Printing on UNIX OS using Java

Hi All,
Here is the detailed situation:
1. We are running Oracle Application Server and Oracle Portal on an HP UX box in production.
2. We are developing using jDeveloper.
3. We have developed an application that generates a PDF file and then prints it. This application works fine on the developer machine which is Windows 2000/XP machine.
4. The same application does not work when deployed to the HP UX box.
any suggestion OR recommendation for Tool OR any help in ths regard would be highly appreciated...
Cheers
Sohan

Usually the installation notes for the jvm tell you how to install it.
First figure out what OS you have then get the JVM for it. Installing should be self explainitory after you do all that.

  • How to print a text file using Java

    How can I print a text file using Java without converting the output to an image format. Is there anyway I can send the characters in the text file as it is for a print job? I did get a listing doing this ... but that converted the text to an image format before printing....
    THanks,.

    Hi I had to write a print api from scratch, and I did not convert the output to image. Go and read up on the following code. I know there is a Tutorial on Sun about the differant sections of the snippet.
    private void printReport()
         Frame tempFrame = new Frame(getName());
         PrintJob printerJob = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getPrintJob(tempFrame, "Liesltext", null);
         Graphics g = printerJob.getGraphics();
                    //I wrote the method below for calculations
         printBasics(g);
         g.dispose();
         printerJob.end();
    }This alone wont print it you have to do all the calculations in the printBasics method. And as I said I wrote this from scratch and all I did was research first the tutorial and the white papers

  • Printing a PDF document using Java 1.4 Printing API

    Hi,
    When I tried to print a PDF document using JAVA 1.4 Printing API, I got the following exception.

    I am able to print the same PDF document using Acrobat reader.
    Is PDF format not supported in JAVA 1.4 printing API? or is something wrong in my code?
    here is the sample JAVA program that I was using

    Here's a pure Java solution (that works!):
    http://www.mycgiserver.com/~zhouwu/pdf/readme.html
    The caveats are:
    - prints only to the default printer
    - requires a properties file located in the home directory
    my workaround for the last:
         * Print a PDF file to the default printer (might consume lots of memory!).
         * <p>
         * <b>Required:</b>
         * <ul>
         * <li>a file "acrobat.properties" needs to be in the working directory. The content is:

  • Running unix command using java shows error

    Hi All,
    I am trying to run UNIX move command using Java exec method but its throwing error, unable to rename. Here below is the code i am trying to run to move all files from one directory to another directory. source and destination directory exists.
    public class Demo
        public static void main(String args[])
            try
                Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
                Process proc = rt.exec("mv /home/demo1/* /home/demo2");
                int exitVal = proc.waitFor();
                System.out.println("Process exitValue: " + exitVal);
            } catch (Throwable t)
                t.printStackTrace();
    }if i give "mv /home/demo1 /home/demo2" in exec method, its working, with * character its giving problem.
    Please help me in resolving the problem.
    Thank you

    Characters like *, >, &, |, etc. are interpreted by the command shell--that is by the bash, zsh, etc. programs. When you execute a command with ProcessBuilder or Runtime.exec, you're not going through one of those shells, so their interpretation of those characters is not available.
    In your code, the character * is being delivered directly to the mv command (which doesn't think * is anything special), as opposed to being turned into a list of files and directories as it would be when it's interpreted by the shell. The mv command doesn't know anything about the * character being special.
    If you want to have those shell interpretations, you need to execute the command through a shell. One example is like so, but a) you'll want to read up on the methods in exec() that take arrays of String, and b) you'll want to read up on ProcessBuilder, and c) you'll need to check your shell's man pages to see the exact syntax and arguments.
    runtime.exec("/bin/bash -c 'mv x/* y'");

  • How to find cd rom drive in windows and unix platform using java program

    Hi,
    I am having the requirement of finding the cd rom drive
    using java program. I do not know the label and which
    one is the cd rom drive. also I want to know how many
    cd rom drives are there on my system. I want the solution
    for windows and unix platforms.
    If have any suggestions please mail to [email protected]
    Deepak

    Ughhh.. I had the same problem with multi platform file-system detection
    First off - Unix.
    Do you know for sure you have all your drives mounted?? This could be a big problem because java will not see unmounted drives... So you can scour thru your /etc/fstab to find out which drives are available... or you can mount all and show roots... (Yuck!)... You've got timeouts and all sorts of things to worry about...
    I would then shy away from the java.io.File.listRoots() on unix and rely on parsing your fs file. If a user would like to see the medium in the drive. Do a Runtime.exec and mount the drive, then you can grab the filesystem by wrapping it in the java.io.File object. ( NOTE - this will hold well for your NFS mounts as well which might be buried under other FS. So you now have detection for that as well. ) Labels are also noted in this file. Let me know if you don't know the difference between mtab and fstab....
    Second - Winders.... Corney but I love saying that.
    The listRoots is a good solution. As others have said CD-ROMS will not be writable. Use a combination of getName and getPath to decipher the label and mount point.
    Hope this helps!

    kevin

    You need to use
    String fileNane = "setup.exe";
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec(fileName);that is if you are writing code
    if you are just calling if from a terminal just write
    java then the file name ( well I think that is right :)
    I do know that the code above work as I have it working on a windoze box

  • Printing txt/doc files using Java

    Hi, i need to take in info from a GUI and format it nicely, then print it. Ive never done any printing from Java before so to get started im just trying to read in some text from a '.txt' file and send it to the printer.
    I can detect the printer correctly and it seems to send the job to it because the printers own 'print dialog' thing pops up saying that its printing. When that dialog progress bar gets to 100% it disappears as it usaually does. The problem is, the printer doesnt actually do anything. Heres the code im using:
    public class Printer
         public Printer()
              PrintService pservices = PrintServiceLookup.lookupDefaultPrintService();
              System.out.println("Selected Printer: " + pservices.getName());
              try
                   InputStream is = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream("C:/j2sdk1.4.2_04/eclipse/workspace/MyProgram/mainPackage/example.txt"));
                   DocFlavor flavor = DocFlavor.INPUT_STREAM.AUTOSENSE;
                   DocPrintJob pj = pservices.createPrintJob();
                   Doc doc = new SimpleDoc(is, flavor, null);
                   pj.print(doc, null);
                   is.close();
              catch (IOException ie)
                   System.out.println("ERROR (IOException): "+ie);
              catch (PrintException e)
                   System.out.println("ERROR (PrintException): "+e);
              catch(Exception ex)
                   System.out.println("ERROR: "+ex);
         public static void main(String args[])
              Printer ps = new Printer();
    }So if anyone knows whats going wrong, or if u have a nice simple code sample that deos what i want, id appreciate it.
    Thanks.

    mmm strange... ive since moved on to a different approach and its printing fine now, thanks for your replies :) But now im having probs setting the printable region of the page.
    As standard, theres a border around the page that u cant print to. When i print the PageFormat's width/height and the imageable width/height i get this;
    (before) pageFormat.getWidth(): 595.19
    (before) pageFormat.getHeight(): 841.80
    (before) pageFormat.getImageableWidth(): 451.19
    (before) pageFormat.getImageableHeight(): 697.80So as u can see, theres a boarder that u cant render to. So then i try setup a page like this;
    Paper page = new Paper();
    page.setSize(f.getWidth(), pageFormat.getHeight());
    page.setImageableArea(0, 0, pageFormat.getWidth(), pageFormat.getHeight());
    pageFormat.setPaper(page);Then, after setting the PageFormat's page to be the newly setup page, i reprint the PageFormat's width/height and the imageable width/height and i get this;
    (after) pageFormat.getWidth(): 595.19
    (after) pageFormat.getHeight(): 841.80
    (after) pageFormat.getImageableWidth(): 595.19
    (after) pageFormat.getImageableHeight(): 841.80So now u can see that i looks like the boarder is gone. The problem is, i still cant print in that margin so im obviously missing something.
    Anyone able to help me?

    Desktop.print() is the simplest way. Everything else will get tricky really fast.I wonder if one could print .doc file though.Desktop.print() simply tells the OS to do whatever it usually does to print the file. If Word is installed, it should start word with the file as an argument and whatever parameter it takes to tell Word to print it.
    If you don't have anything installed that can view/print words files (or the correct entries are missing in the registry), then it won't work, of course.
