cubes of stiff packing foam, which also has the added advantage of vibration and noise reduction.  You just have to make sure most of the drive chassis is open to the air for cooling.
Once installed, there are BIOS menus in these Precision workstations that you access by pressing a function key during bootup, and they can be used to set up the RAID array, which isn't too difficult.  But, while it can really boost performance, RAID is not strictly necessary.  If you used, for example, just two drives (I have three), you could just set them up as C: and D:.  You do want at least two drive letters (physically separate drives) for best Photoshop performance.  You would, for example, have your OS and program files, etc. on drive C:, then you'd be free to use D: for data files and Photoshop scratch usage.  With or without a RAID drive C:, Windows 7 just loads right on, no problems.
Here's an image of the inside of a Precision T5400 showing the locations of the drive bays, which pivot out for drive insertion.
This is one of the RAID setup screens...
If you should get one of these T5400 machines, I'll be happy to help you with the specifics of the setup, since I've been through it myself.

  • Best output for non disk use

I have several closely related questions about Adobe Premier.
When I work with standard definition video and Adobe Premier, I have always been producing video DVDs. I start with digital video on DVCPro, Mini-DV or DVCam tapes and play them via firewire into a computer where I capture it using Adobe Premier. Premier creates an .avi file. Later when I add titles and output from Premier for Encore, Premier creates a separate .m2v and .wav file which Encore uses to make the DVD.
My first question is: Is this .avi file the highest quality format that Premier can capture to ? Are there capture quality settings ? the reason I ask this is because i never thought of an .avi file as being abroadcast quality format and have been suspicious of it since i started using Premier nearly 10 years ago.
I have always been very unhappy with the degradation in quality when making DVDs. This is of course understandable considering the Digital video, which looks very good, is recorded at 25 megabytes per second, while a DVD uses quite a bit less. I have been very dissapointed that no standard has yet to be created for using Blu Ray disks for standard definition video. A Blu Ray disk could hold full quality digital standard definition video, and could hold a lot of it. So I have been considering foregoing the many advantages of an optical disk, and instead, or in addition to, producing files for playback from a video server.
My second question is: Can a video server play back separate video and audio files as one ?
My third question is: If my intention is not to use Encore to produce a DVD but instead to produce a file for server playback, what is the highest quality format Premier can output that is likely to play back on a video server ?
I also use Premier to produce HD video, which I have been putting onto Blu Ray disks. I have been very happy with the quality of the final disk product. I don't know how much better this video could look if I didn't compress it for the disk. I have no way at this time to play anything on a HD TV that isn't on a Blu Ray disk. I start with either XDCamEx video files or streams of uncompressed 1080 tifs. Premier then creates a separate H.264 (.m4v) and.wav file, which Encore turns into an .iso file from which i make the Blu Ray disk.
My fourth question: If I were not outputting HD video from Premier to send to Encore for making a Blu Ray disk, what is the highest quality 1080 format Premier can output which is likely to play back on a video server ?

at this time h265 is one of a few codecs missing from adobe's software. if you want to encode to h265 you can look at a free encoder, called handbrake. it doesn't work with adobe's software directly, so you will have to use it to re-encode an exported video from premiere/ame.
h.265 was chosen as the codec for 4k/uhd blurays, this doesn't mean 4k tv's that play media files will support it. its still somewhat new, so there might be some tv's that lack this support. if you are planning on taking media on thumb drives to other places, you might look at h264 for the most compatibility.  if you are just playing this media on your tv, then you just need to figure out what you will use as the media player.  some smart tv's will do this, some bluray players can, and then there are dedicated media players like the Sony FMP X10. the sony isn't really a media "server", as much as a media "player". the sony media player has a 1tb hdd inside, so it stores the media itself rather than needing a separate media server to hold the media.
the Sony FMP X10 may be fine for what you need, but its pretty expensive for a player with only a 1tb hdd inside. there are bluray players that output 4k/uhd, for under $300 that will also act as a media player. if you already have one check if it does any playback from a networked computer or a usb hdd. however those bluray players may only support hd files, vs 4k media files. finding a media player that supports 4k media files and h265 like the sony says it does, might be more difficult. there are other 4k media players with no internal hdd. they use a network media server and some support usb hdds. 4k is very new still, so there will be more 4k media players coming to market, to push prices down.
the internal or usb hdd's are the simplest solution vs setting up software on a computer to stream files over a network. if media collection requires multiple hdd's then using a computer to hold all the hdd's and stream the videos over a network, can be a good option. there are many media players and media servers, and alot of features that each can offer. if you haven't already, look up guides, tutorials, reviews, etc, to help figure out what you want to do.

  • Privileges to EUL5_X objects for non-developers using PLUS

I have granted only SELECT access to the EUL5_xxx objects (tables, views and Sequence) to users who will only be accessing shared reports and not creating their own.. But those users get an insufficient privileges error.. So I have to give them the same as the developers (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE),,,
Does anyone know why that is ? Or better what are list of tables that require these DML privileges for users who will only be running reports - again - not creating them
    thanks
    OBX.....

Yes I know the capabilities and function of the Disco Administrator... But I am more concerned with people using their account, inadvertently , to perform DML functions on the EUL_X tables.. To me this seems like a major security hole, for all it takes is a savvy users to use MS Access, setup an ODBC connection and boom - they could easily delete data... Naturally there is no reason for them to do so - but that deos not safeguard the disco metadata..
Seems like a big issue with Discoverer..
So if I am wrong - please let me know....

  • Oracle DB Enterprise for non-commercial use

    Hi.
I've unusual question about using an Enterprise edition od Oracle Database (11g). I need to show some extended options of this daabase in my thesis, but I don't know how long can I use it after the installation. If I remember correctly, when I using 10g version there wasn't any time limits to use database, but I also know that Enterprise Edition is extremely expensive edition of Oracle DB.
    Anybody knows how it works?

  • Outlook Pro 2007 'Non-Commercial Use Only' issue

I have outlook 2007 that states that it is for 'non-commercial use only'
I have searched far and wide for the answer but to find nothing.
There was no upgrade from 2003/home/student. Just straight OS load, Office Pro 2007 load. They did tell me that after 'something' happened it started to show that. So it has been not showing that for months, maybe years, until about 2 months ago. They can't
tell me what that 'something' was because they can't remember.
It seems to me that the only way is to reload the PC completely. We are running a KMS and in a company of 1500 PCs about 3% are having this issue. Very small but enough for me to get a call about it.
    Please dont tell me:
    That I had Home&Student - I dont
    To do repairs/uninstall/reinstall - I have 30x
To do reg edits - Reg shows that the Product ID is correct and there are no 9.0/11.0 containers
To deal with it - We have programs that use Outlook and are affected
Tp check updates - Uninstalled as far back as they can remember when it started (2012)
    Don't link this:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2020690/en-us
Sorry about being kind of straight forward and mean but I'm bashing my head trying to figure this out. I rather not reload 40+ PC just for this issue.

    Who are "they"?
Have you verified that the correct key has been used, the Office client can renew the key via the KMS, sufficient keys/licenses are available on the KMS (depending on your licensing method) and that no unlicensed Office 2007 components are installed?
You can use the "cscript ospp.vbs" commands to further narrow things down.
    For instance with:
    cscript ospp.vbs –act
    cscript ospp.vbs –dhistory
Also note that SP3 and later updated haven't been applied yet.

What are the ideal Mac Pro specs for a professional graphic designer using CS5 Premium- using mostly InDesign, Illustrator and PhotoShop?

    24GB RAM
    SSD for boot drive
GHz, but not necessarily dual. Apple doesn't sell dual 3.33s.
A single 3.33 6-core should do fine and "sweet spot" (when looking, there is "4-core" build to order..,. and like everything else on the Store, why in heavens they didn't be more accurate and clear and say "single socket" and then have "dual processor configurations" 0 I guess the writers don't understand or know workstations or jargon? I say that 'cause some have trouble even finding the 6-core 3.33 choice ($1200 over stock 2.8 4-core).
W3680 though can be found on Buy.com for $620 (was $589 at earlier date) and people are known to then sell the stock cpu $300 making it even more attractive and save $600-900 that way rather easily. Or not.
But yes, I would send you to MPG.com site as well and read through what is on there.

Hi, I have been using CS5 for a while now, but had to wipe my computer clean last night and now am unable to re-install my adobe on the same computer. Help please.

Can you describe more about what you summarize as "unable to re-install my adobe on the same computer." ?  What actions do you take and what results?  What messages do you get?  Are you able to install it on a different computer?
Since you use the word "same", it might be a case that you do have another machine that the install is functional on.  If so, or even if you installed a couple of times on the same machine, it might be a case where your activation allowance has been used up and you need to have them reset.  If you contact Adobe Support thru chat you can ask them to reset your activations so that you have the two allotted to you available again.

  • "SSO" for non-sap web application using SAPGUI to browse?

I have a web application (non SAP) and the user base are also SAP users in an ABAP system.
To strengthen the authentication in the web app, I wanted to implement SSO
authentication as we pity the users for having to remember so many strong pw's and I
dont like LDAP based pw sync or other technology I dont understand, because then we are
just yet another application with the same pw...
We are having technical problems implementing SSO on the web app side, and are anyway a
bit sceptical about the user admin / role admin assignment if we get it to work.
So I have created a transaction in SAP which browses the web app and the intention is to
send the SAP sy-uname as the web app user. We can control this using s_tcode, and
an own auth object on the WAS side and a check on the session type before the connection is
established. In this sense we are dependent on the SAP concept implemented, but even so:
The role assignment is controlled in the web app itself -> so assume that I am not overly
worried about unauthorized access to the web application, as they would not have any
system role for it as their sy-uname does not exist. (Infact we can monitor this)
The browser on the front end is the SAPGUI with html controls on the SAP side.
I would be interested in knowing whether anyone else has experience with this approach, and
whether there are any areas to be carefull of?
I would also like to know whether this is a strategic error?
    Kind regards,
    Julius

    Hi Julius,
well, if that web application would run on the same ABAP backend system then the solution described in <a href="http://service.sap.com/~iron/fm/011000358700000431401997E/0612670">SAP Note 612670</a> would be applicable:
a so-called "Re-entrance ticket" (based on the "SAP logon ticket" SSO proceedings) is issued, transported via the SAPGUI connection and back to the system via the invoked HTML control.
But for non-SAP web applications that does not help.
In that case only X.509 client certificates can be used for SSO. Actually, the web application could then also be invoked directly (independent from the SAPGUI session). The user is authenticated based on the X.509 client certificate - and not based on the ABAP userID (of the SAPGUI session).
Well, if you don't mind the effort you could also use the "SAP Logon Ticket evaluation library" (sapssoext, see <a href="http://service.sap.com/~iron/fm/011000358700000431401997E/0304450">SAP Note 304450</a>) to evalute the SAP logon ticket externally. You'll then need to have a "stub application" at the ABAP side that triggers the http redirect to your external web application. Not a nice solution but a possible one.
In the future SAML browser artifacts would be an option (preferable to integrate non-SAP applications). But currently that's not available (for NWAS ABAP).
    Cheers, Wolfgang

  • Using Eudora or Netscape7 for non-verizon email accounts with FIOS for access

Since Verizon does not give tech support to 3rd party email clients, and using a non-Verizon email account creates additional problems, I decided to share what I learned the very hard way....certainly with no help whatever from Verizon tech support.
First of all, there may have been a time (a day, a month, some random nanosecond) when you had to change the port to 587 it is no longer the case.  Port 25 works just fine, and in fact 587 no longer works in most cases.  So ignore tech support's claim that all you have to do is change the port number to 587...don't do it.
And so long as you want to use a pop account other than verizon for your incoming email you will have to use what is referred to as SMTP Relay.  Verizon tech support will tell you that Verizon no longer supports SMTP Relay, and technically speaking that is true, but Verizon SMTP Relay is not what you need anyway.  What you need is to use the SMTP Relay facility of your Email Client, in my case Eudora and (for my wife) Netscape 7.
Now before you can actually do anything you will have to have a valid Verizon email account, even if you never plan to actually use your verizon email address.  That means before you can set up your email client you must have a verizon email address. The tech who installed my FIOS supposedly set up my computer, which meant I had internet access, but he didn't set up the verizon email address.  I wasted 2 days before this came to light...so just make sure you have one before starting.
Netscape 7.0  has an email client my wife has used forever so I had to make it work for Verizon FIOS.  Fortunatly they have a built in SMTP Relay facility (although they never call it that).  You set up your pop (incoming) server the way you always have.  In my our email accounts are on Earthlink, so you use the earthlink POP server for your incoming email.  If you are switching from whatever you have to Verizon FIOS, you will already have that set up anyway.  But you will have to change the SMTP server address to outgoing.verizon.net    and you will have to click the box that says Use Authentication, with  User Name and Password.  You will put into the User Name your verizon email account except without the .verizon.net    And the first time you use this Client to send email it will ask your for your password (use your Verizon password) and you should check the box that says to remember this password.    This will make everything work fine.  You will see on the SMTP Server information page a box that allows you to fill in the port.  If you leave it blank it will use port 25.  If you put in another port number it has to be right, and what is the correct number keeps changing based on which verizon person you talk to.  I found that 25 works, although they say it won't, and that others don't work, although they say they will.
To Use Eudora (as i do)  first you have to be using the latest version 7.1 because it appears to be the first one that truely supports SMTP Relay. That's a free download if you don't have it.   Then you have to use multiple personalities.  Effectively you set up one personality (go to to tools and click on personalities) which is your normal email account (ie not your verizon one).  This is used for everything with the exception of the SMTP Server interaction.  YOu then set up a second personality which is for your Verizon email account. Be aware that you can still have that account use your normal email return address so folks who receive email from you can reply to your normal email address.  You can, independantly from that set up your incoming email pop account to be either your normal one or your verizon incoming email account (I do it the later way so I can receive something actually sent to my Verizon account, although I never give that out.  But now the important thing is that you set up your SMTP server to be outgoing.verizon.net  set up User Name to be your verizon email account but without the verizon.net and click on Authentication Allowed and Use Relay Personality.  Don't click on Use submission port 587, like I said you want to use 25, but if verizon has changed that yet again no problem as you can set up the port to use independantly using the Tools/Options/Ports , and finally you go to the Tools/Options/SendingMail stuff and select the SMTP Relay Personality to be the one that is set up for the Verizon email account.  That means your client will operate using your primary personality for everything except the SMTP part and for that it will get all its parameters from the Relay Personality.
    This all worked.

I use Eudora a my email client and routinely receive both my Verizon and ATT emails.
The last email I received  from my Verizon account was at 10:30pm on August 5.  I cannot send emails from Eudora at all either.
My Verizon DSL email account is active through Verizon-Florida at my home there.  I am currently at my Ohio home and the DSL account is with Frontier which purchased Verizon here in Ohio.
Does anyone know what might have happened to have resulted in my emails not being sent to or from my Eudora Client?

  • Can Jdeveloper Be Used For Non-Oracle Databases

I have been trying to evaluate Jdeveloper 9i and Jbuilder 7 Enterprise for Swing database development. I am particularly interested in the productivity enhancements such as BC4J and Jclient. The underlying database might be Oracle, SapDb (excellent, easy to use, and free), SQLServer, etc.
I evaluated Jbuilder Enterprise tools and it worked flawlessly with SapDb. This emphasized using their DataExpress and DbSwing components which provide many useful capabilities similar to BC4j and Jclient. It also involved using their DBPilot tool which allows browsing similar to that provided via a Jdeveloper connection.
I tried to use Jdeveloper for the same SapDB and it is essentially non-functional. I followed the instructions for using a non-default driver and tried to define a connection. It behaved inconsistently: often saying no suitable driver can be found and yet when you edit the connection and test without making any changes, it works. If you try to establish a BC4J definition, it is very inconsistent and fails to recognize important details as foreign keys. Even if you define a ViewLink manually, it still does not work properly if you attempt to define a Master-Detail Jclient form. As I have stated, all these types of capabilities worked flawlessly in their Jbuilder equivalent. Furthermore, I really like the fact that Jbuilder gives many of BC4Js benefits without needing a BC4J J2EE container.
Has anyone had real success using Jdeveloper's advanced features to develop for non-Oracle databases and if so, how did you get around these types of problems?

    Hi,
generally, SCAN can be used for 10g databases and you discovered the first half: for 10g databases you will have to modify the REMOTE_LISTENER entry for each 10g database instance to point to the SCAN listeners (as opposed to pointing to the remote local listeners, which is the default in 10g). You could even have the databases registers themselves with SCAN and the remote listeners, if you wanted to... It's more or less a matter of configuration. But for simplification reasons, I will stick to the case where you have your 10g databases register with the SCAN listeners only.
Now the other half is the client and the client configuration. An 11g Rel. 2 client configured for RAC would have a TNSNAMES entry that has only one address line for the RAC databases. The host entry in this one address line should point to the SCAN (the SCAN name is ideally resolved in DNS). A 10g client configured for RAC would have as many address lines in the TNSNAMES as you have nodes in the cluster.
The 10g client SCAN configuration would then be in the middle so to speak: You would have 3 address lines in your TNSNAMES, in which each host entry would resolve to one SCAN address (I assume you will use the recommended default of 3 SCAN IPs). If you choose, you can have a name resolution for each of your SCAN IPs, but this would not be required. Now, why would you do it this way? Because this configuration will always work and does not make you dependent on certain functionality that your DNS server may or may not offer.
For the remaining questions: SCAN is a DNS entry resolving one name to more than one (typically 3) IP addresses. OID is short for Oracle Internet Directory, which is a complete LDAP server. And you are right that there is no document how to configure 10g clients for SCAN from Oracle yet. However, there is a quite good document on SCAN on otn.oracle.com/rac, but I am sure you are aware of it already.
    Hope that helps. Thanks,
    Markus

  • Minimum specs for use as a media centre?

I would like to have a Mac Mini hooked up to my tv to use as a media centre. i have worked out that i will be able to use it without a keyboard mouse etc by setting it up so front row or vlc load up on boot and using the remote, so am ok there...
my question is this - what is the recomended spec for it to be able to play hd movie rips in .mkv/mp4 format? i have a 1.25ghgz emac an that suffers horribly so i want something that will do the job effortlessly. obviously i could just buy the very latest MM but am looking to save a bit of cash if possible!
    thanks for any advice...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It might help to know in what way the 1.25 eMac suffers horribly in this situation, because in reality, the media centre functions of a system don't require particularly high performance or system specifications. For example, I have a 1.5 G4 mini hooked up to a TV, use Front Row to play mp4 movie files and either VLC or DVD player to play DVDs and it performs pretty well. The quality of image of the mp4 playback depends on settings when the files were ripped more than anything, and the overall quality of image depends a lot on the TV rather than the system.
It must be said that the almost any of the Intel minis is considerably more powerful than your eMac, but in itself, power isn't necessarily the answer!

where do I put them so CS5.5 can find and use them?
How do I get CS5.5 to stop trying to connect to the Internet at start up when I cannot get to the properties to change the setting?
I found this note http://helpx.adobe.com/legacy/kb/device-central-cs4-cannot-connect.html providing an offline solution for DC CS4 which deos not work with CS5.5.

    Hi Eric,
CS5 Help is usually located at /usr/<username>/Library/Preferenecs/chc.487...../Local Store/Help folder.
CS6 help is usually downloaded to the shared location, unless it is restricted. In that case the above folder may be used for downloading help.
Yes, the offline content setting in Adobe Help Manager, will work for both CS5 and CS6 help and help clients.
'Expired Status' usually refers to the state when local content goes stale, and there is new offline content available on Adobe.com servers. Yes, a user may click on Download/Update button to update the expired content from Adobe Help Manager.
Regarding the CS5 product help launch, I will need some more information to provide a reply.
    1. Which product and version of CS5 is the customer facing problem with.
    2. What is the status of help downloaded for the same product (CS5 or CS6 in Adobe Help Manager)
    3. Is the user able to see downloaded help in the above mentioned folders
Let me know if you have more queries.
    Regards,
    Sandeep
