Pro Oracle Application Express - Book

I thought this book was being released at the end of June? It appears as though now it's just a pre order and it doesn't ship until September?
Chad

Hi Chad,
The book was always targetted to coincide with APEX 3.0, as you can appreciate it's difficult to write about a new version of software before it is written (and it takes a long time to write a book, as I've learned).
So, whilst much of the book could be written before I had access to 3.0, much of it was highly dependent on the new features that 3.0 introduced.
However, there is also an important point. The book does not just cover specific features of 3.0, it also tries to show how to use specific features to achieve specific business aims. In other words, rather than just listing the features of APEX 3.0 (which the Oracle provided help does a great job of), the book tries to show how to achieve real world requirements, for example -
"How can I write my own authentication routines and handle account expiry?"
or
"How can I customise how my site looks?"
or
"How can I integrate my apps so the user only need to login once?"
and so on...
It's questions like that which I see coming up time and again in the forums, and that's precisely what I've tried to do with the book. So, whilst the book uses 3.0, many of the techniques that it shows are valid from versions before 3.0 and certainly versions subsequent to 3.0.
When I was first started outlining the book, I was torn between whether it should just show the latest and greatest features available in 3.0, or whether it should attempt to show how to actually use those features in the real world. I opted for the later approach, since ultimately we don't just use a tool for the sake of it, we use it to achieve a particular aim.
As for the 'out-of-date' aspect, there are two sides to that, I could certainly have chopped out huge chunks of what I've put into the book in order to make it ship as soon as possible. But would that have made it a better book (and more useful?) because it came out earlier? I don't think so, but obviously I'm biased ;)
John.

  • Pro Oracle Application Express source code?

    Greetings,
I bought this book almost a year ago and have yet to see the source code posted on the Apress website. Does anyone know if the source code actually exists or is it vaporware?
    Regards,
    Bill Chadbourne

    Bill,
somebody's lying and it's not Apress. That's a pretty aggressive accusation, you seem to be taking this almost personally for some reason?
As the author of the book, I can assure you that I have nothing to gain by not making the source code available (can you think of a single reason?).
As I mentioned previously, we (myself and APress) are sorting this out as we speak. Please bear with us while we address the issue.

  • Pro Oracle Application Express 4 Delay in shipping

Just a heads up for people that may have ordered this through Amazon.com. They are saying there is a 5-10 day delay on shipping. I ordered back in April and they say it should be shipping between July 12th and the 15th. Just for the bother, they gave me 1 day shipping versus the 5-7 day free shipping...
    Just letting you guys know...
    Thank you,

Look on last page of book for an offer to download the e-book for $10.00.. John has been trying to get the epress folks to release the code listings from the book for a while, so I would suggest to you get the e-book in PDF form..

  • Best beginner book for Oracle Application Express?

    Hello Dear members,
I've got 12 years of experience developing Oracle applications using Oracle Forms and PL/SQL, that bit I'm an expert.
But I'm torn between which book to buy to learn Oracle Application Express.
The Expert Oracle Application Express vs Oracle Apex Cookbook is my main competition.
I'm already doing the 2 day Developer guide, but want to go in a bit deeper.
    All of your suggestions welcome.
    Thanks
    Ravi

    Ravi,
If you are not at all familiar with Application Express i would reccomend getting Beginning Oracle Application Express 4 because you will find that Pro Oracle Application Express 4, Second Edition, Expert Oracle Application Express and Oracle Apex Cookbook assume you have more of an unserstanding and some parts wont make sense. I had friend of mine get an advanced book and then immediately go back and get the beginner book because it just didnt have much meaning to him.
    Thanks,

  • Informations about Oracle Application Express

    Hello,
for my company I have to do a complete comparison of four tools which can be used for creation of GUIs:
    - Oracle Application Framework
    - Oracle Forms
    - Oracle Application Express
    - Microsoft .NET Framework
Here in this topic I search for some facts about the ApEx:
    - How does it work (language, tools, ...)
    - Performance vs. the other three
    - Integretation into E-Business Suite
    - Possitbilites of the GUI
    - Screenshots, Links, etc.
    thx a lot

The goal is to build a GUI where you can handle Tabledate, etc. Well you can certainly very easily do that with APEX.
As for the disadvantages/advantages, what I would suggest is -
    Option 1
    Use -
    1) OTN (plus other Vendors websites)
    2) OTN Forums/Google Groups etc
    3) Google to find other sources (but with extreme care to validate/verify your sources)
To research the information on your own. Unless you have experience of the products yourself, then this area is fraught with potential problems, as you are effectively quoting information that you have not verified yourself (hence the need to be very satisified that you trust the source of the information).
    Option 2
Contact a respective expert in each of the technologies asking them to cite advantages and disadvantages of the tool they use.
Again, there is a potential for 'bias' here, so you need to make sure that your 'source' is objective enough to be able to provide realistic disadvantages of the tool (at least in the context of your question)
    Option 3
By far the best option in my view -
Try and find someone who has used both/some/all of the tools you're trying to compare. Once again it needs to be someone who's opinion you can trust (otherwise what is the point?).
The most difficult thing about having 2 people comparing products A and B, is that the person extolling the virtues of product A might not know that product B actually makes certain things easier and vice-versa. By having someone who has used BOTH products discuss the pros and cons then you get a much more 'real-world usability' view of the benefits and drawbacks.
Just my thoughts, hope they help.
    John.

  • Oracle Pl/Sql and Oracle Application Express for Beginners

    Good day,
Have a prodigy that is strongly interested in oracle application express.Haven know that he will only do we in APEX if he is good in pl/sql and have some skills in html and javascripts.
For such person, what are the books that i can recommend for him, that will guide and assist him? Will be highly grateful if anybody can assist.

I think it also falsely gives the impression that one does not need to understand the database at all because Apex can do everything for you...This is why I echo Munky when he says that you need a solid understanding of data models and the database before attempting to build an application.
I absolutely concur with this view. When I first started using ApEx, I was basically given a user guide and told to get on with it :-) Subsequently, for the first 6 months or so, I built probably fairly lousy (but functional) apps until I got a better grasp of Oracle architecture.
That being said, SQL is an absolute must if you are going to work on a database. PL/SQL really should be learned as well because your application will be limited without it. CSS and Javascript and nice to have's, but they can be learned as you go. Since all of the api's are built in pl/sql, it would really hinder what you could do if you didn't know it.One resource I have found very useful is the good old 'Ant' book a.k.a. Oracle PL/SQL Programming by Feuerstein, et al. I have a well-thumbed 4th edition sitting on my desk at the moment - weirdly for a text book, rather a joy to read.
I personally found Jay-Lew's "Cost-based Oracle Fundamentals" a somewhat bitterer pill to swallow - tough on the way down but good for one's constitution!

  • Unable Logging in to Oracle Application Express Administration Services

I am new for DB. Installed Oracle XE, followed the instruction "Logging in to Oracle Application Express Administration Services", I can not find the login page:
    http://127.0.0.1:7777/pls/apex/apex_admin
I work on the PC in which XE installed.
    Where are these two files
    ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\install\portlist.ini
    ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\Apache\Apache\conf\httpd.conf
    I did a search, can't find them.
    Any help welcome.
    Thanks.

The default port for the Apex webserver is 8080, not 7777.
To access the XE Database GUI from the Start menu, select Programs (or All Programs), then Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, and then Go to Database Home Page. (I'm assuming your on Windows)
Or try: http://localhost:8080/apex in your browser.
The files you mention relate to Apache web server. Oracle XE does not include a Apache, it's web server is built into the database. Are you sure you're following the right documentation? See http://www.oracle.com/pls/xe102/homepage
    Hope this helps.

  • Need help on installing Oracle Application express 3.2

    Hi,
I had downloaded Oracle 11g database and installed the personal edition.I got the Enterprise manager login page working and also the DBConsole
I had Downloaded APEX 3.2 and wanted to install apex 3.2.I wanted to do the following scenario
Scenario 3: Install from the Database and Configure the Embedded PL/SQL
    Gateway
Planning to do these steps: ( I have few questions on these steps and are below each step)
    ■ Running the apxconf.sql Configuration Script
Do I have to install Oracle Application express or is it already installed in 11g personal edition?
Do I have to create a seperate database or schema for this step( I have only one instance orcl1) ?■ Verifying the Oracle XML DB HTTP Server Port
Can I do this step in my current orcl1 instance,if so which user■ Enabling Oracle XML DB HTTP Server
Once I carry out these steps, Can I access the admin page for apex with https://localhost:port/apex_admin ?
Am I missing any other steps ?
    Thanks

    I have one idea..
    Try to install again:
    1) download and unzip apex_3.2 in $ORACLE_HOME
    You will have:
    $ORACLE_HOME/apex - old directory
    $ORACLE_HOME/apex_3.2 - new directory
    2) in command line go to $ORACLE_HOME/apex_3.2/apex
    run sqlplus "/as sysdba"
    in sqlplus run @apexins tablespace_apex tablespace_files tablespace_temp images
    Where:
tablespace_apex is the name of the tablespace for the Oracle Application Express application user.
tablespace_files is the name of the tablespace for the Oracle Application Express files user.
tablespace_temp is the name of the temporary tablespace.
images is the virtual directory for Oracle Application Express images. To support future Oracle Application Express upgrades, define the virtual image directory as /i/.
    Example:
    @apexins SYSAUX SYSAUX TEMP /i/
    3) check installation log for errors
    4) in command line go to $ORACLE_HOME/apex_3.2/apex
    run sqlplus "/as sysdba"
    in sqlplus run @apxconf
    set admin password
    set port
    5) run @apxldimg.sql $ORACLE_HOME/apex_3.2
    6) check for running listener and try to login apex: http:\\host:port\apex\apex_admin
    Good luck!

  • How do I create "Oracle Application Express Adminstrator" in APEX 3.2.1?

    Hello,
Quite the newbie so I appreciate any assistance with this.
How do create "Oracle Application Express Adminstrator" in APEX 3.2.1? I am not talking about a workspace adminstrator but an Entire APEX instance administrator or "superuser"?
I log into APEX_ADMIN as ADMIN and understand how to create a new user. But how do I grant the new user DBA or "super user" privlidges? It was easy to do when I first installed XE, I would just "check" the "DBA" when I created the user. But when I upgraded to APEX 3.2.1 the function does not seem to be there?
Thank you for any help you can provide!

    Hi,
I think you can not grant DBA role from Apex anymore.
You need connect to database e.g. with SYS user and grant that role.

  • How to stop and start only the process of Oracle Application Express?

I'd like to know how to stop the process of Oracle Application Express on my server installed oracle express package.
After installed Oracle Express edition, not only oracle database server processes but also Oracle Application Express, such as http server, is started automatically...
I hope to stop and start Application Express on demand but is this feature enabled?

Oracle Apex is an API, if that helps you understand / visualize. You do not start Apex process nor stop it.
When an Apex session starts it starts calling the API.
You can however start / stop the listener. It may be OHS, ApexListener and the J2EE container running it, OC4J or any other "server" that you are using.
The built-in EPG is something like an API again, you cannot start / stop it but you can disable/enable it with DBMS_XDB.SETHTTPPORT API.

Try making your column definition as "Remove HTML and escape special characters".
I tried it and it make the column appear as editable as intended and also clicking on the column heading or on the filter in the IR bar behave properly.
