Precise positioning of components

i was wonderin how could i precisely position textarea components in an applet???i understand that layout managers arent supposed to be used when precise positioning is concerned...
also, can there be any way where u can draw string or write text on a graphics objectlike drawrect-->rectangle????

use setLayout(null) on the applet.
use textarea.setLocation(x,y)  to position the component
use textarea.setSize(w,h)      to set the size of the component
overide the paint method of the applet and use :
graphics.drawString(string,x,y);
graphics.drawLine(x1,y1,x2,y2);
graphics.drawRect(rect.x,rect.y,rect.width,rect.height);Noah

    I need to set the position of components on a page that contains a MenuBar, but MenuBar does not provide a getPreferred size method.
    How can I get the MenuBar's size in AWT?
    Thanks.

    A menubar is not a general component that is added to a frame like any another. It is the specific responsibility of the setMenuBar/setJMenuBar methods to deal with this.

  • Precisely positioning the point at which the edit starts

    Hello,
    I need to know how to precisely position the point where I can start editing a file.
    I can precisely position where the playback starts - just by moving the indicator with the right/left arrow keys.
    But how do I precisely position the insertion point (the point at which I want to start deleting something in the file)? Right now I am using the mouse to click on areas.
    What I need is to be able to move the insertion point minutely, as in maybe using CTRL arrow (which doesn't work).
    Can anybody help?

  • Exact, precise positioning of Objects

    I have an application that needs to be very precise in the positioning of a text object (so that OCR can read it).  As an example, I can position an object at x=3.5 inches but I need to position at x=3.53.   I use the "Size and Position" dialog box and enter x=3.53.  Get out of the dialog, go back in and it has changed to 3.52, Get out and in and now it is 3.51.  Once at 3.5 it stays at 3.5.  Position seems to work well at 1/10 of an inch but I need 1/100 of an inch.  Snap to Grid & Free-Form Placement Options can be on or off - no difference.
    This is my first post.

    James Terry You sent a reply via email with discussion regarding setting the grid to 0.01 inches (which is 1/100 of an inch).  When I sent grid to 0.01" and moved them manually without using "Size and Position" dialog window, the objects stayed where they needed.  Going in and out "Size & Position" does cause it to move.  But by forcing 0.01" with snap turned on, I GOT WHAT I NEEDED!  James: put in a response and then I can award points and mark this answered.

  • Programatic Generation and positioning of  components using Drag and Drop

    Hi,
    I am relatively new to ADF and UI Designing. Im trying to generate a flowchart using drag and drop feature in ADF. This involves creation of dragging images such as start,decision .. etc from one panel to another and dynamically creating a flowchart.
    Up to now i have managed to drag images from panel1 to panel2 and create them dynamically in the bean class. However im stuck at this point .. Im not able to position the draggable components on the desired position in the panelGroup. They either appear horizontally or vertically.
    Is there any way to achieve this. Also is it possible to assign a dropTarget to a a target component which is created dynamically ?
    Thanks in anticipation ....
    Lyle

    Hi Lyle,
    I am too only 4 months old to adf ,i use jdeveloper 10g.
    In 10g for the components to be placed at desired locations i think is somewhat possible. While you can arrange them by using spaces which causes
    f:verbatim tag to appear or you can use ADF Faces Core items like Object Spacer and Object Seperator where you can set their length and width to space objects on page...

  • Alignment & Guides For Precise Positioning???

    I can't find them anywhere, but there's got to be a way to center, align, add guides, move, etc. objects in FCE, right?
    If not, how do professionals align objects (e.g. scaled videos, images, etc.) to precise areas of the screen over and over? That is so I can place a video as the same exact spot on the screen without having to guestimate by eye and touchy mouse where the video should go.
    I mean how do you even find the center of the screen, and place object centers there without just eyeballing it? Where are the rulers? (not timeframe rulers)
    And why can't you move object wireframes around with arrow keys (like in every other graphic program)? What do you use instead to precisely move objects?
    Thanks for any pointers.

    Hi -
    If all the source material you are placing within the iPad screen is all the same size. then you only need to position the first instance of the image in the screen. Once that is positioned to your liking, click on the clip that you have positioned and type Command + C to copy it.
    Next edit the next image you want to appear in the iPad screen, and once it on the timeline, click on it and type Option - V to to bring up the Paste Attributes window. In that window, you can select the attributes you applied to the first clip and paste them to the second. This will instantly position your second clip where you first one was. You can repeat this as necessary.
    If you source material is a variety of shapes and sizes, then an easier solution would be to make the iPad graphic image in two forms - one with the default screen and one with the screen made transparent (this can be done in Photoshop and the images saved as PNG files to preserve transparency).
    This would allow you to use the image with the transparent screen as a frame to mask slight imprecise placement of the images that are going to be showing in the transparent portion.

  • Precise positioning/move of gradient annotator?

    Hello, when one has selected an object and assigned a gradient fill, and after pressing G to select the gradient tool, the X and Y coordinates correspond the location of the shape, not the location of the gradient.  Meaning, even if I know the coordinates where I want to place the start point of the gradient annotator, I can't manually enter them.  The Info panel will show the location of the mouse pointer, but not while I hold down the mouse button while dragging the annotator, so that doesn't really help much.  It appears that you just can't select a gradient in the same way you can select an object.  If I could, I could simply use the align commands to take care of this for me, or move things relative to some point.
    Oh also it seems that snapping to points or grids does not work when moving the annotator.  Nudging also does not work.  Maybe I am going about this in the wrong way?  because surely people want to have high precision with positioning their annotators?
    Something else that might be helpful is if I could move the annotator on-the-fly while also expanding it or rotating it -- with the spacebar similar to how it's done with segments and shapes.
    Thanks in advance for advice!

    Wow. I've been wanting to know this like forever too but three years and still no response.

  • Achieving precise positioning of conditional dashboard sections

    Working with 11.1.1.7.0.
    I have three dashboard sections that are conditional.  All three sections are in the same column.  Only one section will be visible at any given time.  The sections "turn off" and "turn on" as designed, in response to a dashboard prompt. That part works just fine.
    Here's the problem: There is something about the section object that causes the top of Section #2 to display exactly 2 pixels below where the top of Section #1 was.  When I make the prompt selection that turns off Section #1 and turns on Section #2, Section #1 turns off and Section #2 appears, but it is 2-pixels too low.  Then I make the prompt selection that turns off Section #2 and turns on Section #3, and Section #3 has moved down another 2 pixels.  So if you're thinking about it on a grid, the top of Section #1 appears at vertical position y, Section #2 appears at position y-2px, and Section #3 appears at position y-4px.
    The same thing happens sideways if I place the sections in three side-by-side columns.  Section #1 is at horizontal position x, Section #2 appears at position x+2px, and Section #3 appears at position x+4px.
    I've tried setting the section properties to 0 for all padding values (top, bottom, left, right) but that did not help.
    So it appears that a conditional section never truly disappears.  It sort of feels like the contents are supressed, and a 1px border all the way around still remains, thus adding 2px in both directions.
    Any thoughts on how to make conditional sections appear precisely where they "should" be?

    The "empty" 2px are the reserved space where the disabled objects actually reside. I doubt you can tweak the rendering engine ;-)

  • Positioning Screen Components

    Hello All.
    I am using APEX version 2.2.1.
    Would someone please offer me words of wisdom as to how best to position
    report regions and individual fields (check boxes, text items, radio items, etc.)
    on an APEX page.
    I enjoy using APEX but find it maddening trying to position items on screen.
    The page that popsup giving where certain screen regions are located is
    not helpful. At times I long for the GUI interface of a frontpage or dreamweaver
    with respect to positioning components.
    And so, any tips on this mater would be really appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Elie

    Hello,
    That's a pretty expansive question with all sorts of answers. It totally depends on what sort of layout that you are looking for what items you need what your page template is and on and on. If you have a specific layout example your need it's much easier to help you out.
    1: I try to never put items in a report region I create a holder region above it for controls or I use the trick of splitting my region templates into a top and bottom portion to give me greater layout options (example http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=11933:86)
    2: In most forms put textarea's as the last items and put a start stop table item before the first textarea
    3: During development just put outlines around your #REGION_POSITION_N# substitutions it makes it much easier than guessing then take them out when you don;t need them anymore http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=11933:9
    4: I guess my best words of wisdom is leave your layout till the end of your development. Build all your forms get all your branches validations main navigation and logic working then work on the layout and look.
    I have yet to find a layout I can't produce sometimes it take a couple hoops to jump through but thats pretty much any project or technology.

  • Wireless signal fluctuates a lot.

    I'm having issues with my G4 mini. The wireless signal keeps fluctuating up and down. It is connected to the internet via my Airport Express. My G4 Powerbook has no problems with the connection and always shows full siganl so I don't know what to do. Checking the speed on my mini shows a connection of about 2-10mbps but on my Powerbook the speed is about 48mbps. Please help me. I assume if there is a problem with my aiport on the mini it would either work or wouldn't, not half half.

    Speed is related to signal strength so the fact the speed seems rather low would also suggest the signal really is fluctuating, not just appears to be.
    There can be many reasons for variable signal, and sadly no one single one of them is certain to be a culprit. You may be suffering from interference caused by household devices such as cordless phones or microwave ovens, or even nearby wifi systems on the same or adjacent channels. Often switching channels using your Airport Admin Utility could help.
    However, much can also be due to precise positioning of components, and the location of structures which can either directly impact the transmitted signal (such as duct work) or on signals being bounced around the area causing what is known as 'mulipath'. It's also possible for a number of outside influences, such as local paging systems or other radio devices, to create interference by intermodulation distortion. None of these things you can see or hear, but all can dramatically impact on signal strength from moment to moment.
    And of course yes, it's possible for there to be a hardware issue resulting in poor or variable reception - typically that would be a damaged antenna inside the system, or one that is not fully connected to the airport card. In the latter instance, often the earth braid isn't firmly connected, allowing any stray RF (radio frequency) source to distort and adversely affect signal.
    The first thing I would do is move the Airport Express base station and the mini around a little to see if you can get a better, more stable, signal with one or both in slightly different locations. To help in this, I'd suggest you download a copy of AP Grapher from http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/ and watch for other wifi signals being listed and their relative strengths. This will tell you whether you might have an interfering wifi in your area. Also with your own wifi selected, watch the signal levels. Look to position the system and/or AE base station where it shows noise as consistently lowest and com quality as consistently high.

  • Positioning of GUI components

    a question for the java veterans out there,
    i am a student of programming and i wish to learn how to place/position GUI components in java by hard coding it. Is there any trick/technique that this could be done easily? I don't want to rely on netbeans's GUI maker to make my programs's GUI for the rest of my life.
    any help is appreciated.
    (please don't make it quite complicated. ^_^)

    Hi,
    The link to the tutorial you requested is [Laying out Components within a Container|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/layout/index.html], more specific [Doing Without a Layout Manager (Absolute Positioning)|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/layout/none.html]. But I would suggest you start to learn using the default layout managers first before you venture out into the wild lands named 'absolute positioning'. The layout mangers supplied by Sun (and made by a big bunch of seasoned Sun Java Programmers) help you when something happens in your screen, like resizing the window. If you use absolute positioning you have to handle such cases yourself.

  • Can't position illustrator shape precisely.

    Am trying to position a shape precisely at position zero on the canvas. I enter "0" in the x-position field, and Illustrator jumps it to -.5 pixel location. It won't even let me manually position it at zero - jumps it to + or - .5 pixel point. Don't believe this is a "snapping" issue. It feels like the doc. has it's own grid that isn't necessarily alligned to the ruler readings, and the doc is alligning objects to the nearest pixel point.
    I need to be able to position items precisely to the last pixel. How can I make this happen? Help!

    It wasn't that I couldn't calculate or account for the stroke. Illustrator simply wouldn't let me place the object where I knew I wanted to. Obviously, I have to be able to use my x and y data field to precisely position my objects sometimes. Seems like those fields are based on the ruler and NOT the pixel grid. Guess I'll just leave pixel grid align off at all times. And, yes, then I will always position strokes outside or inside.

  • Print position and borders on custom package

    I have 2 questions related to the print module
    1- I have searched the web and couldn't find any indication of precise positioning options for cells (photos). When looking at the lrtemplate file, it seems like the position is driven by "bounds" and the parameters for AgMutableRect looks like (x start, y start, x end and y end). Units for bounds, imageHeight and imageWidth in this case are 72 * inch value (not sure if this is always true). I have tried modifying bounds values directly in the file and then open the template in lightroom and it worked. My question is what are "cellScreenBounds" and "cellTemplateScreenBounds" used for and what are the parameter values (and units)?
    cells = {
            anchored = true,
            bounds = AgMutableRect( 85.347767253045, 77.163734776725, 805.34776725304, 797.16373477673 ),
            cellScreenBounds = AgMutableRect( 24, 21, 229, 227 ),
            cellTemplateScreenBounds = AgMutableRect( 5, 5, 55, 54 ),
            imageHeight = 720,
            imageWidth = 720,
            page = 1,
    2- The next question is is it possible to have 2 outer borders, one very thin black and one large white -> on a white background? When trying from lightroom print module, it seems like the photo border is always the same color as the background color, only inner border can have a different color. Again, I have found those parameters in the lrtemplate file and  AgColor( 1, 1, 1, 1 ) seems to be white and  AgColor( 0, 0, 0, 1 ), seems to be black ... Anyone who knows what the parameters represent?
        imageBorderColor = AgColor( 1, 1, 1, 1 ),
        innerStrokeBorder = true,
        innerStrokeColor = AgColor( 1, 1, 1, 1 ),
        innerStrokeWidth = 18.084,
        lockToPhotoAspectRatio = false,
        metadataFontSize = 10,
        numLayoutPages = 1,
        oneImagePerPage = true,
        pageBackgroundColor = AgColor( 0, 0, 0, 1 ),
        pageBackgroundColorActive = true,
    To give you some background, this is what I'm trying to do -> Create a custom picture package to export as a jpeg to print as a 12x12 photo. On the picture package, I want to place (precise position) a few photos that will overlap, each with a big white border around the photo and a thin black border to frame the photo (so starting from center it would be -> photo, big white border, thin black border, white background)
    Thanks

    Thank you for the reply Rob
    There is no Avery template in the list that has 24 labels, which is why I was using the Custom Label
    I have tried many variations trying different widths and gaps between the labels, but in all cases by the time the 8th row is printeed the printing has crept up and is now overlapping onto the bottom of the 7th row label. The third column is printing on the gutter between the 2nd and 3rd column.
    When creating a Custom label it would appear that the Wizard works on Letter size Paper regardless of the paper size that the printer is set to. All my printers are set to A4 size paper.
    Letter Paper is 215.9mm x 279.4mm compared to 210mm x 297mm for A4. While the width is not a problem the length is less, and that may well be what is causing the problem when the Wizard creates the labels, despite changing the Paper size to A4. But the paper size can only be changed and set to A4 after the wizard has been given the label size and spacing for margins and gutters.
    In my view the Wizard should ask for the paper size and then ask for the label size settings and layout
