Popup menu appears behind canvas component

Has anybody encountered this problem?
I attach the popup menu to the canvas component, like this:
public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e)
     if (e.getSource() == psuCanvas && e.getButton() == MouseEvent.BUTTON3)
          pmenu.show((Component)psuCanvas, e.getX(), e.getY());
          contextText.setText("Right Click!!!");
The popup menu is only visible when I click the edge of the Canvas component, that is how I know that the popup is actually showing but behind the Canvas component!!!
Please help

You mean your 1 step of calling "JPopupMenu.setDefaultLightWeightPopupEnabled(false);"?
That method is meant specifically for using popup menus when you are mixing AWT and Swing components. The reason is because of the problem you first posted about. It's a way to get around that problem. But really, it's more of a hack that is used when dealing with old AWT-based components which you can't (or won't), for whatever reason, "update" to Swing versions. (Say from a 3rd-party library).
It is not recommended to mix AWT and Swing components, as already mentioned. The provided link above is an article that explains the issues with this. The fact that you can doesn't mean you should.
If you are writing this Canvas subclass yourself, and it's going to be typically used in a Swing application, you will have problems later, most likely. For example, why don't you try puting your Canvas class in a JScrollPane so you can make it bigger then the window and scrollable? You'll have scrollbar visibility issues. Fine, you can use java.awt.ScrollPane, I guess. Then I can think of several things one might do with JLayeredPanes which would create problems as well. And there is no simple "setDefaultLightWeightEnabled()" option to fix those.
So eventually, as your app, or library, matures, you start running into these problems cuz you are using AWT components where you should be using Swing components, and you start making more hack-like fixes for all these problems like using setDefaultLightWeightPopupEnabled() and explicit sizing instead of layout managers and limiting yourself to what you can do with your components.
That's why.

  • Fireworks Menu Appearing Behind Content

    Hi All
    I have an existing website built in Macromedia Studio 8. I would like to upgrade to Web Premium CS5.5. As a result, I am currently using a trial version which has helped me to redesign the whole website. I am not proficient in code writing and have a basis understanding of the software. (That is why I am testing the trial version first). However, I an faced with TWO problems.
    The first is, although my templates were built using one of Adobe's page layout formats (then customised), some of the pages are no longer centred.
    The second is, I have created menu's in both Fireworks (Studio 8 then edited in Fireworks CS5.1 creative suite master collection and saved) and Spry (in Dreamweaver CS5.5) - which have now caused the menus to appear behind content on some of the pages.
    I have tried to use the pages which look fine in the browser as templates but, sadly, when the content is changed/added to, the menu appears behind again.
    I would appreciate any help.
    S
    P.S.I can't publish a link as I am using a trial version of the software at present.

    Thank you for your prompt reply Snake eyes,

    1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the div. The elements within this div have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.

  • Help!  A "Connect to" popup menu appears when trying to play a video...

    Thanks.
    A "Connect to" popup menu appears that asks for my username
    and password when trying to play video.
    I believe this menu began appearing after installing IE 7.0.
    Is it therefore a IE 7 issue, or IIS authentication setting, or do
    I need to reinstall flash or shockwave? Another question, and very
    basic... how do I know if i am using flash or shockwave?
    I have googled this and cannot find a similiar case.
    Ideas? Thanks.

    Well, the answer is going to depend on your network setup. If
    you're a home user on a single machine then I'd check your firewall
    settings. Or contact your ISP to see if they've implemented any
    kind of proxy that requires authentication.
    If you're in a network environment then hit your IT guys to
    see if they're blocking the FLV file format, or blocking RTMP
    streams, or requiring proxy authentication or something like
    that.

  • How to place popup menu on clicking a Component

    Hi everybody.
    I have a swing application where I have JFrame and so many components in that. I want to open Popup menu on clicking a button. The menu should have three menu items into that. It looks very simple but I am not sure how should I do that.
    If possible, try to explain it with small piece of code.
    Thanks in advance.

    yourJbutton.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter() { //Listen for mouse events
      public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e) {
        if (SwingUtilities.isRightMouseButton(e) == true && e.isMetaDown() == true) {
          JPopupMenu popup = new JPopupMenu();
          JMenuItem mItem = new JMenuItem("Something");
          mItem.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
              // do your thing
          popup.add(mItem);
          popup.addSeparator();
          mItem = new JMenuItem("Close Popup");
          mItem.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {}});
          popup.add(mItem);
          popup.show(e.getComponent(), e.getX(), e.getY());
    });

  • "Java Applet Window" appears in my popup menu

    Hello
    I have added a popup menu to my applet but whenever the popup menu appears, I also get the text "Java Applet Window" at its bottom.
    What is causing this?
    Can I get rid of it?

    Yes you can add a local user policy or local system policy that grants an AWT permission that regards "Java Applet Window" more precisely permission java.awt.AWTPermission "showWindowWithoutWarningBanner";
    You can use a tool to add policy, create new policy files etc. Read about "policytool" in http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/tooldocs/tools.html
    Probably, signing tha applet jar, you can obtain necessary permission without modifing local policy. But I'm not sure.
    Stefano.

  • Popup menue problem

    when adding popup menues on text pane component then try to appeare it ,the textpane component appeare in front of the popup menue
    i want fix this problem!!!!!

    Read the Swing tutorial on [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/menu.html#popup]How to Use Menus for a working example of using popup menus.
    If you need further help then you need to create a [url http://homepage1.nifty.com/algafield/sscce.html]Short, Self Contained, Compilable and Executable, Example Program (SSCCE) that demonstrates the incorrect behaviour, because I can't guess exactly what you are doing based on the information provided.
    And don't forget to use the [url http://forum.java.sun.com/help.jspa?sec=formatting]Code Formatting Tags so the code retains its original formatting.

  • RH9 FlashHelp Related Topic popup menu behavior

    Hi. Recently upgraded to RH9 from RH7. Output is FlashHelp. Use IE7.
    Discovered that when clicking on Related Topics button, page scrolls up and popup menu appears at the top of the topic, rather than appearing next to the button as it used to. Is there any way to resolve this buggy behavior? Attempted to recreate the button, used the topics found dialog option, etc. Get the same result regardless of changes to Related Topics options.
    This issue occurs when I generate the output and test locally, as well as when it's published to our server.
    Appreciate any suggestions.

    Try Tools > Update DHMTL...
    It's a wild guess and beyond that, I have no other ideas. Sorry.

  • Mouse right click button, popup menu, PC frozen

    Hello all,
    It has been while I've been noticing this problem.
    Almost every time I click with the right mouse button on an email from the list of emails or a word inside the content of an email to see which words are suggested by the spell checker, the usual popup menu appear but immediately after
    my PC gets frozen. I need to restart it.
    I don't think TB causes that crash, but something indirectly related.
    How can I debug this? (I'm software developer)
    Thank you so much.
    Roberto

    Update1:
    I put my attention only in the main TB menu.
    I disabled the TB extensions (only Lighting and EnigMail) and tried again to play with the main TB menu.
    With this new TB GUI, you don't see directly the main menu. I usually click the ALT key and the main menu will be displayed. After that I play with it a bit. That means, I clicked on on Tools or File or View etc items and just moved the mouse cursor over the popup menu, without clicking on a specific submenu item. After a while, some seconds, the PC gets frozen and I need to restard the PC.
    I started TB in safe mode also (-safe-mode). In this mode the main menu appears always so I don't need to click on the ALT key.
    I repeat the same steps of moving the mouse cursor of popup main menu items. Up to now, all is normal, without crashing or freezing.
    PC: Win7 (full updated), x64, TB last version.
    Any idea how can I debug this problem?
    Thanks

  • Popup Menu on JPanel

    Howdy,
    I have a JPanel with various controls on it, like JButton JLabel etc. I'd like to have a popup menu appear from the JPanel regardless of whether the user rightclicks over a JButton or over the JPanel itself. One way this can be done is to trap the rightclick on each control and then pass it on to the JPanel. Is there a simpler solution to this?
    Thanks

    you might be able to override the processMouseEvent method on the JPanel and handle it there. I think that method delegates to the components inward. Not sure.

    It seems that when a popup menu is activated the component invoker lost focus. this is ugly because a focus lost can trigger unexpected events (formatting, validating, etc). how can I avoid this?
    thanx

    I must seem a bit weird being the only one to reply to my posts, but I found what is occuring, is that when I do the mouse click the InputVerifier for that JTextField is firing. This is causing a problem, because this input verifier pops up a dialog saying please enter correct values ... and then highlights the entire text field. Problem is if the input is currently invalid I can't use the mouse.
    Any ideas?

  • Challenge popup menu,  css stylesheet and button in table component

    Hello, in my last post i put the code of an example of popup menu but the only thing that need to run was a cdata tag. But in the example i only can open and close the popup menu in the top and left location that previously set in the css stylesheet .
    1.- I need to create a popup menu that can be diplayed if i click on a button in a table component of creator
    2.- The menu must waits and let me select the opcion I choose with a click otherrewise
    3.- The menu must dissapear if i move the cursor mouse away of the menu,
    I really need somebody helps me faster as u can, and i apreciate ur help, tnks!

    The best thing to do would be to find an existing popup menu widget in a JavaScript library, like dojo (dojotoolkit.org). If you can't find an existing JavaScript widget that fulfills your needs, you can write your own. It won't be easy, but you can use Creator's Auto Complete Text Field's JavaScript as a model. If that is the case, look at both the JavaScript at http://sunapp2.whardy.com/AjaxSamples2/faces/static/META-INF/autocomplete/script.js and the HTML source of the page located at http://sunapp2.whardy.com/AjaxSamples2/faces/DemoAutoCompleteTextField.jsp which is a page that is part of the Creator AJAX component catalog (http://developers.sun.com/ajax/componentscatalog.jsp).

  • The Taskbar context menu to appear behind the Taskbar

    This bug was first found in Windows 8 but after some time we noticed that its also present in Windows 7. This bug causes the Taskbar context menu to appear behind the Taskbar.

    That's the for the secondary track.  But how do I trim the primary audio song from itunes.  I did find a work around.
    select  the song in itunes.
    command + I to get the information screen.
    Under one of the tabs there is a "start" and "end" timer.  Trial and error will put allow you to start and stop at the time specifed.
    I renamed it " trimmed" so I knew it was a timmed version...then I inserted it into aperture the normal way...
    A pain, but it works...

  • Strange white rectangles appear behind "menu commands"

    When I hover over the menu commands in Photoshop or Illustrator (both CS2), white rectangles appear behind the Menu Commands and so cluttering the otherwise nice GUI. As I experienced this before on another computer but still have no clue what is going wrong could someone give me a clue what's going on here? I am using Windows XP Service Pack 2.
    kind regards,

    can you show a screen shot? try http://www.pixentral.com upload the screen shot and copy the url in your address bar to a post here.
    from your description it SOUNDS like it might be a display driver issue, but it's hard to tell. a screen shot might help someone nail it.
    might as well try updating your video driver to see if there's anything newer out there than what you're currently running.

  • ListView appearing behind other graphical components in VBox

    I have created a ListView implementation of a ChoiceBox since I have a very long list of items and I don't like the fact that the entire list is displayed when opening the ChoiceBox. I have attached this ListView to a button so that when a user clicks on the button the ListView opens just like a ChoiceBox. My issue, however, is that when the ListView is diplayed it appears behind the other graphical components in my VBox container! I have tried to call "toFront()" on my ListView component however the VBox repositions my ListView component to the bottom of the VBox (which makes sense since toFront merely moves the node to the end of the VBox node list). Obviously this is not the behaviour I want and I don't want to have to convert my VBox to a StackPane (or just a Pane) and layout the components myself since the VBox lays out the components perfectly. It would be nice if there were a "z order" parameter but that doesn't appear to be the case and I have already looked into the "depth" parameter.
    Are there any other ways to bring my ListView to the front without the VBox repositioning this component? How does the ChoiceBox component itself accomplish this? I have also tried to embed the ListView in a PopupControl but the unfortunate side effect of this is that the Popup always appears in front of EVERY window on my screen which is a tad annoying.
    BTW, I think JavaFX is the next best thing to sliced bread! I have written a very large application and this is the only issue that I have run into since it went GA. JavaFX has far exceeded my expectations and the JavaFX team (and Oracle in general) and other developers who have contributed to this project should all be commended for the outstanding work they have done on this!!!

The reason why is that if you use "lightweight" rendering of the drop down (er... popup?) and it extends beyond the end of the window, you will have your list appear clipped. So you have to use a real heavyweight window (the PopupControl) to make sure that if it extends beyond the edge of the window, it displays correctly.
    I believe the UI controls team is planning on adding a proper ComboBox (which, FWIW, we always planned to add) sometime between now and 3.0, but I'm not sure when. The ChoiceBox actually uses a ContextMenu, while ComboBox would use PopupControl, but some of the little details are the same. Here is a code snippet that might be useful from the ChoiceBox skin.
            // When popup is hidden by autohide - the ChoiceBox Showing property needs
            // to be updated. So we listen to when autohide happens. Calling hide()
            // there after causes Showing to be set to false
            popup.setOnAutoHide(new EventHandler<Event>() {
                @Override public void handle(Event event) {
                    ((ChoiceBox)getSkinnable()).hide();
            // fix RT-14469 : When tab shifts ChoiceBox focus to another control,
            // its popup should hide.
            getSkinnable().focusedProperty().addListener(new ChangeListener<Boolean>() {
                @Override public void changed(ObservableValue<? extends Boolean> observable, Boolean oldValue, Boolean newValue) {
                    if (!newValue) {
                        ((ChoiceBox)getSkinnable()).hide();
            // TODO remove this id once bug RT-7542 is fixed.
            popup.setId("choice-box-popup-menu");

  • JMenu is behind Canvas. problem ?

    I have created a JFrame with a JMenuBar,
    I have added a ImageCanvas (sub class of Canvas) in the center of the JFrame
    but whenever i click on Menu it appears behind the canvas
    what to do pls help?

    Hey,
    Canvas is an awt component meaning it is a heavyweight
    component. The swing components are lightweight.
    Thats the problem.
    Have a look at the following URL.
    http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/mixing/
    It should explain about mixing heavyweight/lightweight
    components
    Basically you either need to use Frame, Menu and
    canvas or JFrame, JMenu and JPanel.
    nesAnd heres the important part:
    "When a lightweight component overlaps a heavyweight component, the heavyweight component is always on top,
    regardless of the relative z-order of the two components."
    Use JPanel instead of canvas if your using swing.
    regards,
    Tim
