POWERBOOK G4 battery lasts for a MINUTE after 17months of use

I bought my PB last November of 2004 and decided not to buy AppleCare. From then on, I tried to use the battery as often as I could. I did charged 100% as advised by Apple to NEWBIES like me. Few days ago, I started to experience a freaky thing about my PB - on battery, when it drains down approx. 80%, my PB just shuts off. Turning it on again, will mean that I have to adjust the date&time as it sets back to 04/01/1970 (9AM).
Not knowing this could be a battery problem, I tried charging it fully and run it on battery. SAME SITUATION HAPPENED. I then started reading some posts, which by the way very helpful in terms of available tips; But they are just too many now to follow which one is the best to do.
I started restarting my PMU, date&time needed to be set again, but still the battery behaves the same.
I tried installing iBatt (trial version) and got the following diagnosis:
Capacity: 1.217 Ah
Voltage: 12.439 V
Current Charge: 1.217 Ah
% Charge: 100%
State: Trickle
Grade: D-
The text belows reads that: MY BATTERY IS VERY WORN OUT AND IS TIME TO REPLACE IT.
I am not really sure if these readings are true. Because everytime I tried using the battery, PB will shut off at approx 80% battery left. Plugging it to the main, will start charging the battery at approx. the same charge. Meaning there are still much battery charge but my PB does not recognize it? I am really confused.
I dont want to throw this battery and want to solve this in the cheapest way as I can.
At the moment I am trying to run the X-charge, but it seems I need more time to know the results.
Coconut battery looks cool but I am using OS Panther.
I couldn't however find a link to download Capacity meter.
Are there any other appli for Panther to get enough and good diagnosis of my battery. Is it really time to change it?
Please, any tiny bits of info would be appreciated.
Grad student in Japan.

Thank iFelix. You were my first buddy here.
I will still try to spend a little of my time to diagnose the battery. By the way, are there cheaper batteries aside from what Apple offers? Or it is safer to get the Apple's.
In addition to my story, since the X-charger that my battery is 100% charged and it has already stopped charging. I used and observe the battery while using my PB; After draining down to 79%, my PB shuts itself again - and same condition happened: back to the 1970 date&time, and when I plugged it, it started charging from 79%. Why not 0%?
Please fill me in.
Thanks

  • HT1338 my mac pro has 4 years already and the battery lasts for 10 minutes top. why should i do? get a new battery or what?

please help me what should i do

Assuming you mean a Macbook Pro laptop and not the Mac Pro tower, then batteries wear out.  4 years is a long time for a battery to be in constant use.  In general I've ended up replacing my laptop batteries about once ever 2 years, and at that time I'm often down to 30 to 45 minutes of battery life.
So if you are not ready to get a new Mac, by all means get a new battery.

  • What should I do if my compaq presario 319 battery could not last for 15 minutes?

My compaq presario notebook PC series pre-installed with windows vista home premium edition battery can not last for 15 minutes when am using my laptop. I want to know if you could give me a possible solution.
    Mark: 319 Compaq

Thanks and waiting to hearing from you.

First try claibrating the battery, use the safe mode method on this page
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=4125509&docname=c0081...
Once calibration is done and you have re-charged it fully, check the Status of the battery
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=4125509&docname=c0082...
if this does not get any more run time you need to replace the battery.

  • I bought the songs break-even and nothing by the script. And both of them stop after 41 seconds and they're supposed to last for four minutes.

As you give the price in £'s I assume that you are here in the UK, in which case try deleting the incomplete tracks from your iTunes library and redownload them (re-downloading isn't possible in all countries but is in the UK) via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
If they re-download in the same state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that album and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

  • My iPhone 4 is only 14 months old over dropped very well looke after, one day the lock button stops then the volume buttons, now the headphone port does not work and the battery lasts about 4 hours after full charge I still have a year left on my contract

My phone is 2 months out of warranty, it's never been dropped or miss used yet the past week every day something has gone wrong with it. First the lock button stopped then the side volume buttons. Then the head phone port when I putt headphones in the phone turns the volume
Down automatically and it won't turn up until I take my headphones back out. The battery lasts 4 hours max after a full charge and today I took my phone off the docking charger and all my music has gone! The phone is breaking down more and more everyday what is going on! I know people who have had there iPhones years an non of this happen! I still have a year left on my contract too!

Don't worry. If something was up, OnyX would have given you proper warnings and recommendations. On your next render, can you set the render logging to Extra per Frame Info? Also, if you don't mind, untwirl the render info and see, which parts it is processing. Either the life info reveals long file read and write times or the render log may reveal odd variations in teh per-frame render times. A common problem for instance with multi-processing are the first few frames being rendered very fast, but then a longer gap occuring inbetween because the program chokes on writing too many files at once. Similar patterns sometimes appear with network setups or - ultimately relevant for you - with RAIDs that use large cache drives. In the latter case often reducing or turning off the harddrive's internal cahe using the vendor's configuration tool can improve things...

  • ICal adding alert for 35791394 minutes after events

Since I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, I'm now getting random Alerts set for 35791394 minutes after the event (between one to three alerts with the same number of minutes for each event). I'm syncing with iCloud to an iPhone 4S and iPad (3), both with most recent iOS. All calendars are set to default with None for Alerts (on all devices).

I've been following this - and have just been holding off contacting Apple, since it seems there's no fix yet from what some of you have gone through - But I've done a few tests tonight and can replicate the alert - here's what I found - maybe this can shed some light on the bug for some Apple tech:
Make event in Calendar - no alert
Open it on iPhone - shows alert at time of event
Edit it on iPhone - now in Calendar it shows Alert - Message 35791394 minutes after.
Edit on Calendar to set Alert to NONE,
iPhone still shows Alert at Time of Event
Edit iPhone to remove Alert to NONE
Calendar still shows NONE (as before)
Edit iPhone timing of event, still alert None
    Calendar still shows NONE
    ---------NEXT-------
Make event in Calendar - no alert
iPhone shows Alert at Time of Event
Remove alert, set to None AND edit time of event on iPhone
    Calendar still shows no alert.
-----So it seems to me that an event created first on Calendar with no alert - shows up on iPhone with Alert at Time of Event - then if you edit it on iPhone - it goes back to Calendar with the Alert -Message 35791394 minutes after.
But... if you FIRST remove the Alert on the iPhone before editing the time of event - it doesn't create an alert back in Calendar.

  • How long does the IPhone5c battery last for without hardly any usage with about 2/3 to 3/4 left?

How long does the IPhone5c battery last for without hardly any usage with about 2/3 to 3/4 left?
Has the side affect of charging, where the battery's life gradually decreases overall with each charge, been fixed ?

    Eric,
They did say 12-14 hours, but as is always the case with such estimates, they invariably quote the 'best possible scenario' and almost never mirror 'real world' conditions.
If, from a fully charged position, you simply switch on your nano, and set it to continuously play through a long set of songs, with EQ off, backlight off, modest volume (50%) don't touch it during playback, then you might just get somewhere near this figure - and if you don't then it's either not been conditioned properly or it's faulty.
If you use it like me, daily for a couple of hours, with 2 secs backlight and switch songs regularly, using fairly high volumes then 6-8 hours is more likely. It'll even drain when it's not in use, even in sleep mode, albeit very slowly. They also tend to drain more quickly before they've been through their first few charge cycles (the conditioning period).
Personally I haven't got a problem with this though I can understand why some people have. It's not very impressive in this respect. Apple should be able to come up with something much better - maybe they should talk to Sony

  • XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

Since the last update, XOrg has been using 99% of my CPU power for about three minutes after it is started. This happens whether I am using Slim, console login, whatever; I checked with top and it is definitely X that is using up the CPU power. This happens on Debian as well as Arch.

So I reenabled "glx" and "DRI" and everything seems just fine.  I believe the culprit in my case was simply the "NoAccel" flag being false by default.
This is now what my xorg.conf looks like:

  • All of my songs now last for one minute thrifty seconds. Most start at the beginning and stop at 90 seconds, a few start in the middle - but total play time is always 1:30. What's wrong?

All of my songs , when played, now last for exactly one minute thirty seconds. Most start from the beginning and cut off at 90 seconds, some start in the middle. What's wrong?

It appears that iOS 7.1 fixed this.

  • ITunes Not Responding for 10+ Minutes After Launch

Whenever I launch iTunes on my PowerBook G4, it takes over ten minutes to launch, during which time it is frozen (i.e., beach ball, shows as "Not Responding" in the Activity Monitor). This happens regardless of whether I connect to my local music library or my external drive library. The problem started a month or two ago, although I can't recall exactly when.
Once I let iTunes do whatever it's trying to do for the ten minutes or so, it's fine. It's just frustrating having to wait ten minutes every time I open iTunes, and having to deal with the CPU cranked at 100%.
    Any ideas?
    - Keith
P.S. I tried turning off Genius, and that did not do the trick.

Let's do a test to see just what iTunes is doing (hopefully).
Open Activity Monitor (Applicatons/Utilities) and select 'All Processes, Hierarchically' from the menu at the top right.
Click on the '% CPU' heading so that it turns blue. If the little triangle is pointing down, good. If not, click it again.
    Open iTunes.
Find whatever goes to the top of the list. It will most likely be using at least 80% of your CPU.
    What is it called?
With whatever is at the top of the list selected, click the Inspect icon.
    Click the Statistics tab.
Take a screenshot of the window (Shift-Command-4 followed by the spacebar, then click on the window). You'll refer to this later.
Now, tell me what it says under the following:
    Parent Process
    Process Group
    User
    Recent Hangs
    % CPU
    CPU Time
    Faults
    Threads
As well as anything else you think I should know.
Also, look at the iTunes process. Is there a triangle next to it? If so, is the process using a lot of % CPU inside it? What's inside the iTunes process (indented, under it)?
We'll just use this test to learn more about what's going on when you open iTunes.

  • Reader got "not responding" for a minute after click a hyperlink in PDF document

Hi.  Anyone got similar experience that the Reader hanged for a while after clicked a hyperlink (to an internal website)?  From the NetMon trace, it showed that the Reader made query to our internal DNS with an unknown FQDN (just "com.hk"), then waited for time-out and came back the response.  Want to know the mechanism how and why it makes such query.  My Acrobat Reader is in version 10.1.3.

    Hi,
    To use Network Diagnostics:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences > Network
Click Diagnostics to open Network Diagnostics, and then follow the onscreen instructions.

  • Movie freezes while playing. Lasts for several minutes and continues to happen throughout movie.

Movie freezes while playing on Apple TV. Will remain frozen for several minutes and happens repeatedly throughout movie.

Could be related to interference. Check istumbler or netstumbler to verify. If on wifi try ethernet.

Why does question stay unanswered? This is a very bad practice from Apple.
apple has nothing to do with questions being answered or not, the people who answer questions on here are just other users like you who are not getting paid to be here
