PHP Insert record logic

Hello,
I'm coming up blank on the basic logic to insert a record based on results gathered to a form page. Inserting txt field entry items are are no problem but I have a displayed value created by polling another table, collecting the results, then passes the results to the form page and if there are no results displays a message in place of "the results".
I now want to simply (or obviously not for me) include "the results" as one of the values I am inserting from the form as a new record.
Using this code I gather my list of Models selected:
Code:

things grow cloudy....<br /><br />Seems I can only use the method once. IF used in the value of a text field it works:<br /><br /> <input type="text" name="selectedModels" id="selectedModels" value="<?php <br />       if ($totalRows_rsCookModels == 0) {<br />          echo ("No models selected") ; <br />} else { <br />do { <br />                    echo $row_rsCookModels['model_name']; <br />                    echo (", ") ;<br />                     } while ($row_rsCookModels = mysql_fetch_assoc($rsCookModels)); }?>"><br /><br />But then the later same code used to display the results to screen fails:<br /><br /> <?php if ($totalRows_rsCookModels == 0) {<br />          echo ("No models selected") ; // Show if recordset empty <br />} else {<br />          do {<br />     echo $row_rsCookModels['model_name'];<br />     echo (", ") ;<br />} while ($row_rsCookModels = mysql_fetch_assoc($rsCookModels));<br />          }<br />?><br /><br />But that same latter code works when the form field code is removed.<br /><br />Is there something that is wiping out some available value? Does the recordset expire after use? I'm sure I could create a different named record set but that seems to be less efficient.<br /><br />Any idea what new logic I need to grasp to understand the problem? Again should I be creating a var value of the string so t can be used multiple times in the same page? Is that the logic that escapes me? Us?

  • PHP Form Validation and Insert Records

    Hi There,
    I've been scratching my head for 2 days and couldn't find a solution.
    Here is my problem:
    Go to http://ecopethandbags.com/contactTest.php and click the "Send Comments" button.
    You will see that the validation works.
    Now, go to http://ecopethandbags.com/contactTestInsert.php, this time, I've inserted the "Insert Record" server behavior.
    Click the "Send Comments" button again.
    You will see the ugly message like "Column 'firstname' cannot be null" in a plain white page.
    My question is:
    How can I insert the PHP form records in my database and take advantage of the form validation nicely like in http://ecopethandbags.com/contactTest.php
    I am attaching the files.
    Thank you for you help!

    Use simple PHP logic to merge the scripts together.
    Dreamweaver automatically puts the Insert Record server behavior code at the top of the script. You need to adapt it so that the validation is done first. If the validation succeeds, use the Insert Record server behavior. If not, redisplay the form.
    if (array_key_exists('send', $_POST)) {
      // validate the form input
      if (!$suspect && empty($missing)) {
      // send the mail
        if ($mailSent) {
        unset($missing);
        // insert the Insert Record server behavior code here

  • Inserting records into Table with check table logic in place

    I want to insert records into a table, and have the check table to not allow invalid entries.  Is there a function out there that will allow this?  I am currently using the insert statement and it is working except that it is not giving an error when the value does not exist in the check table for the particular fields.
    INSERT INTO ZSD_XREF VALUES WA_XREF.
    That is the basic statement I'm using ZSD_XREF has several fields one being the material number field tied to the check table which happens to be MAKT file.  The insert statement is not validating the material numbers using the check table, or at least it is not giving an error.  Any ideas?

    Paul,
    Unfortunately, open SQL statements such as INSERT, UPDATE do not go through the check table logic as they directly hit the database layer. Check table checks are performed only if you go through application layer that is when you enter the same data through a screen.
    You have to do the checks yourself.
    Happy checking!!!

  • PHP/MySQL Insert Record

    I've got a multi page form that carries values across
    multiple pages with the use of Hidden Fields and then on last page
    inserts the record into a MySQL database (for this I used the built
    in Insert Record function of dreamweaver). My problem is that it
    works well when using Internet Explorer, values are carried forward
    and everything is inserted successfully to the database.
    But, when using Mozilla Firefox it looks as if it works, I
    get the confirmation at the end, but the record is not being
    inserted to the database. I've worked through this step by step and
    the values are being carried across in the hidden fields but it
    just will not insert anything to the database.
    Has anyone got any ideas??
    Thank you in advance.

    It's probably not so much MySQL syntax that's the problem for
    you, but a
    lack of understanding how to work with Dreamweaver
    recordsets, server
    behaviors, and sessions. Building database-driven sites with
    Dreamweaver
    isn't difficult, but there are a lot of things involved.
    The Log In User server behavior automatically creates a
    session variable
    called $_SESSION['MM_Username']. You can use this as a
    parameter to pass
    to the SQL query in the Advanced Recordset dialog box. In the
    SQL area
    you would type (I'm guessing the name of your table and the
    username
    column):
    SELECT landlord_id FROM landlords
    WHERE landlord_username = 'col1'
    Then click the plus button above the Variables area, and
    create a
    Parameter with the following values:
    Name: col1
    Default value: 1
    Runtime value: $_SESSION['MM_Username']
    You can then extract the result of the recordset, and assign
    it to a
    session variable like this:
    $_SESSION['landlord_id'] = $row_recordsetName['landlord_id'];
    > Also, I understand that I need to do this on the login
    page, but do I need to

    I guess I'm still not
    > quite clear on how I specify the session variable as the
    value that needs to be
    > entered in the sites table as the landlord_ID.
    As long as the session is still valid (which it would be if
    you use
    Restrict Access to Page), you will always have access to that
    landlord's
    id through $_SESSION['landlord_id'].

  • PHP URL Variable from Insert Record Issue

    I have a very simplistic forum style website I have put together. Everything is functionally properly except for one aspect. The basic structure is a page that lists the existing threads (ie: ThreadA, ThreadB, and ThreadC). I have the name of these threads stored in a MySQL database table that is used to generate a repeating dynamic table to grow as the number of threads increases. If the user clicks on one of these links they are taken to a page that displays all of the comments pertaining to that thread. All of the comments are stored in another MySQL database table. I perform a query on this comments page to filter the information in the comments database by the thread name which is passed over from the first page via a URL variable. The link attached to the name of the thread in the repeating table that generates the URL variable is "comments.php?thread=<?php echo $row_threads['threadName']; ?>" This works perfectly, If the user clicks on ThreadB they are taken to the comments page where only the comments pertaining to ThreadB have been filtered and displayed. After the user inserts a comment form ThreadB the comments page reloads displaying the newly created comment.
    Also, on the first page, the user has the option to create a new thread; call it ThreadD. The name of this new thread has to be inserted into two tables; one in the master threads table and one in the comments page any time someone adds a comment. (I'm sure there is a better way to structure this, but this was all I could figure out and for my purposes at hand it is sufficient). When the user is taken to this new comment page I have a query set up to pull the last entry in the threads table from the logged in user, ie the newly created thread topic. I have dragged this query to the page to make sure it is pulling the correct thread heading, and it works just fine. What I'm wanting to have happen is after the user enters the first comment I'm wanting them to be redirected to the main comments page with their new comment listed; giving the illusion that the new comment and existing comments page are the same. I'm trying to pass the newly created thread name, ThreadD, in the URL to the main comments page just like I do if they select it from the existing threads page. Under the insert record wizard I click the 'browse' button to select the comments.php page. I then select 'parameters' to add the thread name query as the URL parameter. The generated code is "comments.php?thread=" . $row_threadName['threadName'] . "". The user does go to the main comments page but the URL variable is not coming with it. What I'm left with in the address bar is ..."/comments.php?thread=&" , but it should be ..."comments.php?thread=ThreadD". I tried copying and pasting the URL link from the existing threads page since that works perfectly, and when I do that the main comments page shows up blank after being redirected from the new comments page. If I hard code this, for testing purposes, into the redirect after insertion section (ie: "comments.php?thread=ThreadD") everything works perfectly and the URL in the address bar of the main comments page is "...comments.php?thread=ThreadD&" I noticed the extra "&", but didn't give it much thought since the site is giving me the behavior I'm looking for. My question is, how do I get this new comment page to pass the variable of the newly created thread name to the main comments page to behave like it does when the thread is selected from the list of existing threads? I know it has to do with how the URL variable is either being generated or built from my query, or how I have it listed in the redirect section of the insert wizard, but I can't figure out where I am going wrong. Please let me know if there are any questions or if I need to clarify any aspect. Any and all help is always appreciated. Thank you.

    Ok, so just to summarize so I am understanding this correctly.  You have an ordering page for tires/wheels.  A customer places an order for tires/wheels and the data is submitted successfully and this includes a symbol for measurement (in.).  But on another summary page the symbol is returning a blank value.
    If this is correct we need to see:
    - First, the code that is inserting the symbol to the database table in question
    - Second, the query and code where you are printing the data to the screen.

  • PHP/MySQL-Update/Insert Record JavaScript Won't Work!!!

    Hi. I'm consistently running into the following error when I use the update or insert record script in CS4. I've tried deleting the FileCache file. I've tried quitting and relaunching, etc. Anyone else seeing this happen? Solutions anyone? Thanks in advance...
    I'm beginning to think it has something to do with the database, and not the script. Does anything in the screenshot below look wrong or problematic?
    Okay, I found the problem. Shouldn't be a problem, but it is...
    The Field name "length" changed to "height" eliminated the problem. So, you can't use the word "length" in a field? Sounds weird to me.

    There are lots of words you can't use for column names in MySQL, but "length" isn't one of them. See http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/reserved-words.html.
    The problem arises because Dreamweaver uses JavaScript behind the scenes to populate dialog boxes and build server behaviors. In JavaScript, "length" is the property of an array. I suspect the problem is that using "length" as a column name has given the relevant JavaScript used by Dreamweaver indigestion.

  • Insert record and email

    Hello
    How do I insert a record with the image filename into a database, then send the data just entered as an email?
    I was able to do this before but now this new CS3 seems so complicated!
    I am unable to just use an insert record behavior then add form fields and change the insert or update recored behavior like before.

  • Insert record works for me, but not my client...

    This is odd - I basically have an ADDT insert record page to add a database record, which as far as I know worked just as it should.
    But my client is saying it doesn't work on her machine - apparently when she hits 'add record' instead of going to the page confirming the record has been added, its just reloading a blank form on the add record page.
    I've just double checked on my machine, and it definitely works for me.
    She's definitely using the correct the URL.
    Its just using mySQL / PHP / phpMyAdmin
    Is there any reason at all that this should be the case, or any ideas what is causing it and what a solution might be?
    Thanks.

    Well, apparently its working for her now in Firefox, so looks like it may have something to do with IE8. I noticed on her screenshot there was something called Internet | Protected Mode : On - so maybe that's being over zealous in some way.

  • Insert record - works in FF and Safari, but not IE

    I think this is an odd one - I have a site which uses a
    fairly standard form to add a record to a database.
    I changed the input code to have an image as the button to :
    <input type="image" name="New Vehicle" id="New Vehicle"
    value="Insert record" alt="Add New Vehicle"
    src="../images/addvehiclebutton.jpg" />
    It worked in Safari, so I had no reason to think it wouldn't
    work in IE.
    All that happens is that the form resets.
    Can anyone shed any light on why it doesn't work in IE?
    Cheers.

    Iain71 wrote:
    > Can anyone shed any light on why it doesn't work in IE?
    Yes, IE doesn't send the name of an image used as a button.
    Instead, it
    sends the mouse coordinates. I can't remember offhand what
    names IE uses
    (it's probably something like mouseX and mouseY), but you can
    easily
    find out by displaying the contents of the POST array.
    Once you have found out, you need to change the conditional
    statement
    that checks the form to check for either the name of the
    button or one
    of the mouse coordinates.
    By the way, you have a space in the name and ID. That's
    invalid. Form
    element names and IDs should never include spaces or special
    characters.

  • Add date stamp to insert record

    This should be easy. I would think it's a standard procedure but 5 hours of searching the net, the forums, and experimenting has left me with a loss.
    I've created a simple form with 3 fields, firstName, lastName, eMail
    I've created a SQL database and table with the fields id, date, firstName, LastName, eMail
    The id is an int and the primary key, date is set to datetime the rest are varchar
    I've created a successful Insert Record behavior and now all I want to do is to update the date field with the datetime value when the record is added.
    Things I've tried include a java script to create a date variable, SQL NOW in various forms, a ton of other complex solutions. I've added hidden fields to the form, which got me the closest when I manually entered a value in the same format that I see in the SQL table when I add a row to the table from the PHP admin page.
    Please tell me this is not going to require 30 lines of code and another half day of fussing around.

    Hi Rick,
    Please tell me this is not going to require 30 lines of code and another half day of fussing around.
    with ADDT it´s pretty easy: just make sure that your datetime column gets ADDT´s "datetime" placeholder {NOW_DT} inserted as "entered value":
    Open the Insert Record Transaction dialog box, select the date column and define these settings:
    - Submit as: Date
    - Get value from: Entered Value
    - Value: {NOW_DT}

  • Insert Record not saving values

    Hi,
    I am extremely new to Dreamweaver. I am using MX2004.
    I am trying to work with a remote database that I created in
    MySQL and I am using PHP.
    I created a PHP page added my form, added my input fields,
    and used the Insert Record wizard to get to my database on the
    server. I also went to the columns section and where it says
    ‘Fieldname’ Does Not Get a Value. I went and chose my
    value from the drop-down Value box. It now says
    ‘Fieldname’ Gets Value From
    ‘FORM.Fieldname’ as ‘Text’ I have done that
    for all the columns that I am asking the users to fill in including
    the fields that are NOT NULL.
    The problem is once I test it, it is not putting the data in
    the database. When I go back and look at my columns in the Insert
    Record Server Behaviors, many of my columns have reverted to
    ‘Fieldname’ Does Not Get a Value.
    For some reason my values are not being saved.
    Can someone help with this?

  • Primary key violation when inserting records with insert_identity and ident_current+x

    My problem is this: I have data in a couple of temporary tables including
    relations (one table referencing records from another table by using
    temporary keys).
    Next, I would like to insert the data from the temp tables to my productive tables which have the same structure but their own identity keys. Hence, I need to translate the 'temporary' keys to regular identity keys in my productive tables.
    This is even more difficult because the system is highly concurrent, i.e. multiple sessions may try to insert
    data that way simultaneously.
    So far we were running the following solution, using a combination of
    identity_insert and ident_current:
    create table doc(id int identity primary key, number varchar(100))
    create table pos (id int identity primary key, docid int references doc(id), qty int)
    create table #doc(idx int, number varchar(100))
    create table #pos (docidx int, qty int)
    insert #doc select 1, 'D1'
    insert #doc select 2, 'D2'
    insert #pos select 1, 10
    insert #pos select 1, 12
    insert #pos select 2, 32
    insert #pos select 2, 9
    declare @docids table(ID int)
    set identity_insert doc on
    insert doc (id,number)
    output inserted.ID into @docids
    select ident_current('doc')+idx,number from #doc
    set identity_insert doc off
    -- Since scope_identity() is not reliable, we get the inserted identity values this way:
    declare @docID int = (select min(ID) from @docids)
    insert pos (docid,qty) select @docID+docidx-1, qty from #pos
    Since the request to ident_current() is located directly in the insert statement, we always have an implicit transaction which should be thread safe to a certain extend.
    We never had a problem with this solution for years until recently when we were running in occasional primary key violations. After some reasearch it turned out, that there were concurrent sessions trying to insert records in this way.
    Does anybody have an explanation for the primary key violations or an alternative solution for the problem?
    Thank you
    David

    >> My problem is this: I have data in a couple of temporary tables including relations (one table referencing records [sic] from another table by using temporary keys [sic]). <<
    NO, your problem is that you have no idea how RDBMS and SQL work.
    1. Rows are not anything like records; this is a basic concept.
    2. Temp tables are how old magnetic tape file mimic scratch tapes. SQL programmers use CTEs, views, derived tables, etc.
    3. Keys are a subset of attributes of an entity, fundamental characteristics of them! A key cannot be temporary by definition.
    >> Next, I would like to insert the data from the temp tables to my production tables which have the same structure but their own IDENTITY keys. Hence, I need to translate the 'temporary' keys to regular IDENTITY keys in my productive tables. <<
    NO, you just get worse. IDENTITY is a 1970's Sybase/UNIX dialect, based on the sequential file structure used on 16-bit mini computers back then. It counts the physical insertion attempts (not even successes!) and has nothing to with a logical data model. This
    is a mag tape drive model of 1960's EDP, and not RDBMS.
    >> This is even more difficult because the system is highly concurrent, i.e. multiple sessions may try to insert data that way simultaneously. <<
    Gee, that is how magnetic tapes work, with queues. This is one of many reasons competent SQL programers do not use IDENTITY.
    >> So far we were running the following solution, using a combination of IDENTITY_INSERT and IDENT_CURRENT: <<
    This is a kludge, not a solution.
    There is no such thing as a generic “id” in RDBMS; it has to be “<something in particular>_id” to be valid. You have no idea what the ISO-11179 rules are. Even worse, your generic “id” changes names from table to table! By magic, it starts as a “Doc”,
    then becomes a “Pos” in the next table! Does it wind up as a “doc-id”? Can it become a automobile? A squid? Lady Gaga?
    This is the first principle of any data model; it is based on the Law of Identity; remember that from Freshman Logic 101? A data element has one and only one name in a model.
    And finally, you do not know the correct syntax for INSERT INTO, so you use the 1970's Sybase/UNIX dialect! The ANSI/ISO Standard uses a table consrtuctor:
    INSERT INTO Doc VALUES (1, 'D1'), (2, 'D2');
    >> We never had a problem with this solution for years until recently when we were running in occasional PRIMARY KEY violations. After some research it turned out, that there were concurrent sessions trying to insert records [sic] in this way. <<
    “No matter how far you have gone down the wrong road, turn around.” -- Turkish proverb.
    You have been mimicking a mag tape file system and have not written correct SQL. It has caught up with you in a way you can see. Throw out this garbage and do it right.

  • Problem inserting record using INSERT INTO

    I am an amateur web builder using some ColdFusion functionality to access information on an Access database. I know very little about ColdFusion syntax, but I'm using Dreamweaver CS3 to help generate most of the code. I'm working on an insert record page to create a user database with login information. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm getting a syntax error referencing this particular portion of the code:
    Syntax error in INSERT INTO statement.
    The error occurred in C:\ColdFusion9\wwwroot\Everett\register.cfm: line 22
    Below is the entire page with line 22 (referenced in the error message) in red. Any ideas?

    Syntax error in INSERT INTO statement.  INSERT INTO Users ([First Name], [Last Name], [Email Address], Password)
    That oh-so-uninformative error is because "Password" is a reserved word with your database driver.  Either escape it by putting square brackets around it too, or rename the column permanently. It is best to avoid using reserved words whenever possible. So renaming the column is the better option.  Also, I would try and avoid using invalid characters like spaces in column names ie "First Name". It is technically allowed, but it requires special handling everywhere which adds unecessary complexity.
    I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm getting a syntax error referencing this particular portion of the code:
    Do not take the error line numbers as gospel. Sometimes they just indicate that the error is within the vincinty of that line.
    I'm using Dreamweaver CS3 to help generate most of the code
    Unforutnately, DW wizards generate some truly awful and verbose code.  To give you an idea, here is what the query should look like, without all the wizard nonsense.
      <cfparam name="FORM.first_name" default="">
      <cfparam name="FORM.last_name" default="">
      <cfparam name="FORM.email" default="">
      <cfparam name="FORM.FORM.password" default="">

    CF is pretty easy to learn. You might want to begin perusing the CF documentation and a few tutorials to get more familiar with the language. Since you are working with a database, I would also recommend a  SQL tutorial.

    You didn't mention what DBMS or scripting language you are using.
    The best way to get dates from a user is to supply 3 fields for input; day, month, year - then assemble them into the string format that the DBMS is expecting.
