Pixelated jerky render

I have an hour and fifteen minute sequence that is comprised of slowed-down footage. I lowered the black levels with the Color Corrector Three way filter on all shots as well. When I render this sequence it comes out looking horrible - pixelated, lurching heinousness. I have shorter sequences that I have treated the same way and the results have been perfect - no pixelated jerky-ness. I am wondering what my next steps are - Is it the color corrector filter? Is it the length of the sequence?
THanks in advance for any help on this.

Are you viewing the footage on an external monitor or are you viewing it strictly on the canvas? The canvas displays a proxy view of the sequence and you can never really tell the true colors and quality of the image from it.
What is the final destination of the video? Web, TV, DVD?
Try exporting a small part of the sequence in your desired export setting and view that small portion on whatever medium is going to be the final destination and judge the footage that way.

  • Particles pixelated on render in Motion 5

I have a few particle generators going on in this video. One of them is Crazy Weightless Sparks. The rest are fine, but that one looks very pixelated upon export. It looked fine in the preview, although my computer has difficulty viewing that part in Motion. The resolution is 1080p. I do switch the resolution to quarter while I'm working but I switched it back before rendering. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

If you're exporting as PR4444 (which is default) - premultiply alpha should be set, otherwise, you can have that option turned off. Setting render quality to Best also helps. Both of those options can be accessed in the Export dialog under the Render tab (as well as most other options that override canvas settings.)
... other than that, I don't know why the export should be pixelating.

  • Jerky render of QT movie

I have a new iMac and AE CS4.
I created a short animation - nothing fancy - an image going across the screen in front of a background.
First.. it seems to take a long time to render.
Second, even on QT output, it jerks a bit on playback in QT player.
It's ANIMATION codec, which I guess could be the problem, but I thought
a 3.2 gig Intel would be fairly powerful. Haven't checked it on my G5.

Stylish machines, those 27" iMacs. Not enough RAM and a bit weak on graphics, though. I think we can exclude the effects from our considerations, as in terms of processor power, they would probably be pretty near-realtime on such a machine. As stated in my initial post, I suspect it's the graphics. 256 MB is not much for so many pixels. going with one of the 512MB cards would probably have been a better choice. Additionally, there may be some lag in reading the files from the disk during playback. One thing I forgot to mention are fields. If you render with fields or your soure footagte has fields and you did not set footage interpretation accordingly, it may look jittery on teh computer, but would probably look just fine on a normal TV. So look into that as well, if you haven't already. In any case, try to render a H.264 version of your stuff and see, if it plays any better. At least it would rule out the data rate issue.

  • Pixelated FCP Render of linked .motn file using LiveFont

I have a clip that I've used the "Send To" feature to open in Motion. While there, I added two bits of text using LiveFonts (blueprint and timer).
It looks crisp as can be in Motion. I save it, Apple-Tab back into FCP and get the momentary "Media Offline" while it updates.
In the canvas, the frames look every bit as good and sharp as in Motion. I then render the sequence and the results are hideous... but only on the "timer" font. I had the same results using the "flip counter" LiveFont. The "blueprint" font, however, looks fine before and after the render.
The same fonts rendered in LiveType look gorgeous. I can overlay them in Motion just fine. I can use them directly in Motion and export a lossless quicktime (Animation format) and they look fine.
If I use Send To, though, to take advantage of the convenient workflow, I'm required to render in FCP and the results are hideous.
Does anyone know if this is a common problem or if there is some kind of workaround?
Here is a link to a sample JPEG showing the canvas window and the rendered output in FCP:
    http://www.halfpress.com/images/font-problems.jpg
Keep in mind that these are two qualities are visible within FCP side by side using the same data. I choose a frame in my crappy rendered output, hit f to match-frame and am presented with pristine on the left and hideous on the right... but again, only for one of the fonts.
    Appreciate any help!
    - Aaron

Thanks. Actually, that seemed to do it... or very close. I also tried the Animation codec and it appears to be an even more precise match to the Motion source than the uncompressed 8-bit.
I had ruled that out initially because exports I did from Motion itself to the DV format looked semi-cruddy, but nowhere NEAR as bad as what FCP was rendering. That made me start thinking FCP was internally hosing the source when it renders.
I will say that FCP is rendering the drop shadows differently from the Motion source than Motion is previewing and rendering internally.
So is this procedure of running the finished sequence through a new timeline with a better codec pretty standard?
Another thing I had tried before posting my original question was exporting my working DV sequence with Compressor to a better higher quality format to see if it improved. I was doing this to see if only the editing process looked bad and maybe it would internally re-render through compressor to a higher quality. It seems it just renders from the nasty DV source even when going through compressor.
Now assume I need to drop it in a new sequence within FCP using Animation or Uncompressed 8-bit, render, and THEN export to compressor?
Trying to ascertain if this is a hack/workaround or legitimately "the way things should be".
    Thanks!

  • Unable to render 7 x 7 pixel movie in AE CS5

    When I try to render a 7 x 7 pixel movie in CS5 the final result is a 16 x 16 pixel movie.
Comp settings are 7 x 7 square pixels. Render Setting  is Best  and Output Module is Lossless.
Both Crop & Resize in Output Module Settings are unchecked but Output Module Setting displays the following dialogue in settings mismatch.
The (time consuming and annoying) workaround has been to recreate the project in CS3.
Is there anyway to overide these "format constraints"?
    thanks
    Pip

    Hi Pip,
I was the Quality Engineer who tested the exporter constraints in After Effects CS5.  Todd and I agreed that publishing the full list of constraints isn't useful because so much of it is dependent on the particular format, and often the particular settings (codec, profile, level, etc.) within that format, and that the bulk of the list would be noise.  Also, I stand by Todd's assertion in his article that the dialog does a sufficient job of informing users about the constraints when they hit them; us publishing a separate list wouldn't add much value, as you're not going to search for such a thing before you encounter the problem.
The basic answer to your problem isn't any different than what the others here have recommended: you will need to use a different application or an older version of AE to encode 7x7 QuickTime files.
Can you elaborate on how you use 7x7 pixel files?  What is the product and/or service that requires a file of that size?  It's important for us to understand your workflow; it helps us make better decisions about the change we might make for future releases.
Related to this, after releasing After Effects CS5 we received some complaints about the new minimum size constraints.  The workflow in those cases was for stadium video boards, which can have a very small minimum height.  So for AE CS5.5, we reduced the minimum size to 8x8 pixels, which was small enough for that workflow, according to the users we were talking to.
Why the minimum constraints at all?  It's not directly caused by the 64-bit upgrade as alluded to by Mylenium, but that's part of the story.
Older versions of After Effects used the QuickTime API directly; we talked to QuickTime and passed it the frames to encode.  Because there is no 64-bit version of the QuickTime encoding API, we couldn't do that with the new 64-bit architecture After Effects CS5.  We use our own 64-bit encoding framework, shared with Premiere Pro and Adobe Media Encoder, and use a 32-bit intermediate process to talk to QuickTime.  Our encoding framework is where the minimum size constraints are imposed.
We changed the minimum size constraint once.  It's feasible we could change it again in a future release if you or other users can provide us with a good use case for it.  I won't promise anything.  Please keep in mind that us making such a change isn't a simple matter; besides the actual engineering work, the change will need to be tested and verified (it's functional and doesn't cause new bugs) across several different applications (AE, Premiere, AME, others) under a variety of conditions.
Feel free to PM me through this forum if you'd rather not discuss details of your workflow in a public forum.

  • How is the font size calculated in pixel sized documents?

    Hello to all,
I am working with Illustrator CS4 on a web design. In the document setup, I set the size to 1000*1600 pixels. Then, I tried to add some text in font size 12 pt. The font appears *very* small. My objective was to use the same font size settings in my Illustrator file as I will later do in the HTML/CSS coding. How do I get Illustrator to scale the fonts in the same way as the browser does - i.e. a 12 pt text in the browser has the same size as a 12 pt text in Illustrator? Infact, I am looking for a setting where I can define the resolution of text size calculation.
    Best regards
    Joerg

Illustrator is a print-oriented, object-based vector drawing program, not a web-oriented, pixel-based raster painting program.
Illustrator's ruler is designed to represent real-world measure, not counts of pixels.
A pixel is not a measure. Pixels have no real-world measure.
Therefore, when Illustrator's ruler pretends to represent "pixels," it has to assign some real-world scale to them. It defaults to the measure of a point. A point is a real-world measure.
Similarly, a computer's operating system has to decide how many screen pixels it will use to represent a real-world measure at 100% zoom.
Mac OS defaults to using 1 pixel to represent 1 point. (72 PPI)
Windows and web browsers default to using 1.33 pixels to represent 1 point. (96 PPI)
So tell a browser to display 12 point type, and it will use 16 pixels to do that.
Given Illustrator's default that 1 pixel measures 1 point at 100%, Illustrator uses about 9 pixels to render the cap height of 12 point Verdana.
GIven the browsers' default that 1 point renders to 1.3 pixels, the browser uses about 12 pixels to render the cap height of 12 point Verdana.
So given that Illustrator and the browser are going to use different numbers of pixels to rasterize 12 point type, how do you get a browser to use the same number of pixels to render 12 point Verdana as Illustrator does? Simple: Specify the type size in the HTML code by pixels, not by points. This is a screenshot of Internet Explorer on Windows displaying a web page which contains:
A raster image of 12 point Verdana exported from Illustrator, using its default 72 PPI rasterization
Live 12 pixel Verdana HTML text.
Live 12 point Verdana HTML text.
Inversely, there are other ways to work around Illustrator's 72 PPI default when you want to rasterize Illustrator type so that it looks the same as the same-point-size text in HTML.
When using Save For Web & Devices, specifiy 133% instead of the default 100%.
Scale the artwork to 133% before exporting via Save For Web & Devices using the default 100%
When rasterizing, rasterize to 96 PPI instead of 72 PPI. (1.33 as many pixels)
When exporting, export to 96 PPI instead of 72 PPI. (1.33 as many pixels)
Or, do what I do: Get a decent screenshot utility. When I want to rasterize something from Illustrator that contains text that I want to appear online at the same scale that it appears to me when working in Illustrator, I simply zoom to 133% and take a screenshot.

  • How can I fix wrong pixel aspect?

    System(s):
    OS X 10.4.9
    FCP 5.1.4
    Color 1.0.1
    Xsan 1.4.1v81
    Aja Kona 3
    Panasonic AJ-HD1400 decks
Offline / Online workflow: Capture DVCproHD material from tape (not P2) at offline RT using multiple stations to capture to XSAN. Then online / uprezz using DVCProHD 1080i 29.97 (Aja Kona 3) using standard media manager process. Use 2 stations to uprezz by duplicating project and doing half tapes on one station, half on the other. Then choose one project as the master project and reconnect the tapes captured on the other station to the master project.
The problem: The tapes that have to be reconnected in the master project come out with square pixels flagged when you look at their format information. The pixels should be HD (1280x1080). In FCP this doesn't seem to matter - it comes out looking fine. However, when we export an XML and take it into Color, the clips with square pixels come out squished, with geometry settings applied. We can fix this by resetting the geometry. However, when we render these projects out and bring them back into FCP the square pixel clips render the interlacing wrong - they kind of bake both fields into one, creating a strange 'ghosting' effect on footage with a lot of motion in it.
There is a workaround fix - we can change the pixel aspect in FCP before making the XML. This fixes the problem. However in a show that contains over a thousand clips this is laborious - each clip has to be done individually. And if we do two or three shows a week.....that is a lot of wasted time.
Has anyone experienced this? Got a good solution?

Reasons for using FCP 5.1.4 and Color 1.0.1 are a bit involved, but basically to do with the compatibility of our version of XSAN with later versions of OSX. Until we upgrade the XSAN we cannot go to the most recent versions of OSX, which are required by the most recent versions of FCP. We do not want to go to FCP 6 until we can go to FCP 6.0.4, which has fixed certain problems with the media manager in earlier versions of FCP. In order to upgrade the XSAN I have been told we need to upgrade hardware switchers - not just software....
Prior to using Color we used Final Touch HD, so Color is effectively the more recent version of Final Touch for us.

    Two things:
    1. Color doesn't know how to properly display DVCProHD (or any anamorphic footage), so it looks wrong while working. Believe it or not, this is normal (for Color). Try setting the sequence in FCP to anamorphic and see what that does for your Send to Color.
    2. The Geometry room is broken with interlaced material. The moment you touch the Geometry Room in any way, Color field-blends the footage upon render. Even after you reset the Geometry Room. Once the footage has been user-altered in that Room, the footage is forever toast and will only render out properly if starting from scratch in a new project. It's a major bug.

  • Anyone understand the purpose of Proxy render/output format?

So I've done a couple of projects with X now and am fairly happy with the proxy workflow:
    1) Ingest, creating proxies, but no optimized - render format set to ProRes regular
    2) Edit in proxy
    3) In preferences, switch back to "Use original or optimized"
    4) Tweak edit
    5) Render and export
However, I'm still not understanding the thinking behind the render/output format (full-resolution proxy) when you are editing in proxy. It seems to me that it SHOULD be:
EITHER: When you're editing proxy, if you render/export, FCPX renders/outputs in proxy using the same low resolution as your proxy files. This would be great for early, quick samples for clients. No need to spend forever rendering full-res ProRes regular, or the pointless upsizing of pre-rendered lo-res proxies.
OR: Even while you're editing from proxies, background rendering is done in your full-quality format (i.e. 1080 ProRes regular). This would save you from re-rendering when you switch back over to original/optimized.
Ideally, there'd be a toggle to choose which of these you want. Even without a toggle, Apple should pick one of these it seems. The way it is now seems useless.
    SUMMARY:
While editing in proxy, render/output should be either:
    1) 720x540 ProRes Proxy
    OR
    2) 1920x1080 ProRes Regular
    BUT NOT
    3)1920x1080 ProRes Proxy
I was going to send an enhancement request about it, but figured I'd first see if anybody knows of a useful reason for it instead being this third, awkward format.
    Thoughts?

I had hoped the summary would clear up the question. I guess not. Let's try this again:
QUESTION - Would other people like the output, when in proxy mode, to be a low-res ProRes Proxy file - the same size as the files that are created when you tell FCPX to make proxies of your original files?
    DETAILS
    - When you create proxies of your original files, they are a low-resolution of "something"x540 (in my case 720x540)
    - If you output while in proxy, you get a proxy output file at 1920x1080 - this is 5.3 times as many pixels to render as 720x540.
    - Assuming a linear relationship between number of pixels and render time, this means it would take over 5 times as long to render the current form of proxy output, as compared to what I'm asking for.
    - I want a quickly-rendered format (like 720x540 Proxy) so I can quickly render/output, change things, re-render/output, sending multiple sample files to the client.
    - Of course, the ability to mark in/out on the timeline and export just that section is also important here, but that's another post and has already been discussed.
    - For further details, see my original post
As for my workflow, I don't need to work with either/or. I work in proxy (which, if you're doing more than straight cuts, allows better playback before rendering, no matter what computer you're using) until I'm ready for the final tweaks to graphics or the edit that actually rely on fine detail, and want to output in 1080 Prores regular, at which point I change the preference back to original/optimized, like I said right at the start of the first post. No mind reading necessary. I then tweak, render and output. I'm not sure you're understanding the purpose of a proxy workflow.

  • Still image render times

I have been importing some jpegs into a 10-minute FCE 4.0.1 project. I have applied fade-in/fade-out, keyframes and some motion blur to each, but nothing excessive. The render times, however, are astonishing: nearly an hour for each picture and getting longer with every successive picture I add to the timeline. I would expect effects to slow things down, but not to that extent.
I don't believe the hardware is a limitation and drive space isn't an issue, but would there be something wrong with settings or workflow?
The images are slotting into a 1920x1080 video made of 29.97fps HD clips, imported via MPEG Streamclip / AIC. The clips have been rendering quickly, but the stills are slooooooooooooooow.
    Am I missing/misunderstanding something obvious?

    Tom/David:
    Thanks for your replies.
The images come from various sources (self-shot digitally, scanned from old prints, provided from other people's iPhoto archives, bought from online libraries etc), so their specs vary quite a lot. Some are mono. some are color.
Item Properties in FCE tells me that the smallest is 300x396 photo-JPEG, square pixels. The largest is 5096x5100 photo-JPEG, square pixels. Render times seem not to depend on image size or the degree of scaling down or scaling up to fit the project. It's always between 45mins and one hour per image. Where would I find more-detailed information on each image (RGB 8-bit, for instance), if that is crucial?
I render between adding each pic because I like to check that each pic's timing is frame perfect. Exasperated by the render time after the first couple of pics, I figured that I might proceed more quickly if I added three images on the timeline at once and then rendered. The render simply took three times as long.
The sequence spec is HD, 29.97fps, AVCHD AIC 1920x1080i60

  • Illustrator and pixelation..

Hello everyone: I created a logo on illustrator to which I applied Gaussian Blur on a line going across the object. It looks pretty good when its zoomed in, but as I zoom out I see that it becomes pixelated. Its been rasterized with a high resolution. What should I do to get rid of the pixelation?
    Have a prosperous night,
    Marisol

Show us what you mean: provide a screen capture of the pixelization you are worried about.
My guess, though, is that there is no problem and Illustrator is just scaling the raster poorly, perhaps because the resolution of the effect does not mesh with the screen resolution. Note that Illustrator’s 100% assumes a 72 ppi display resolution, regardless of the actual display resolution. So a 1 inch square viewed at 100% will use 72 display pixels to render. I the raster effect resolution is 300 ppi and you view the artwork at 100%, the effect has to be scaled to 24%, which is not an easy, uniform scale.
Try temporarily changing the raster effect resolution to 288 ppi, then viewing at 100%, which will scale the effect to 25%. Smoother, no? OK, change it back to 300 now that you know what the real problem is.

  • Measure in pixels...are those numbers false?

bad subject line but this is what I mean...
Im starting a new illustrator document. I set the measurements at 1920px X 1080px. I then create my art. I then notice when I open up that same document, or a JPG or any other export of my creation in Photoshop or any other program, it says the pixel size is 8000 x 4500. I want to be able to start my Illustrator file at the exact dimensions I need without having to bring it into PHotoshop (tends to degrade a little that way). Am I not understanding something correctly? Ive notice this with CS2 and CS3 so I assume its not a glitch. Does "px" not stand for pixels?

Render at 72 ppi to get the same size in Photoshop.

  • Adobe Air HTML & JS Developing - Slow on massive Image-Tags

    Hello,
I want to share a problem i noticed while developing an application with adobe air, based on the HTML & JS Stack, which uses multiple image-tags at the same time. I already mailed a bug but unfortunately did not get a bug number responded to refer to hit here. This post is started because i wanted to share a simple example which exhibits the problem.
    The Bug Report i mailed:
    ******BUG******
Concise problem statement: Performance Issues with massive Image-Tags (scaled)
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Create a simple Air-Application. No need for any Air-specific library we just want the Air-Webkit to render a HTML-Page
    2.  Load ~130 Pictures with a dimension of approximately 1024 x 768 pixels.  Render each of them as a scaled Image-Tag with the dimension 100x60  pixels.
    3. Load the Page in the Air/Safari/Firefox/IE Environment (Versions: Air 2.5, Safari 5.0.2 (Win XP), FF 3.6.10, IE7)
    4. Try scrolling down/left/right/up and resizing the respective stage
Results: The Air Environment performs worst among those 4. It reacts unacceptably slow while trying to resize and to scroll.
Expected results: similar performance to Webkit-Engine in Safari.
I know of one other discussion which seems to be related to a similar thing (http://forums.adobe.com/message/44913).
The Page i used to compare the Adobe-Air rendering & scroll behaviour against the behaviour of Safari, FF and IE is posted beneath (pretty long due to the excerpt of 131 pictures taken of flicker web service).
    with best regards

  • Rotating pictures and rectangles in illustrator cs4. (WHY DO THEY LOOK WARPED/TRAPAZOID)

Can anyone help me with rotating pictures and square shapes in illustrator cs4.
When i rotate a square/rectangle or picture it seems to distort the shape and picture.  Say I rotate something 30 degrees by using the menu or free drag. the square/rectangle doesn't maintain it's 90 degree angles. You can notice it's kind of warped some.
Someone said hold down shift and I did all that does is lock the rotation to 45 degrees.....
    I'm on a pc.
    Thanks

Which I wonder why that is even in there?! If it will throw off things.
CRTs are glass screens coated with dots of phospor that light up when excited by an electron beam. They don't have physical "borders" for each of the "pixels" they render. So they are much more forgiving about displaying different aspect ratio images. An LCD monitor is made up of discrete cells. Set it to an aspect ratio by which the number of cells is not divisible and you get not only the ugly disproportionate scale, but also a hideous blurring effect.
It never ceases to amaze me the number of users (even mechanical engineers) who tolerate this, as if completely oblivious to it. It's also amazing to me how many people also watch movies on supposedly "high def" TVs which display Sandra Bullock's (and everyone else's) head at 1.5 times its proportional width, and never seem to notice.
I set my monitor to that native resolution and I believe that fixed things. Only thing is all my icons etc are really small.
If the size is a problem, use a setting that is the same aspect ratio as, and half the pixel count of the native resolution. In other words, tell your monitor to use four of its hardware cells to display each pixel, instead of one. But if you choose a setting that effectively tells it to use, say, 1.5 cells for each pixel, sharpnes is...well...going down the tube, because it can't actually do that.
Me, I always set my LCDs to their actual hardware resolution at their native aspect ratio.

  • Aspect ratio inappropriate with final result

hi guys.. we meet again..   i get a problem here.. look at the picture below..
above one is my comp when i make it to the final result below.. how to setting my comp to make it look the same with the final video? the final comp has a widescreen perfectly. but my comp not.. im using AE CS5 10.0.458

You can either turn on Pixel Aspect Ratio correction in the Composition window or change your composition settings to the default NTSC DV Widescreen Square Pixel preset. Your frame rate is wrong for this preset however. If you are going to DVD then you should be either using 29.97 fps for NTSC video, or you should be using the PAL Widescreen Presets. I believe, and so does Wikipedia, that Indonesia is a PAL country until 2018. Your Comp Settings should look like this for NonSquare pixels:
    Or this for Square Pixels:
A render from either will go into any program that builds DVD's. A render from the Square Pixel setup will work perfectly on the web for YouTube or Vimeo while a render from the NonSquare comp settings will have problems displaying correctly on a computer monitor or on the web.
Just one more thing. If you are creating artwork for this project in Photoshop or Illustrator then you should use 1050 X 576 pixels for your frame size. That sized image will fit perfectly in either composition.
