Portfolio website feedback

Hi all,
i was hoping to get some feedback on my website i created last year. i'm a graphic designer of 15 years and have never committed myself to web building. i've designed websites but never actually built them. dreamweaver only left me scratching my head every time i've been patient enough to give it a crack, so when another designer suggested iweb i thought i'd finally give it ago.
i started my own company last year so the purpose of this website is to showcase my portfolio. any feedback would be well received.

Overall, I like it. It is refreshing to see other people working outside of templates.

  • How to use downloaded gallery in your portfolio website?

i'm fairly new to flash and decided to build my own portfolio website. using flash cs4
the overall website is looking and functioning fine but i want to add an image gallery.
I downloaded one which included .fla .as xml and swf files but i dont know what to do with them in the sense of adding them to a particular page in my flash site.........
if anyone knows what to do , help would be great!!

First make sure what you downloaded works per your expectations.  Then look into using the Loader class to dynamically add the gallery swf to your existing Flash file.  You can probably find a tutorial on Google using terms like "AS3 Loader tutorial".
The basic scenario involves using the Loader class to add the swf dynamically and then positioning it as desired.  You might have an empty movieclip on teh stage ready to be a home for it, or you might just want to add it to a timeline.  There is no guarantee the gallery is designed to be readily addable this way though, so you may need to end up tweaking that file via the fla/as files you acquired.

  • I have added photos to a portfolio website I'm building and a lot of them look VERY grainy when you click on them. They are nice clean large files and can print bat high res way over 16" x 20" so whats happened to them in iWeb?

I have added photos to a portfolio website I'm building and a lot of them look VERY grainy when you click on them. They are nice clean large files and can print bat high res way over 16" x 20" so whats happened to them in iWeb?

When you are dealing with websites, image file size is a trade off between quality and download speed. There's not a lot of point to having high quality images if they take too long to download in the browser.
Nowadays we also have to consider the device that the end user is viewing the images on. An image that is optimized for viewing on a large screen is total overkill and unsuitable for those using mobile devices.
Really we should be supplying different versions of media files for different devices using @media rules in the stylesheet but this is rather outside of the scope of iWeb. If you use the built in image optimizer and the iWeb Photo template with slideshow, the application will optimize the images according to the way in which you set this function in preferences and the slideshow size will be automatically reduced for those viewing it on smaller screens.
If you want to give your viewers the opportunity to view large, high quality images, you can supply them as a download.

  • How to include edge html to portfolio website

    hello guys
How do i include edge html to my portfolio website?
    Best regards
    Casper

    Hi,
Copt the files over to your website directory and then copy everything in the head tag into the page you want to include the edge project in and then copy the contents of the body tag into where you want to put the edge animation.
    I hope this helps.

  • (OT) What would you call this section of a Graphic Portfolio website?

On my graphic design portfolio website, there will be a Portfolio section where you'll see finished items like posters and flyers.
But I'll also add a section containing various airbrushing/photoshopping jobs. This section will hold before/after images... like 1) A picture of a person, 2) A picture of a cave, and 3) The photoshopped picture of the person inside the cave, with arrows to indicate that the first two pictures were merged. The section will also contain traditional airbrushing (before/after model shots).
I am reluctant to call it just "Airbrushing" because there's a lot more intricate work than that. Taking a person or object out of one environment and placing them in another is referred to as "Photoshopping" nowadays... but I'd like to use an expression that isn't specific to this program, if at all possible. What would be a more appropriate name for such a section?
I thought of "Photo Editing". Would that work? Or does that make you think of something else entirely?

Well, I was being serious.  You didn't list the size limitation initially.
How about "Work Samples", "See My Work", "Some of My Work".

  • Navigation for an online portfolio website

    Hello,
I am creating a webpage to be my online portfolio for my
graphic design work. I used a template, which originally uses a
flash slideshow to navigate through the portfolio pieces. I would
like to have it html instead, and give the user the ability to
    navigate at their own pace.
Everything on the page stays the same always, except for the
box that is the actual portfolio. What I did is create the index
page, and then I just exchanged the portfolio image for every new
page. However, this only looks good after the first run through of
the website and all the images get stored in the cache. For first
time visit, you can obvioulsy see the loading process, and it
creates sort of a flickering with the background image of the
    website.
Here is the website so far, so that you can see exactly what
    I mean: www.jelenaboskovic.com
I already created the website, so to recreate it in frames is
not my first choice. And I heard that frames are not always
recommended. I am a novice webdesigner, so any help would be really
appreciated. I mainly would like to know if there is any other ways
to navigate through my portfolio, without the use of frames, and
without the flickering that it has currently the way that I
    designed it.
Thanks a lot for any help in advance.

I also found a webpage that does exactly what I want:
    http://www.pepfx.com/web_design/website-design1.php#website1
Is this using a javascript? or what?
    PLEASE HELP. Thanks.

  • Architecture Portfolio Website Workflow Advice (newbie)

    hi all.
i am looking at adobe products and already have creative suite for a (primarily) poster creation workflow which i am very happy with. i need to redo an existing "iFrames" based website after having created a nice blog using the WordPress Blog Themes.
I am hoping someone can help me with advice on adobe specific software i might use of other advice, suggestions etc.
    background:
i have been really happy with my ability to organize a very large amount of images in an Aperture database on the mac and to publish them easily to Flickr (among other things). this has now freed me up to focus on creating a new website for an old website that needs updating. right now i have just created a /link/ for the pictures on the webpages which takes the viewer to the flickr albums.
i am looking at "themes" such as the WordPress Photography theme (http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/photography/) and i am also looking at sites that are using the "autoviewer" or "autoviewer pro" software.
    http://www.iloveconcrete.net/drive1/drive1.html
    http://www.simpleviewer.net/autoviewer/
anyway, i am familiar with using wordpress UI but i am desperately trying to find a method where i don't have to use the wordpress image uploader. i guess the holy grail would be to just "publish" album "code" out of Aperture that i would then embed into a WP theme website which i am sure i could create in a week or something.
anyway, does anyone know of anywhere i can ask such questions or get some leads on keeping this workflow simple but create a nice website at the same time?
TIA and apologies for the off-topic post.
    jon

    hi nancy, dweb3d.
this is really great help and i very much appreciate it.
can i please ask you some follow ups here as i try and get this together?
for instance my thought at the moment is to use the sidewinder theme [http://graphpaperpress.com/themes/sidewinder/] which i am sort of guessing uses a "parallel" or "plugin" (not sure how you would terms this but) it is called Photoshelter [http://www.photoshelter.com/about/wordpress].
am i correct in thinking that it is THIS plugin that makes the functionality of sidewinder complete?
also, would something as straighforward as a WP plugin (such as NGG gallery) allow me to basically export my Aperture Album images to the desktop and then upload them to FTP to get them into the WP Blog? or are the answers here indicating that i would need a customized set of coding instructions embedded in the blog to get this to happen?
i mean, i guess in an ideal world at some time in the future there could be e link between my aperture Albums and the images displayed in my WP portfolio blog but for the meantime can anyone help me with understanding what it might take to do a reasonably fluid facsimile of this workflow...?
i guess i am not understanding how all the parts discussed here either relate or don't relate...
    THANKS

  • Is there a general Verizon website feedback page ???

Where to post general feedback on use of Verizon website (general website, not just forums) ?
    Thank you for your help.
    Thanks again for your help.
    akm (XPpro, SP-2, IE-7, Office2003)

There's nothing built into DW (or an extension of DW that I've ever seen) that can do that.
You would be looking at hand coding javascript to get that kind of set up. Search Google for "astrology javascript", there should be something out there already built that you can copy/paste into DW.
To get the exact functionality you're looking for may require hiring a professional to create it for you though.

  • Website Feedback, Tips, and Metatags

I am a sculptor/performace artist and have a website up through iWeb. I am looking for feedback on ease of navigation, seeing that about 50% of my traffic leaves in 30s or less. I am also looking for any tips on metatags and how to generate more traffic and to make the user experience as nice as possible. Any feedback would be great. Link is

Mac Mini 1.42ghz, 1 gig ram, 4 external hds   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I do not use a .mac account but rather dot5hosting. I publish everything to a folder, then use fetch to ftp it to my site. I actually did not use one of the built in templates, but started with a blank slate. The contact page was done through http://www.freedback.com/ All you do is insert a text box with the word FORMCODE, generate a form through the feedback site, and subsititute the generated html for the word FORMCODE in that particular page (after it is published). The only thing I don't like about it is that a visitor will have to click the word continure after sending a message in order to get back to the site. Did you notice the flash galleries?

  • Copyright fair use - using video excerpt on portfolio website

Not necessarily FCP-related, but thought some of the videos pros out there might be able to help: Have created a video for a client, full copyright transferred to client, as always. No specific copyright agreement signed. I added a 20-second excerpt of the clip (total length 4 minutes) on my company's website as part of our design portfolio.
Now the client has asked me to remove the clip as it infringes copyrights. Don't I have the right to showcase my work as part of the 'fair use' copyright policy?
Thanks for any hints (or links)!

It should have been a part of your initial agreement, something to the effect of "we shall retain a number of copies for promotional use, which may include demo reels and website use." And then haggle from there.
I have a couple of clients with whom I sign NDA's-- with one of them I cannot even admit that they are a client. What looks to you like a real snazzy piece of video for your reel may be, to them, a proprietary piece of information.

  • Website feedback link?

www.oracle.com and otn.oracle.com would have to be about the only commercial websites on the planet that do not have a readily accessible "feedback" link off the main page or "contact us" pages.
I can't imagine how many bad links and so on that go unreported because it is just too difficult to figure out how.
Suggest you put those links in palce ... even if they just link to a forum like this

Oracle is "unbreakable" as well as it's website, don't you know that? ;)

  • Website feedback please

    Hi, i've created this website:
    http://checkoutni.com
I would appreciate your honest feedback, i don't offend easily so criticism is welcome.
The lady won't budge on terms of the current design layout, colours, etc.
Although i will try if someone can give me some good suggestions,
our aim is to keep this as a one-page website.
I've had the site on here before for feedback but this is the pretty much finished version now.
The bottom right box may look a little empty but i plan to put
her facebook page link in there.
    Thanks
    Daniel

    Hi
No offence but change the color back and increase the font size, as the white for me is worse than the previous color for reading purposes.
i showed her the current version and a version without the pink, i was expecting her to say
the version without the pink was the better but she prefered the pink.
I know it is a bit of a cliché, and it was pink for a boy and blue for a girl until the late 1930's, but over the last 40 years the majority of younger females do now associate pink with female. It may also be helpful to know that colors for females are often better expressed as tints or shades of a particular color than 'full-on' color choices, (except for some notable exceptions).
As for typography, straight heading and paragraph formats are not recommended for females, (except fact based items) as females tend to prefer short 'this is this' items with a slightly different style, (this can be anything from a slightly shorter line-length, to a different style of first-letter to start) and then longer explanations in a more 'standard' readable format.

  • Website feedback

Surprisingly enough - I can't seem to find a way to contact Nokia and give them feedback on their website. There's not even a dedicated forum for it!
So, should I just go ahead and post about it right here or did I miss something? Or perhaps I should email Nokia Care and select "Other" for a subject?
It's weird if you ask me. Perhaps they just think that their website is perfect or don't want anyone commenting on it...

It's not so much of a problem as it is a complaint. I just can't believe that even today, after so many years of having this problem, their "Compare devices" feature is still broken as h*ll displaying left out or even FALSE information
I'd like to hear from they why on earth the won't ever fix this. Who's responsible for the information given when comparing devices? Here are a couple of good, embarrassing examples of why this service/feature should be throughly looked over by someone:
Comparing the N81, N73 and N95 - I end up with the following cryptic information.
    * Display size for both the N73 and N95 is 240x320 pixels while the N81 is said to be 320x240...
    * The number of Megapixels is only displayed for the N81. The other models doesn't show anything at all...
    * Zoom is "4x digital" for the N81, "20x digital" for the N73, and "Yes" for the N95...
    * Neither the N73 nor N95 is said to have autofocus...
    * The N81 is said to have a flash even though it's just a regular lamp. Funny enough they haven't written ANYTHING on the N95, which ALSO utilizes a lamp, and the best part is that the N73 - being the only device here that actually HAS one - doesn't show any information at all...
Nokia should either go through all of the information one model at a time and make fixes where appropriate, or remove the feature all together. Becuase as it is now it's not helping at all - but the opposite.
How hard can it be? Really? Again - it's been like this for years. I know I myself wouldn't mind helping out if I could.

  • Portfolio site feedback / google verification problems PLEASE ADVISE.

Firstly I have an iweb designed illustration/photography site which I would greatly appreciate feedback on (ease of use, loading problems etc...etc...):
    http://www.matt-dawson.co.uk/
Cheers for any constructive comments. I've been getting sections of the browser background not loading in first time on Safari...does anyone else find this, suggestions...?
Further to this, a number of related questions (I'll keep it short and sweet, I know to many they may be tired old questions but I've searched old topics and despite everything I'm still puzzled...please advise).
problems getting listed on google: 1,2,3. FYI my site has been running for 2 months now.
1)which URL do I try to list with google? My site is forwarded from an NTL homepage:
    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/matthew.jdawson
to my domain provider. Do I try to get google to list my www.matt-dawson.co.uk site (as I've been trying to) or must I try to list my ntl homepage...? If the latter is the case how do I ever get my concise .co.uk URL to be listed on Google...?!
2)Tried both methods of google verification for www.matt-dawson.co.uk to no avail. The HTML file approach gives me the message "404 error, status of 200 (ok) in the header" so I followed googles advice RE this and opted for the Meta tag approach which also refuses to work. I've opened the iweb index.html in text edit (with ignore rich text clicked) and tried to insert the metatag where google said to but despite many attempts trying different possible insertion points in the text, no luck. Can anyone make the 'simple' even simpler for me...?
    3) finally, I understand from looking at past topics that even by typing my site name in this forum I have increased my chances of google eventually finding me as this forum gets crawled... is that correct...? I don't have contacts with websites that would link to me so that avenue is closed to me at present...
Sorry if anyone feels I'm treading over old ground but this is really foxing me... the brilliant iweb only holds your hand so far before you have to fend for yourself!
I'd very much appreciate anyones advise. Many thanks! Matt

Welcome to the Discussions, Matt. Regarding your website -- I found having to always click on HOME or the Back button an annoyance. I realize it looks more "arty" to omit the menu, but it serves a purpose: to efficiently navigate between sections of your site.
When arriving at a section, you show the section name as a reminder -- except at the INFO section. You may want to consider including "INFO" both for orientation and consistency.
And at that section you have the text: "(Click here to open an email message)". You may want to consider using the Mail app's "stamp" icon instead and enabling that as a link to the mail app -- it would be easier to see on the screen and a bigger target to click on. You could optionally add a short title such as "Email me".
Same at the Illustration section -- "(for link to Amazon click here)" -- you could use instead an Amazon logo button and perhaps a short title.
