Possible locations for Listener.ora in a global listener configuration

Can someone please let me know what are the possible locations for keeping listener.ora in a global listener configuration.
i know about /etc and /var/opt/oracle , any other locations allowed by Oracle?
I have currently placed it in /etc/oracle. Not sure if this is correct.

Hm never heard of global listener configuration.
Basic listener configuration file listener.ora is always in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin dir or in $TNS_ADMIN directory.
Listener configuration may differ for different oracle home versions.

But from what I understand, you can define the TNS_ADMIN environment variable to define a central location for the listener.ora file.

I got the location and file also.
But the problem starts now.
When i'm sending launch Pick release in OM concurent manager throw a error status.

And for this i've i got some solution from metalink,
i.e as follows

in this i want to perform activity like
1- change the UTL_FILE_DIR to have in front the same value like $APPLPTMP,
ex: /usr/tmp
you need to change it in initSID.ora and reboot the database after
2- grant all user read/write permissions over that directory:
chmod 777 /usr/tmp
As I've win-XP there is no need to set permission.
and now i'm Confused.
What to do?

Configuring tnsnames.ora / listener.ora with HOST = localhost

Dear Oracle experts,
presently I'm trying to configure an Oracle installation on a Win2k server
to work with HOST = localhost entries in my tnsnames.ora and listener.ora.
I have to do that because I want to use that Oracle installation as an image
for several computers which will get different IPs and computer names.
My problem is, taht I only can configure my entries with a real IP adres (127.0.0.1 does not work ) or with the present name of the system but not with localhost or 127.0.0.1.
My listener.ora looks like below :

The listener above lead to a

if I try to connect via iSQLPlus. If I exchange HOST = localhost with HOST = mydnsname the I can connect to the computer via isqlplus.
Is there any possibility to configure the listener and tnsnames without using real IP adresses ?

1 - you can simply copy the files from the server to the client.
If they are correct, it must work fine
2 - Follow the examples inside the
$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/samples

The server must have the listener.ora. The client does not need
it if you don't have a database there.
I cannot tell you what is mandatory in the file, and what is not.
The listener.ora has the interface (addr or name)

Both machines can, and should have similar TNSNAMES.ORA:
tnsnames.ora has the address or name of the server, and the Name
of the database you wish to connect to.

How to move listener.ora

Hi all,
i have a question about listener.ora. I just see in OEM that listener.ora are in /u01/app/grid/network/admin/listener.ora but its a old configuration (before we megrated to 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.3), how can i move this to the right path? (/u02/app/grid/network/admin/listener.ora).
The database now is 11.2.0.3 (RAC with 2 nodes, and ASM) on RHEL 5.3.

Thank you for your suggestion.
But i do not think it is really required to change P96 tnsnames.ora.
Because, T72 database is in a Linnux box where several other DB are also there.
(Our landscape,NOn-PRD DB instances are together in 1 linux box)
DB13 jobs of other instances are working fine.
Only difference is T72 sap instace is a windows server where as other instances are in AIX.
In DB13c, windows system is configured as without ABAP server .
                 UNIX systems as With ABAP server.
All were working with this configuration till few days ago.

Figuring out location of tnsnames.ora and listener.ora file.

Hello.
Is there a way to figure out what my oracle instance is reading in terms of tnsnames.ora and/or listener.ora file? According to the 10g docs, they can be found in a few places:
1. $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
2. $TNS_ADMIN
3. in a global configuration directory, on solaris it is /var/opt/oracle.
How would I know which one my instance/lsnrctl is reading, aside from checking out differences in behavior?
Plus, how would I change where to look for the file?

On Solaris you can use 'truss' on the binary and grep for all the open() calls to see exactly which files are being used or tested for in order. I had an issue once where a tnsnames.ora was being used and it turned out to be $HOME/.tnsnames.ora (IIRC). There are similar calls under Linux (strace).

Help with Listener.ora file location on Suse Linux

Ok, 2 scenarios
Scenario 1
Installed Oracle 10.1.0.3.0 on Suse 9.2, the location of the listner is: /oracle/dborafiles/application_name/instance/admin/netadmin/
Which is great, as this is where i want the listener and tnsnames.ora files to be under.
Scenario 2
Installed Oracle 10.2.0.1.0 on Suse 9.2 (using exactly the same method for doing the above instllation), and for some odd reason, the location of Listner and tnsnames.ora files are under:
/oracle/dboracle/orabase/product/10.2.0.1.0/network/admin/
This is the wrong location for me, I want the listner and tnsnames .ora files to be under same like scenario 1.
2 Questions:
Q1: why the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files are diffrent location in Scenario 2 comapred to Scenario 1.
Q2: How do I correct it.
Note: the TNS_ADMIN in .profile is exactly the same for the above 2 installations, changed the applciation name and sid offocure, but all the same:
TNS_ADMIN=/oracle/dborafiles/applicatio_name/instance_name/admin/netadmin

For a long time now, the tnsnames and listener files have been placed in the ${ORACLE_HOME}/network/admin by default. That is the location that the installer will create these files in.
Don't know why 10.1.0.3.0 install created the files in that folder. That is not the default behaviour in versions prior to this and versions after this.
Check the settings of the environment variables that were in effect at the time of 10.1.0.3.0 install.

Listener.ora and Tnsnames.ora created in a different location

I have both the files i.e Listener.ora and Tnsnames.Ora in a location called D:\OraHome_1 and not in D:\OraHome_1\Network\Admin !! Also I do not have the sqlnet.ora file in either of these two locations.
Though conn sys/pswd@sid is working fine and DB is also up and running, "conn / as sysdba" is not working. I would like to restore these files in their actual location and make "conn / as sysdba also working".

You may not need the listener.ora - it is kinda "optional". Not sqlnet.ora either. There are defaults to survive on.That's fine but I still would like to know why these files got created in a directory different from oraclehome\network\admin?

What should I use for my global_name and sid_name for my listener.ora,

ORA-12541: TNS:no listener, (error, in oracle 11g for window 7, 64 bit)

ORA-12541: TNS:no listener, error, in oracle 11g for window 7, 64 bit
While connecting as localhost is pretty well.
but command: sqlplus username@'192.168.52.178:1521/orcl' on the same machine is producing above mentioned error on oracle 11g for window 7, 64 bit.

Multiple extproc entries in listener.ora

Hello gurus and friends,
I have two versions of Oracle
(8.1.5 and 8.1.6) running on the
same server.
Is it possible to set up a single listener
serving both instances to have 2 different
extproc services with differnet locations
for oracle home.
If I don't do this, and just have one
extproc, it invariably points to the wrong
oracle home and errors immediately.

Yes this is possible. Consult the Net8
Administrator's guide for the full details.
In short you will need to:
1. use the 8.1.6 listener
2. configure the 8.1.6 listener.ora file to include 2 separately named extproc addresses
in this example I use the 0 suffix for 8.1.5 and 1 for 8.1.6
3. In the SID_DESC list make sure you use a
full path to the program for the PROGRAM
attribute. If you don't then the 8.1.6
listener will use the 8.1.6 version of
extproc for the 8.1.5 instance.
4. Each tnsnames file (8.1.5 and 8.1.6) must have the appropriate extproc entry. I've included the one for 8.1.5 below.

Specify the location for any newly added column

Hi friends,
Is it possible in Oracle to specify the location for any newly added column. why it always goes to
the last , I want to add a new column at first.
If it is possible and anybody knows please tell me.

Hi Chandrakishore,
Not exactly a spatial question but the answer is "no" as far as I am aware.
TOAD for Oracle has a nice feature called "Rebuild Table" that provides a GUI interface for redefining and moving columns around. Basically it generates all the required DDL for you - it saves all the constraints, indexes, triggers, etc. Then it creates a new table with your changes, renames the old table with a suffix and replaces all the constraints, indexes, triggers on the new table. Most helpful.
However - see this makes the post spatial in nature :) - for as long as I have been around this feature of TOAD has not been able to handle SDO_GEOMETRY columns - failing with "ORA-22917: use VARRAY to define the storage clause". The good news is the new TOAD 10 now is free of this bug.
This is not meant to be a commercial for TOAD, I just don't know of any other product with this feature. Others may know of similar things perhaps or you can write a function yourself in PL/SQL.
