PCMCIA firewire adapter not working ....

with my LACie 40GB USB/Firewire mobile hard drive..
I previously posted that my TiBook 550 firewire port & the Lacie firewire
port are fried. I was hinted that the Tibook firewire port may have been
the culprit but not certain.
I bought a 3rd party PCMCIA firewire adapter IEEE 1394A
Here's the issue it works with a new firewire 3.5"drive enclosure which has
it's own power supply.
With the LAcie it runs off the power from the TiBook when I use the USB
port.
Is there a specific PCMCIA fire wire adapter I need to run the firewire bus
power of the LAcie drive?
I'm at a lost and REALLY behind in backing up data because of this.
Need help thanks ~A~

Thank you for clarifying this to me.
I went to the Apple store today, and not much was told except to buy
a new logic board!
My new 2.5" firewire enclosure does have a power supply port.
So looks like that seems to be my answer for now.
It does seem odd to have a power suppy for something portable, but
I guess when you blow firewire ports and need to go through a PCMCIA
adapter that's my best option.
The one thing I am curious about is that the LAcie firewire port & Tibook firewire port though the harddrive isn't mounting on my desktop still brings power to the drive.
Do you think on the "off the wall" chance that by adding a external power supply to the "injured" LAcie drive that it may allow my Tibook to mount
on the desktop?
A strange inquiry but worth a shot!
What do you think? ~A~
To add to Hardy's advice: Some pocket-sized FW drives
come with their own AC adapters. Others can use such
an adapter, but it's an optional accessory. Others
have no provision for connecting an external power
adapter to them, and must draw their power from the
FireWire bus. They can't do that when the FireWire
bus is on a PC card, unless the PC card adapter
itself came with a short auxiliary cord to connect it
to one of the host computer's USB or FireWire ports.
That cord is provided to draw power from one of those
ports for any bus-powered devices that are connected
through the PC Card adapter.
Therefore, you will need to do one of several things,
listed roughly in order of preference:
1. Use the AC adapter that came with your pocket
FireWire drive, if one did;
2. Buy such an adapter, if you didn't get one with it
but it can use one;
3. Use the auxiliary power cord that came with your
PC Card FireWire adapter, if one did;
4. Buy a different FireWire enclosure for your pocket
hard drive that allows the use of external power, and
comes with its own AC adapter.
5. Buy another PC card adapter that comes with an
auxiliary power cord.
#4 is preferable to #5 because it's certain to work,
not because it's necessarily less expensive.
Note that some portable hard drives need more power
than the USB or FireWire bus in a Powerbook can
supply. It sounds ridiculous — why make a portable
drive that requires you to carry an AC adapter with
it? — but it's true. This is why #5 above may not
work: even with an auxiliary power cord in use, your
drive may overdraw the power budget of the port to
which the cord is connected, and you'll be right back
where you are now.

  • Mini-Displayport to DVI adapter not working, but Mini-Displayport to VGA and Thunderbolt work fine

Mini-Displayport to DVI adapter not working, but Mini-Displayport to VGA and Thunderbolt work fine.
This is a brand new MacBook Pro (15-inch, mid-2012) just received.  I suspect that this is a hardware problem as:
The mini-displayport to DVI adapter and the external monitor that I am utilizing connect and operate just fine using my older MacBook Pro (mid-2010) with the same OS.
The new MacBook Pro powers the external monitor with a mini-displayport to VGA adapater without issue.
The new MacBook Pro powers an Apple Thunderbolt display without issue.
Both MacBook Pro's are running OSX Lion 10.7.4.
The only combination which does not work is the mini-displayport to DVI adapater used in conjunction with the brand new MacBook Pro (mid-2012).
All adapters and components (mini-displayport adapters) are Apple retail adapter.
I have tried several external monitors, including my Dell U2412m.
When I connect the mini-displayport to DVI adapater to the new MacBook Pro (mid-2012), nothing happens. The external monitor reports "no signal" and attempts to go into sleep mode.  Using the "Detect displays" button has no effect, even when used multiple times.  Rebooting does not help, nor does resetting the SMC or PRAM.
Any other suggestions before I take it to the Genius Bar?

I turns out that the logic board of my MacBook Pro was faulty (despite being brand new).
I took it to the Apple Store, presented the problem, and one of the Tech's came to the same conclusion that I had -- hardware failure.  Phone support was no help in the matter (and even told me that what I was trying to do wasn't a supported option, which is rediculous).  However, the Genius Bar did take care of the problem, and my MacBook Pro was back to me with a replaced logic board within a few days.
    Hope that htis helps.

  • G5 dvi to vga adapter not working

DVI to VGA adapter not working with my G5 Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC. I am trying to use a VGA Monitor but can not get a signal. I also am using a Dell with a DVI Input and that works fine using a DVI Cable from my G5 to the Dell u2410.

    Bad adapter?
The G5 ports are DVI-I. Any good DVI-I to VGA adapter should be fine.

  • StarTech Adapter not working with Dell Inspiron 15, model 3521

Side Note: I wrote a reply to a thread that was from 2013. I do apologize because the link was sent to me by my bf and I did not realize how old it was. Since my reply has to be approved I can't delete it.
Current Issue: StarTech Adapter not working with Dell Inspiron 15 model 3521
I bought my Dell laptop last year and at first I did not realize that it had only one audio jack (combo, as the specifications manual says), I only noticed when I was trying to plug in my Ozone Rage ST headset.
I searched online threads and found out that I needed an adapter and most people mentioned Headset Buddy. I couldn't find any adapters for sale in my country (or employees didn't really know what I was talking about) and since Headset Buddy is a bit expensive, I decided to try StarTech Headset adapter for headsets with separate headphone/microphone plugs - 3.5mm 4 position to 2x 3 position 3.5mm M/F www.amazon.com/.../ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top.
It arrived today and let me tell you that I can't make it work. I can hear everything but I can't get the external mic to work or even be detected. I have always used my headset (mostly for gaming) and I prefer to use my external mic rather than the internal one. First I connected my headphone and mic jacks to the adapter and only after that did I connect it to the laptop combo jack. I also tried vice-versa. It didn't work, regardless of the order. I even tried with a different headset and it still didn't work. What else can I do?
I have also found a thread on Dell forums saying that Headset Buddy doesn't even work on Dell Inspiron 15, model 3521. So since it doesn't work and I'm assuming StarTech doesn't, either, what am I to do/buy?! I am getting extremely frustrated and I'm very disappointed with Dell because the brand should have included with the laptop a proper working adapter for these situations and not make its customers buy an extra accessory to make whatever working gear they already had function. It just doesn't make sense to me! Either make the changes work properly or simply don't touch anything. I spent some of my savings on this laptop which, overall, is great but now I am being forced to spend more on an item to allow me to use my headset. I am running out of options here and even Dell can't seem to tell its customers with 100% certainty what really works for this specific model.
If I can't make the adapter work, I just hope I can return it, otherwise I'll end up with no refund and with a piece of equipment I have no other use for!
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
This is the first time I was forced to buy adapters such as these so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if there's anything else I can do to make it work. When I plug the adapter to my Dell, the laptop presents me with several options such as: headphones, headphone, speakers, skull candy headphones, etc (maybe some may have different names but since I see them in Portuguese, I'm not quite sure how they appear for someone who has the computer in English), I have picked different options and it still doesn't work, the only noticeable changes are sound quality related, I guess.

  • My hdmi adapter not working anymore, no physical damage. Solution?

My hdmi adapter not working anymore, no physical damage. Solution?
Strange is, that i used it several times, it worked fine. Then wothout any reason (like software updete, etc) it just stopped workung, no sync.
I have not changed any parameters of my TV or Beamer.
    Hardware:
Ipad 2, Apple Ipad HDMI Adapter,  Samsung P2770FH, Optoma HD 65.
    Thanks for any help.

I've only used mine a couple of times without any problem, but due to the thinness of the iPad, care has to be taken in inserting the adapter.  Slightly wrong angle and it won't go it.
I had a laptop a few years ago where the USB connector failed. I had it replaced under the warantee,  The service man told me it was not an uncommom failure on a laptop due to people "torquing" the USB socket while inserting/removing USB items.  I have much the same feeling when inserting either the charger cord or my HDMI adapter.
From your description, unless the HDMI adapter failed internally, it sounds like the socket is causing the problem.  A few days ago we watch our first movie from the iPad via my ATV2 and "Air Play".  Worked great so I don't plan on using the HDMI adapter much at all in the future.  Yes, it is a $99 solution, but it works for me.  Of course, I already had the ATV2.  I doubt if I would buy one just for this abiliity.  If nothing else, it seems like a trip to the Apple Genius bar is in order for maybe a replacement unit.
However, with iOS 5 coming out with supposedly total mirroring, it might be worth thinking about getting an ATV2.

  • Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter not good for networking?!

    Hi folks,
I have been successfully running a mini Firewire network between my old iMac and my MacPro for several years just using a FW 800 to FW 400 cable.
NOW I bought the new iMac with Thunderbolt and the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter. Unfortunalely it was impossible for me to set up the network again. Is it right that the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter will not work the same as the "pure" Firewire connection before, because of the different hardware or internal protocols? Do I really have to switch over to a standard ethernet connection with additional hardware like router hub or switch and forget my cool and so easy Firewire network?
I read about that problem here:
    macworld.com/article/2016066/migration-assistant-thunderbolt-firewire-adapter-hu h.html
    That would be a shame....

Be certain you have inserted the cable plug into the computer jack so that essentially ALL of the metal end has disappeared inside the computer jack.

  • Belkin Firewire Hub Not working

I purchased a Belkin Firewire 6-Port Hub unit and plugged all of my firewire gear into it and it is not working. The unit is glowing green and is connected to my iMac so that is all good.
I read the back of the package and it says the following....
To use the hub your computer must feature a built in firewire host adapter or be equipped with a firewire host adapter upgrade card.
Does the Intel Core 2 Duo based iMac have either one of these? Could this be my problem?

I had one external hard drive plugged in (with its own power supply), my Digi002 Rack plugged in (with its own power supply) and a cable to my camcorder. I turned my hard drive on and the icon would not appear. I just unplugged everything and now the hard drive works. I guess I will just take the belkin back or sell it on amazon.
I have a belkin usb hub and that thing works great! I guess the firewire hubs are kind of finiky.
There really was not exact place to plug the firewire cable into the hub that connects to the computer, unlike the usb hub. I thought that a bit odd. Perhaps I pluggede the cable from the computer into the wrong spot on the hub so the hub was not recognized by the computer?

  • DVI to Video Adapter Not Working...

    Hi,
I bought this thingy to view video from my Dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5 on a Panasonic HDTV, using one of its s-video inputs. The video is blank when I switch to that input. I tried using the "Detect Displays" in the Displays preference panel. I do get a picture, but it's heavily distorted no matter what resolution I've tried - it's treated as a VGA display. Composite output from the adapter does not work at all.
The video card is a NVIDIA GeForce 6600LE (came with the computer - two DVI outputs). Apple claims this adapter works on Power Mac G5 with DVI port, but I don't think it does. I also tried hooking it up to a VCR as Apple claims you can do, but no luck there either.
Any advice or alternatives outside of Apple TV appreciated.

Thanks for the technical information. That was very helpful. I took the adapter to my local Apple Store (even tho I didn 't buy it there) and asked them to test it, but they couldn't get to for a couple of hours. But, they gladly gave me a new one to try at no charge.
As before, I plugged it into port 2 of the graphics card with an s-video cable to the tv. No success - except the picture was completely blank on the TV instead of distorted like before. Port 1 was occupied with a VGA monitor. I shut down the computer, TV, and unplugged both ports. I then moved the adapter from port 2 to port 1 and left port 2 open, meaning the VGA monitor wasn't connected to the graphics card at all.
I turned the TV back on and restarted the computer. Lo and behold - after the booting process was done, my desktop appeared on the TV. I shut down the computer again and reconnected the VGA monitor. Ta-dah! - I now have dual monitors.
As a further test, I hooked up the s-video from the adapter to my DVD recorder and recorded the video output from a full screen QT video to its built-in hard drive. That was successful as well. The only problem is that there is a minimal black border around the video since I was not able to pick a resolution for the TV that fills the entire screen. I may need to play with TV's aspect settings to get rid of the border, or crop it out later.
All that's left is to capture the audio and sync it with the video, then output to my format of choice. There's my fair use copy. The quality of the video won't be as good as the original, but what the heck - I'm the only one using it anyway.
Apple should find a way to convince TV and movie studios to sell their stuff on iTunes Store without DRM, at a higher price - like EMI is doing with their music. I would gladly pay the difference just so I could convert and burn my videos to DVD with iDVD or DVD Studio Pro.

  • Archive file with errors in sender file adapter not working! please help!

    Hi Experts,
I have a file to RFC scenario. the input is a XML file. I have setup the flag in sender file adapter channel for archiving the input files with errors. But it is not working.
For testing I have used an invalid xML file for example without the main XML tag. I have also tested with a MSWORD file saved with.xml extension. But in both the cases the files are not getting archived.
My archive location permissions are fine and in fact normal archive operation is happening. That is, if I select the processing mode as "Archive" and gave the Archive directory then files are getting archived. The problem is only with the "Archive faulty source files" option.
What am I missing? DO I need to do some more configurations?
What are the prerequisites if any for this option?
    How to test this?
Please help me! I will be greatfull to you all!

  • Lightning HDMI Adapter not working with iOS 6.1.2

I have an iPhone 5 which was updated from 6.0.2 to 6.1.2 recently and the Lightning HDMI adapter stopped working altogether for video mirroring; was wondering if anyone has the same situation/any solution for this?
I also have an iPad retina generation which is at 6.1.2, and the Lightning HDMI adapter is not working for it as well.
I've tried replacing HDMI cables, rebooting the iPhone with the cable plugged in, and plugging out/in several times with the charger in/out. The adapter works, cause when I plug it in; I see the top bar flash for a bit... but no dice on the video mirroring to my TV.

I also have this problem and am very unhappy with the way Apple is handling it. Called today to enquire on when the fix will be available and was told it is a software issue that could be fixed if we paid $35.00 to talked through process on the phone. Highly disappointed with Apple, why should it cost me money for them to fix there own issue. Since they are aware of the issue the least they can do it posted the information for the fix online @ no charge.
If I wanted crap service I could have gotten a phone from anyone. Reconsidering purchasing a 5 on next upgrade.

  • Help! DVI to Video adapter not working!

    Hello,
I bought a brand new DVI to video adapter and it's not working. I plug it in and it shows the start-up screen, but it's split screen and it's in black and white. Then, it goes into the black and white lines, not showing what's coming out of the computer at all. I've tried doing this on three separate TV's and none work. Can anyone help?

Can you give us your video card specs and the link to the product you are using.

  • Mini Display port DVI adapter not working on Thunderbolt Port

For some time I've been using a mini display port to DVI adapter on an slightly older MBP to connect to my HD TV.  I recently purchased a MBP with a Thunderbolt port and when I try to connect it to my TV via my mini-display-port-DVI adapter things are not working properly.  The MBP is seeing the Philips TV but it isn't listing all the display modes and I'm not able to send any video to it.  Does the Thunderbolt port require a new display port to DVI adapter?

Let me be clearer; I've got the MDP-DVI adapter connected to a cable that is DVI on one end and HDMI on the other.  I've got both laptops so I can compare side by side.  I plug in the MDP-DVI adapter to the old laptop and all works well; I plug it into the new laptop and while the laptop does see the TV, the display modes for it are all 1080p which is wrong I don't see any desktop image on the TV unlike when I plug it into the older laptop.  This is very disappointing as I expect things to just work with Apple products.
