Playing mp3s in Safari...

I did a search, and my problem is essentially the same as this archived topic, though obviously with newer versions of iTunes and Safari (6.0.4 and 2.0.3 respectively).
So really the problem is that Safari now automatically downloads mp3s to play in iTunes, when it used to play them in their own window with what appeared to be QT.
The keys here are that a) my hard drive crashed about a month ago, and it is since that repair that the change occurred; and b) I have tried seemingly every QT MIME setting, from checking all the related boxes to none, and many settings in between.
I, like the author of the archived topic, think it has something to do with iTunes defaulting itself. That's the part that I'm most hesitent to mess around with, because while I want online mp3 links to play in Safari via QT, I also want to maintain iTunes as the default player for mp3 files on the computer itself. I had managed to obtain this balance on my previous settings (ie. before the crash) so I know it can be done.
Thanks,
dan

Using defaults read com.apple.launchservices ( take great care using Terminal !! ) may give some clues too.

  • Safari no longer plays mp3 files (OS X 10.9.5 Safari 7.1). Help!

I have a 6-month-old MacBook Pro (13" Classic) running OS X 10.9.5. I use Safari 99% of the time to browse the web (version 7.1). Quicktime Player 10.3.
All of a sudden (this week), Safari has stopped playing mp3 files. I have always been able to click on a link to an mp3 file and it would play in the browser. Now, this has stopped working. It does open a black page with the audio scroll bar showing. However, the arrow will not respond if I click it and it just says "Loading..." forever.
    What's up?!

Force quit Safari and relaunch it while holding down the shift key.

  • Safari 4.0.5. problems playing mp3 files.

    Hi,
I'm having trouble playing mp3 files on my iWeb created website. When I use Safari (4.0.5) to browse, Safari does not display the player part of the mp3., and on my welcome page, it does not play the music that's set to autoplay.
When I use Firefox to browse the same website, all mp3 files work fine, including the mp3 set to autoplay on the welcome page !
I also tested browsing with Safari 4.0.4 running on OSX 10.5.8, (on another computer), and it works fine !
I'm guessing this means something is buggy with Safari 4.0.5. running on OSX 10.6.3. or could it be something else ?
Anyone notice this type of issues with Safari 4.0.5. ?
    Some feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Thanks for confirming that you are experiencing a similar issue when using Safari 4.0.5 and try to play your mp3 files. As I mentioned earlier, Firefox displays, and plays the files perfectly !
This must be some kind of bug in 4.0.5. that Apple needs to fix.
I already sent Apple a bug report.
By the way, I used another computer running OSX 10.5.8 and Safari 4.0.4 to test my site, and found no issue, Safari 4.0.4 works fine, it played the autoplay mp3 file, and displayed the mp3 player without any issues. Which seems to indicate that this is a Safari 4.0.5. issue.

  • Why will Safari not play MP3s embedded in my iWeb pages when Firefox can?

One would have thought that if iWeb was going to get picky over the scenarios in which it would behave correctly, it would favour Apple-centric enviroments. But this doesn't appear to be the case when building an iWeb site with embedded MP3 files.
The published site behaves perfectly when viewed in Firefox and yes, even IE's latest incarnation. Files may take a while to download but they play when the download has finished. Safari is a different story. The MP3 files embedded in some pages simply will not play when viewed with Safari.
This page in particular has never worked in Safari -
    http://www.whisperycat.co.uk/version_5/sounds/Entries/2011/3/23_Promenade.html
A small blue questionmark appears instead of the 'Play' button.
Any workarounds or is it just the case that Safari and iWeb are incompatible on this fundamental point???

Well it looks as though I answered my own question. A Google search revelas that Safari has had over 2 years' history of reported problems with the mp3 format -
    http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=safari+wont+play+mp3&ie=UT F-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=nkulT9_wA82g8gOPj8ntBA
    - and the solution is... STOP USING MP3 FILES
Yes, mp3 format is out, mp4 format is in. SO I'll need to upload MP4 versions of my audio files and then retry.

  • Safari 4 won't play mp3s

Safari 4 quits every time I try to play mp3 files on websites. If I want to hear the audio content I'm forced to re-open the page in a different browser. Safari 3 worked fine!
    Any help in solving appreciated

    HI,
Uninstall and reinstall the Flash Player plugin and see if that helps.
    Go here to uninstall Flash.

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

When you are finished uninstalling the old Flash plugin, go here and install a fresh copy
of Flash Player plugin.

As with any software installations, repair disk permissions.

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Safari won't play mp3 - only downloads the files

Very annoying, this: I am running Safari 5.1.4 on a Lion MacBook Pro (latest version of Lion), but for some reason it won't play mp3 files - it always ends up downloading them.
However, if I try the same web page with the same mp3 files on, say, Chrome, they play just fine.
    How can I fix this?

Thanks for the reply, but that's not what I want at all - it's too inconvenient.
I want mp3 files etc. to play back from *within* Safari, like it used to. Not sure when this was broken, but it is broken. As I said in the first message, playing mp3s etc. from within Chrome works just fine (I don't have to open another app to play them back), so I know this should work in Safari, too.

  • Playing .mp3 directly from internet (http) possibl...

    Dear all,
I created a correct M3U playlist, containing some MP3 files which are stored remotely (on a server). I put in URLs like:
    http://www.test.com/123.mp3
    http://www.test.com/456.mp3
Opening the playlist in Winamp works like a charm, all the files will play. However, opening the playlist on my N78 will result in a "Error, File damaged" message.
Is it possible at all to have the phone play MP3 stored remotely (using http, via the music player or RealPlayer, etc.?)
    N78 promised to be good!

I don't know how this would work exactly in Firefox as I don't use it but in Safari you can right click on the MP3 link in the webpage and choose "Download Linked File" Or "Download Linked File As". In Camino you right click and choose " Download Link Target". As Camino and Firefox are related this second option may be the one you would see. You can download the file and use the normal Add to Library process to put the file into iTunes.

  • Stream mp3s in safari

I was able to stream mp3s from safari and navigate away from the safari app with the mp3 still playing in the background. Now for some reason I am unable to do that. It stops playing when I hit the home button or if my phone locks. How do I fix this? Again, it was working earlier today.

  • [SOLVED] unable to play mp3 or flac files in mpd, .dts files play fine

I had a perfect running mpd setup before I tried to fiddle around with some dependancies to get xbmc-svn to compile without errors. I installed some AUR packages (ffmpeg-svn, x264-git, libva-sds, libvpx, libid3tag).
After that I started to experience trouble with mpd, it start fine and says it plays audio files just fine but whenever i play a mp3 or flac file the progress bar just looks like it's playing the file but I hear no sound. Whenever I play a .dts file i hear the sound correct.
I'm very curious to why this happends.
I rolled back the packages mentioned above but the issue remains unsolved.
My setup: pc is connected to receiver by hdmi cable using the latest alsa version with digital passthrough over hdmi, currently using mpd-git from AUR

Anyone any clues on how to solve this issue?

  • SWF to play mp3 files located on the server

    Hello,
Does anyone know if it is possible to create an SWF file that can play mp3 files directly from the server, without the need for a streaming media server or external JS.
And also for the application to read the current directory its located in and build a playlist based on the files inside.
any information of examples would be greatly appreciated.
    Peter.

As for loading and playing the files there is no issue.  Simply load them as you would load any file.  You can even use a relative path if they are in the same folder as the SWF, or a sub-folder that is in the folder with the SWF.
As for looking at the server directory for what files are there, and using them - I know of no way to do this.  That doesn't mean it is impossible, just that I haven't come across a method in my experience.
What I typically do is to archive the list of files in an XML file, and load the XML.  I know, that adds an extra step, and an extra file, but it is the easiest method for approximating what you want to do.
    Let me edit this response.
You could use javascript, or a server language to grab the list of files in the directory and pass it into Flash via the ExternalInterface classes.

  • ITunes takes a few seconds to start playing MP3 files

I just started using this new MacBook Pro and transfered my music library to the new laptop. I'm having a problem with iTunes playing MP3 files: when I double click on a MP3 track iTunes seems to freeze for like 3 - 4 seconds before the track starts playing and then it plays normally without a hitch. This is happening with each and every MP3 track that I have in the library as well as new MP3 tracks that I'm adding. Th short delay/freeze also occurs when I try to view or alter the info of an MP3 track in the library, so that when I right click on a track and click Get Info, the 'Get Info' screen will take about 3 - 4 seconds to show up and the same freeze happens when I click OK to close the 'Get Info' screen.
Note that this happens only with MP3 tracks. Tracks purchased from the iTunes store (AAC) do not have this problem and start playing without any delay/freeze.
Another weird tidbit: When MP3 tracks are in the same playlist (or album) and I let them play one after another (without me skipping to the next/previous song) then the delay/freeze does not occur at all. This delay seems to just happen when I start playing a song or when I click the fast forward/Rewind buttons to skip to the next/previous track.
Does anyone know what might be causing this? And if a fix is available somewhere? Thanks in advance!

It only happens on mp3s not on AAC's to me too! Just so you all know. I thought an EXTERNAL DRIVE was my problem but after hours of research I found it's probably an intentional bug (just kidding Apple you don't hate other companies that much....geesh! ) It might not be this...but you never know.
I thought maybe it was the TAG but it seems this has nothing to do with it. Point is either Apple left a bug on the last update of itunes MP3s because to them it's less of a priority or it's being messed up by Amazon folders (still looking in to), or maybe there was a problem with the install.
So far my options are to get an MP3 to AAC convertor and dump my 3000 songs into a program for converting, wait for an update, reinstall, or keep looking for a missed solution.
    Any help would be appreciated!!

  • Can no longer simultaneously stream an mp3 in Safari when using fast user switching option.

After updating to ios 5, I can no longer stream an mp3 in Safari when I use the fast user switching option.  For instance, if you are listening to streaming content in a Safari tab and want to reference another app as soon as you switch from the Safari stream pauses.
This was not the case with previous versions of ios.  Any ideas on a work around to restore this functionality to keep Safarr streaming content in the background?

User switching problems is the very first thing I noticed with SL. I have a host of other problems with SL but this is one of the most frustrating. The user switching did not work on 10.6 very well either but was wicked fast in 10.5.x
Apple rewrote the Kernel so this type of thing is expected, still the test crew missed this very noticable problem. Hopefully 10.6.2 has a fix.

Hi. I use Adobe Acrobat XI pro to make a PDF ebook embedded with audio. It works really well on my computer-I can read the book and hear the auto play mp3. The problem is, when I send it to my customers, they have difficulty hearing the audio. A few of them say they have Flash player on their PC and somehow they still can't hear, some say their Google Chrome browser tells them they've already got one flash player while they try to download one. For me, I had to download two versions of Flash player to be able to access to the audio. I don't know what the problem is, is it because it's the latest version of Adobe Acrobat XI pro that people with older version of Adobe reader or flash player can't open it properly? Or is it something else? How can I make sure every customer with different system can access to my books? Hope to hear from you ASAP! Thank you very much.

And how are the customers accessing the PDFs?
    What devices are they using?
What program or apps with versions are they using?
I this age of other then PDF eBooks formats and reader program and apss for computers and mobile devices for these formats I would look at creating the books in one or more of the eBook formats.
Google Chrome and FireFox both have their own version of a PDF reader plug-in and they are well known to be less capable than Adobe Reader. It is possible to configure these products to use Adobe Reader.

    This is normal.
To be able to play any audio source on your MacBook Pro, you might want to take a look at an application like Airfoil. More info below:
