I use the imac mainly for editing Video which when doing so it has reached temperatures of near to 60° C which causes the program to become unstable and needs to be cooled down to operate correctly.
An Apple technician (by phone) advised me to download an smcfancontrol.  This allows each individual fan to increase speed and also advises the current temperature at °C.  The smcfancontrol has been downloaded but this has not resolved the problem.  By increasing the speed of the fan more heat is generated and creates additional noise.
I have since taken the iMac to an Apple Store for examination as suggested by APPLECARE when the fans were found to be working correctly.  An Apple Store technician carried out a test, but not whilst working under the pressure of FINAL CUT PRO when the iMac generates a high temperature.
The Temperature Specification  for this model is
Operating Temperature 20 °c to 35°C
Storage Temp.47°c
Clearly the temperature my iMac  is operating at is excessive and could cause the computer to break down prematurely.  Has anyone experienced this problem.
Frank Howell

When was the last time you cleaned/vacuumed out all of your iMac's vents, slots and ports.
You need to do this with the iMac powered down, disconnected from power and everything disconnected.
Lay your iMac, screen down, on a soft surface, like a heavy towel. Use a small electronics vac, or portable or full size vac with hose and a crevice tool attachment and carefully and slowly vacuum every vent, slot and port on your iMac.
Then reconnect everything up, power up and download and install iStat Pro. Start working, then report the temps of your iMac after this has been done.
When using SMCFan Control, it is important not to run the fans at too high an RPM. This doesn't generate heat on its own, but will suck in more dust, lint and dirt into your iMac, and that will be the cause of additonal increases in heat.
I run my fans in the range of 1400-1600 RPMs. You can go as high as 1800 RPMs but it is important to keep the RPM range below either 1800 or below 2000 RPMs.
I, also, run a very small desktop fan pointed toward the upper back of my iMac to keep temps down even further.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • GB09 & iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Whoa!

Monday my old eMac 1 Ghz PPC died. Luckily today the new iMacs came out so I purchased a 24" iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3. 1 Terabyte internal.
When I opened GB09 it was so fast my eyebrows singed! OUCH!
Now I don't have to use every trick in the book to keep GB from stopping every 3 seconds!
Apparently the motherboard in my eMac died but the drive is most likely still good. Unfortunately it has all my GB files and synths on it. (I was going to buy a new iMac as soon as it came out and transfer all my files to it but as luck would have it the eMac crapped out one day too soon).
Anyway since this is the forum I use the most I wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can get my info off my other drive>
Can I remove it and get some sort of connector and hook it up to my new iMac?
    Thanks
    P.S.
My usual screen name is WarriorAnt but for some reason my new iMac is using my real name? Go figure.

    Matt,
That eMac weighs at least 50 pounds! I already brought it to the Apple store twice in one day. They made me come back with it 4 hours later because I didn't have an appointment. 30 miles trip each way.
I finally got the eMac to respond thru commands from a safe mode start and then repairing the directory with diskwarrior and then again from the install DVD. I have pretty much determined that the RAM is OK and the logic board is functioning. The problem seems to be that the OS on the HD is somehow corrupted and cannot send the right info to the eMac to boot up.
I can boot it from the install disc no problem but I need some sort of bootable system disk like SYS 9 used to be able to get to the drive contents ( I think). I had to send away for a firewire 400 - 800 connector adapter so I can try to make the eMac drive a firewire target for migration to the iMac. The new iMac do not have 400 firewire capability.
If I can't get the info to migrate then I guess I'll have to open the eMac and pull out the drive and do the connector route and see if it will function as an external drive.
And just to relate this part of the thread to GB, well, all my GB .band files are on that drive in that computer! It only had to last one more day! The horror..........
I'm really loving my new iMac though. 5 years of using the old eMac with GB has truly tested my patience.

This morning, I made a new "customer" and downloaded the "trial version" of CC2014 photoshop. This resulted a working CC2014. I hope Adobe can fix my "real" account which does not work at this time.
    Anyone else tried this?
    Ken

I don't think everyone with a Mac is having basic problems with Photoshop 2014.1.
What exact versions do you have in each case?  Is your updated version 2014.1, while the "new customer" version is 2014.0?  Choose Help - System Info to see.
Sounds like, given your specific system, you may want to try a full clean and reinstall, or maybe a downgrade to 2014.0 until 2014.1.1 or 2014.2 comes out.  I think the older versions are available through the Creative Cloud application.

Yosemite. Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download it from the Mac App Store.
If desired, you can instead buy a download code for Lion or Mountain Lion from the online Apple Store.

It's beta open source software so I'm not surprised. It does't look to be too active a project, so I don't know if it will help or not but you might be maybe better off posting a bug report on their Sourceforge page here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kompozer/

  • What does all of this mean? 2.66 GHz intel core 2 duo / 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3?

please help..i dont really know what all of these numbers represent, could someone please explain them to me in basic non techy language!!! thanx

    Here you go ....
*2.66 Ghz* is the speed of the central processing unit, which is the brain of the computer.
*Intel core 2 duo* is the central processing unit manufactured by Intel. Core 2 duo tells you it has 2 paths in it to process computer instructions.
2GB is how much semiconductor memory the system has to use for loading and running OS X, applications, and other programs. This is different than hard drive disk space, which is usually shown as 80GB, 120GB, etc, which is where programs and data are more permanently stored.
*1067 Mhz* is the speed that the memory operates at.
DDR3 is the architecture of the memory. There's lots of technical specifications behind that.
So, what should you care about in that alphabet soup? The speed of the computer is important, the 2.66Ghz. Faster is almost always better in the long run. That there is 2GB of memory is important. Beyond that, the remaining information is interesting, but won't swing any decisions.

  • Adding Memory to a White MacBook 2.16 Ghz Intel Core Duo (Memory 1Gb 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM)

    Good afternoon from London.
I want to put 2x2GB memory into my MacBook (mid 2007) but Apple support site specifies that the maximum amount of memory for this model is 2Gb. In other words, I can only add 2X1Gb.
What would happen if I proceed?

Thanks. They say the following, which I take to mean that I am good to go:
MacBook2,1 (All) - Install up to 4.0GB total memory, uses up to 3.0GB.
Note: Although limited to physically utilizing a maximum of 3GB, there is a performance
benefit due to 128 Bit addressing when 4GB( 2GB x 2 Matched set) is installed.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
The many "failed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews mean nothing. Those warnings are not a reason to reinstall the OS, or to do anything else at all. They should be ignored.
The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.
