Pentax K-5

Cannot open PEF files and I am forced to use DNG. Looks like we have gone back in time with no support. Please add Pentax K-5 support asap.

Oodini wrote:

How do you come to that questionable conclusion, Oodini?  Where do you think you read that?
You can't base that on the size of the file alone, as an uncompressed DNG file will of course be larger than a corresponding compressed raw file.
I can assure you that the DNGs from my K20D are absolutely undemosaiced raw DNG files and in no way "linearized".  I assume you do understand the concept of linear files—which raw files are.

  • How to get Aperture and iPhoto to use Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively

Using some techniques that I found in various places in these forums, I am going to give step-by-step instructions to get Aperture and iPhoto to recognize Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively.
Note: This worked for me using 10.4.6 with the latest iPhoto 06 and Aperture updates. I do NOT know if this will work on older versions of OS X, iPhoto, or Aperture.
Note: If you also use a Pentax *ist DS camera, these instructions will probably disable support for that particular device due to the modifications made to a system file. Only complete these instructions if you want to use a *ist DL camera.
** These instructions involve modifying system level files using a HEX editor. If you are not comfortable with this, do NOT attempt to do this or you could kill your system. Remember, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. These steps worked great for me but follow at your own risk!! **
    Ok, lets begin...
    1) Download this great patch by macintosh_tech
    http://idisk.mac.com/macintosh_tech-Public
This patch contains an updated raw.plist file which includes the RAW information for the *ist DL. This patch also contains an updated libRaw.dylib file and an updated Raw Presets file for Aperture.
** Do NOT copy the libRaw.dylib file from this patch to the folder listed in the patch Read_Me. This file did not work on my Intel-based Mac and crashed my system!!
I was able to modify my original libRaw.dylib file using a HEX editor to get it to work on my system. Instructions for this modification will follow.
    2) Open the .dmg of the patch in a Finder window
    3) Open a new finder window and browse to /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ImageIO.fra mework/Resources
*4) Backup the libRaw.dylib and Raw.plist files. Copy them to a safe location. For extra safety, you can just copy the whole Resources folder to a safe location (Make sure that you COPY it and dont MOVE it)*
    5) Right-click the libRaw.dylib file and select "Get Info". Look at the bottom of the info window and expand the "Ownership & Permissions" tab. In this section, expand the "Details" tab. If the lock icon is in the locked position, click it to unlock it. Change "Owner" to your user name. If requested, enter your system password at this point. Close the info window. This step lets you modify the libRaw.dylib file.
    6) Complete step 5 for the Raw.plist file.
    7) Copy the Raw.plist file from the "Place In System Folder" folder from the patch to the Resources folder. It will ask you if you wnt to overwrite the existing file. Click "Replace".
    8) Open a new finder window and browse to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder.
    * 9) Backup the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file *
    10) Copy the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file from the "Place In Home Directory" folder from the patch to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder. Click "replace" if it asks you.
    11) Here's the tricky part. Download a HEX editor if you don't have one. I used 0xED. It is free and can be downloaded from
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29521
    12) Open the libRaw.dylib file from the Resources folder in your HEX editor.
Note: This is your original libRaw.dylib file from your /System/Library/...../Resources/ folder, NOT the file from the patch.
Use the Find function and search for the string "Pentax *ist DS". Make sure you are using "Search Type: Text" (or equivilent in your editor) and that you use proper case. When you find this string, change the "S" in the "DS" to an "L". The string should now look like "Pentax *ist DL". Use the "Find Next" function to find the next instance of "Pentax *ist DS". Again, change the "S" to an "L". There should be two total instances that you need to change. Save the file and exit the editor.
    13) Open Disk Utility and repair permissions. This will set the raw.plist and libRaw.dylib files back to their original permissions.
    14) Reboot the system.
    15) You should now be able to view .PEF files natively in Aperture and iPhoto. I appologize in advance for any typos. Let me know how this works, as this is my first tutorial of this nature.
    Macbook 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It would appear that my last post was a moot point as the 10.4.7 update adds support for the *ist DL. It's nice to have it biult into the operating system now.

  • Video with Pentax Kr

Hello everyone, I have a problem with iPhoto after upgrading to Mavericks, after the update I can no longer import or play videos with my Pentax Kr. Before the update everything worked perfectly. Can you tell me how can I do? thanks

    version 9.5.1
I have problems when I import video from your camera or SD card. During the import hangs. If I try to play the video from iPhoto (even old ones). appears black screen or a still image of the video is not the player to play.

  • Can no longer play my videos (.avi) from my Pentax Camera.

    Please HELP.
I have been using my Pentax Digital point and shoot camera since 2008. I had no problems watching my videos (.avi) on I photo. They would upload and play as normal. Then all of a sudden about one year ago. They no longer play. The videos on my iphoto uploaded since them don't play, as well as the older ones. Now they dont even upload.
I have contacted pentax for support and they have no idea how it interfaces with iphoto. They suggestes VLO media browser. But id rather not have two diffrent applications for my media.
    What should I try?
Does Iphoto no longer recognize .avi??

Did this start after you upgraded to Snow Leopard?  Do you have Quicktime Player 7 installed on your Mac?  It would be in the Applications/Utilities folder if you do.  If not then download it from here: QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3.

Greetings from a Photoshop Newbie. I need a computer, preferably a Mac laptop, with some serious processing power. I take photos with a Pentax 645Z; files are 50MB raw. I upload from Adobe Bridge and manipulate the photo, sometimes turning them into files in excess of 250MB. I cannot resize as the large files are needed for enlargements. Have all sorts of problems trying to manipulate, add effects and saving most large files. I need some serious processing power. Can anyone suggest what Mac i should purchase? I thank you in advance for your help :-)

It sounds as if you're having some system-related problems now, unrelated to processing power as such. In particular, a buggy video driver can cause everything to slow to a crawl.
Medium format files are big, true, but not so big as to cause significant slowdowns on a normally functioning and reasonably current computer. A laptop will always be slower than a well-equipped desktop system, though. Mac vs PC plays no part in this, performance is unrelated to platform.
Bottlenecks are different in ACR and Photoshop, so that should give you a clue. ACR is computing-intensive and mostly limited by CPU speed. Photoshop, however, is mostly bandwidth-intensive and mainly limited by memory and disk throughput. It's also sensitive to GPU issues.

  • How to: DNG colors from pentax camera are completely different in camera raw compared to pentax soft

Hi all, i have a problem.
I always used adobe camera raw to manage RAW files. I find it really fast and friendly compared to many other programs (i mean lightroom, pentax digital camera utility, DxO optics pro, Silkypix, etc.). It has no rivals, on my macbook pro it is absolutely faster than others.
BUT i found a lot of differences comparing colors (not just tone, but definition inside an object with similar colors) from a DNG using camera raw vs pentax digital camera utility 4. It is a know problem by pentax people. You can check (without the camera) the problem here (see the colorcheker chart): http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxkx/page14.asp
I can post examples of what i mean speaking of "definition inside an object with similar colors"...
I always use the "embedded" camera profile in camera raw, finding it more similar to the pentax software. The adobe standard is really different.
Is there a way i can bypass this issue? using pentax digital software is really boring…it's unfriendly, SLOW, with bad light adjustments and interface.
I tried opening the DNG with pentax software and converting it to tiff: the colors are ok, but you lose a lot adjusting light etc.
    thank you all

    > I don't know anything, and haven't read anything, about the unique characteristics of Pentax DNG files.
firmware in cameras that can create raw files in .DNG format (Pentax, Samsung, Ricoh, Leica) will write so called DNG profile in those raw files (see Sandy's comments) - those profiles are not identical to what Adobe creates to use w/ ACR/LR, but they also can be used by Adobe raw converters (you will get a little different colors)... you can extract those profiles from native DNG raw files for example using Adobe DNG profile editor... in addition, Pentax cameras (modern) can create raw files either in their own PEF format or in DNG format and Pentax suppied software (DCU) can in fact create DNG files from PEF files and unlike Adobe DNG converter DCU will do that w/o discarding any information and it will write Pentax DNG profile in those converted DNG files.

  • How to open PEF (pentax raw) in Bridge CS4

Cannot open Pentax RAW files (PEF) in Bridge CS4. Any help is appreciated. Canon RAW does open.

I don't see that listed, is it really new?  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
CS4 will only support camera raw in the 5.x series.  You either have to upgrade or convert images to DNG format.  THis is a free program from Adobe.

  • Bridge CS3 Does Not Display Pentax PEF files

    Hi,
I am running Vista and have Bridge CS3 installed on my Notebook. I updated Bridge to v 2.1.1.9 and have added Camera RAW 4.5. My problem is that Bridge does not display Pentax RAW files from a K20 camera (its on the supported list). DNG and JPG files show correctly. Bridge only shows a PEF Icon for each image. When you double click on the Icon, the file opens in Camera RAW 4.5 correctly and also in Photoshop CS3.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to see the PEF images in Bridge?
    Thanks
    Keith

Revisit the download page, look at the instructions, and make sure you unzipped ACR to the correct folder, and you don't have an ACR in two places.

  • Camera RAW image support for Pentax K100D

    Hi,
Firstly, let me just say I have a MacBook Pro which came preloaded with Tiger. A month or so ago I upgraded to Leopard and I have applied all the available Apple software update.
I recently got a Pentax K100D digital SLR camera capable of taking images in RAW format (the pentax saves these with a .PEF file extension) and I have been trying to view these images in Leopard. I read the article below, which says that Leopard provides system-level support for the Pentax K100D camera RAW format.
*Digital camera RAW formats supported by Mac OS X 10.5*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835
Now, my problem is that I cannot seem to be able to open the .PEF files with neither Quick Look, Preview, iPhoto or Aperture. Basically, none of these programs seem to be able to display my .PEF files. Aperture says 'unsupported image format'.
I have installed the software that came with my Pentax (i.e. Pentax Photo Browser and Pentax Photo Laboratory) and these applications can display the .PEF images just fine. For what it's worth, I installed this software before I upgraded to Leopard.
If I right-click on a .PEF file in Finder, the only programs listed in the Open context menu are the above two Pentax applications.
So, what am I missing? Clearly something seems to be screwy in my Leopard set up. Is there some way to 'repair' the RAW image support in Leopard??
I would appreciate any help in fixing this as I would really like to start working with RAW images in Aperture and iPhoto.
Finally, just be aware that I am not an experienced Mac user. I have always used Windows until now and so... if you have a fix for this I would really appreciate a slightly more elaborate response.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddie

I have done a little more research on this...
As it turns out, my camera is a Pentax K100D Super - not a K100D. The K100D Super is not listed as one of the supported camera RAW formats in the aforementioned article. So I guess this means that my camera is as yet unsupported. Sigh...

  • Flagging Pentax Images in Adobe Bridge

I just replaced my Pentax K10D with a K20D to act as a backup to my K7 since its features better parallel those of the K7. When I started to edit, in Adobe Bridge CS4, my first pictures taken with the K20D, I found that I could not set any labels (red, yellow, green, etc.) or ratings (1 star, 2 stars, etc.) to them. Is there some option set in the camera and carried over in the metadata which would prevent such modification or ranking? Or is this a Bridge problem requiring a setup or option change?
(I have also posted this in the Pentax forums.)

Good thought, but I don't think that is the issue. I can label my Pentax K7 photos with this version of Bridge, and it is a newer camera. I can also flag the K20D photos on my laptop, the very ones I cannot flag on my desktop (the reason for the first posting). I had the problem on my desktop this morning before going off to my day job but didn't have time to explore further. I posted my query at lunch time thinking there might be a simple explanation like an option not set correctly. I did further testing once I got back this evening. I am beginning to think it's my version of XP Professional on my desktop which is giving me a variety of different problems (right-clicking on a file in Windows Explorer shuts down the application, for instance). It's going to be upgraded to Windows 7 shortly; but I'm living with it for now. As an IT professional for over 40 years, I have seen my share of really weird software problems. This one is probably not worth any further effort until I make the change to Windows 7. Thanks for your response.

  • Pentax K-x calibration with Camera Raw 3.1, and calibration updates

The Pentax K-x will save its raw files in either DNG (Adobe) format, or PEF (Pentax) format. Until Camera Raw 3.1 was released, I had my K-x writing DNG files, since there was no support in Apperture for PEF files. With Camera Raw 3.1, the K-x is now explicitly included, so that I could switch to PEF format.
My initial sense after doing that was that the PEF files were coming in darker than the DNG files had. But when I switched back to DNG, those were darker than I thought they should be, too. Since I had DNG files that had been processed with Camera Raw 3.0, I went back and made new versions, processing those with Camera Raw 3.1. Those, too, were much darker than the same files processed with the earlier raw developer. For examples, this picture is from a K-x DNG master processed with Camera Raw 3.0, while this picture is from the same master, reprocessed with Camera Raw 3.1. I've embedded the histograms shown in the inspector in each. Each of those has no adjustments applied. The JPEG image produced in camera (I shoot Raw+JPEG) is much closer to the brighter 3.0 image than the darker 3.1 image.
I've seen one other report of similar behaviour with K-x images in here, but that took the approach that the solution was to revert to Camera Raw 3.0, for now, at least. I hate to move backward, particularly if it locks me out of any future updates. So, does Apple have a history of recalibrating cameras that they've already released Raw support for? Might this change in a future Camera Raw update, or is this likely to be what they alway render for the K-x?
I can get the new style images looking okay (in fact, they seem to have better noise characteristics) with a good deal of adjustment, but not if I confine my adjustments to the Raw Processing brick. There, Boost and Hue Boost are both maxxed out by default, already. If I add adjustments in the exposure brick, and maybe a few others, I can probably get a general set of adjustments that will work as a default for this camera, but how common is it to have to do that?

Aperture 3 mostly seems to work fine for me, at the moment. There were some issues with importing my iPhoto Library that I've mostly worked out, and some quirks that were fixed by the 3.0.1 update. I'm not saying it's all better, but it's not the doom that one might imagine reading some of the threads here, either.
I only had the trial version of Aperture 2, though. I only got the K-x in late December, and before that, I had no need for raw processing. The software Pentax supplies is UGLY, though, and iPhoto wasn't cutting it, so I tried the Aperture 2 trial and the Lightroom 3 beta. I concluded that I much preferred Aperture to Lightroom, but I wasn't going to buy Aperture 2 when all the speculation was that Aperture 3 was right around the corner, or not coming at all. Since my Aperture 2 trial had run out, it wasn't a hard choice to buy Aperture 3 as soon as it came out. I do find I use the editing brushes more than I imagined I would, and I'm very happy that it now directly supports my camera - I've switched to shooting PEF raw instead of DNG raw.

  • Can't open Pentax PEF files over 16MB

    Photoshop Elements 5
    ACR 4.1
    Windows XP Home
Hi - when I try to open a Pentax PEF file from a K10D using PSE5, and that file is over 16MB in size, I get the following message from PSE:
"Could not complete your request because the
file-format module cannot parse the file."
The s/w supplied with the camera can open these files without a problem. If anybody has any info on this, or a possible solution, I'd appreciate hearing it!
    Thanks!

Thomas - Thanks! Apologies for not getting back sooner. I had thought any messages here would get sent to me via email (the earlier ones did)!
I haven't touched any of these files with Pentax software, in fact with any software, before bringing them into ACR. They are right off the card. And I'm not sure what makes them different, I guess that since PEF is compressed, there are certain images that the f/w cant' compress as much as others, so they end up a bit larger.

  • Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS has compatability with those files.

Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS had compatibility with those files added long ago. Am I missing something?

I agree Terrance. However, I was able to copy other large batches of other files (my music for example) without any issues. The issue only showed up when copying iPhoto's library and/or the photos themselves. This was repeated 3 times; I copied all my other files to the drive then it unmounted on iPhoto. And, as I said, again when I started with a fresh reformat and just iPhoto. That does not seem like hardware to me if it is only happening with one set of files.
I have managed to get the iPhoto library to work on my other external drive. It wanted a rebuild twice and a thumbnail rebuild once. I am now attempting to copy it over to the new HGST internal drive.
Anyone have a suggestion for alternatives to iPhoto? I have aperture, maybe I will try that. But from what I understand, it just shares the same library as iPhoto.
