Phonon-xine break phonon-mplayer-git

Hello All. I used phonon-mplayer-git and all was fine. The old bug of amarok with no play next track in playlist make me to try phonon-xine. It was some buggy and I'am back to the mplayer backend, but it didn't work! When I start sound test in systemsettings I give this in console:
QP_LOGGER /var/abs/local/yaourtbuild/phonon-mplayer-git/src/phonon-mplayer/mplayer/libmplayer/MyProcess.cpp 69 LibMPlayer start Process started: "mplayer" "-noquiet -slave -identify -msglevel demux=6 -framedrop -nokeepaspect -zoom -colorkey 0x020202 -monitorpixelaspect 1 -contrast 0 -brightness 0 -hue 0 -saturation 0 -volume 100 -prefer-ipv4 -ass -embeddedfonts -nomouseinput -sub-fuzziness 1 -input nodefault-bindings:conf=/dev/null -include ~/.mplayer/config /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In.ogg"

any ideas?
p.s when I start command
"mplayer" "-noquiet -slave -identify -msglevel demux=6 -framedrop -nokeepaspect -zoom -colorkey 0x020202 -monitorpixelaspect 1 -contrast 0 -brightness 0 -hue 0 -saturation 0 -volume 100 -prefer-ipv4 -ass -embeddedfonts -nomouseinput -sub-fuzziness 1 -input nodefault-bindings:conf=/dev/null -include ~/.mplayer/config /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In.ogg"
without any quotes It play!

I found the source of the missing entries. Somehow with quick-init alsa-oss sequence doesn't exit ( /dev/snd/snq) reloading the module snd_pcm_oss with rmmod and modprobe restores the missing entries like HDAudio ALC888 Analog in phonon-xine and make my capture device entry reappear.
Now to find why when quick init loads snd_pcm_oss, the snd_seq_oss module isn't loaded alongside.
Update : While snd_seq_oss isn't loaded, just adding it in my rc.conf doesn't cut it, I have now Alsa default device, oss default device, jack, and esd listed by phonon xine instead of HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog), HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital SPDIF IEC958) HDA Intel (NVIDIA HDMI), jack and esd. Audio capture device is not back either.
I suspect this has to do with the way qinit load modules, maybe it's because they are loaded before udev. back to some testing.
Update2 : As suspected moving the starting of udev before the module loading is the solution. Looks like modules are configured when loaded only and if udev is not available rules like : /lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-alsa.rules will not be applied until module reload. i lose some boot time but well whatever let's go shopping for ssd.

  • Replace Phonon-Gstreamer by Phonon-VLC [SOLVED]

    Hi,
i'm quite new to GNU/Linux and this is one of the thing i don't understand. By reading the archwiki article about phonon which makes you independent on any multimedia framework like gstreamer I switched to phonon-vlc backend since i use vlc and as i understand it, it should use vlc codecs in any multimedia app in kde. Obeying the simple arch approach i tried to remove gstreamer and its plugins because i don't want to double the task. But it surprised me that pacman wanted to remove half of my system along with some packages like truecrypt. Why? Whole my life i lived in this illusion that truerypt is a encryption SW, i never used it for playing multimedia!:) Anyway, what's the deal with gstreamer? Thanks.

I'm sorry, i meant the "-d" option to skip dependency checks.
But anyway, if i run just bauerbill (pacman) -R gstreamer0.10-plugins it refuses to execute because of "farsight2". If i run bauerbill -R gstreamer0.10-plugins farsight2 it refuses because of libpurple and telepathy-farsight2 and so on... if i run -Rs the same thing happens
so if i run -Rc it wants to remove kdenetwork-krdc spicebird telepathy-qt4 telepathy-farsight libpurple farsight2.
I tried the -Rc option and then re-downloaded spicebird and the other stuff but it wanted gstreamer0.10-base-plugins. Now i have these leftovers:
    gstreamer0.10
    gstreamer0.10-base
    gstreamer0.10-base-plugins
    gstreamer0.10-good
    gstreamer0.10-python
    gstreamer0.10-ugly

  • [SOLVED] Possible to switch phonon backend?

During my first Arch installation, I used all the defaults. I had distorted sound in my headphones. Then, because of some problems with dual-booting, I had to reinstall Arch from scratch. Thinking it might make a difference, instead of gstreamer I chose xine this time around. (It made do difference.)
Anyway, I've since learned that "xine is unmaintained and will not see updates", so I'm wondering if it is possible to switch from xine to either gstreamer or vlc backend without having to reinstall from scratch.

do you know you have a systemsettings in kde? go to system settings > hardware > multimedia > phonon > backend.
personally I use the vlc backend for now, seems like the gstreamer backend is using some CPU..
choose from phonon-gstreamer, phonon-vlc, phonon-xine from extra and phonon-mplayer-git from aur.

  • [SOLVED] Phonon and libkhtml

    Hello,
Due to delay in hardware repair, I did not update my Arch box since early september.
Now I have the machine back and updated my installation.
All seems well, except for one problem that I don't understand:
Since the updates were installed, I get the following error message from various KDE applications:
symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libkhtml.so.5: undefined symbol: _ZN6Phonon19AbstractMediaStream8needDataEx
The message is thrown by Konqueror, but also by many other applications at startup (most important: Kile, which I really need for work).
Except for Konqueror this leads to non-starting applications.
I have installed the phonon-gstreamer backend as well as the phonon-mplayer-git backend. I also tried installing the phonon-vlc backend.
Can somebody point me to the reason of the error?

denisfalqueto wrote:Google results show that kind of problem is related to incompatible versions of kdelibs and phonon. Are you sure your update was successful? Maybe phonon got stuck in an old version for some reason. Could you check with pacman -Q | grep -i phonon?
Thanks for the answer, help is very appreciated.
Didn't notice any errors during the update process.
    Here's the installed versions:
    pacman -Q | grep -i phonon
    phonon 1:4.5.1-1
    phonon-gstreamer 4.5.1-1
    phonon-mplayer-git 20111025-1
    Also kdelibs:
    pacman -Q | grep -i kdelibs
    kdelibs 4.7.2-2

  • There's something wrong with mplayer

    Hi
Ionut Biru is the current packer of mplayer and he updates it very regularly, which is really great, because only a short while ago mplayer was terribly out of date. But unfortunately mplayer seems to have become really worse the past few weeks. I noticed it especially with 720p videos (encoded with h264), which use about half the power of my laptop, so they usually run fine (1080p videos are a bit too much though). And I use mplayer as my tv application, there are stuttering problems as well (yes even with these low resolutions).
What happens is, that these 720p videos don't run flawlessly anymore. It's not a dia show, but I get interruptions about every second. Taking a look at the cpu usage really disturbs me, because it's not even close to the maximum. So the problem MUST be mplayer. The revision I'm talking about is the current one, 31428. Fortunately I found an earlier version of mplayer, 31040, which I compiled with the very same configure options and now all videos run fine again. (I know I can get every revision via svn, but this 31040 source tree was used by Ionut in an earlier version, so I really wanted to compare to this one).
I didn't have the chance yet to test tv, but I guess this might be solved as well.
So my questions are, do other users have the same problems? And Ionut, how much testing do you do on those regularly updated packages? Do you also think that maybe these regular updates might be a bit to much? How about putting them in testing first, so everyone can check if there are problems? As said above, I really prefer such regular updates, but in case upstream breaks things, this might not be the right way.

Using mplayer-git really solved this problem for me, I like this fork far better. I threw out almost everything I don't need ("almost" because there are things left which can be thrown out, but I'll have to investigate a little further). Here's my PKGBUILD for inspiration

  • Xine broken (solved)

After a reboot all of the applications that use xine now donot work anymore.
For example, the login & logout sound is gone, and when I start Amarok from terminal, I get these:
    $ amarok
KGlobal::locale::Warning your global KLocale is being recreated with a valid main component instead of a fake component, this usually means you tried to call i18n related functions before your main component was created. You should not do that since it most likely will not work

Error message was:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown" : " "The name org.kde.amarok was not provided by any .service files" "
Does any one else meet this problem?

So I found something. phonon-xine is no longer maintained and it's been removed from the repos. Only us still using it have this problem, and i don't know how to solve it except changing the backend to gstreamer (or probably vlc, but didn't try).
Since you can't do it in the system settings (it will crash), here is how to do it.
    - First make sure you have installed phonon-gstreamer
    - Remove phonon-xine
    - Open ~/.kde4/share/config/servicetype_profilerc in some text editor and change the content to:
    [PhononBackend]
    Entry0_Preference=1
    Entry1_Service=phononbackends/gstreamer.desktop
    NumberOfEntries=1
Save it, then log out and in again. Hopefully you will have sound again, but this time using gstreamer.
I tried editing this file. It didn't work. I rebooted my computer and it is still the same xine backend being used.
EDIT: succeeded. I forgot to remove phonon-xine.
Now every thing works fine except the damn gapless playback in amarok.

  • No gmplayer in mplayer package : WHY ???

Why the hell is the gui gmplayer no longer included in the mplayer package ???
Who decided such a silly thing, and why… Only to make Arch more and more elitist ?
That is not serious, really not.
Or did I miss something ? A malware in the GUI, or something like that…

I am a kde user and I prefer gmplayer to smplayer every time! Here's my PKGBUILD which I've been using to rebuild mplayer for the past 2 years in order to get gmplayer:

This is true with multiple players (mplayer/audacious/vlc).
I don't even get the beep I usually get when I shutdown.
Here are the updates that you and I have in common.
    upgraded db (4.8.24-1 -> 4.8.26-1)
    upgraded gzip (1.3.13-1 -> 1.4-1)

  • Cannot install kile due to invalid signatures?

I'm used to ubuntu and Ubuntu Server, but Arch is new to me. I've installed Arch Linux last week, so far I like it a lot. However, pacman seems unable to install kile (the latex-editor from KDE) for some reason...

    After searching around a bit, I found http://www.archlinux.org/news/having-pa … -packages/
I tried that, but I think it doesn't apply to me, as I've installed Arch just last week. Running
    pacman-key --init
    pacman-key --populate archlinux
does not give me pacman.conf.pacnew, as I think is to be expected as I already started with an up to date pacman, right?
The contents of my pacman.conf are here: http://pastie.org/private/w5iwbcwknmaiffhxchzekq
I tried throwing away the packages with "pacman -Sc kile" and reinstalling with "pacman -S kile", same result.
Any ideas how to resolve this issue?
(Probably unrelated, but I'm running Arch in a VirtualBox, with xfce, Linux version 3.5.4-1-ARCH)

karol wrote:1. You should run 'pacman -Sc' not 'pacman -Sc foo'. 'foo' doesn't do anything here (no harm either) as 'pacman -Sc' doesn't take arguments.
    2. The issue you faced has been covered in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … 9.22_error (next to last question) yet people keep banging their heads against it. Have you read the 'Troubleshooting' part of Arch wiki article on pacman? Was there anything unclear? Maybe we can phrase it better?
I did not have *.part files, only 0-byte-files with the correct name, so that solution does not apply to my problem. Besides, the problem I had was that pacman said "Signature from "User <[email protected]>" is unknown trust, installation failed", so I tried the solution above the one you mentioned, which failed. As soon as I understood something was wrong with my cached files, it was solved quite easily.

  • [SOLVED] kwin acting strange after last update

    Hi,
After I upgrades yesterday, compositing in kwin was not working when the setting was on openGL. It works when I use Xrender but very very very slow. I'm rather new to arch linux. Somebody a solution?
It was a big upgrade. Something wrong with the new radeon drivers?
I'm on a 32 bit toshiba laptop and running kdemod (from chakra) and I use the ati-dri driver.
Everything was very nice and smooth until yesterday.
I hope somebody can help this newbie ^^
    thanks
here my (rather big)pacman log from yesterday. I hope that a futur update can fix it.

    Thanks for the clue, sir!
    That did it.
If searched wiki about KMS and it seems that KMS is better (if you're card support it). I hope that I can enable it again in the future.

  • Amarok 2.3.0 [SOLVED]

    Hello everybody .
My lovely Amarok keeps crashing on me, when i try to do a full scan for my collection.
Does anyone have a clue, cause i can't figure this out.
All my collection is perfectly tagged, and besides that, every other app (rhythmbox. banshee etc. ) scans my collection without any issues.
    heres the log :
Application: Amarok (amarok), signal: Segmentation fault

However, Amarok comes with a plugin to retrieve covers from the net, may be you want to use it until they finally fix this.
Well thats what I do now. But as I said it only finds around 1/3 of all covers (which actually would be available in the mp3s), and additionally amarok does not even show all of the covers correctly that are available in the covermanager.
However, thanks for the git-link http://gitorious.org/amarok/amarok/merge_requests/134. Here is the request. Last comment a month ago... well maybe it will be merged in the future. What does "verifying" mean here? That its tested before build in for everyone?

  • Skype blocks sound in flash

After I run skype I am unable to get sound out of flash (youtube, gmail chat notifications, etc).
I recently decided to branch out from my simple openbox setup and I'm still a bit lost in kde.  I've read multiple threads and have tried both phonon-mplayer and phonon-xine, currently using alsa.  Any ideas?

Is it the case of http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/All … Play_Sound or it's just Skype misbehaving?

  • 48 Hours of Arch (again)

Here's the text of a blog posting I did yesterday. I posted the link earlier, and was imformed by a mod that this was not the appropriate way to do it and I should just copy/paste the text here instead. So here it is, and I apologize for the indiscretion:
It's a huge leap from farting around on a VM to actually installing and using something new as a primary desktop OS, especially the way I use computers. My computer usage is complex and multi-faceted; I do multi-channel recording, web development, bash shell scripting, document creation using desktop publishing tools, and all of the usual day-to-day web browsing and emailing that everyone else does... all from a single desktop machine. I make full use of KDE's desktop activities in an attempt to keep my computing life somewhat organized, and do a lot of personalizing and tweaking. Here's a report of my first couple of days using Arch on the desktop.
The installation was as straightforward as it gets. As always I preserved my /home directory so as to avoid having to transfer all of my data or redo all of my desktop and app configurations. Arch does an extremely minimal install by default... absolutely nothing non-essential is installed! I like this model; with a fresh install of Arch I have a basic platform from which I can build any computer I can imagine. At the end of the installation process the Arch installer offers the user the opportunity to edit some system configuration files to his or her liking. This feature would probably be a bit off-putting for noobs, but for an experienced user it's extraordinarily cool!
The first thing I did was to run updates. Once that's done your basic platform is now a very up-to-date basic platform, in keeping with the Arch rolling release model. My next move was to install the stuff I needed in order to launch a KDE desktop. I had to install xorg, hal, phonon-xine and the KDE metapackage. I decided to install the KDE 4.6 RC2 package that was available in the KDE-unstable repository (I'd been running KDE 4.6 RC2 on this box with Alien Bob's Slackware packages already, so it made sense). I also had to add the hal and udev daemons to the /etc/rc.conf file... Arch never does stuff like that automatically; the only non-essential daemons that start at boot time are the ones I specify. I like it. I went ahead and installed the proprietary Nvidia graphics drivers while I was at it; why screw around? Once I had all that stuff taken care of I created my regular user account, making sure to add my user to all the appropriate groups. Finally I rebooted my box and switched over to runlevel five (multi-user graphical mode).
It wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Because I'd saved my /home partition I figured I'd be logging right into my familiar old desktop, but it wasn't quite that simple. Turns out Arch uses a .kde4 directory for KDE config files instead of .kde. Since I had no such directory it created one and launched me into a default KDE desktop. Fortunately it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what the problem was, and all I had to do was drop back into a terminal, get rid of the directory that KDE had just created for me, and rename my old .kde folder .kde4. I then logged back in and voila! Problem solved.
Well, almost. It still took some time to get my workspace back into order. I use a weather widget called YAWP and a window decoration program called Dekorator, neither of which are part of the standard KDE bundle. They weren't in the official repos either, but fortunately Arch packages for both were available from the unofficial AUR repo. Downloading and installing them was kind of similar to getting Slackware packages from Slackbuilds.org, except the process is a bit more automated and the Pacman package manager handles the dependencies for you. It turned out I had to install a few other workspace essentials as well; the plugin package for Konqueror is not a part of the default KDE bundle and had to be installed, as did Ktorrent and a few other things. That stuff was all available from the official repos. Some configuration details also had to be handled. Once all those things were taken care of the look and feel of my desktop was indistiguishable from what it had been with Slackware... a testament to both distros' commitment to providing unaltered, vanilla packages.
Then I set about installing software. Lots of software! Despite the fairly well-rounded software bundle the Slackware full install offers I'd had a ton of extra stuff installed, and my needs were compounded by the Arch minimal install approach. I installed VLC, Kaffeine, and Amarok for multi-media fun (and I shouldn't have been surprised to learn that Arch comes with no codecs installed at all!), Koffice and Scribus for document creation, qemu-kvm for virtualization, Digikam for photo management, the Gcompris educational game suite for my 3-year-old daughter, Jack, Ardour, Jamin, Audacity, Soundkonverter, and a slew of associated plugins for recording... and some other stuff, too. Some of that software had configuration associated with it; quemu-kvm requires kernel modules to be loaded at boot time, and realtime privileges had to be configured for Jack.
All of that sounds like a lot, but in truth it didn't take all that long. For one thing I'm an experienced Linux user who knows what he's doing and what he wants, and for another I had the excellent Arch Wiki to help me along when my unfamiliarity with the Arch way of doing things momentarily bogged me down. Really, that's one superb piece of documentation... I didn't have to ask a single question at the Arch forums. In any event, I had the whole thing up and running in about half a day... and I wasn't exactly devoting my full attention to it.
The rest of the time I've spent using my computer. In the last 24 hours or so I have:
1)recorded a demo using Jack/Ardour, and converted it to MP3 for web upload (no, it's not up yet)
2)Run a pre-existing Window 7 VM using quemu-kvm. I didn't do anything with it; I just wanted to make sure that it worked.
3)Used Scribus to create a brochure to send out to venues that will hopefully pay me money to play my guitar.
    4)Printed said brochures.
5)Watched a movie using Kaffeine (I'm not feeling well).
    6)Composed this blog posting.
7)Listened to lots of music using Amarok.
In short, Arch Linux is 100% functional on my desktop, and I'm doing all of the same things with it that I was doing with Slackware two days ago. So far it's been fast and stable, and it seems every time I turn around there's a newer version of some package or another available for download; I think this rolling release thing is going to be a lot of fun. I also kind of like the leaness of the system; there's nothing on this machine that doesn't contribute directly to it's use on my desktop. So far so good, and I'll keep you posted.
