Permission issue with mount_smbfs in /Library/StartupItems

I can't seem to find a resolution for this, so I'm hoping someone here can help me out...
I have a few SMB shares that I want to automount at startup. I've created a shell script and plist and have placed them in a new folder under Library/StartupItems. I've also created folders in /Users/Shared/ as mountpoints. The script, plist, file names, and permissions are all set up correctly, and everything works... the item launches at boot and attempts to mount my SMB shares.
The problem, however, is that since the StartupItems are executing as root, no user accounts have permission to access the mountpoint. If I run the mounts manually as a user, the mountpoint becomes accessible.
How do I run this mount as a StartupItem and make it accessible to all users?

The proper way these days would be to create a launchd .plist using a utility such as lingon.
But if you want to use StartupItems and mount the SMB share as a user, then try
su usernametouse -c "mount ..."
and no, you will not find the -c option on the su man page, because it is a bourne shell option. Everything after the su user name is passed to /bin/sh, and -c is a valid sh option which says, run this command.

  • ITunes 10.5: Permission issue with the iTunes Library file...

Ok all, I have a strange and potentially problematic issue.
Background: Recently upgraded to thee latest 10.5 iTunes along with OSX 10.7.2 and iOS 5 on my iPhone.  My iTunes library is large - almost 300,000 songs, but have not had any issues until after the upgrade - except for the sluggishness of the progam (which apprears to be normal once you reach a certain point) as well as limitations with Genuis which I've not been able to resolve in any version.  I also have a fairly elaborate Playlist setup which I've refined over the past couple of years.  My iTunes library resides lookly in the default location under Music and the Media Folder sits on 3TB external.  Note that everything has worked fine up until now...
Anyway, this is just a quick background - and also to set the stage for any suggestions that might involve a 'random' rebuild of the iTunes library as it would involve a massive effort.
Problem:  Very intermittantly while playing music I will get an error pop up "Itunes library cannot be saved. A folder was specified instead of a file".  Otherwise everything appears working - playcounts are updated and reflected in my SmartPlaylist while I pay, lyrics seem to be added as I play (via TuneText), etc - and all syncs fine with the iPhone.
Now if I shut down iTunes when this happens and try and reopen, I will get the error "The iTunes Application cannot be opened, an unknown error occured (13014)."  Now if I look at the permissions of the iTunes Library database it shows "You have unknown access".   Note the permissions of all other files are ok.
In the past to correct this I've pulled back an earlier version of the Library from my Time Machine which of course is not ideal. I've also set up a parallel library about a year ago which can open fine (I use this other one to stage the music before importing into my main one in that the main is too slow to edit anything major).
So far I've tried Repairing Permissions and reinstalling the iTunes.app but the intermittant problem is not resolved.

****...After days of new issues, the problem returned again this morning!! Both the iTunes Library and iTunes Library.itl showing with unknown permissions.
To answer your question whop, yes when I rebuilt my entire library, I started afresh and rebuilt my .itl file with all the playlists, etc.
What is interesting with the problem I just noted now while writing this entry here, repaired permissions with Disk Utility and it corrected the unknown permission error.  I cannot see anything in the report though (below) that ties to these specifically being repaired.

  • Does anyone have issues with the instrument library?

I've installed iLife 08 and then added all the jam packs. Now when I open GB the default track is an accordion (not a piano) and when adding loops to the timeline they take on a different instrument sound (e.g. drum loop sounds like raindrops, etc.)
I've searched high and low for similar problems and have found nothing that resembles this, I've cleared my preferences and repaired permissions and still nothing helps, I've contemplated reinstalling but I have no guarentee that that will help and I'm reluctant to invent the 3 hours it will take to do all that if it is all for nothing...
Bottom line is...is this really an issue with the instrument library and is there any way for me to fix this without reinstalling?

Just loaded the 6.0.2 update a few days ago.  I was hoping it would fix the dropping of wifi where the 4g and 3g always kept.  I have restored the router and I have even switched towers through AT&T's help, but to no avail.  I still am dropped and sometimes it spins and spins looking to connect and then says, Cannot connect at this time. Sometimes it connects, and when the phone goes to sleep, it disconnects and then it is heck connecting again.   I am very upset for I do not have unlimited data and my data has soared over 270 mg which I usually always kept way below 200 as  being in my home most of the time.  I am planning to take into AT& T store for a new one, just not happy with the wifi situation.  It is sad that this cannot be fixed with an update.  I saw earlier that some Iphone 5 made in China were the cuprits, and maybe I got one of those.  I hope At&T and Apple are reading these dialogs.  Please let me know if fixes are on the way!

  • Permission Issue with Adobe Bridge

    Hello Support,
We are an all mac environment, and we are trying to import and export templates of metadata from Adobe Bridge. The files we are accessing are on a file server on our network. When making changes to metadata using Adobe Bridge we are getting permission denied. The permissions are fine, as we can add, delete, and modify files in the same server directories using finder or other applications. This has happened in the past and the resolution was to create a a whole new profile on the local mac.The new profile then had no issues with importing and exporting metadata. However, this is now the third time we have had to create a new profile on the local mac to resolve this permission issue within Adboe Bridge. We are running Adobe Bridge CS5 version 4.0.0.5.2.9. We are wondering if there is a permanent solution to this, seeing as we do not want to have to re-create a new profile every 3-4 months. Could there be a setting in Adobe that we need to edit or anything else that would avoid us having to re-create the profile? Thanks in advance for all advice to this issue.

any help at all would be gladly appreciated. Also, is there a phone number or chat support with Adobe support that anyone can provide?

  • Permission issues with files put on desktop by Vista

    Hi Folks,
I posted this before and got no response so I'm trying again.
Trying to finally solve an issue that has dogged me ever since upgrading to Lion in the summer. Since installing Lion 10.7 (clean install), I now seem to be having File Sharing issues with a fellow colleague who is on Vista. When trying to open a file placed on my desktop by this user (who has been set up as a "real" network user in Sys Prefs) I get the following message:
"You do not have permission to open the document "Some_Image.jpg".
Contact your computer or network administrator for assistance.
I have to do the following In order to gain access:
    1. Unlock small lock icon in bottom right of Get Info Window
    2. Enter Password in dialog that says "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."
    3. Click the now enabled plus sign below list
    4. Select my self from the list of users
    5. Change privilege to "Read & Write" in Privilege column adjacent to my user name.
Both Vista Machines do this to me although Windows 7 does not. UPDATE: one user has updated his vista install to WIndows 7 and I have this problem again.
I had hoped that the 10.7.3 update would have fixed this problem for me as I read that the update addresses some Networking issues, but it hasn't.
    Any thoughts here?
    Thank you,
    J.E. Flynn

Oddly enough, I can't even seem to provide "Write Only (Drop Box)" access to the Windows clients.
My limited understanding of Widows networking and sharing is starting to rear it's ugly head.
If I set up File Sharing and give the windows client access to a shared folder. It can copy files but still I do not have access to those (as described above).
The only way I can get a Windows machine to access my Mac is for them to type my computers local IP in the Explorer address bar " \\192.168.1.XX " and login as me. Obviously, this is not desirable
All other attempts to login from a Windows client are now failing.

  • Permission issue with external hard drive

    Hi,
I have an external hard drive that has a bunch of video and audio files on it. Any time I try to open any file from the drive, regardless of file type, the application it's supposed to open it says it can open. Most of the people I have talked to have said that it's a permission issue and have not had a solution for this. Looking for any suggestions on how to repair these permissions. Disk utility has been no help and when running recovery software like Data Rescue the files come out in the end with the same issues.
    Thanks.

Drive was shot and could not rescue the information

  • Strange Issue  with Logout | Shared Library in WebCenter

For our customer, we have written a couple of task flows. We deployed this as an ADF Library JAR and included the JAR into our WebCenter Portal project (using IDE Connection -> File System Connection). We then placed the task flows onto a few portal pages and everything works fine.
Now to avoid redeploying the portal application each time we make a small change to the task flows, we decided to go ahead with the shared library approach. We create a new “Generic application” in ADF, added the ADF Library JAR to this application and created a WAR deployment profile. We then deployed this application as a “shared library” to the Weblogic server.
We then made the necessary entry to weblogic.xml of our custom WebCenter Portal application and deployed it.
The task flows were getting consumed properly and all functionality was working fine. Just to test, I even deployed an updated version of the shared library and noticed that the portal application picked up the new task flow code. Everything seemed perfect 
But now when I click on logout of the Portal application, I am getting a error dialog which indicates a server 404 error.
To eliminate any issue with our custom code, I repeated the same steps with a very basic task flow application and a new WebCenter portal application.
    1.     I ran the application, and logged in as “weblogic” and saw the task flow was displaying correctly
    2.     Click on Logout. Got an error dialog (A connection to server has failed (Status=404))
    3.     Click on OK in the dialog. Then click on Logout again. Got another error dialog ("Because of inactivity your session has timed out" )
    4.     Click on OK in the dialog. Got logged out (saw the page without the secure content i.e. my task flow)
Ideally, I would like to get logged out the first time I get logged out (without having to see those two dialogs). The logout was working perfectly fine before we switched to the Shared Library approach.
Am I missing something? Any pointers?
    Note – My Jdev/ADF/WebCenter versions are 11.1.1.5.0

Sometimes resetting an Apple ID password can help >  Apple - My Apple ID
If that doesn't help, from the iTunes menu bar click Store > Sign Out
Restart the Mac, launch iTunes then sign in again.

  • SL Server Permission Issues with Windows XP Clients

I'm running into some permissions issues with Snow Leopard Server. I know it's specific to SL Server because I have two Leopard servers and neither one is affected. All servers are set up the same way.
I'm using this SL server as a file server in the golden triangle approach: AD for Users, OD for Groups that supply AD User membership. I have one volume per OD group, and that group has read/write privileges to that volume via the default Server Admin read/write ACL. POSIX permissions are 770 on the top level directory, and ownership is set to the AD user who owns the volume, and the OD group the volume belongs to.
The client is XP SP3. When the client accesses a share on the SL server, their access is correctly granted and they can browse the share and read any files inside the share. They can copy files to the share from wherever. They can open, edit, and save files. However, they cannot rename or delete files within the share. They cannot rename folders, but can delete them. This affects all AD users regardless of the OD group they're in.
I have a few Windows 7 and Vista clients on the network, and these two OS's are not affected by this so the problem is limited to XP. If I create a user in OD, and auth to the sever from the XP client as that user, the problem goes away, so it's something to do with AD and SMB.
I do have a ticket in with Apple support, which was escalated to Engineering. Still waiting on that.
Things I have tried that have not worked/helped:
-Modify the ACL to Full Privileges
-Tried removing/re-adding user to OD group.
    -Remove darwin_streams from vfs_objects in smb.conf
    stream support = no
ea support = yes/no (tried both ways)
    darwin_streams:brlm = no
-Added nt acl support = no to smb.conf
    per http://bit.ly/6aYycW
    -Animal sacrifice..... ??
    Help?

I need to do more testing, but I think the fix is to add "acl check permissions = no" to the bottom of /etc/smb.conf:
; Site-specific parameters can be added below this comment.
    [global]
    acl check permissions = no

    Hello John,
It seems to be a permission issue. Just open the permission editor of the system and assign the everyone group to it. Select the checkbox corresponding to end-user. save it.
    It will solve ur problem.

  • File Permission Issues from Public Document Library In Workspace

    Hello All,
I've scanned through the posts and have not seen this issue.
I've created a workspace for a customer. They are able to login to the workspace with no problem. They can browse the documents and folders under Public Documents no problem. The problem occurs when they try to open a document. They are prompted for windows login credentials. This occurs for anyone using IE, not for Firefox.
We did find one work around for accessing WebDAV via IE, but I'd like them to use the console if possible.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Ray Parente

    Ray,
The issue with IE is that when a document is opened it tries to create a back channel via webDAV to allow the document to be edited in place. This is where the login request comes from and if the customer marks the login to be remembered it will only happen each time they access the document for the first time in a session.
IE uses webDAV but the others just download the doc and it must be resaved.

  • Permission issue with pm-suspend

I'm running gnome and I would like to have the suspend option in the shutdown menu as a regular usar.  Suspend works via pm-suspend, but its annoying to have to go through a terminal to put the laptop to sleep.
I checked the "can suspend" box in gconf editor, but I still don't have the option in gnome.  I think its a permission issue, I'm just not sure how to fix it.  I added the the regular user to the power group and I followed the pm-utils guide in the wiki.  Has dealt and/or solved this issue?

    try this:

or install hal from testing, those values should be default now.

    Thanks,

This is a 'known problem' as discussed on the MacWindows site, see http://www.macwindows.com/More-on-OS-X-conflicts-with-Windows-Server-Deduplicati on.html
It appears to still affect Mavericks 10.9.5 at least from the lack of any positive reports to the contrary. It is perhaps a bit late but it would have been worth signing up for the public beta of Yosemite and testing that and if needed reporting it as an issue for Yosemite as this will be getting more bug fix attention than Mavericks now.
I would agree turning off de-duplication is not a desirable solution, however other possibilities to consider are installing the standard Samba software on a Mac and using that instead of Apple's SMBx software. This is done by using the SMBup installer See http://eduo.info/2013/07/13/smbup-faq it does not officially list Mavericks but I did see at least one report that it still worked. A second possibility is to install ExtremeZ-IP which installs an AFP server on to your Windows Server and also gives the bonus of supporting Spotlight searches.
Note: You should only try SMBup on a test setup first.

  • Weird permission issue with 10.5.8

After the update I get these 2 permission errors that will not repair:
    2009-08-12 00:11:42 -0600: Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/_CodeSignature/CodeResou rces", should be ?--------- , they are ----------.
    2009-08-12 00:11:43 -0600: Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DotMacLegacy.framework/Versions/A/_CodeSignat ure/CodeResources", should be ?--------- , they are ----------.
Anyone else have this happen? I've never seen "?---------" or "----------" before.

It is a widely known issue.

  • ITunes Library on NAS - issue with saving the library file

I recently moved my library file and all iTunes data to a NAS. Generally, this setup seems to work (although writing files and editing information is fairly slow). However, when iTunes is open for longer periods, I often get the error message "The iTunes library cannot be saved. The required disk cannot be found." The connection to my NAS drive seems ok, though. I would welcome any ideas or reports of any settings changes that may have fixed the same issue.

It sounds to me like your NAS is going to sleep.
From what I have read on this forum using iTunes with NAS has all kinds of issues.
