Pop up text area in a JTable cell help required...

I want help in following concept.
One of the columns in a JTable should be pop up. If I can click that column in any row, the cell data should open a pop up and display the cell data fully. It is possible in JTable.
Please guide me on this...

Hi,
I have found the solution for this.
I added the following code snippet in my table and it worked.
table.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter() {
               public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) {
               if (e.getClickCount() == 1) {
                         JTable target = (JTable) e.getSource();
                         int row = target.getSelectedRow();
                         int column = target.getSelectedColumn();
               JTextArea ta = new JTextArea();
               int constant = 200;
               int constant1 = 300;
ta.setSize(constant, constant1);
               ta.setEditable(false);
               String text = (String) table.getModel().getValueAt(row, column);
               ta.setText(text);
               ta.setLineWrap(true);
               JScrollPane sp = new JScrollPane(ta);
               sp.setSize(constant, constant1);
               sp.setVerticalScrollBarPolicy(ScrollPaneConstants.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED);
               JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(table,sp);
          });

  • How to blink the text with in JTable Cell?

    Hi Friends,
    I am relatively new to Java Swings. I have got a requirement to blink the text with in the JTable cell conditionally. Please help with suggestions or sample codes if any.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Satya.

    I believe Swing components support HTML tags.
    So you might be able to wrap your text in <BLINK>I am blinking !</BLINK>
    tags.
    If that doesn't work, you probably have to create your own cell renderer, and force a component repaint every second or so... messy.

    Owen

  • Way to listen for change in JTable cell?

    I am having troubles trying to catch a key event while the user is entering text inside a given JTable cell (x/y location). The JTable only seems to manage String objects in it's cells so I can't place a JTextField in there with a KeyListener on it.
    Currently, I can only get control of the application once the user has left the cell they are editing.
    Does anyone have an example of a JTable 'cell KeyListener' scenario? At this point I want to see if I can print 'hello world' each time I type a character within a cell. Then I'll go from there....

    If you want to know when the contents of a cell have been updated you should use a TableModelListener.
    If you want to know when a character is added/removed from the cell editor then you need to first understand how this works with a simple text field.
    Typically you would use a DocumentListener to receive notifies of a change to the text field. However, within the DocumentEvent you wouldn't be able to change the text field as this notification comes after the text field has already been updated.
    If you need to ability to intercept changes to the text field before they happen, then you would need to use a DocumentFilter. An example of using a DocumentFilter is given in the Swing tutorial on [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/generaltext.html#filter]Text Component Features.
    Once you get your regular text field working the way you want, the next step to create a DefaultCellEditor using this JTextField and use this editor in your JTable. The above tutorial also has a section on using editors in a table.

  • Can a script manually insert a delete (or backspace) into a text area?

    I'm new to action script, so this may have a simple answer, sorry if that's the case.
    I have a little movie created with a simple purpose of trying to mimic a system like cell phones have for character input.
    There are two text areas, one hidden off the screen that accepts the input from the user; a second text area in on screen and displays what the user had entered after some basic processing on the input.
    The hidden text area is pretty basic with listener that is responsible for grabbing the input keys and then mangling them to be inserted into the displayed text area based on the cell phone text entry multi-tap rules. Example user press 2-2-2  and the hidden input accepts 222 and then appends 'C' to the display text area. That's working great, but I have a problem if the user wants to delete from the display text area. I can't find a way to insert a delete or backspace key into the display text area. I've tried using StringFromCharCode (8) // Key.BACKSPACE, but that doesn't work. That just displays one of those undefined glyphs. I figure that things like clear, and delete are handled somewhere higher in the input chain and that's where I'm having a problem.
    I've looked, but I can't find a way to delete a single character from the text area. I was thinking if I could find the cursor location that I could just use some delete character method to get the job done, but I couldn't find how to do that.
    Any ideas on how to pull off manual delete function in a text area?

    Ned, I do really want to manually (by method of code) trigger a delete in a text area. The delete (or backspace) that I want added to the text area isn't directly entered by the user, it's the result of several key presses by the user. That's why I called it "manual" because it's done by the code, not by the user's direct input.
    Think about how text entry works on most phones... if you want to enter a letter you have to cycle through all the letters on a single key until you get to the character desired. As I stated before, if you want a 'c' you need to press 2 button 3 times. This is basically what I'm trying to do, but I want to add the ability to delete a character too if the correct sequence in entered, for example a sequence of ### would equal a backspace.
    Rothrock, I think you were thinking the same thing that a single key is used to do a backspace.
    I was thinking that I could possibly insert key event into the event queue for the text area to process, but I wasn't sure about that.
    Sorry, if this is confusing, I know it's not a straight forward design. I need onscreen and offscreen text areas with the onscreen one acting as a slave of the offscreen one.
    The way the code currently works is hidden text area had a listner that responds to changes, and that handler processes the key entered and deletes that character from the hidden text area. After the full sequence of characters (say 2 button has been pressed 3 times) the handler then sends the resulting character into the display text area. This part of the code works great. I can add any character including some specials like tab and newline. However if I want the text area to delete a character I don't have a way to do that. That's why I tried to insert the backspace key (0x08 or ^H, for other oldschoolers), but using that as a char code or string from char code doesn't work.
    I had also tried to create to set the focus to the display text area then create and dispatch a backspace keydown and keyup events to the visible text area and then return the focus back to the hidden textarea, but... no luck.

  • Aligning the Text in Centre for MultiLine Cells in JTable

    Hi;
    Does anyone know how I could make a java table that has multiline text cells AND this multiline text is aligned to center? I tried to extend JTextArea and to implement TableRenderer - multiline was OK but it did not do anything on setHorizontalAlign. If I extend DefaultTableRender than I can align the text to center but I got no multiline...
    Any ideas?
    Kindly to provide me a solution for this its urgent.

    Hi;
    Thanks for the reply,on using Text Area as renderer i.e using Multi-Line cells in JTable, i achieved the objective of displaying the text on multiple lines in the cell."In my Table there are 5 columns and i'm setting renderer on 3rd and 5th column,If the text is too large in column 5 it automatically gets wrapped off for all the cells in column 5.For column 3 my text is not so large as compared to column 5 and due to which the Text in the column 3 starts from the top for all the cells i.e (the first row in column 3 is parallel to first row in column 5 ),Now the problem is i can't display the text in the center of all cells for Column 3 .
    Thanks in advance

  • Jtable cell listening to mouse event source

    Hi, I have a JTable with single cell selections enabled.

  • Can JTable cell acts as JList?

    I was planning to create an Event Calendar view in Monthly. Currently my jTable cell extends JTextArea. My problem is that, for example, today I got 2 events display in one cell, when a user double-click the "today" cell, an edit form will pop out, if there are 2 events in one cell, how I know which events to be edit? In this case I was thinking to use JList instaed of jTextArea. so i can choose which event to be edit. Is there any example showing how to implement jTable with jList cell? or is there any other method to overcome it?

    I haven't used a JList in a JTable so far, but for a JComboBox you find a working example in the tutorial. That may give you some ideas.
    What I did use is a (read only) JTable in a JTable. So if you don't achieve your goal with JList there are alternatives.
    But wait for our table specialists to come along.

  • Start or stop edit jtable cell editing

    Hello,
    I got a problem with the jtable DefaultModel isCellEditable.
    If I set the IsCellEditable to false, I would not be able to enable the cell selection as and when I want it.
    What I have in mind is the add a mouselister so that if the user select a row using fast left mouse click like the procedure shown below
    private class MouseClickHandler extends MouseAdapter {
    public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent event) {
    int no_mouseclick = 0;
    no_mouseclick = event.getClickCount();
    if (no_mouseclick >= 2) {
    int cur_row = 0;
    cur_row = table.getSelectedRow();
    // table.setColumnSelectionAllowed(true);
    // table.setRowSelectionAllowed(true);
    for (int i=0;i<table.getColumnCount();i++){
    table.editCellAt(cur_row,i);
    System.out.println("mouse row--->" + cur_row);
    I could overwrite the IsCellEditable to true to enable that particular or cell contains in that row to be able to accept input and overwrite any data which in my case obtained from the Sql database a sort of like input module using tabulation . I am also thinking of using text component or combobox to display the value for user selection , but I do not know how to enable a particular cell for editing if the Jtable created is using a non-editable DefaultModel. If I set the IsCellEditable to true, every single cell would be enable for editing , and this defeat the purpose of enable user input only upon double mouseclicks.
    By the way , I am interested to know how to track the data changes in the cell within the jtable so that only those have been modified are notify from the Table model and updated into the Sql table
    Could anyone of you out there provide some hints please
    Thanks

    Hello,
    Tablemodellistener could detect the changes in the data, how about the backend database updating and transactional activity that must be associated with the data changes?
    What is on my mind is that , the moment there is changes in the data detected by the TableModellistener, whatever records associated with or brougt up by Jtable would be all deleted from the database and then follow by the new set of new records to be inserted into the database. The disadvantage of this method is that everytime the backend database connection and activity need to be executed the moment there is a change in the data in the jtable cell. For example the user may be just amendment to only one cell , but all the records associated need to be deleted and then inserted again.
    Perhaps there are better solution to deal with Jtable and JDBC backend connection where in this case, I am using JDO to undertake the database activity like the observable modelling .

  • AutoComplete JComboBox As JTable cell editor

    Hello, when I try to use AutoComplete JComboBox as my JTable cell editor, I facing the following problem
    1) Exception thrown when show pop up. - Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.awt.IllegalComponentStateException: component must be showing on the screen to determine its location
    2) Unable to capture enter key event.
    Here is my complete working code. With the same JComboBox class, I face no problem in adding it at JFrame. But when using it as JTable cell editor, I will have the mentioned problem.
    Any advice? Thanks

    You need to create a custom CellEditor which will prevent these problems from occurring. The explanation behind the problem and source code for the new editor can be found at Thomas Bierhance's site http://www.orbital-computer.de/JComboBox/. The description of the problem and the workaround are at the bottom of the page.

    Hi,
    Take a look at the following blog posts and see if they can help you get what you are looking for (there are sample applications in them showing the functionality):

  • Can not show the JCheckBox in JTable cell

    I want to place a JCheckBox in one JTable cell, i do as below:
    i want the column "d" be a check box which indicates "true" or "false".
    String[] columnNames = {"a","b","c","d"};
    Object[][] rowData = {{"", "", "", Boolean.FALSE}};
    tableModel = new DefaultTableModel(rowData, columnNames);
    dataTable = new JTable(tableModel);
    dataTable.getColumnModel().getColumn(3).setCellEditor(new DefaultCellEditor(new JCheckBox()));
    But when i run it, the "d" column show the string "false" or "true", not the check box i wanted.
    I do not understand it, can you help me?
    Thank you very much!

    Do not use DefaultTableModel, create your own table model and you should implement the method
    getColumnClass to display the boolean as checkbox ...
    I hope the following colde snippet helps you :
    class MyModel extends AbstractTableModel {
              private String[] columnNames = {"c1",
    "c2"};
    public Object[][] data ={{Boolean.valueOf(true),"c1d1"}};
         public int getColumnCount() {
         //System.out.println("Calling getColumnCount");
         return columnNames.length;
    public int getRowCount() {
    //System.out.println("Calling row count");
    return data.length;
    public String getColumnName(int col) {
    return columnNames[col];
    public Object getValueAt(int row, int col) {
    return data[row][col];
    * JTable uses this method to determine the default renderer/
    * editor for each cell. If we didn't implement this method,
    * then the last column would contain text ("true"/"false"),
    * rather than a check box.
    public Class getColumnClass(int c) {
    return getValueAt(0, c).getClass();
    * Don't need to implement this method unless your table's
    * editable.
    public boolean isCellEditable(int row, int col) {
    //Note that the data/cell address is constant,
    //no matter where the cell appears onscreen.
    return true;
    * Don't need to implement this method unless your table's
    * data can change.
    public void setValueAt(Object value, int row, int col) {
    data[row][col] = value;
    fireTableCellUpdated(row, col);

  • Pop Up Text in an applet on mouse over event

    Can anyone help me to design a pop up text message to be displayed in an applet on moving your mouse over a particular control. Plz. Its urgent

    To show a pop-up use javax.swing.Popup. Add a mouse listener to button. When mouse enters the button pop-up shows and when mouse exited the button, pop-up disappears. This pop-up is capable of displaying simple message to any swing component. Sample code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    * @author mrityunjoy_saha
    * @version 1.0
    public class AppletWithPopup extends JApplet {
        private Popup popup;
        private JButton button;
        private JLabel message;
        @Override
        public void init() {
            setLayout(new FlowLayout());
            button = new JButton("Hello");
            message = new JLabel("This is a JLabel. It can be any swing component.");
            button.addMouseListener(new MyMouseListener());
            add(button);
        private class MyMouseListener extends MouseAdapter {
            @Override
            public void mouseEntered(MouseEvent e) {
                System.out.println("Mouse entered.");
                PopupFactory factory = PopupFactory.getSharedInstance();
                popup = factory.getPopup(AppletWithPopup.this, message, (int) button.getLocationOnScreen().
                        getX() - 20, (int) button.getLocationOnScreen().getY() + 40);
                //popup = factory.getPopup(AppletWithPopup.this, message, 50, 10);
                popup.show();
            @Override
            public void mouseExited(MouseEvent e) {
                System.out.println("Mouse exited.");
                if (popup != null) {
                    popup.hide();
    }If you are talking about alert box (where some message can be displayed), in above example instead of javax.swing.Popup use javax.swing.JOptionPane. In case you are using JOptionPane, make it visible in mouseEntered() method and hide it in mouseExited() method.
    Thanks,
