Proactive Tablespace Management in a large environment

Hi, I was wondering how others in the community manage tablespaces proactively. In our situation we have thousands of oracle databases and are not using a primary DBA service model. We don't have DBA's looking at individual databases on a daily basis.
It often becomes a reactive measure to add space. Given the size of our environment tablespace management becomes a very tedious and time consuming action for us. Looking for way to minimize or automate this process.
I'm looking for a way to have a more "intelligent autoextend". With autoextend, the database engine won't take action until there is space pressure (ie. 99%). I'm looking for something when it crosses a defined thershold (ie. 85%).
To further add to the complexity we use shared storage (ASM) for many databases. There needs to be intelligence to check the available space first.
We are considering writing a custom script and using EM's Corrective Action to invoke the script based on the threshold. This will be a fairly significant development effort.
Is there anything from oracle "out of the box" that I should be considering?
How are others out there managing space in their large, complex oracle environments?
Ideas are much appreciated!

I'm looking for something when it crosses a defined thershold (ie. 85%).What will be a benefit of such "intelligent autoextend"? What is a difference if a data file extended being 85% full versus 99% full?
From Application perspective there is no difference, it got the space for data in any case.
My ultimate goal is to not have DBA's add space entirely (or close to it)why the "out of box" autoextend does not work for you?
Just specify MAXSIZE according to your storage and DBA do not need to add space entirely. Until disk is full.
But. If you really do need some "intelligent autoextend" you (or your DBA) can write a PL/SQL script that can use any level of intelligence you put in its logic. It can forecast, extend datafiles, add datafiles, shrink them, even check disk space and send email about it.
Writing this script will be that "more exciting DBA task" ;)

You better read the documentation here for the alerts regarding tablespaces:

  • Open module for managing property file and environment variables

Looking for an open module for managing property files and environment variables (like CLASSPATH) set in a shell script. For handeling properties (preserving comments, supporting includes, appending new entries, and more) I have looked at SuperProperties from openadaptor but find certain functionality lacking. As for interfacing with common shell scripts/files containing setting for CLASSPATH, JAVA_HOME, other system/application variables another type of object editor is needed. Maybe JFIG?
    Any ideas are greatly welcomed.

You seem wright, you hit a brick wall here with Air to find the location
of the command console on windows...
So in fact I never build an exe tool, but this little problem was a nice
case to test it and I tried it.:
    I downloaded monodevelop
    -GTK# for .NET 2.12.10*
    -MonoDevelop 2.4.2*
       from http://monodevelop.com/Download
created a console project and had an exe in 5 minutes !
You can download the findconsole tool and the projectfiles here:

    Hi All
We noticed that BTABD was hundred percent and now database is not coming up and from operating system level if we login and try to increase the tablespace through sql command it says:
"DB21034E  The command was processed as an SQL statement because it was not a
valid Command Line Processor command.  During SQL processing it returned:
SQL1036C  An I/O error occurred while accessing the database.  SQLSTATE=58030"
Not only that any command we execute it gives same error message and if we start sap it says Activate Database Failed, R3trans Connect Failed, Database start up failed

  • Best folder redirection options for a large environment

I am just curious to hear what the community recomends for large environments for user's files. Meaning, is desktop sync better than creating home directories and using offline sync? I am just trying to find the best way to have users able to access their
files on or off the network. As well as the best way of managing users files. Making it easy for them to save files and be able to access them at home. Maybe linking their desktop and My Documents folder to a share? I am open for all suggestions. Now to give
you an idea, this is a county public school enviroment. So you have to have something that will work with Staff, Teachers, Administration, and students. Also realize this is a huge environment with multiple schools. I look forward to your suggestions.
Also, all clients are Windows 7 and servers would be 2008 R2 for this scenario.

What I would do is use Folder Redirection in a GPO, using the advanced properties. Assign Teachers, Students and Staff different security groups in AD, and then in your GPO, assign the group members of "Teacher Security Group" a folder redirection of 'Create
a new folder for each user' at \\SVR-DATA\Users\Teachers. Then use a cache to keep the files offline. You will know if this works as you will see 'CSC-CACHE' under the Home drive when offline. Look below...

  • Tutorial for managing bookmarks in iPhone environment?

I hate asking newbie questions but here goes. Searched for this but found threads regarding desktop environment.
When I open Safari on my iPhone 3CS, I see bookmarks imported from my pc when I synched. Don't need all those so deleted most. Here's the problem: if I type in a new address in Safari addres field at top, and go to that page, then do Add Bookmark, it doesn't show up the next time I open Safari and look at the bookmarks. If I start to re-type it in the address field, the full link and title appear below, so I know it's storing it somewhere.
Can someone just point me toward an online tutorial for manageing bookmarks within the iPhone environment not the desktop?
    Thanks!

it's one of the dangers to BYOD.....The best way to manage this is education(unless you are ready for MDM).
Granted that can be a bigger pain in the buttocks than working around it.
What I tell people(having had this happen to me a couple of times) is when it's time to change your password
1.) Make sure you have all your devices with you
2.) disable the wireless on everything
3.) change password via your laptop
4.) enable one device, and go change the password there < rinse repeat for subsequent devices.
Now, when the company I was working for moved to a MDM, the issue went away on my phone and tablet, as the mail settings were controlled by the MDM, so when i changed my password, it pushed to my other devices.

  • How to manage Development/Tset/Production Environment in Planning

    Hi Gurus,
I wanted to know what is the best method to manage these 3 environment in Planning.
Does it require to install seperate installation on seperate servers or we can use one installation of planning, RDBMS and essbase.
    or
    it require some other technique.
Please advise me, though i know it is simple question but small hint will be a great help.
    Thanks
    Kumar

    Hi,
It all depends on your infrastructure and what products you are using.
In most cases dev/prod are on different servers and are separate installs, this is the route I would promote.
Some clients do share an environment for dev/test but not all, not everybody is the same.

  • Project Management in stand alone environment

My customer belong to professional service(IT delivery service) industry.
And they want to manage their projects by using PPM 5.0(cProjects).
One of my customer's requirement is managing their projects in stand alone environment.
That is to say, project manager excute the project in the customer site after contracting their customer project.
But customer forbid him to set network environment as VPN because of customer's securiy policy.
Can I meet custome's requirement by using cProjects.
Could you give me any good solution.

    Hi,
I believe the cProjects (PPM5.0) is the SAP solution provided for the such type of project management requirements only. You can use cProjects as  standalone Project management solution, wherein you can plan, execute and monitor your projects from remote locatuons (customer site). You can use cProjects by using NWBC on HTML and / or Enterprise portal (EP). Please read for SAP Help and other SAP PPM 5.0 reference documents to get more details about how it will fit in your requirement.

  • Management of my large Itunes collection very very very slow!

I have digitised my complete collection of CDs, some 50.000 songs.
This represents some 300 Gb of music managed from my IMAC G5, 2 GHz, 2 Gb RAM.
But in practise, Itunes is barely usable, any action like renaming a song or correcting the name of an artist requires many tens of seconds, or even minutes during which all I get is the spinning wheel.
Quitting other programmes barely improves the speed of ITunes.
Do you have a recommendation to improve the usability of ITunes (except deleting my songs!)?
Is it possible to allocate a large fraction of the RAM to improve ITunes?
    Powerbook G4 1GHz, IMAC G5 2GHz, 2 Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I'm glad you "fixed" your problem. But, dare I say, you will see that in the long run, shuffle is, how to say this....sucky?
I have my iPod on shuffle A LOT. Day in, day out....for the past six months...same songs, time after time....after time, after time. Yet, hundreds that I haven't come close to hearing....the shuffle option is very poor.
    'Course, that is MY opInIon!

  • SQL Server Management Studio - Configuring the environment for first time use

    Hi
I have recently switched my local 'My Documents' folder location to a network drive that I 'make available off line' to allow on-line/off-line work and synchronisation when I am working in and out of the office.
When I load my SQL Server Management Studio 2005 I frequently get 'Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio is configuring the environment for first time use'.
Management Studio  them loads and I can continue without problem.
I am guessing it is trying to make reference to some settings file. Any ideas? I wonder if I can change/move these settings elsewhere to a local drive?
    Thanks

    Hi,
There is bug report of this issue:
    http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/126364/configuring-enviroment-for-the-first-time-every-time-in-ms-sql-server-management-express
"SQL Server Management Studio Express saves the settings for the user in ...\Documents and Settings\<User Profile>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\ShellSEM
    and in ...\Documents and Settings\<user profile>\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\ShellSEM
if any of these files are not available or unusable, SSMSE will generate new ones."
    Hope this helps.

  • Design Considerations for a Repository Manager in a clustered environment

    Hi,
I am currently building a repository manager for a backend document management system.  Our portal is installed in a load balanced clusterd environment and we are creating the following functionality in the repostiory manager -
      -  Browse content
      -  Read/Write document Metadata
      -  Upload/download documentation
      -  Reserve/Unreserve documentation
      -  Search
How will a clustered environment affect the implementation of the repository manager?  Would I need to check for a clustered installation in any kind of way in my code?  Currently I do not see why this would be necessary, but i'm not entirely sure and I need this manager to work in a clustered environment.
I could see this as being an issue if we are caching information about the documents in the repository.  However, we are not.  We will only be caching user information which can be stored separately in a single cache on each server.
    Thanks for your help,
    Scott

    Hi Scott!
There might be two reasons for knowing whether other cluster nodes are running or not and for communicating with them:
    - synchronizing access to the backend
    - synchronizing caches
If your repository manager must care for serialized access to the backend you will have to synchronize cluster-wide. You don't have to, if your backend can handle parallel access on its own (like a web-server).
If you cache data in your repository and you want to update the caches of the repositories on the other cluster nodes (maybe because you don't get events for changed data from your backend), you must think of sending messages between cluster nodes. You don't have to, if you think that the expiration of your cache entries is shorter than the required timeliness of the data.
    Kind Regards, Dirk
