Permanent fix for disabling safe sleep?

I am frustrated with my MacBook Pro's safe sleep 'feature'. I found the standard way of de-activating it (with the pmset commands), and this works in the short term, but within a few days, either through changing the energy settings or other ways, it always reverts to the original setting of having safe sleep activated.
I found SmartSleep, which allows one to turn off safe sleep without typing the pmset commands, but no luck - after a few days, it will revert to safe sleep.
This is very frustrating, and I'm not sure how to permanently disable this. I have read people suggesting writing a startup script, but I hardly ever reboot my laptop (the only times I have are after typing the pmset commands!) so this wouldn't really solve the problem.
Does anyone know of a permanent fix for this?
Thanks!

The terminal commands are the most permanent way you'll find.
Here's the issue: If you launch Energy Saver and choose ANY of Apple's pre-defined settings like "longer battery life," safe sleep is automatically turned on. To avoid this, you must avoid selecting any of the default power configurations. You can still manually set the sleep and display timers, you just can't use Apple's predefined profiles.
Make sure you delete the virtual memory space reserved for safe sleep after you disable it, too. Here's the link:

this is what you need to do to exclude everything apart from desktop.
on time machine preferences, click on Options
click plus sign, on the new window, click macintosh HD
do a Control + A then deselect users then click okay
go to options again, plus sign, go to users, control +A then deselect your user account

  • Permanent Fix For Some FF4 Oddities?

I just upgraded to FireFox 4, but the minor annoyances are about even with the helpful new features. I've found some about:config fixes for most of the things that irk me, but the problem is that they only seem to last for the current session...when I close FireFox and open it again, it seems as though I need to apply those fixes yet again. And since one such fix is restoring my open tabs whenever I close and reopen my browser, you can imagine how irritating this can be. Is there some way to make these about:config tweaks permanent? What is it that causes them to return to the default each time?
It really baffles me that FF4 defaults to such bizarre habits that FF3 had no issue with, but that's the beauty of customization. However, if I can't get my personal taste tweaks to stick, well...that's when I really come to take issue with the design team's bizarre new decisions. :/

I tried everything on that list and it's not working. Though it seems there's only one preference that's being reset now; I think I changed about three settings in about:config and the others seem to be retaining their new values whenever I close and reopen my browser. The one that isn't is keyboard.url - this now defaults to chrome://browser-region/locale/region.properties while I want it to change and stay changed to http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q= and it just doesn't seem to want to stick. Is there any reasonable explanation for this happening? I'm tired of using the awesomebar to search for things the easy way I did in FF3 such as "the beatles wikipedia' and having it give me this error when it used to direct me to the wikipedia entry of whatever I plugged in. This is an incredibly annoying change for something that used to just work, and I want my changed setting for it to stick permanently.

  • I need a permanent fix for the 'mail server not found' bug (iPad 2 3G)

This problem started happening on my iPad 2 (3G AT&T) about 2 months ago. I found the fix posted numerous times on this forum> delete your mail applications & reinstall them which I did (deleted & reinstalled both my gmail & yahoo accts). Same problem reappeared about 2 wks later so I repeated the fix. It happened a 3rd time this wk so I repeated this fix a THIRD time before I left town a few days ago. Here I am 3 days later & it's back AGAIN.  FYI...ALL the apps are up to date on my iMac & iPad 2.  Can anyone tell me when the fix for this bug is going to be released & what the work-around is?

You have to purchase a data plan to use 3G data but you don't have to purchase a data plan for the iPad to work.  You will have full function of the device without a data plan, as long as you have wifi available.
I also have an iPad2 3G.  I only sign up for 3G service when I need it, i.e. travelling for an extended period.  The rest of the time, I just use wifi at home or whereever I can.

  • Is there a permanent fix for the Acrobat Organizer database damaged issue?

I am constantly applying the fix for this. Is there a known reason this is happening so we are able to prevent it in the future? Adobe obviously knows about the issue, is a fix being worked on?

    Hi amr1119,
Sorry to hear that you are having issues with installing the latest version of iTunes. I understand that you have done a lot of research into this, but was curious if when you tried to launch the iTunes installer file  did you right click and Run as Administrator? Try that and some of the other steps, if needed, in the article below.

  • A Permanent Fix For 3rd party apps that don't launch?

Since Apple has removed my post suggesting this is a bug (and if you've owned iPhones from the get go, you will know that this is). I'm putting a question out to the forum in hopes that besides the already mentioned deleting/updating an app via the store, uninstalling all apps (losing all the app data) and reinstalling et al, has anyone found a way to keep this from happening ever OR a way to back up the particular file that must store authorization data that gets corrupted?

My experience is the same as w7ox for as long or longer. I've had a couple of apps that would occasionally crash on launch, but these were fixed in updates from the developer. One thing to be aware of is that all apps share the same memory, so if one is ill-behaved it can cause others that are perfectly innocent to crash on launch. So the likely situation is that you have one errant app. When an app crashes because a problem in a different app a reboot will fix it, sometimes only until the other app is run again.
BTW, there are huge numbers of posts pointing to problems that are called bugs by the posters (and some actually are), so it's likely your post was deleted for a different reason than the fact that reported a bug.

  • Still no fix for USB card sleep Issue

Hi I just bought a 3rd party USB 2.0 card (an IOGEAR GIC251U). When I plug my LaCie extrenal USB drive in it works fine, until the computer has been to sleep. When the computer wakes up the drive has disappeared and I get a message saying that the drive has been improperly disconnected and that I can damage it by not ejecting before disconnecting.
Looking at the posts on this forum, it seems that this PCI USB card sleep issue is a persistant problem. I have even heard buying a card described as a "crap shoot".
That is not an acceptable answer to me. I insist that Apple reccomend a USB 2.0 card that it is willing to garuntee will work with my mac (an AGP G4 blue and white tower). If not, how can Apple in good faith sell computers with PCI that isnt equipped to handle built in apple features such as the sleep mode? I don't mean to sound like a demanding jerk of a customer but I dont think it is too much to ask that my computers advertised features (PCI expandability and sleep mode) both be able to work together.
G4/400 MHz AGP graphics   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi
xlr8yourmac.com has a wealth of info on compatable devices of all kinds, it's often worth looking there & other Mac sites before purchasing..
Apple cannot possibly determine compatability of all available 3rd party devices, it is up to the vendor to determine what systems/OS versions their hardware will support.
I would stick with a vendor that is known for Mac support, such as Sonnet (or others that are sold through Mac sites such as OWC, SmallDog,etc.,) unless you are willing to do significant research on a specific product for compatability with your specific setup prior to purchasing.

  • Permanent fix for hisses, cracks, pops, and squeals!!!

I have been experiencing random cracking, popping, ear deafing squeals, and disappearing sound for sometime with my X-Fi Music Extreme(about 4 years worth). I had experienced all in both Vista and Windows 7. The ear numbing squeals started in the last year or so in both Vista and 7.
    Here's how I fixed mine
    . Shut down system
    2. Disconnect everything from the tower incuding power cord.
    3. Press power button for 0 seconds to release any residual power in the system
    4. Opened case.
    5. Found? installed X-Fi hardware.
    6. Remove mounting screw or hold down hardware from the X-Fi card.
    7. Firmly pulled card from the tower.
    8. Replaced slot with blank slot to cover the opening.
    9. Plugged back in all USB, and other devices,
0 . Plugged audio jacks into onboard sound.
    . Restarted system.
    2. Entered BIOS
    3. Enabled onboard sound.
    4. X-Fi card was at that point taken to the waste(trash)receptical.(It's not worth giving away for fear of lawsuit for damaging someones ears by the horendous squeals.)
I now how a very nice system without any squeals, pops, crackling, or disappearing sound.
    Audio is now excellent!!

    : Day 3...
I'm happy to report that my fix has so far proven itself. Still no pops, cracks, hisses, or mind numbing squeals. I'll admit, I'm still a little bit gun shy, especially with headphones. I still catch myself anticipating one of those ear busters.
Also I might add, I honestly can't tell any difference now between the onboard sound and the X-F sound card. Hopefully that's not due to those random deafening decibels.

  • How can I disable Safe Mode permanently?

I'm one of many people who use a Firefox addon called 'Leechblock' to help combat the tendency to waste time online by visiting time-wasting sites, or in my case - visiting porn sites. Leechblock helped, because it allowed me to ban the sites and search terms I would habitually go for. The only problem is that I'm now aware I can circumvent the whole ban thing by hitting 'Shift' when I click FIrefox and opening up the Safe Mode, this allows me to freely search for porn and\or disable the addon.
I know that several other people use Leechblock for the same purpose, and we've all come up against this - if we could disable Safe mode on our own version of Firefox, it'd take considerably more effort to get back in and fall back to those bad habits.
Others have posted instructions for disabling Safe Mode, but they've only worked with much older versions of Firefox. Is anyone with the experience able to dedicate a little bit of time to figuring out and explaining for the non-technical user how to do this on the latest version of Firefox?
Your help would be much appreciated, not only by me but by others with the same issue. Thanks!

  • How can I disable save sleep in Snow Leopard

I've installed 10.6.2 on a 16 GB SDHC card as an emergency boot drive for my MacBook Pro as an alternative to carrying an external HD when travelling. I would also want to use this card for download of large numbers of digital photos in the event of a catastrophic HD meltdown. I have trimmed the card to leave 5.38GB free, but would prefer more space. The sleepimage file is taking up 4GB, and the only procedure I have found to disable safe sleep and get rid of the sleepimage file can be found here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070302210328928, but the hint is marked 10.4 only. Can anyone advise me on the procedure to accomplish this in Snow Leopard? Safe sleep would not be a priority for me in an emergency situation. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

    This should help:
Energy Saver- About sleep and idle modes in Mac OS X.
Description and modification of the different hibernate modes
When the computer goes into sleeping mode, its behavior depends on a power management variable called hibernate mode. The hibernate mode can be set to different values:
0 : Default sleep behavior on most Apple computers. RAM is still powered on while sleeping. Wake up is fast. Safe sleep is disabled.
1 : Hibernation behavior. System is totally shut down while sleeping. RAM contents are dumped to disk. Wake up is slow.
3 : Default behavior on Powerbook HD computers. RAM is still powered on while sleeping. Wake up is fast. Safe sleep is enabled, so RAM contents are also dumped to disk before going to sleep.
Only a single mode can be activated at a time. In order to check what hibernate mode is currently active, the following command can be used in the Terminal application:
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
In addition, users with administrator privileges can choose the hibernate mode. In order to do so, the following command can be used:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode X
with X replaced by the value of the hibernate mode to set. You will be asked to enter your admin password. It will not be echoed.

  • Making the MacBook Pro "use" safe sleep?

Is it possible to turn the MBP off, but so it starts up from the "sleepimage" file?
Sort of like, putting it to sleep then pulling the battery out, but in a more civilized manner.
With the time it takes my mbp to wake from sleep, i think it would be just as quick to do that, and save more power!

Sometimes its fairly instantaneous, at worst it may take a minuet or so. Sometimes it seems to half wake up but the screen doesn't turn on, the white light stops pulsing and stays on, I think it may be trying to use my 2nd display as the only monitor.
My theory for this being that I press buttons to hurry things up so it might think I'm using an external keyboard and trying to use it in "lid closed mode" (or what ever it is called). But I don't have an external keyboard attached so this shouldn't happen?
I usually leave everything connected (mighty mouse, 2nd display (targa visionary), pen drive) and just put it to sleep at night. I only restart when I have to, usually when there's an update that requires it.
I haven't done much about trying to find the problem (if there is one) with the slow wake up. Other people who had this problem solved it by disabling safe sleep, when I read about that I thought I might just make use of it instead.

  • Why does my macbook pro safe sleep instead of sleep?

After upgrading to OSX Lion, I found the performance of my 13" Core2 Duo 2.53 Macbook pro to be somewhat slow, so I upgraded the memory to 8Gb. While this seems to have made the machine a little faster, it's given me a new problem: When I "sleep" the machine, either from the menu or closing the lid, it actually goes into safe sleep. This then takes quite some time to wake up again. If I disable safe sleep with sudo pmset hibernatemode 0, the computer simply reboots.
It seems that when sleep is activated, it sleeps for a few seconds then simply powers off. I can't figure this out. I've reset the PRAM and checked all permissions. I even removed /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist to no avail. There's nothing obvious (at least to me) in the console either.
Logically, the RAM may be a problem, but I am loathe to go back to being so slow. the RAM was sold to me as being Apple compatible but maybe my local dealer lied to me? Perhaps it's something related to the battery?
Can anyone give me any tips or other ideas to pursue?

Same issue when I upgraded from 4GB to 8GB. I used Kingston's, and followed every Apple memory specs.
I don't know how to solve this. Already tried pmset, and other stuff. MacBook works fine, but this is annoying.
It is sleeping, showing the breathing light, but when I open the lid, light stops and have to force shutdown and turn it on again. When I start the system, it recovers files from disk, what means that it already was in safe sleep mode.
