Pertaining to G-Raid minis

I have a G-Raid mini 1TB and it gets very hot. It does not have a fan. Does anyone know if this is normal? I've been blowing a small fan fan over it.

Agreed. I have several aluminum enclosed drives with and without fans. They both get hot as the aluminum is designed as a heat sink. In particular, note the bottom of the G-Raid Mini has a rippled metal piece. It butts up against the drive and the ripples triple the surface area, allowing it to conduct the heat away from the drive and dissipate it quickly.
That said, particularly on warm days or when I am at home with all my drives, my router, my computer, my thunderbolt display is all putting off heat, I have a fan to help keep things even cooler. This helps because sometimes when it gets really hot, the drive or computer will spin down a little. It performs slower, but prevents overheating. The fan prevents that from needing to happen. The convection of the air on the aluminum dissipates the heat very quickly.

Looks like the Silicon Image drivers were moved to the incompatible software folder during install/upgrade.
Downloaded latest drivers, errored out of install claiming that the drivers were from an unknown author!!!
Emailed their tech support this evening describing problem.

It shouldn't need formatting. That should have been done to make the RAID. If you need to erase the RAID:
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select the RAID volume you wish to format from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

G-RAID with thunderbolt to Firewire adapter

Hi, I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro with Retina display. I also purchased a Thunderbolt to Firewire800 adapter with it to plug in the G-RAID mini disks I already had. WHen I try to plug the G-RAID mini in the TBtoFW adapter it make a regular beep and doesn't mount. Any clu on why this is happening?
The drives mounted perfectly on my 17in MBP and it works great on the MacPro I'm using right now.

It's beach use the FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter doesn't provide enough power. I've heard using two adapters with it plugged to both FireWire ports works. You plug one in, then the other.
I'm curios if the new G-Raid Mini is bus powered by USB 3. Or if you can plug in USB 3 and the adapter to get enough power. I only have 1 TB port on my Air.

Will the G-Drive Mini work with the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter?

I'm closing in on buying a new MacBook Pro, but the lack of FireWire on the new retina models is worrying me. I've seen a lot of negative responses in regard to the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, specifically in regards to the G-Raid mini - most of them noting it's the dual drive that's the issue.
So would any of you happen to know - does a G-Drive mini work well with the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter? I will be doing a lot of heavy video editing if that makes any difference.

I found out after purchasing a Retina MacBook Pro that you can in fact use the G-RAID Mini, the way to do it is to have two Thunderbolt to FireWire adapters, plug in the first one to the drive and the computer, wait for the drive to start clicking, and then plug the other cable between the computer and the G-RAID on the second port.
This obviously only works if you have a rMBP as you need the two Thunderbolt ports.

Portable external raid - should I get 5400 or 7200 rpm?

Hi,
I'm in need of a portable external raid 1 for live data protection. I do illustration work in photoshop and I use bridge to access and view files and reference. I would like to write all my files and read all my files from an external raid 1 and I am wondering if I should get a 5400 or 7200 rpm setup.
My concern is read and write speeds.
My portable setup is a mbp 2.16 intel core duo. I'm thinking of getting the g raid mini 2.

To clarify my question though -
1. I'm wondering if either will be fast enough to work off of - I'm planning on keeping the internal drive clean and all data would reside on the raid(so no incremental backups will be needed).
2. will the difference between 5400 and 7200 be worth the difference in price - ie. lag time or a noticeable speed difference.

Urgent!! - - Terminal command may be interfering with my G Raids.

After I had entered a command into the Terminal and restarted the computer, my 2 external drives (G Raid mini and G Raid) do not show up nor can I use them at all on my laptop.
The command I had entered was sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions. It is for my Shuttle Pro editing mouse.
Is there a way to undo this command. I think it might be interfering with their operation.

I have performed the disk repair in Disk Utility and it stated that it repaired any permissions that might have been in need of repair.
But did you Repair the Disk before Repairing Permissions?

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Portable raid 1 hdd?

I'm looking for a portable raid 1 (or similar mirrored) harddrive solution, with a capacity of at least 200Gb. Can anybody help me out?
The best I've found is g-tech g-raid mini. The problem is it only does raid 0.
Any suggestions very welcome.

Editing on the go has its own peculiar risks. Losing an external drive would be high in both probability and on the level of an OMG! total disaster.
Losing the computer, spilling coffee on it, dropping it, all that stuff.
I strongly advise you draw up a Risk Assessment document and get someone to help you objectively evaluate your real and imagined risks and their costs in terms of time, project schedule and real money.
I force my clients to do this often (at my boss's urging) and, by the time they look at their project's risks and costs and rewards, the realworld indications are quite surprising. Not always, though, and sometimes we just do whatever the heck they want anyway.

ProRes LT and FireWire 800 GRaid Mini

It's been awhile since I tried to go mobile without an Sonnet F2. I'm on a MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8GB of memory. I've converted my footage to ProRes LT and put it on a G-Raid mini - 7200rpm drive. I'm coming in FW800 and still getting warnings playing back my timeline.
The footage says it's 11 MB/s...and my AJA speed test says the drive is reading and writing at over 70 MB/s.
I'm certain there's more to the equation...but what am I missing. I'm using FCP 7.0.2..only doing cuts with one stream of video. 4-tracks of audio.
Suggestions?

yeah...no render bar. Just still choking the system. I have 8GB of RAM (I know only about 2.5 are devoted to FCP) so this shouldn't be. And yep, Studio X...ALL of the footage in my project is now ProRes 422 (LT). I'd send you a pic, but you can trust me.
the other unusual thing is that when I opened the project this a.m. it spent 25 minutes writing audio and video as though some sort of export were set up.
I'm using an external monitor, but that has been the case for years...or at least months with my new MacBook Pro 17-inch.
Something else is choking it, but can't find it.
I added a timelapse today, but it was choking BEFORE that.
Would love to start over, but too much footage to bring back in.

Looking for a new Hard Drive

I am having trouble keeping up with my editing. With grand kids and RVing I am getting footage faster than I can edit. To that end I am looking into a Macbook pro so that I can edit when we travel.
For the new laptop I will need a scratch disk.
I would like a 1TB firewire drive that would be pretty durable. It would be getting moved around much more than the LaCie I am currently using.
Any recommendations?

The Lacie d2 Quadra and Little Big Disk Quadra (7200rpm model) drives are pretty robust.
I also like the G-Drive and G-RAID mini from G-Tech.
If you are going to travel with a hard drive, get a padded case for it, or a laptop case big enough to store it and your MacBookPro.

New Time Capsule: just use as external hard drive without other setup

I have a brand new 2 Tb Time Capsule, and I need to move data to it manually (not as a backup) as soon as I can to solve another problem.
Can I do this without doing the full blown Time Capsule setup (which I've never done) ? Just plug it in and wirelessly connect my MBP to it?
The other problem is 1 Tb external drive (G-Raid Mini) that suddenly cannot be written to, and I need to offload the data (700 Gb of photos) and reformat it immediately. There isn't enough room on the MBP and the USB connected 1 Tb Iomega being used as a time machine, and I don't have any other Mac formatted hard drives. This problem occurred I think because in order to get around an incompatibility problem with an Express Card CF Card Reader after loading Lion, I was advised to restart the MBP in 32 bit mode. Next thing I know, my G-Raid with all my photos can't be written to.

Thank you very much for your response.
I got brave last night, and plugged in the TC, and ran an Ethernet cable from the Switch that connects via an in the wall Ethernet cable to the main VZ FiOS Router (which also propagates a private wireless network). I just answered the questions in the setup, which led me to setting up a secured wireless network, and configuring the router part of the TC as a Bridge. Then I wirelessly connected the MBP to this new network, and began moving some files.
Before doing that I had unplugged the cable from the MPB to the Switch (since instinctively I thought that would be a conflict with the wireless connection via the TC bridge to that switch, and the router behind it, but I'm not sure I'm right about that).
However, I later realized I should have just plugged that cable into the TC, and used that connection to move files (and connect to the Internet), since the wireless connection has been SLOW: about 1 min 40 seconds for each Gb. And it just stops sometimes (I guess because of competition with the traffic from the MBP to the Internet).
I'm moving 370 Gb off the Iomega that came from the G-Raid since I needed to clear space on the Iomega because it still has the duty of doing the Time Machine backup. I did't want that to run out of disk space on it since I had copied some of what was on the G-Raid there before I realized that the MacBk HD plus the Iomega were not going to have enough room to empty the G-Raid Mini.
As soon as this operation is finished, I'll change the connection from MPB to TC to wired, and start copying directly from the G-Raid everything that hasn't already been copied somewhere else directly to the Time Capsule storage. Instinct says I shouldn't disturb the present coping process, much as I'd like to speed things up.
As to your suggestion that I just plug the G-Raid into the TC, it's connection to the MBP is FW800. It also has a USB 2.0 port, and an E-SATA port. Wouldn't FW800 to MPB and MBP to TC via Ethernet be faster than a direct USB 2.0 connection?
How do I control what happens between the TC and drives plugged into it from the MBP (a novice kind of question, but I find it confusing that the TC is both a router, and an attached storage device)? Do I see it from the MBP as if it were directly attached to the MBP?
Do you (or any other forum member reading this) have any suggestions or comments about the above? Do you think my observations are correct?

Does Boot Camp under 10.68 or 10.7.0 / 10.7.1 support Thunderbolt in Windows XP Pro?

Looking to get a new MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt.
No doubt this will ship with OS X 10.7.0 or the recently released OS X 10.7.1.
The machine I’m upgrading from has a Windows partition running Windows XP Pro under Bootcamp (in OS X 10.6.8).
Part of the purchase of the new machine is ideally a Thunderbolt equipped RAID.
The layout would be:
MacBook Pro -> RAID -> mini DVI connection to Apple cinema display.
Two Bootcamp related questions:
1. When this setup is running under Bootcamp can the “Windows machine” use the screen or do I need to exclude the RAID every time I use Bootcamp?
2. If I put a Windows (NTFS) partition on the RAID can the machine access that as a second drive under BootCamp?

Well because I am required to use it (Windows 7) on a desktop and despite having turned all the security rubbish off (and having others check that its off) I still get warning messages and alerts and other rubbish almost every time I try to do something (like having to install as an administrator, etc.).
Windows XP is certainly not as good as OS X (or even Mac OS 6 IMHO) but at least it lets me get things done.
Add to that the pain of “upgrading“ from XP to Windows 7 (which is effectively re install everything) as opposed to merely transferring the bootcamp partition from one drive to the next.
I’ve had Mac since a 512K and I want a Mac, I don’t want to be swiping hand stokes to do things (or a boring monochrome interface) or Mission Control or all the other “new stuff” which is just an excuse for Apple to force iOS on all its desktop and laptop users (let alone its now dumbed down server product).
If I want that I’ll use my iPad.

Macbook Pro w/ 30 inch Dell monitor issue SOLVED

I was amazed at the huge problems Apple apparently had with the bizarre $99 adapter that enables 30 inch dual channel display for the new Mini Displayport machines, including the current Macbook Pros. The reports of problems here were terrible, and I frankly waited six months or more to buy my next machine because of these problems -- Apple should be more careful about products like this.
I'm happy to report that the Mini Displayport to Displayport cable from Monoprice works GREAT with my Dell 30 inch monitor (the current one, I can't find the number since it's hidden on the back but it's the current model they sell). Fully compatible in both Mac and Windows, video seems fine, and no issues that affect display quality. The only issue I have noticed is, when the monitor goes to sleep and I wake it up again on the Mac side, it displays strange lines. Any change in monitor color or resolution causes this to go away, so all I have to do is go to 16 bit color and back again. On top of everything, the cable is dirt cheap.

First off, the 'huge problems' that you mention pertain to the Apple mini-DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter. There's nothing 'bizarre' about that adapter - it allows you to connect a display requiring a dual-link DVI (i.e. up to 2560x1600) to your MBP. Those issues were not really that common (judging frequency of problems by reading these forums is like judging human health by visiting an Emergency Room - you'd think most of the population was sick or injured). More importantly, the _cable you linked above is an entirely different product_, a mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. If your display has only DVI input (such as the Apple 30" Cinema Display), the cable you link is useless.
But, although I find it utterly unsurprising that a mini-DP to DP cable will allow one to connect a mini-DP port on a computer to a DP port on a display, good to know that in that instance, the dirt cheap cable from Monoprice does the job.

Rearranging scratch disks on already-started project?

I have ~164G of captured HD footage from one dive trip on a large external drive, and have begun reviewing, sorting and rough-cutting the clips for a FCE 3.5 project. No sequences as yet, no rendering.
If I were to move the captured footage (using Finder) to a different external drive (the G-Raid mini 200GB, easy to tote around) and reset System Settings to reflect this, setting Video & Audio Capture to the G-Raid and Render files to the G-raid and the Mac HD, would I be able to disconnect all other external drives and open & work on my project using just the MacBook and the G-Raid?
I would then have >20GB available on the G-Raid and ~95GB on the Mac HD for rendering, and my sequences are short, 6-7 minutes max, and simple.
It is getting onerous to have to shlep along everything I've ever shot if I want to work on my video away from home. AND I seem to be getting a lot more "spinning beachball" for simple things like playing back in the Viewer since I connected a fourth external drive recently.
A forum search came up with nothing but the standard advice that System Settings are user and system, not project dependent. Can't believe that you're stuck forever with what you laid out on Day One!

I'm capturing HDV off a Sony HDR/HC7, i.e. capturing "NOW". All I can do is name the tape I'm capturing, and I use a date-plus-location filename for this. FCE names each captured clip uniquely with that filename plus a sequential numeric suffix. I put all of them in a Browser bin I call "captured footage" for the project and review them all, selecting and rough-editing the ones I want to use.
In a second bin called "Clips" for the project, I sort all these copied clips into a set of sub-bins, like "Divers," "Fish," "Invertebrates," etc. The filename of the source clip stays with the derived clip wherever it goes in the "Clips" bin, though I do modify each derived clip to a new Master Clip.
I add some kind of title to each clip I review, but I don't do it in the Filename column - I use the Log Note column. Sometimes I pull more than one clip out of a captured clip, and give them different "titles." But I NEVER change a Filename!
It seems to be working so far...
Only 2 hours to go on the Capture Scratch copy - I can hardly wait!

Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter not enough power

Warning to those who own G-Technology G-Raid Mini (Gen3) and a Macbook Pro Retina.
I just received my thunderbolt to firewire 800 adapter from apple yesterday. I hooked it up to the rMBP and plugged in my G-Raid Mini, the G-Raid Mini powers up, but then proceeds to make a beeping noise. The G-Raid Mini will not mount over bus-power thunderbolt to firewire 800 adapter. Although when I plug the G-Raid Mini into wall with power supply and then plug in the thunderbolt to firewire 800 adapter, the drive mounts.
It seems there is not enough thunderbolt bus power to mount a G-Raid Mini (Gen3)...
Has anyone heard otherwise? Can they confirm this doesn't work for them either.

I can't believe that Apple hasn't considered the fact that the majority of creative professionals need high capacity fast mobile storage.
I suppose we now need to wait for 2Tb Thunderboth enabled SSD drives which by my reckoning will cost more than the MacBook Pro!!!!
