Photos Turning Black in 3.01

Well this is new (for me). I just imported a bunch of RAW files into Aperture 3.01 from my Rebel xsi, which I've done without issue a few times before. During import everything looks fine – the photos are visibly loading into a new project – but then one-by-one all of the images turn black, as in completely black frames where the photos should be, but with the image name still below. So the project is now full of black boxes. I tried restarting, it didn't help. The RAW images are fine when viewed in the Finder. Help?

My last couple of ideas, and then I'm stuck for other suggestions .
Have you tried booting into the Recovery HD and running repairs to the HD?

And, although it's often dismissed by some on here others occasionally run OnyX, which has a good repution for performing disk maintenance safely (always have a reliable backup though). I've run it from time to time and have never had any concerns. It runs a variety of system checks that OSX can perform itself, but wraps all those processes in a clear GUI and executes them at your command:

Good luck - if you do ever get it resolved, please let us know the solution.

For years I have had no problems editing photos.  However, for some reason when I go to "edit" my photo the photo turns BLACK/BLANK.  The editing functions appear but I cannot see the photo.  When I select "done" the photo reappears.  Why is the photo disappearing for editing?  Have I hit a command accidentally that is causing this?  Really appreciate someone's assistance.

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run  Option #1, Repair Permissions, followed by Option #4, Rebuild Database, if needed.

  • Photos Turning Black During Editing

    Hello
I've been editing photos, and all of the sudden when I change brightness or contrast even 1 % the entire photo turns black. All of the other adjustment sliders are working properly.
I did a search, but found no relevant posts. Any help would be great.
    Thank you

Hi, I have been having the same issue recently with my iPhoto.
Editing pictures turns them completely black and un-editable.
I tried deleting the .plist file, but it did not help as the same photos are going black. Not all photos go black, only a certain few. These were edited in the past with no problems, only now they seem to be having trouble.
    Please help! thanks

  • As soon as I open a photo with Preview part of the photo turns black

As soon as I open a photo with Preview, part of the photo turns black.  Just started doing this.

Complain to the Attorney General about what? There is nothing in your story worth any such complaint. They will tell you the same.
First you have payment difficulty so credit and the Edge program are not available to you. You have to be credit worthy to get any upgrade, unless you can pay full price for all those new devices.
    Can you?
You are trying to get new contract plans, but since you are having paying on time and in full issues you will not get extended credit from any carrier.
What I would do is go and port out to Boost or Virgin Mobile where you pay a reduced cost for each device and get unlimited everything for $40 to $50 a month, it is pre pay so if you don't pay you get cut off.
Verizon although with the best coverage is also the highest priced.

  • Colored photos turn black and white when opening a new document in Photoshop. [was: help]

  • IPhoto photos into iMovie - once rendered, photo turns black

I posted under another thread, but decided this might be better posted to the larger group.
I was working off of an external harddrive when the problem first manifested itself. Dragging a photo from the media pane into the time clip, I saw that the photo turned black and would not display after being rendered.
I moved the drive to another Mac, also an iMac G4 but with a faster processor, and a slightly different experience occurred. Upon starting up the project, when I clicked yes to view the trash, the photos I had been trying to use were no in the trast.
I put a few back and tried to apply the effects, but then the photo turned black. then I grabbed a photo from iPhoto again. The photo would show up but the Ken Burns effect would not stick. If it did stick, the photo turned black and wouldn't display. I saved and quit.
Took my external harddrive to my Powerbook. Had better luck grabbing photos from iPhoto, but no Ken Burns effects worked.
Now I'm back on my original iMac. This time I copied the project to the iMac's harddrive. Now there is another experience - a little closer to what I want but still not what I'm used to:
I added the photo to the timeline, it rendered itself to black again. Much frustrated sighing.
However, I had added some music to the timeline in the interim periods and just decided to view what I had. Lo and behold the black photo displayed with the Ken Burns effect. I added a couple more photos and they began to behave as they always have. You can see the photo in the time line. The black one is still black.
All this is quite unsettling. I plan on doing a project with 60 students in October and need to know if anyone thinks this is a bug or what? Thanks for any insight.

I am having the same problem images turning black when brought into the timeline Started when bringing in Photos from APERTURE 1.5. Thought this program was the problem so, I imported the same images into iPhoto. The problem does seem to "fix" when transitions are added , but this makes it difficult to edit and rearrange images. The hard drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled). Shooting a Nikon D-70; D-200. Images a 2 - 5MG. Most confusing it is not consistent happens to some images and not others. Same problem happened when images were imported to iMovie.
ANY SUGGESTIONS MOST APPRECIATED, TRYING TO COMPLETE A BIG PROJECT THIS WEEK.
    THANK YOU

  • Photo turns black while editing...

    Hi,
I just upgraded from iPhoto 09 to iPhoto 11. All the latest software updates have been applied. Mostly, there's been no problems, except for one really annoying one.
When editing a photo, most of the time it works fine. But often times, especially when doing some heavy editing with the various exposure, saturation, sharpness and other sliders, the photo will just turn black...nothing. If I exit from edit mode, the photo is there just fine and the edits have even been applied. I go back to edit mode, it works fine for a couple of minutes and then, again, black. I tried this with many different photos, same results. This never happened before with iPhoto for me. I even tried it with photos that were similarly edited with iPhoto 09 (made a duplicate of the original and started working) and am getting the same problem.
I tried rebuilding the library (checking every box in the rebuilding dialogue box). No dice.
I tried trashing the com.apple.iPhoto folder in the caches folder of user/library. No dice.
I tired trashing the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file in the Preferences folder in user/library. No dice.
I even tried creating a new library and importing new photos in there and after some minutes of use, same problem. Again, no dice.
My machine is a white MacBook, 2.0 GHz C2D with 4 gigs of RAM running 10.6.5 and all the latest software updates (including iPhoto 9.1.1).
Does anyone know what gives? Is this a bug others are encountering? Thanks.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. *Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. *Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. *A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. *A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. *A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *If none of these help*:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Imported photos turn black

Using iMovie HD v6.0.4 and some, not all, imported photos, jpg, from files or from iPhoto transfer in iMovie and then are converted to all black image. Movies from the camera are imported fine. Any help is welcomed.

The forum list is hidden but I found it thank you. It seems that the "turn to black" is a defect in iM 6 that can be worked around. I just experimented with importing other photos and they were OK, back to the trenches.

  • IPhoto 8.x edit, rotate; portion of photo turns black

    iPhoto woes:
Scanned JPEG image prints okay. Thumbnail looks right.
Slight rotating and/or slight cropping of image image prints right size but print is black NOT image. Thumbnail is now black.
Scanned TIFF image, rotated and/or cropped image prints okay. Thumbnails okay.
Back seems to be layered over the image on sides and/or top and bottom.. Printed to PDF also has same large blacked areas.
    Any insights?

    More detail:
The images were scanned using the Kodak All in One ESP 7 scanner and saved in a folder.
Then I dragged the images folder into iPhoto and iPhoto would begin the export but crash. When I relaunched iPhoto, no images had been imported, but it would notify me there were un-imported images and ask if I wanted to continue the import. "19 photos have been found in the iPhoto Library that were not imported. Would you like to import them?"
Answered yes and it would begin the import again, but then crash again. Some of the image would import before the crash. I would then find a new folder in my Pictures folder with the photos that were not imported. The folder was named "iPhoto Library Recovered Photos"
In iPhoto, I would edit (rotate, crop) a photo that had been imported successfully. Then the black swatches would show up on the image.
When Terence Devlin asked about the color profile I tried an experiment. I opened each photo from its original location using Preview. Then I used Preview's Tool menu and chose "change color profile" and I selected the Adobe RGB (1998) and saved each image.
I then deleted my entire iPhoto Library file, relaunched iPhoto, dragged the scanned files (with the Adobe RGB color profile into iPhoto. Same problem as before, but 24 instead of 12 were able to successfully import after the first crash when it offered to reimport the un-imported images.
Humm. Then I noticed that 16 of the 76 image names began with a space. FIxed those and tried again. Still crashes iPhoto when it tries to complete the import when it's relaunched after the crash.

  • Iphone 4s pictures wont open can see but when try to open they turn black

Took pictures on my iphone 4s and i can see them in my photos but when I try to open it turns black. Any ideas.

My problem is when I take a picture and zoom it, the photo turns black. It lasted a few hours only. At first I was worried, so I find a way to recover the photo. Just by editing it using the "autoenhance wand", fortunately,  the photo reappeared but I was tired doing it so I tried restarting my phone and I took some photos again and then black pictures don't appear anymore. Just give it a try maybe this will help! God Bless!

  • Some pictures in I-Photo seem to be corrupted. When I click on them, the photo comes up for a second, then the picture turns black with a white fuzzy circle inside it and what looks like an explanation mark. Some older, some newer,  no common thread.

Some pictures in I-Photo seem to be corrupted. When I click on them, they come up for a second, then turn black with a white circle in the middle and what looks like an explanation mark. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to the photos that are a problem, some older ones, some newer, some albums have none, some albums have a lot.
    Thanks,
    Mark

time to time (when I have a chance), I will go to Finder, bring up ALL Images and start going through them to label them (before I put a label on them, they are simply listed as 123 jpg, 124 jpg etc.).
You're damaging the Library doing that, and that's the cause of your problem.
Never, ever, ever use the  All Images search and work on items in yoyr iPhoto Library. They must only be accessed via the iPhoto window.
Restroe from abck up or try rebuild the Library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Next: You need to learn how to use iPhoto. There's no need to be dragging things to the desktop:

  • I have a mac running iPhoto, please advise when I copy the photo to add to a document while creating a pictorial when it is pasted it turns black, I have tried many different methods to over come the issue but unsuccessful

My 6 month old Mac is using iPhoto. Please advise when I copy the photo from iPhoto to add to a word document while creating a pictorial artical as soon as it  is pasted the picture it turns black, I have tried many different methods to over come the issue but unsuccessful. In the past the iPhoo was default for direct download from a card, This I have now changed but in the meantime there are photographs that I need to use. I understand window completly but still on the nursery steps with Mac.
    Please advise Heather

As I said before I am reluctanct to delete and reinstall the iPhoto as I only have the one copy of the file i am using stored in iphoto file and I caint loose them.
All storage hardware and all computers will fail.  Volumes will get corrupted.  Mistakes will happen.
Please learn from our past mistakes and from our past data losses: please have and keep regular backups.
Either via Time Machine (which is marvelously transparent, and very easy), or backups created via some other mechanisms and tools.  Old Toad recommends an external disk, and that's very effective.  If this is a portable Mac, then Time Capsule devices are also very handy, as you don't have to remember to connect the backup device; so long as the Mac is within wireless range of the Time Capsule, backups will happen.
Time Machine backups can also be used to replace your files or even to upgrade to a new Mac, should your computer be lost or stolen, or should your computer or your storage fail.
If you have not already seen these, Mac Basics and Find Out How could be interesting.
As for your photos...   I wouldn't expect this to be iPhoto and wouldn't go for an iPhoto reinstall as the first step, I'd tend to wonder if this is a bug or feature in Microsoft Word, or possibly a format incompatibility with what Office supports.  iPhoto organizes and edits the photos that are stored in your ~/Pictures media directory.  Try using iWork (if you have that) or some other tool (Apple Mail) that accepts and processes photos, and see if you can localize the problem.  Depending on the image formats used, also see if exporting the picture from iWork into a jpeg-format picture — something other than the image format you're currently using with the Microsoft Office imports — works.  (FWIW, I use iWork for reading and writing Microsoft Office documents as well as Pages and Keynote files, and have been using iPhoto with those and other tools for many years, and haven't encountered these blacked-out images.)

  • Im using my Ipad 2 and sometimes when I try to look a photo on facebook te screen turns black

    Hey !
I was using my Ipad normally when I tried to look some photos on facebook and suddenly the screen turns black, but everything else works good, i just need to press "back button " and I can turn to Facebook and the screen looks normal.
I would really appreaciate if you can help me.
    Regards

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto turned most of my edited photos into black files without any previous versions

I discovered the issue when I tried to edit some photos and the edit screen only displayed noise. After trying the steps recommended here and rebuilding my library most of my edited photos were black... I tried to return them to their previous versions but there aren't any.
When I create a new library and import a single photo and then try to edit it the iPhoto edit screen still either displays an image with noise or a black one.
I really like iPhoto and hope this issue can be fixed!
    I'm using iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3 on OS X 10.8.3

This is really a puzzlement.  The last test I can think of is it could be a preference file other than iPhoto's.  Here's how to test that premise:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    1 - close all applications.
2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock.  You will be asked to provide your Admin password.
    4 - reboot.
5 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed
6 - If the problem is fixed:
    A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
B - Open the Preferences  folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.
    D - reboot.
7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.
    8 - reboot.
Also do you have access to another Mac that you can test editing some of the photos you're having problems with here?
Here's another test:  reformat the card in the camera or use another card, take some photos, import and edit.  This could tell if there's a problem with the file itself due to a corrupted card format.

  • Portrait photo's turn black after import

Since a few days portrait photo's display as black in iphoto. I don't know what happened, I didn't change settings or anything else.
    I have Iphoto V11, update 9.4.3.
I read about rebuilding the library by alt cmd during opening the program. Is there any risk involved? Im afraid to loose my photo's although I have a back up I don't want to mess with the current library if not necessary.
    Thank you!
