Photoshop CS3 Crashing consistently in Windows XP SP2

Hello, I'm using Photoshop from the Web Premium CS3 package on my Windows XP
machine.  I've never had problems with it in the past, but today when I've gone to use it it will consistently crash if I select File->New while I have a file already open.  I've never seen this behavior, but it's happening regularly at the moment.  I just did some Windows updates earlier today, so that could be an issue, but I've rebooted since then and so I'm not sure what is causing this problem or why.  If anyone else is seeing this I'd appreciate any insight you can offer on what the cause is or how to alleviate the problem.  Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

The first easy fix is to reset the prefs either by keyboard or the manual way, or try both. Your not running XP SP3?

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes on startup in Win 7 Prof 64 bit

    Hello everyone,
I'm not sure if this particular problem has been tackled before, if it has, I apologise in advance for double posting!
I have Photoshop CS3 as part of the Master Collection that I upgraded to from the old Macromedia Studio MX.  But recently, Photoshop CS3 crashes on start-up and returns the following error: "Adobe Photoshop CS3 has stopped working"
I am running it on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a system with the following specs:
    CPU: Intel® Core™i7 Processor Extreme Edition i7-975 (3.33GHz
    RAM: 12 GB
    Graphics Card: 2GB ATI RADEON™ HD 5970 PCI EXPRESS - DirectX® 11
    HDD: 2x 500 GB
I tried running it under various compatibility modes, but alas, no luck - stops right at the same problem.
I've noticed that it crashes where the loading screen says 'building TWAIN Menus'.  The software has been working without a hitch righ up until i tried installing my drivers for my old Dell all in one printer/scanner.  These DID have compatibility issues, but I cant find it anywhere on my system to remove them.  Or I might;ve removed them when applying a fix to remove it.
So I guess, it's the scanner software that is doing it.  (hence I might've answered my own question).
Has anyone experienced this problem? perhaps even with thier own printer/scanners etc?  Any ideas how this might be resolved?
Any advice or help would be appreciated, thanks in advance! :-)

    John Joslin wrote:
You should be able to remove the drivers in Device Manager – or just uninstall the Dell all-in-one.
You can also disable the TWAIN plug-in by putting a tilde in front of its name.
Fantastic!  Puting the tilde on the front of the twain plug-in has sorted it.  At least it's working until I can get the drivers off.  I tried disabling the drivers, no luck, tried removing from device manager, still no luck.  Thats something I'll need to sift through the Dell forums for.
But thankfully, Photoshop now boot and works.  Thanks guys!

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes when saving MAC OSX

Having problems with Photoshop CS3 crashing (Photoshop unexpectedly quit) when trying to save a file. Go to Photoshop/Preferences/File Handling/uncheck Version Cue. Seems that Version Cue is causing a lot of problems.

    >Seems that Version Cue is causing a lot of problems.
It always has. :/ It's an old story.
If you need Version Cue, check out this post:

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes when I try to print from Epson R2400

    Hi,
For no reason that I can see, when I try to print from my Epson R2400, Photoshop CS3 crashes.
It was working fine up to yesterday with no issues.
I have re installed the drivers etc but no use.
I also cannot choose Printer Manages Colors, as it is now greyed out.
When the the Printer dialogue opens and I click on the Page Set up I get the Error that "Photoshop CS3 has encountered a problem and needs to close"
    Any ideas please?

    Thanks for the replies.
I understand now that the procedure is probably the reason.
I was just experimenting as LAB colours are colours we see through our eyes, while RGB, CMYK etc are "computer" colours and so I use LAB colours a lot, before switching back to RGB.
I normally switch to LAB mode and click on the Lightness channel, then play with adjustments of that channel. This time I decided to mess around and see what would happen if I removed all channels except the Lightness one....
Converting to greyscale for me is not enough unfortunately and LAB B+W provides much better contrast and tone than hitting CTRL+Shift+U to greyscale.
Again, I understand what you say, my point being though that Photoshop should not crash because I incorrectly remove the channels, perhaps a warning to tell me I can't do it would be better.
I'll pass this onto Adobe anyway.
    cheers

  • How To Access Photoshop CS3 Crash Log

How do I access Photoshop CS3 Crash Logs?

Open Console and then, if the toolbar is not visible, choose *View > Show Toolbar*.
Press the Logs button and then navigate to ~/Library/Logs > CrashReporter or /Library/Logs > Crash Reporter and choose the Photoshop report.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes on "save as" command

    Hi all,
I'm running Photoshop CS 3 edition on Leopard. Photoshop crashes every time I try to "save as". Has anyone else experienced this issue? I have 2 gigs of ram on a new iMac.
    Thanks,
    John

I too am having the same issue with Photoshop CS3 crashing everytime I SAVE or SAVE AS, and when I choose File>open while the programs is running.
    I am running
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
Mac Book Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB RAM
I had been running the program successfully for over six months until a couple days ago.
I have verified/repaired permissions, reinstalled the entire Creative Suite, trashed preferences and reduced memory usage all with no luck.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashing on Save for Web & Devices

I'm having a problem with Photoshop CS3 crashing every time I use the "Save for Web & Devices" option. It allows me to open the dialog box and configure my file, but as soon as I click Save, it crashes. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, how did you resolve it?

Then manually remove the prefs by reading this:

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes every time I try  "safe as" command!

    Hi
My Photoshop CS3 crashes every time I try "safe as" command, I am on OsX 10.5.6. I tried to reinstall the problem is still there, permissions are fixed, I have no idea what happened. It worked for years without problems and now all of the sudden that. The only change I did on the machine is to install PGP.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks

    >It is not a notebook, but a MacPro 32GB RAM ( I think it should be enough) over 700GB for scratch and 160GB HD. I don't think that it is PGP, because the same configuration runs on my 2.6 Macbook Pro perfectly.
Understand that the two machines are not running
exactly the same configuration -- unless you've got 32GB RAM stuffed inside and have matching drives, applications, third-party software/utilities/plugins, OS, and application preference settings on both.
I'm trying to figure out what is different on the two systems.
Also, how did you prepare the computer when you ran upgrades? Did you run Disk Utility and DiskWarrior?

  • Photoshop cs3 crashed while i was working on a file...

photoshop cs3 crashed while i was working on a file. i checked the temp folder and found a file that was modified the day it crashed. there is no extension and when i tried to open it in photoshop it said that it "could not complete my request because the file is in use or left open"... is my file hosed or is there a way to recover it? i was working on it for hours and like a dummy forgot to save it

    Josh,
Someone had posted a link to such a program, as Mike mentioned. It was "supposed" to be able to dissect and restore from PS TMP files. I do not have a link, and also do not know the $, nor how effective this might be. I'd do a search of this forum, trying words like PS TMP, and the like. It was not THAT long ago. Again, have no experience with it (or any other TMP reclamation apps.). Might be worth a try.
All other comments on doing various forms of Save/Save_As are good ones. I'd incorporate those into my workflow, if you have not already.
You might want to look at Stellar-Phoenix for file recovery. Depending on where you were, when the crash happened, you might be able to locate your older
    b image
file on your HDD - or, you might not. Stellar-Phoenix had a trial. Seems that it would scan your HDD, but only the paid version would recover, if found. See if it finds something of use. I'd also do this,
    b before
anything else overwrites that/those sector(s) on your HDD . Probably not going to help, but you never know. Just to be clear, Stellar-Phoenix is a data recovery tool and is NOT a PS TMP file extractor.
Sorry about your misfortune and good luck,
    Hunt

I have an original version of Photoshop CS3.  I run Windows 7 32 bit.  After an update of the operating system by MS, my Photoshop refused to work, whereas before the MS update, the software worked perfectly.  Please help.  Ernst

    Dear Sir,
I have an original version of Photoshop CS3. I run Windows 7 (32 bit) on my PC.  After a recent (±2 months ago) update/upgrade by Microsoft of Windows 7 (32 bit) on my PC, I lost all functionality of the Photoshop software despite the fact that I have been running Photoshop CS3 on Windows 7 for the past 2 years without any problems. I uninstalled the software from my PC and tried to re-install it again.  It would not re-install.  After I press the software “setup” function to install the software, a window appears and a blue band runs across it, but then everything disappears from the screen again without leaving any message as to why the software would not install.
I have been informed by Adobe Helpdesk that Photoshop CS3 does not run on the Windows 7 OS.  Due to previous experience that Photoshop CS3 had in fact run on my PC on Windows 7, I find it totally strange that I could not install the software again.
In fact the, same version of Photoshop CS3 is currently running without any problems on my laptop under Windows 7 (64 bit).
    Please help if you can.
    Kind regards,
    Ernst Odendaal

  • Photoshop CS3 Crashes in many tasks

I have previously been using Adobe Creative Suite CS2 Premium Web Bundle where I work. I recently was able to get an upgrade to Adobe Design Suite Premium CS3. I am using version 10.0.1.0
The primary piece of software that I use is Photoshop. I had not had any problems running Photoshop CS2 on my computer in the past. When I upgraded to CS3, I constantly ran into problems with it crashing.
I soon discovered that it didn't upgrade to CS3, but instead installed side-by-side with CS2. I uninstalled CS2 and continued to have the same problems. I have tried a reinstallation of CS3 with no improvement. I have had so many problems that my network administrator replaced my computer with a new one. Installing the software there gave me the same problems.
The new computer has the same baseline image with Windows XP SP2 (32 bit). >Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
    > 6600 @ 2.40GHz
    >2.39 Ghz, 2.99 GB of RAM
There are so many operations that trigger a crash. To simplify things, I have found that the following steps are easily repeatable and guarentee a crash.
    *CTRL+N (New File)
    *ENTER (Ok button)
    *CTRL+A (Select All)
    *CTRL+C (Copy)
    *CTRL+N (New File)
    *ENTER (Ok Button)
    *Crash!
It keeps prompting me to send in error reports to Microsoft to check the status, but nothing ever comes back.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 crashing on start-up

When starting Photoshop CS3, I can get all the way to the "Initializing shared components" message before the program crashes and has to close. It does this during every start-up. The only major changes I made before the problem began was I uninstalled a Microsoft Office trial version, and also installed Vista Service Pack 1. Does anyone know of a way to fix it?
    System details:
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1 (32 bit)
    1GB RAM
    Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended V.10.0

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 crashing at open file screen

    Hi all
I've searched online but can't find a relative discussion or solution.
I have Adobe Photoshop CS3. My system is Windows 7 and it's 64-bit (that's about as far as my hardware/technical knowledge goes...).
The problem has only started happening today. Open PS, and go to FILE>OPEN. A sub screen is opened. On the left of this sub-screen are a variety of short cut locations such as 'My Documents', 'My Pictures' and 'My Computer'. Clicking on any of these shortcut tabs results in PS crashing.
The only thing I can think of that has changed since the last time I used PS CS3 on my machine (and I use it daily) is the following:
Installed trial version of Autodesk AutoCAD LT 2014
From this, to watch a Flash video of AutoCAD demo I had to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player (it was 2011 I believe).
Following the CS3 crashing problems I uninstalled Flash player and re-started but still no luck.
    Have not touched AutoCAD yet.
Any thoughts / comments? My company is looking to invest in AutoCAD so CS3 will need to learn to live alongside AutoCAD (IF AutoCAD is the problem, but I think this is unlikely).
Let me know what you all think!
    Thanks
    David

    Thanks for all the replies.
We (myself and our company IT guy) just tried several of the above, plus some other things.
    1. Shift/ctl/alt reset preferences. Did not solve the problem.
    2. Video driver upgrade. Did not solve the problem.
    3. Complete reinstall of CS3. Did not solve the problem.
    4. Install old video driver (apparently this solved a similar problem in another area of the company). Did not solve the problem.
    5. System rollback/restore (to 20-11-2013 settings). PROBLEM SOLVED!
We have a suspicion therefore that the Autodesk AutoCAD LT 2014 may be something to do with it. We will find out later/tomorrow as I need to get some stuff done in CS3 now (can't afford more lost time!).
Will update once we have reinstalled AutoCAD LT 2014 as to whether this changed anything.
    Thanks again
    David

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes when quitting

Hello! My Photoshop CS3 started crashing when quitting. I have Windows Vista. When I click [x] to quit, a box appears saying "Adobe Photoshop CS3 has stopped working" with button "close program", and then some problem report thing.
At first I tried reinstalling the software. It didn't help. Then I uninstalled the whole Photoshop and installed it again. It didn't help either. Now I have no idea what to do next. Does anybody have any solutions? Thanks

I'll pass this onto Adobe anyway.
    cheers
