PCMCIA-GPIB Card with Linux ?

We would like to run LabVIEW + PCMCIA GPIB Card Ni-488.2 on a laptop under Linux. I know LabView provides a linux version, but we would need an appropriate driver for the PCMCIA-card. I found hints on a PCI-GPIB driver, but not for the PCMCIA version. Is there something available? We are currently running SuSE 7.0 on the laptop, but it would be no problem to switch to RH 7.1.

It is surprising to see that after all these years of expertise from NI, there is currently no way to have GPIB running on a Linux laptop.
NI provides no drivers for the two possible laptop solutions: USB or PCMCIA.
Given the widespread use of Linux in research labs, such a lack of support is rather disappointing. I can't imaging that writing such a driver would be more work than a computer science student project.
At least the basic communication/read/write functionalities with no polling and handshakes

language? FutureBasic claims to support the NI drivers on NI's PCI and
NuBus cards.

GPIB communication with GPIB (NI PCMCIA-GPIB)card in Visual Basic

I have a old program in Visual Basic which works fine in windows 98 using the desktop, but using my laptop with windows 2000 on it and NI PCMCIA-GPIB card it fails to communicate and running the program does not recognize the sendIFC command. I am new to VB, so can someone tell me what am I missing here. thanks

Is the PCMCIA card recognized by the NI-488.2 driver on your laptop? Are you able to communicate from Measurement and Automation with your instrument? What do you mean it does not recognize the sendIFC command? Does Visual Basic give you a runtime or a compile time error? Are you using the latest version of the driver? (Usually 2.1 unless you're on 95 or NT with your card)
You can try out the Visual Basic language examples in the 488.2 directory under Languages as these will let you know whether or not the driver is installed correctly.

Max Not Detecting PCMCIA GPIB Card

I'm having trouble getting NI MAX to detect that I have a PCMCIA GPIB Card in the computer. The C-Drive under hardware manager knows it's in the slot and says it's working fine. I tried to uninstall the GPIB Card so I could reinstall it but it won't let me.
I also tried adding hardware to MAX and selecting the PCMCIA card but it says that it can't be added.
I'm using the latest versions of GPIB, VISA, and MAX software that I can on a Windows 2000 computer.

When you say MAX is having trouble detecting the card, what exactly is happening? Do you see the card in MAX, but then you can't communicate with it? Does it show up with an error, or does it not show up at all? Could you give me the exact error message that you see. Are you using this on a laptop, or are you using a PCI-PCMCIA converter on a desktop? Does this happen on multiple computers? And just to verify, what version of NI-488.2 are you using? Hit <F5> in MAX to refresh the window and see if it shows up then. You could also try reinstalling the NI-488.2 driver, to see if it helps. Please let me know the answers to the questions above, and we can go from there to try to get this issue resolved. Thanks!

How do I get driver software for PCMCIA-GPIB card?

I have purchased a used card that has Windows/DOS software. How do I get driver software for Windows ME or Windows 2000?

That would depend on what you bought. Check with the manufacturer and see if they have the drivers you need.
We have some PCMCIA GPIB cards here from a manufacturer that does not support that card anymore. The only GPIB commands that I could get to work in LabVIEW were the old direct GPIB commands and even then, we had to rebuild a laptop with windoze 95.

Problems with PCMCIA-GPIB card

Hi all
I am using a PCMCIA-GPIB with driver version 2.2 on a Windows XP with a PCI-to-PCMCIA Adapter from Ricoh (device manager says: Ricoh R/RL/RT/RC/5C475II,R5C520 or compatible cardbus controller).
The Win XP detects the card without any problems and there are no resource conflicts.
However, I cannot communicate with GPIB devices and the NI-488.2 Troubleshooting Wizard says:
1. NI-488.2 Software Presence = verified
2. GPIB Hardware Presence =
And then a new screen: "The trouble shooting wizard has detect that no GPIB interfaces are configured on your system"
Can someone help me? There are no resource conflicts and I have also tried changing the PCI slot. The same problem also occurred when I installed the card in an
other computer.

I have tested a RICOH PCMCIA to PCI Adapter card. The PCMCIA to PCI Adapter card was tested using different operating systems (Win2000,XP,98,95) and using a Micron computer PIII 650 processor. When testing under the XP environment, with service pack 1, NI's device drivers Version 1.7 failed to load. (Code 10) Ni's driver version 1.7 was then removed and NI's device driver Version 2.2 was loaded. I did not experience any commutation problem as long as I used the standard NI calls. I did experience a problem with NI’s IBDIAG function call which is not supported under Version 2.2.
I would recommend that you get the latest service pack for XP and NI’s device driver Version 2.2.

PC-GPIB card with 0.8.2 drivers in Linux

I have a PCI-GPIB card and I am trying to install it in a computer with Suse 8.0. I run the INSTALL script and the driver compiles but it doesn't detect the card and when it is called it gives the following errors:

Hello-
These actually look like linking errors. It appears that the compiler is not linking in the proper libraries when linking the program to create the driver. google.com or SUSE could probably give more help about how to overcome these errors. Try doing a search for +pci_read_config_word +"unresolved symbol" on google.com. There is probably a library that the compiler should be linking, but it is not configured properly.

Recommended PCMCIA wireless cards for Linux 2.4.20?

I am interested in any suggestions for Cisco (or other!) PCMCIA IEEE 802.11b wireless cards that are compatible with Linux 2.4.20, i.e., an upgrade of the Linux kernel is a last option!
The source files for the driver must also be available. It is preferable if the cards are IEEE 802.11g/n ready also, but this is not essential.

I've always just used the win32 driver with the NDIS wrapper in Linux. While it's not my favorite option, it works.
As for driver sources, if you do find an open source wifi driver for a major chipset like Atheros, let us all know.. :)

Contec GPIB cards and Linux

Hi,
I am currently using Contec GPIB(F) cards for a number of different
testers. I am interested in running Linux on the PC that the test
equipment is hooked up to. Does any one know if the Contec cards are
compatible with NI488.2 driver that exist for Linux??

I tried to install two drivers, one from the Linux

They are both supposed to work under linux 2.2.x,
but the installation failed in both cases at a

How can I use the instrument toolbox in MATLAB 6.1 to contol the PCI-GPIB card under Linux?

I'm trying to use the PCI-GPIB controller to control lab equipment through MATLAB 6.1 (R12.1) under Linux. MATLAB's instrument toolbox seems to integrate with NI's board, but the MATLAB documentation says it requires the installation of a driver. I've downloaded the linux gpib driver, and I'm able to run the associated utilities (ibconf, ibic, ibsta), but MATLAB cannot interface to it. For example,

The specified VENDOR adaptor could not be found.
Where can I find a MATLAB driver and how can I install it?

Communicate by NI-GPIB card with an instrument that was designed especially for HP-GPIB

I have an instrument (Data Link Test Set by Apogee Labs) that has GPIB interface and a book of commands.
I have a NI-488.2 card and I try to send commands with the MAX. The device is identified but it respond to the commands by blinking its display and strange hex answer.
The manufacturer said they have no problem like that, but they tested their GPIB interface only with a HP card and not NI card. This is a big problem for me, because it's all part of a deal, and the customer want to have it with NI.
What possible solutions do I have in order to communicate this instrument with NI card, though it was designed only for HP card.

GPIB and HPIB are the same thing. They are different names for the IEE 488.2 communication standard. The 488.2 specification is an extension of 488.1 and it is backwards compatible. IEEE 488.2 uses the same electrical specs and low-level states machines. You are probably refering to IEEE 488.1 as HPIB.
IEEE 488.2 defines a set of required commands. MAX uses the ID query command *IDN? to retrieve the instrument ID string. With a non-488.2 compliant instrument the interface is capable of sending and receiving information to the device, but in the particular case of the MAX 'scan for instruments' option the instrument won't recognize the *IDN?. This is way you are getting a error message in the instrument. In MAX you are detecting the instrument
, but it says that it didn't respond to the *IDN? query.
To test the device, review the instrument's documentation and determine the ID query command (if any). It might be something like 'ID?'. Then use the MAX 'communicate with instrument' utility or the interactive control (ibic) to send the correct command to the instruments.
The botton line: you should be able to communicate with this instrument.

PCI-GPIB Card with Visual Basic gives blue screen and re-boots PC

The application makes the "ibsic" call then "ibln" to find devices on the bus. Running the VB program the first time is fine, but if you end the program and re-run a second time, you get a blue screen and the PC reboots when the program reaches the lines that make the first call to the NI-488 functions. If you close out of VB and then restart VB, everything is OK again.
