Preview slower with hardware GPU acceleration enabled than software only?

Sorry if this had been asked before.
But somehow my preview/playback was slower and choppy once I enable the hardware GPU acceleration(I mean I select the 'mercury playback engine gpu acceleration' under Project-Settings-General')
I followed the following tips to enable my graphic card, (thanks David)
http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm
I was working on a clip of approx 3 mins long with majority of the footage(1920 and 720) from a DSLR, some 1920 clips from gopro hd2 and some 1440 clips from a P&S camera(scale to 1920 to match the sequence setting). main effects applied (magic bullet looks).
Before I enabled my graphic card and selected it from the project setting, the preview was ok, nearly smooth all the way except some sections with dynamic links, but once I turn it on, the preview became ridiculously choppy, I couldn't believe my eyes, so I turned it off (select mercury playback engine software only), did playback again, it became much smoother!(or just as smooth as it was when it was under that setting, it's just that comparison gave me a bad impression of my hardware gpu acceleration).
btw: I'm running on a low spec laptop
Core™ i7-2670QM 2.2GHz turbo to 3.1GHZ
8GB DDR3 memory
NVIDIA GeForce 555M 1GB graphics
750G HDD(I partition to 150G system drive and 600G media drive) 5400RPM (I know, it's slow)
currently have about 80G and 400G empty space on two drives respectively.
15.6” HD display (max resolution 1366x768)
I know the machine is not a proper workstation to work with CS6, but the hardware gpu acceleration was slower than the software only gpu acceleration was beyond my understanding, not a minor difference we are talking about, it was much much slower!
Have I done something wrong?
Any tips would be appreciated.

Here's my guess.
MB Looks runs on the GPU at all times, though not in the same way as Adobe's 'accelerated' effects.  With CUDA off, the graphics card was free to process the Looks effects at full speed.  With CUDA on, PP took some of those resources and Looks processed slower.
Remove Looks and replace it with PP's native accelerated effects and you'll see what all the hoopla is about.

  • Resolution loss in multicam when GPU acceleration enabled

    Hello all,
Strange multicam problem here. I know others besides me have struggled with multicam playback resolution, but at least on the surface, this particular problem seems counter-intuitive.
When I enable GPU acceleration (I have a GTX 650 Ti BOOST), playback resolution is decreased in the multi-cam monitor. With CS5.5, this was extremely noticeable; now in CC, it's less apparent, but still detectable. The footage will blur slightly when playback begins, and then sharpen again when paused. If I disable GPU acceleration, playback resolution in the multicam-monitor is the same as the paused resolution.
Is this a bug, or something that should be expected? I can live with this, but it'd be nice not to have to disable GPU acceleration for multi-cam, and then re-enable it for other tasks.
    Thanks in advance.

Update: At least in some cases, I can see that the paused image is sharper with GPU acceleration enabled than the paused image without it. So the playback resolutions may well be the same with or without GPU, and all I'm seeing is a greater difference between playback and paused during GPU acceleration. Also, there may in fact be a drop during playback resolution in software only mode, albeit less noticeable.
(As mentioned though, this was certainly an issue I experienced in 5.5; don't know if anyone else has experienced something similar.)
My new question would be, is it possible with the right hardware to guarantee full resolution playback in multi-cam? I'm currently editing 4 cameras: 2 5DMIIIs, a GH2, and a Sony NX5U. Editing system is comprised of an i7 4770K overclocked to 4.2GHz, 16GB RAM, GTX 650 Ti Boost, and three HDDs: an SSD for OS and Programs, a 7200 for media and projects, and another 7200 for pagefile, previews, and media cache. Would creating a RAID 0 for the media files help at all in this case? Or is the drop in resolution I experience something I likely won't be able to change?

  • Artifacts with Mercury GPU Acceleration.

    Hello there,
I hope someone will be able to help me with a problem that has just started to occur on my PC.
I have Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.3). When I have the renderer switched to "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration" in project settings all my clips at 50fps playback with a green flickering line and blocky artifacts at the top of the frame. When GPU acceleration is switched off the problem is less noticable but there is still a line of pixels at the top of the frame that glitches. The artifacts are present when playing clips in the viewer as well as in the timeline.
I am in the middle of a music video which uses a lot of slow motion and until a few days ago this problem did not exist although playback was sometimes choppy and had crashed a couple of times recently. I have 6gb RAM and am editing native 720p footage from a canon DSLR. Clips shot at 25fps in 1080p playback without issues either with GPU off or on.
My graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 and the drivers are fully up to date.
Please help me out if anyone knows what the issue could be.
    Thanks very much
    Dan

    >GeForce GTX 285 and the drivers are fully up to date
I think you should not use an nVidia driver any later than 296.10
    Do NOT use 306.97 http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1084197
When you install 296.10 be sure to NOT select auto-update

  • Mercury GPU acceleration worse then software acceleration :(

I have to date the latest Premiere, and the latest Nvidia drivers..
    Two GTX 580 cards and a Intel i7 4930k.
The timeline I'm having uses loads of warp stabelizers, AVCHD footage and heavy speedgrade looks with masks and five primarys.
The gtx cards works sweall with Neat video nois, to make that clear (13,5fps on 32bit full 1080p)
With lumetri engine, it drops frames, it only plays perfectly when I turn of Cuda...! (on heavy looks)
And I get export errors on the warp stagelizer in export unless I turn of Cuda?!
Is it a bad Nvidia driver? Should I use a legacy one?
    Thanx grabs and gals!

From other comments around here ... the  "Lumetri Looks engine" and warp-stabilizer do participate in far more than their fair share of playback problems, masks can load the graphics processors too ... oft only "solved" by turning off Cuda or OpenCL with whatever card is there. There've been some folks with mighty expensive aproved Quadro cards .. who get better render times software only. They wasn't too pleased, of course ... and noting you've got two cards ... wishing you all the best ... but everyone's mileage varies these days. Sometimes good, sometimes ... not so.

  • Gpu acceleration on win8.1pro with gtx770 not working

    Hello All,
I have a pc installed with windows 8.1 pro, a GeForce gtx 770 with 4096 MB GDDR5, with the latest driver installed : 344.48
I am now on premiere 8.1.0(81) Build. but i have been using premiere in this machine since the first CC and the problem was the same.
I canot have gpu acceleration in premiere, the only option for video rendering is software only (it is greyed out and i can't change the option).
Now, from this adobe link :
http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/system-requirements.html#Adobe Premiere Pro CC (2014) system requirements and language versions
    My GPU should be supported.
    Extra specs of pc:
    MB: asus p9x79
    cpu: 4930k
    Ram: 64Gb
Hardrives: ssd for system and raid 0 of two WDred 4Tb
My question is, what can i do to pinpoint the problem? what can i do to make premiere use the gpu.
    Thanks,

    Hi all,
Thanks everyone for the help, just wanted to let you know that i finally got it WORKING! YEAH!!!
Long story short, re-installed windows carefully and without even installing the nvidia drivers it worked...
So what is wrong with all this? Before starting to rant, adobe wasn't even slightly in the problem equation, so thumbs up for adobe.
As i wrote above in another post, the first time that i installed this machine, i had some weird issues with windows 8.1, or so i thought that it was due to the new version of windows.
But the real problem came with the various software provided with Asus main-board and with the corsair cooler.
Although in win7 you could install everything without a problem, any software that came with the hardware that somehow was meant to control overclocking or fan speeds, would break windows 8 installation. I would get some TDR errors from windows(this means that some time the graphic driver would simply stop working and windows, attempting to restart it would give me some Blue screens of death!)
    The solution:
First i updated the mother bios to the latest update, this is a process that should be done carefully due to it's possible outcomes.
Just as a side note, after backing up all my files, a time consuming job because of my 8Tb raid, you have to be careful updating the bios, because it will set your settings to default! that is the only way it could be done, and it is all good.
But if you have your sata controller set to raid as i do, so you can set up a raid disk, the default value in the bios is IDE! and if you restart your pc with this setting changed, it will break down your raid drive! so after updating your bios, your main concern should be entering the bios right away and put the sata controller in raid mode again. I had some raids destroyed in the past due to this simple switch of setting, and god luck after this to get it back. it is not impossible, but i never managed to do it.. the only thing that i could do after this was to get back my data with Testdisk. if you know what testdisk is, you know what i'm talking about.
Now, simply install windows 8.1 and only install drivers. If possible, as i did, with the latest drivers downloaded form the manufacturers site.
Then do ALL updates from windows, this takes a while, because there are updates that only show up for install after others updates, about an hour of update, download,update,download....
After that you will see, that through windows update, you will get nvidia driver, not the latest but surely the most recommended by windows and every thing should work corectly.
I then downloaded the latest nvidia driver, and installed it also, but i only installed the driver, by selecting custom installation and unchecking everything except for the nvidia driver.
    And now, everything runs smoothly
I am a bit frustrated that, not one support from Microsoft, Nvidia or even Adobe, although adobe came closer that the others in helping me out, could tell me exactly what was wrong with my configuration.
I know this from the past but come on! you have to re install an OS to fix issues? Mac OS isn't perfect but it is a lot closer to it than windows 8. you can actually fix things instead of having to re-install everything.
What if all this big software companies could write a simple software for debuging? you know,
instead of asking if i have done all the steps for troubleshooting a problem, that i usualy have and this is why i'm contacting support to ask for extra help other than the one they're offering in troubleshooting guides.
A software that would run, and check these simple things, drivers versions, windows configurations, registry keys, software versions, conflicting IRQ's etc... and then, after having a good report of the situation, offer a good approach to resolve the solution.
Well, sorry for the long post, but maybe this will help others in similar situations.
Thanks again to all those who helped me.
    Cheers!

  • Playback and Rendering issues when GPU acceleration is enabled

I'm using the new MacPro with dual AMD FirePro D300. When I enable GPU Acceleration (Open CL) I can no longer play through an entire sequence. It specifically has issues playing through any layered graphics or titles, but seems to play with those disabled. I have tried having "Composite In Linear Color" enabled and disabled, and neither seemed to make a difference. It's the same deal when rendering. If I have titles, and use GPU Acceleration it jumbles clips, cuts to black or static, all manner of weirdness. Is there something I'm missing?
An example of what playback looks like if I have titles and GPU Acceleration enabled.

This computer thing seems complicated enough that if your system works better with GPU accel off, that's you best performance. I understand they've been trying to sort out these sorts of issues but there's so many dang variables, and trying to build software that interlinks with other complicated software is something no other NLE or Grading program does. That throws even more kinks into the list.

  • Brush lag GPU Acceleration with AMD FirePro M6000

    Hello,
I currently have a Dell Precision M6700 which I had replaced my old laptop with in attempt to fix this very problem. I'm using Windows 7 x64 with Photoshop CC x64. Whenever I attempt to use my Cintiq 13HD with GPU acceleration enabled, the brush lags horribly on the smallest of canvases. Disabling GPU acceleration fixes it but I use many of the tools such as canvas rotation greatly. I've checked everything from spacing in brushes to trying different drivers. My drivers for my 13HD are the latest and as are the drivers for the Firepro M6000. I'm extremely confused as AMD states that this is a certified adobe photoshop gpu and the FirePro line is made with excellent OpenGL support as far as I'm aware.
I've searched other threads before with this issue and attempted various fixes to no avail. I'm especially baffled as this is a workstation class GPU. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Amaron

    Hallo,
it's been some time since your post, but can you tell me whether the issue has been resolved? I have a Cintiq 21UX and I'm thinking about buying a Dell Precision M6700 with exactly that Video Card, but if there's no prospect of it being supported properly in current and future Versions of Photoshop, then that's no option...
    Thanks for any help!

  • IOS/AIR GPU accelerated Alpha Fade Problem

When I alpha fade a displayobject using Greensock with GPU acceleration enabled on an Adobe Air iOS app, objects will flicker at full opacity just as the entire object somewhere near the end of the fade to 0 alpha. I find this flickering occurs even when I don't fade to 0 alpha, and only on objects that are fading out (rather than fading in). The problem also seems to be specific to objects with TextFields (I use classic TextFields).
Any thoughts as to why this is happening and what I can do about it?

  • GPU acceleration for video editing

I am using cyberlink power director 12, adobe premiere elements 12, and sony vegas 12 (yes a lot of 12's). Problem is, my new notebook (msi gt70 dominator pro) doesn't let the NVidia 880m run for acceleration. I've used all these programs on desktop and with my previous 7 asus g750 laptops (the asus kept overheating so went msi). They all work great.
Nvidia geoforce is all set up optimum, and ive tried integrated and dedicated for each program (not that it should matter which is using to use program). All settings in the programs themselves are checked for hardware/gpu acceleration. This isn't my first time doing this, and laptop/desktop side by side all settings are identical. But when I go to the produce section, the box for acceleration isn't valid to click, no matter what final format I choose. Out of all 7 asus laptops ive had last 6 months, all of them worked just fine.
Any help, please. Shame I spent so much on laptop, finally got one that doesn't thermal throttle, and now programs don't work. I also reinstalled windows and programs once already, and that didn't fix it. All drivers are also 100% up to date.
Components are different than the asus, but that shouldn't matter. Asus had i7 4700 and gtx 860m/870m/880m ( I went through all of them jm js jz), my msi has i7 4810/4900 and 880m.

I've been working on this problem for days now, I was up until 2am this morning trying to figure it out.
I then plugged my monitor into my laptop for my son to watch music videos while I did some things around the house, and noticed that as soon as I plugged in the monitor it switched over to NVidia graphics not intel. While trying to figure this one out, I loaded power director to work on a movie, rendering takes so long I figure I should start now while im busy. Well, gpu acceleration works just fine. Just as before. I did absolutely nothing different.
Still haven't figured out how to run second screen off intel graphics, but now I don't know if I want to since that's the only thing that's changed and now gpu acceleration is working fine.

Rendering issues: Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014.0.1 Update does not fix" Occasional instance where sequences could never finished rendering"
It's been 3 days 3 technicians and still same issue. Everything has been tried except starting over which is not an option. Worked

    2. Same sequence of Ceremony (19 min sequence with AVCHD format and HDV) did not work in the faster computer. - i7 QUAD core 16 ram
    1 or 2 GB GPU
    3. Reception sequence of HDV footage only did not on both computer.
Please call the exterminator and get rid of all the bugs. I am spending more time
troubleshooting than editing….and that is bad

You really aren't reading what we write.
    Let's break it down:
Suitcase isn't working with the new application versions, because Suitcase has bugs in it's code or just doesn't know about the new application versions.
The only way to fix that is to fix the code for Suitcase.
Suitcase is written by Extensis, so only Extensis can fix the code for Suitcase.
So you are waiting on Extensis to fix their code to work correctly with the new applications.
This is not about the CC 2014 applications, this is about Extensis code not working, and Extensis needing to provide an update to make their code work.
To get a working version of Suitcase (which requires fixing bugs in Suitcase), you need to talk to Extensis.

  • GPU Acceleration for Lightroom

When will Lightroom have GPU acceleration like Photoshop CS4 has?

From what I've read GPU acceleration in CS4 currently only applies to canvas zooming and rotation... not EVERYTHING is accelerated by the GPU. So what effect (if any) would GPU acceleration for have for those items in LR? (honest question... I don't know.)
I've also read Adobe is planning on more features later on in CS to use GPU. So to me this appears currently as a first stage deployment of this technology... not TOO exciting in terms of actual benefit today, but with promising prospects in the future.
As for LR, I assume it all depends on what features would benefit from this (some would actually slow down if routed through GPU, if I understand some the writeup about this.)

  • GPU Acceleration Problem

I just upgraded to the new Mac pro with D700s and CC2014. My previous box had Windows 7 with CS5 and an old Geforce card. I noticed with GPU acceleration enabled that my photographed appeared softer and lacking detail when not 100% zoomed in. Disabling GPU acceleration completely fixes the issue but any other combo (unchecking everything and setting to Basic) doesn’t help. I find the issue very distracting but don’t wish to take a performance hit. Any help resolving this problem? I've attached an image showing the difference..

The only true representation of your image is at 100% view, 1:1.  At any other view, you are either discarding pixels or inventing them, making them up.
What exact  make and model of graphics card does your new Mac have?  How much VRAM on it?  Have you checked those specs against the list of video cards tested by Adobe?
It could well be that the card is not fully capable of supporting GPU acceleration.
Is your Mac Pro a desktop machine or a laptop Mac Book Pro?
What monitor are you using?  Is it a Retina screen?
The more details you give, the better chance you have of getting help for your issue.

  • 2D GPU acceleration for Linux Reader 8 (when it will be available)?

It would be nice if Adobe Linux Reader 8 could use "2D GPU Acceleration" in Linux too. It could be done using OpenGL driver. Nvidia Linux Geforce driver has support for shader technology in Linux too. ATI also uses its own accelerated OpenGL library in Linux.
Will Adobe make Linux Reader 8 with 2D GPU acceleration?

What a pity. Adobe reader is very slow even on fast machines when compared to open alternatives. 2D GPU acceleration could give a chance to Adobe Reader to work at least equally fast as open source viewers.
    However thanks for reply.

  • GPU acceleration on current 600 series nvidia cards

What current generation Nvidia GTX cards work with the GPU acceleration in Windows 7 64bit CS6.
I am aware of the Approved list of GPUs on Adobe's website but it’s out of date, I point to the MacBook Pro R's GTX650 being supported but not listed.
I need to buy a new (cheap <=$300) GPU but according to the approved list only upto 580 cards are supported and I can't seem to buy anything older than 600 series card.
This is a short term solution while the MBPR I use is being fixed/replaced.
Lastly I have an unused GTX460 can I get this working with the mercury playback, if so I will just use that

When this happen, the GUI part of Firefox will be unusable and has to be killed via Task Manager.
This doesn't happen if hardware acceleration is disabled.
