Pm-hibernate stalls trice upon resume

Every stall is followed with a short beep, and lasts about 30-40 seconds during which the laptop is not doing anything. It is not reading from disk, it is no calculating anything. It is just waiting for something.
Here are the logs starting before hibernation and ending after resume:

This entire process makes the resume from hibernation take about 2 minutes, while it should be no longer than ~10 seconds.
Can you see anything in those logs that could be causing it?
Desclaimer:
Resume from hibernation with TuxOnIce does take ~10 seconds, but I cannot use it because with it my screen remains off even though system is well resumed.
So please do not recommend me alternative hibernation methods, because they all have one of those two results, and those that stall at least render the laptop usable after resume.

Lockheed wrote:Yeah, I was afraid it was unsolvable. But I still don't quite understand how is it that on the same hardware windows hibernation works so well, but linux doesn't.
Really?  Do you really think that windows' ability to handle hibernate has anything whatsoever to do with Linux's ability to hibernate? That is a horrible bit or reasoning...
@cfr, yes, I usually use suspend, but it still drains some battery and is not an option to use for emergency suspend when your battery reaches 3%.
Also, suspend is much easier to wake by accident. Happened several times when my ThinkPad was in a backpack. Nearly fried it.
So I fail to understand why you don't just set the "emergency suspend" to something higher than 3%?  Wouldn't that be a whole hell of a lot easier than trying to make old unnecessary and unmaintained software work (which is really just a collection of hacks/workarounds).
I highly doubt that you "nearly fried" your computer.  Computers have temperature sensors, and trip points at which they will shut off.  There is one in the kernel itself that will start a normal shutdown procedure and there is one in the firmware that will just hard shutdown the system at a slightly higher level.  Both of these temperatures are levels that are set by the manufacturer of the hardware which is designed to avoid damage.  I am a bit confused as to how you managed to have your laptop wake in your backpack anyway.  If the lid is closed, the keys shouldn't be pressed, and if the keys are being pressed, you are putting unsafe amounts of strain on a screen.  So if that is the case you should probably find a different method of carrying your laptop.  But besides all that, you can also just fine tune what methods the computer will accept to wake the machine.
Powering off works fast, because I have a fast SSD. But that's not the problem. The problem is I have to save all my work before shutting down, and then manually restore it next time I boot.
I think there are software solutions for this as well.  In fact some of the big DEs already do this.  But there is also one small project with the goal of being a stand alone implementation of this. But really, I think if you just did the reasonable thing of setting your "emergency suspend" to something more sane, you wouldn't really have this problem.

  • SP A60: Upon resume from standby, why devices don't work?

    Hi there,
A question about my Toshiba Satellite Pro A60 (P2.8GHz, 40GB, Win XP Pro, as factory-delivered and extended with Belkin 54G PC-card wireless network adapter).
When the laptop wakes up from standby, several devices don't work anymore, e.g. the wireless network-card. I haven't found anything to (un)check for Wakeup-On-Lan, resume, power management or anything similar.
After a full reboot, all works fine again.
What could I do to let all devices work the same after waking up from stand-by?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
    Regards,
    Herman Zandt

    Hi Horwath
Indeed not easy to explain. It doesn't make any difference if I use an AC power supply or battery, the same problem happens with both power sources.
I re-checked the whole issue: upon pressing the on-switch on the SP A60 whilst it is blinking yellow (ie. A60 is in standby mode), it reboots perfectly without any errors. All devices work, ie. connectivity wireless card with base station ("excellent"), USB-ports, modem is recognised, touchpad works, DVD/CD-RW reads and soundcard works. (In fact, subject of this email is not correct anymore...)
To be precise, what is NOT working is the data transfer, neither in my internal zone (LAN), nor outside (the Internet).
Summarised: upon resuming from standby, the SP-A60 operates as being purely local without recognising anything outside the machine, despite the wireless network card being properly installed and excellent connectivity with the base station shown.
As said, after full reboot all works fine again. No settings or checks have been found related to this. I'm running the latest BIOS.
Any ideas? A hardware- or software-related issue?
    Thanks a zillion,
    Herman

  • Upon resuming from sleep, the monitor goes black

the laptop is actually booting, but the screen flashes on for a sec then goes dark.  I can still see the screen and icon to log in, but the backlight is out, and I cannot log in actually.  if I close the lid and wait then open it again, it does it again.  I takes sometimes 5 times for it to finally stay lit and work again.  This also happens if I do a hard boot, sometimes taking up to 8 times with a hard boot.  I thought it might be related to the OS so I installed a partition and installed windows but it happens the same to windows.  It never goes out when I am working on it, only if I let it go to sleep or power it off and then try to resume or turn back on.  Any ideas?

Fix - *Dont give your iMac a static IP*
go to your Main or First routers settings and Give the iMac a SET IP so that it never changes. Then renew your DHCP lease and that set IP will come up and stay there. FOREVER!
I just resumed from sleep and it is not doing it anymore.

  • Premiere has been stalling regularly upon program start-up and closing

We have a strange problem - PP CS4 files will open... but after saving and exit - they will not open again!
May or may not be related but we also have on some files that yellow triangle on the lower right corner, saying "File importer detected an inconsistency in the file structure of [file name]" - does it have anything to do with it? how can it be solved and how can we fix the files? [All files are AVI type 2, filmed in Onlocation]
    thank tou for your help!

I don't know why you can't open saved files, but I get that error message myself occasionally.  I don't think it's related.

  • Hibernate resumes with scrambled picture

Upon resume from hibernation, everything works fine except the screen. It either stays black, or is filled with various amount of colourful stripes.
I am running Nvidia proprietary drivers (nouveau not an option due to poor power management) and TuxOnIce.
Does someone know how to fix that?

one other suggestion, as you have 4G RAM make sure /swap partition is at least 4G  to allow for hibernation.
    Hope that helps.
Thanks, but I have already tried those things long time ago. And my swap size is sufficient.

  • Resume from STR or Windows Hibernate

    Hi!
    I've got a K8N Neo Platinum / AMD Sempron 3100+ / ATI Radeon 9800 Pro system.
The machine's working absolutely great -- I've been very happy with the mobo, stability & speed's fine.
There's one problem which is annoying me and I've been unable to correct it. The computer won't wake up fully from a hibernation or STR.
As I understand things, setting the Sleep mode in the BIOS to STR(S3) means that when the machine's put to sleep, it powers down almost completely (fans, HD, LED's etc).
This is separate to using Windows 2000's Hibernate feature, which is independent of the underlying configuration. When resuming from Windows's hibernate, the mobo effectively thinks it's been cold-booted, and it's up to windows to perform the resumption (loads in memory and status data from the hibernation file and resumes).
Problem is, I can't get either an S3 sleep, or a Hibernation to actually properly resume! When resuming, they both seem to get almost the whole way there, but the display never reappears. During resumption, my optical mouse LED flashes a couple of times and the keyboard LED's flash too. Hard drives spin up, but the display never wakes.
Any thoughts? My hardware (peripherals and their drivers) are the same as those I used on my old ECS K7S5A motherboard, and hibernate/resume worked just fine.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,
I'm using the standard Catalyst 4.9 drivers with my 9800 Pro, but thanks for the info on the Omega drivers.
    A little update:
I've started from scratch again with a re-format.  Installed Win2K and installed my ZyDAS 1201-based USB 8021.11b WiFi stick.  I then downloaded and applied Win2k Service Pack 4, then installed the nForce drivers on the MSI-supplied CD.  Finally, installed the ATI catalyst drivers.
I could then use both STR and Hibernate!
Then, I installed MSI Live Update, and used it to download & install the most recent nForce drivers (5.03, I believe).  At this point, the nForce IDE drivers were also installed.  Once again, STR & Hibernate worked OK.
Then I downloaded the latest Realtek Audio drivers from the MSI website.  It was then that Hibernate started to go wrong.  So I tried uninstalling those drivers.  Windows showed the audio devices as being unrecognised in Device Manager, so I guess the uninstall was successful.  However, Suspend & Hibernate still didn't resume correctly.  Installing the Realtek drivers from the MSI CD (rather than those which were downloaded) also didn't help.
Has anyone else seen issues with the on-board Audio and suspend-to-RAM or Hibernation?  I think over the next few days I'll experiment with different orders of driver installation -- see if it's the Realtek drivers themselves, or some interaction between those and other drivers I've got installed.
In the traditional manner of Windows, I'm getting absolutely no info from the system on what's causing the problem.  It doesn't seem to be possible to activate any logging during suspend/resume, unlike regular boot-up logging.
    *sigh*  Isn't Windows a joy?

  • Dell iM101z won't suspend or hibernate after recent updates.

I've been running Arch on the following laptop since July 2012
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834200483
I had it successfully hibernating on lid close via systemd up until this past weekend.  After updates on 2/24, it would hibernate, but upon resume, the screen would go blank except for a single underscore character in the upper left and freeze there.  After running updates on 2/25, the same behavior happens when attempting to hibernate in the first place.  The same behavior occurs with suspending as well.
Many of the updates seemed to deal with mesa, could this be an Intel video driver issue?  Any help resolving the issue would be appreciated.

Update:  Still having this issue several updates later.  I've found that my laptop will eventually hibernate, but it spits out the following text after a 30 second or so hang and just before powering off:

  • Hibernate not functioning

Hi all, many months ago (>=6) i had suspend to ram and to disk working wonderfully using 'systemctl suspend|hibernate|hybrid-sleep' and the builtin support in the kernel. Now sometime after i got it working it becan to be unreliable (sometimes i would be able to resume from hibernate and other times not). Anyways now that you have the backstory: currently suspend to ram works but hibernate does not. To setup hibernate i did the following:
Added 'resume' to HOOKS in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
    Added 'resume=/dev/disk/by-uuid/the-uuid-of-my-swap-partition' to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub
Regenerated initramfs and vmlinuz using 'mkinitcpio -p linux' (as root)
    Regenerated grub.cfg using 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' (as root)
Now as far as i can tell i didn't miss anything. Using the above i can suspend to ram using 'systemctl suspend'. But hibernate on the other hand doesn't work (using 'systemctl hibernate'). Instead upon hibernating i see a message saying its being suspended and then the system shuts down. The only catch is upon powering up i cannot thaw from hibernate (the hibernate image supposedly written to swap isn't loaded). When i issue 'dmesg' i notice this:
[ 0.627850] PM: Checking hibernation image partition /dev/disk/by-uuid/4e487b3e-c436-4b05-bfaf-fde1f16f5203
[ 0.957263] PM: Hibernation image not present or could not be loaded.
I also have been using /sys/power/* directly to rule out an issue with systemd. Below are some of the things i've looked at:
Confirm kernel suspend to ram is working using the below code. The system is suspended to ram and upon bumping the mouse, keyboard, or power button it springs back to life, as expected.
    # echo mem > /sys/power/state
Confirm kernel hibernate is NOT working using the below code. This does as i describe above; thatis i am unable to load the hibernate image from swap and i recieve a message in dmesg as above.
    # echo disk > /sys/power/state
Alright..so somethings funky. I then went on to follow this guide in hopes of solving my problem. I am now in the testing section of the document (1a) and have found that the 'devices' test fails to complete which implies to me that some driver is the issue. Though i have the forcefully restart the system (using the reset button on my tower) when the test fails (which is making it difficult for me to locate a log?). For completeness below is the code that causes the failure:
    # echo devices > /sys/power/pm_test
    # echo platform > /sys/power/disk
    # echo disk > /sys/power/state
Another note about the above test is that i can replace the 'platform' in the second line to 'reboot' or 'shutdown' and it still fails all the same.
Now as i was saying since the 'devices' test fails this imples that a driver is the issue. I have read that GPU's and wireless cards are generally the first culprits. Here's a shortened version of lspci showing my gpu and wireless card info:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 630] (rev a1)
07:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
Sorry that this has been so long winded, and perhaps a little scrambled. Thanks for any help

  • Xfce: No lock screen and unclean filesystem due to hibernate

    Two issues.
I have Arch running with Xfce on a netbook and I've been having all sorts of trouble with Xfce Power Manager. At first, it seemed like it wouldn't obey my settings because my screen would blank after 10 minutes regardless, but then I found this workaround (reply #2) which seems to have taken care of that. My next problem is that when I resume from Suspend, there is no lock screen asking me for my password. I read around and saw that Xfce uses xscreensaver to lock the screen by default, but I don't have that installed, and I'd rather not if I don't have to. But this thread is four years old, so I was wondering if now there is a simpler solution to make Xfce Power Manager properly lock the screen.
Second, Hibernate doesn't seem to work at all. It shuts down my computer as expected, but when I power it back up I see the POST, GRUB, and Arch starts to boot again. When udev starts to check for uevents, I get a slew of errors; something like
    Filesystem is NOT Clean
Trans replayed: mountid42, transid 2214, desc 2505, len 10, commit 2516, next trans offset 2499 //There are about 20-40 of these each with different numbers, except for mountid.
    Replaying journal: Done.
Reiserfs journal '/dev/sda7' in blocks [18..8211]: 19 transactions replayed
The /dev/sda7 partition is where I put /var. I have my boot messages kept to tty1 but I can't scroll up far enough to capture all of the text. This doesn't happen when I boot normally. Suspend also works fine, other than not locking my screen and presenting me with a password dialogue upon resume.
Does anyone have any suggestions for either or both issues?

Regarding the lock screen, if you look at the script /usr/bin/xflock4, you can see that XFCE can use xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver, slock or xlock by default. Just install one of these and it should work fine.
I personally use slimlock and just symlinked /usr/local/bin/xflock4 to slimlock, which then takes precedence.
However, there is a bug in XFCE 4.8 that causes the screen not to be locked when you use the suspend button from the logout menu, which is supposed to be fixed with the 4.10 release. It works fine for me when I close my laptop lid though.
    see here:
    https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6019
Thanks, slimlock works really well; it looks quite nice, too. It feels like half the time I have a problem there's already a script for it somewhere and it's just a matter of finding it.
I'm still stumped on the hibernate issue, unfortunately.

  • X120E Touchpad inoperable after resuming from sleep

hello friends I'm a happy X120E user and a tech [pc's, mac's, lans, etc] - I do all sorts of tasks with my x120e and its been great.  I recently "upgraded" my SSD so a fresh new install of Windows 7 was in order.  After updating everything I have a problem I did not experience previously at all - not once in 3 years of use.
Upon resuming from sleep [and as far as I can remember this only occurs when resuming on battery], the touchpad/cursor is inoperable, frozen in the centered position, and I have found no way to 'wake' it.  I finally have to shutdown/restart to get things functioning again.  Keyboard works fine, but not touchpad or trackpoint [either/both].
maddeningly, its not consistent in this. sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.
I have seen the same issue with, and without, the supplied Lenovo Ultranav driver installed.
Question: in the X120E implementation, is the touchpad a PCI bus device or a USB device?  I see no power plan options [i.e. "Advanced" >"Allow this device to wake the computer"] available via Device properties. There are no pointer/mouse/touchpad options whatsoever under Power Plan Settings.
Will Fn+F8 enable/disable the touchpad on this notebook?  or,... should it?

No. Powering off and on again didn't work. My drive is a Seagate 750GB internal SATA drive in a Vantec NexStar-3 external enclosure. I don't think it is a driver issue. After the device removal error it won't mount on my PC or my Mac via FireWire or USB.
What I need to know is if there is some way to connect to the drive and make it mount with other software, using some kind of keystroke during startup, or maybe through terminal or something. I can't even try to repair the drive because it won't show up in disk utility.

  • [solved] pm-utils, how to run a script as logged-in user AFTER resume

All the scripts in /etc/pm/sleep.d are run as root. Is there any way for me to put a script such that it runs as my logged-in user AFTER all the scripts in /etc/pm/sleep.d. I tried putting su -c "command" - <username> but that doesn't have the full user environment, hence dbus session bus doesn't work yet.
EDIT: Solved: see solution by lucke below.

It might help to know what command you're having trouble with--perhaps there's a better/easier way to execute it.
The scripts in /etc/pm/sleep.d are called in numeric order during suspend.  That is, if you have a script titled 44-myfix-for-foo, it will run before a script titled 88-myfix-for-bar.  These scripts are then executed in reverse order upon resume.

  • Suspend + Resume crashes

I moved from Ubuntu to Arch today on my main computer in an effort to curb a problem I have been having:
On Ubuntu, every once in a while when I would suspend + resume, the computer would freeze upon resume. Now, with Arch it has yet to suspend and not crash on resume. This leads me to believe it is a hardware problem relating to the newer kernel (it didn't happen on Ubuntu 11.10 which had an older kernel).
    Here is my lspci:

    Here is my pm-suspend.log: http://pastebin.com/W1Hv0xm8
And the everything log from starting to suspend to right before I had to reboot (it got to the gnome desktop, but only displayed the clock and the desktop background, nothing else. Also, the keyboard was unresponsive (numlock didn't flash light, ctrl-alt-f1 didn't drop me to a tty): http://pastebin.com/WXjDPQW9
My processor is a Core i5-2500K and my Mobo is an ASRock Z68 Pro3-M.
I really like Arch compared to Ubuntu if only for the download speeds from the repositories (and overall faster boot/shutdown times) and I really would like to not have to switch back. Can anyone help?

It didn't resume after using startx either.
I assume its some problem with X? Whenever going into runlevel 5 it seems like a point of no return for making suspend work. Since it failed even when gdm wasn't started I guess that means the problem is at a lower level than gnome.
Another odd thing: I noticed very once in a while that when resuming it almost seems like my motherboard is hanging because none of the USB devices get power. This doesn't happen every time, but only once in a while. Also, the DVI output on the motherboard also sometimes doesn't give me output. I'm going to attempt once more to update my bios (I can't ever seem to get it to see the BIOS update file on my flash drive per these instructions.
EDIT: It successfully resumed after the BIOS upgrade! I went from v. 1.50 to 2.20 (there were many revisions between, but I hadn't kept myself up to date).

  • Don't reopen documents on resume

Is there some way to tell an application not to reopen documents upon resume?
I am finding this behavior intensely annoying when working with MS Office on the Mac.  If I open a spreadsheet, especially from email or from a finder icon, I really want to see that document.  I do not want the window for the document I opened to be buried by four or five other document windows for irrelevant documents that just happened to be open in my last session.
Is there some way to disable this behavior in an application-specific way?  For Preview, it's usually fine, for example.
    Thanks!

Discard the windows from previous session
For that to happen, you have to set the application  to discard the windows before quitting the application.
Hold the option key down and quit an application.
    Turn off Resume feature universally
System Preferences > General  > Number of recent items:
Uncheck the box next to "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"
    Best.

  • Hibernate hangs

I'm running x86_64 latest with slim/openbox & native systemd. Recently I find that sudo systemctl hibernate hangs. I see this in the journal

after a several minutes waiting with nothing happening I have to power off forcibly. I don't have any extra scripts set up for suspend.
Any ideas how to go about fixing this?

It seems that the hang is related to my PCTV 290e stick. If I boot without it then I can hibernate normally and the resume works fine.

is there anything obvious from the above as to why this device hangs hibernate/suspend. I do know that if I remove it then shutdown also hangs at the DM messages.

  • Hibernate file

    Hibernate to file
Excuse the coded title, intended to distinguish the meaning of "hibernate to file".
I understand the wiki on how to hibernate to a file; I want to generate hibernation files on demand.
I want to hibernate to file--as in tell hibernate to generate a file and output the file to the given file name.
    hibernate -o /path/to/hibernate-file
Then use scripts to shutdown and append the output of hibernate to the kernel config:
    resume=/some/partition resume_offset=[offset of hibernate-file]
    bonus:
hibernation dumps could serve as emulator-style "savestates". With a file system that preserved all changes, and the proper kernel parameters, hibernation dumps could be loaded with the file system in the state it was at the time just after the hibernation dump was written to disk. It would be possible to keep as many savestates of the system as available storage capacity allows.

I understand, but it iis important to point out the ambiguity of "hibernate to file" as obviously:
To hibernate you should use a swapfile and prepare the mkinitcpio.conf with that regard.
See here for details, perhaps follow the related links for further details.
    It is easily misunderstood.
I understand how to set up an installation to hibernate to disk and hibernate to file, the standard way as specified in the wiki.
That is not what I want to do; I want to be able to make the hibernation swap file on demand, probably with /sys/power/image_size=0 for the minimum size output, to another file of a given file name (not a predefined swap file).
It seems like this should be possible with tools available now, although with perhaps some patching.
This is how the wiki defines "hibernate to file":
    1. Boot, kernel has resume and resume_offset set, so attempt to load a hibernation payload if available in that swapfile; falling back to a standard boot procedure.
    2. kernel loads with standard boot procedure or hibernation payload
    3. If boot was successful, the computer should be ready to use
    4. At end of use, choose: Shudown/Hibernate/Logout/etc...
    5. If hibernate, dump the hibernate payload into the swapfile
This is how I want to "hibernate to file":
    1. Boot, kernel may or may not have resume and resume_offset set.
    2. If it does, attempt to load a hibernation payload if available in that swapfile; falling back to a standard boot procedure.
    3. kernel loads with standard boot procedure or hibernation payload
    4. If boot was successful, the computer should be ready to use
    5. At end of use, choose: Shudown/Hibernate/Logout/etc...
    6. If hibernate, dump the hibernate payload into a time-stamp filename hibernate-[date-time]; append resume and resume_offset to kernel config.
Maybe I can work out a demonstration with some bash...
Either way, still need resume hook in mkinitcpio.conf.
(aspirations of savestates are only theoretical)
