Pop up message: There was a problem connecting to the server. URLs with the type "file:" are not supported.

Any ideas?  Rather annoying, really.  After clicking OK, it immediately reappears.  After second 'OK' click it goes away.  I have yet to determine what is triggering it. It was there again when I opened laptop this am.  Heck, I don't even know what server it's referring to.

I had the same problem. We definitely traced it to Time Machine. The "Fix" was this: plugged in and designated different external HD as Backup volume. Then plugged in the original disc (after testing in in a different machine) and now the computer recognized it and error message stopped popping up. The Apple tech was as puzzled as I as to why this worked, but perhaps, forcing the machine to re-recognize it (or maybe even, gettting it recognized by a different machine first) somehow worked some magic. (Since posting this in another chat, several people have been successful. Good Luck!)

    I haven't suggested a solution yet. I want to know whether you still get the messages while Time Machine is disabled. Do you? If so, try any or all of the solutions proposed in this thread:

    not sure why it would keep trying to connect.
    First I'd look in Finder on the "Go" menu up top as "Connect to Server" and see if Rick-Pc was listed in there and remove it from the list.

    Hi sorry for the delay in this reply but have been working away, this pop up message happens only when both the imac and macbook pro is on, and if you try to connect using the correct user details it just keeps popping up, it does the same when you cancel / ignore it also.
    We have reverted to only using one mac at a time and this is to say the least very annoying, our iphones and ipad do not have the same issues. There are plenty of posts suggesting that the same thing happened with time Machine but we do not use this so the fixs do not work. If i knew how i would revert back to snow lepard .

    I click the OK button and it goes away. It usually happens twice, then nothing for a while.

    I've never had an account with MobilMe.  MobilMe is not listed as an account in iPhoto.  All software on iMac is up to date.  I'm running OSX 10.6.8.  While working in iPhoto, editing or trying to upload photos to FaceBook from iPhoto I get the error message: There was a problem connecting to MobileMe.  The request has timed out.
    For some reason iPhoto wants to communicate with MobilMe, even though I've never had an account.

    Strange, I got this error for the first time last night.  I have a 27" iMac (late 2010 model); with latest Aperture.  I recently added a Flickr account (have had a Facebook account on there for some time).  I was uploading some to my flickr account, and noticed that even though the "use actual size" setting was used, it was uploading tiny thumbnails and not the full version. 
    It was after this, that I got that error.  I haven't tried it again, as I'm now on my macbook at work.  Will try again tonight.
    I've also, NEVER had a .mac account, so no possibility of it being a legacy account.

    Thanks this has helped me solve the problem.
    I used the Outlook Anywhere connectivity tester you suggested. Selected Outlook autodiscover.
    It told me that it could not resolve things on any of the 4 tests.
    I saw that using the last test "Attempting to contact the Autodiscover service using the DNS SRV redirect method", was the only one likely to work in my case.
    I had already changed 3 entries in dns to point at my DDNS address but this had not worked, from the errors I could see that it was just the certificate name not matching so I changed the DNS entries for Autodiscover, autoconfig and _autodiscover._tcp
    to be webmail.domain.com which is a CNAME to my ddns address for the broadband router, which in turn forwards ports 80 and 443 to the exchange server for owa and activesync access. I got an error message saying that I had an illegal entry in my SRV record
    as a CNAME is not allowed, but it saved the change anyway.
    I reran the test and it worked.I can now make new outlook clients attach teo exchange.
    Thank you, after 8 hours yesterday of trying to reolve this I suddnely got it to work on one laptop but the other still would not and had lost track of what I could have changed so had no idea what actually made it work.

    I am having the same problem; have tried deleting some of the plist files as others suggested but to no avail.  Tried turning off time machine - that didn't fix it either.  Very dispappointing.
