Problem importing a CSV file with forward slashes in a column

I have an Excel csv file of a product database (contains about 6500 products) that contains product codes with forward slahes such as 499/1, 499/3, 499/5.
These are different sizes of a product and as such have different prices etc.
When I import the file into Numbers these numbers appear as 499, 166 1/3, and 99 4/5 respectively.
What seems to be happening is that Numbers is interpreting the forward slash (/) as a divide by command and subsequently performing a calculation on that number on import and hence totally changing the value of the cell so that it is impossible to look up the price related to a product as the product code no longer exists.
Excel can import these files with no problems, why can't Numbers treat each cell as text and leave it alone on import.
Is there any way round this or do I have to revert to using Excel for the import of csv files.
Thanks
Steve

I know I'm a bit(!) late (a year) coming to this party, but there is a simple solution, that worked for me, enclose the field in double quotes, and add a single quote before the number:
Instead of
499/1,"Super Widget 3",12.34
do
"'499/1","Super Widget 3",12.34
In fact the single (unclosed) quote without double-quotes works as well:
'499/1,"Super Widget 3",12.34
I've always found it better to enclose strings with double quotes. This works on loading the file into Mac Numbers and should work with Excel too if that helps. It opens with OpenOffice 4 on the Mac too - if you select "comma" in the "Separated by" checkbox
I can't remember where I picked this info up....
Hope this helps someone, albeit late.

  • Reading a csv file with a large number of columns

    Hello
I have been attempting to read data from large csv files with 38 columns by reading a line using readline and scanning the linebuffer using scan.
The file size can be up to 100 MB.
Scan does not seem support the large number of fields.
Any suggestions on reading the 38 comma separated fields. There is one header line in the file.

  • How to import from CSV file into INTERVAL DAY TO SECOND column?

    Hello,
I need to import data from a csv file that has a column that stores time-intervals (e.g. 2:06:02 Hours:Minutes:Seconds) into a table column INTERVAL DAY TO SECOND.
Does any of you know what format I should apply?
    I tried HH:MI:SS but it didn't work.
Any suggestion is welcomed (including changing the column type to something else that might hold time-intervals in it....).
    Thanks,
    Andrei

    Andrei,
There is no native support for the INTERVAL datatype in the Text loading facilities of Application Express.
To work around this known limitation, I suggest either creating a temporary table or a shadow column in your existing table. You could then upload your data for the interval as a VARCHAR2 and then use SQL to convert to an appropriate interval value.
    For example:
    1) Create a table with:
create table foo (id number primary key, i interval day to second, shadowi varchar2(4000) )2) Using your sample data set, load this data into table FOO, loading the second column of this data into column SHADOWI
    1     01:06:02
    2     02:06:02
3     03:01:013) Issue the following SQL to convert the value in your shadow interval column to your actual interval column
update foo set i = to_dsinterval( '0 ' || shadowi )Note that you'll need to prepend the '0' to formulate a valid interval literal value.

Full support for embedded quotes was added in SSIS 2012.

  • Import From CSV File statement runs forever, no error, does not finish

    Hello,
I am trying to import a CSV file in a JAVA program, with the following statement:

I have two HANA instances on different machines A and B:
Both machines run HANA version 1.00.74.00.389160 (NewDB100_REL), while the OS is
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.1 on machine A and
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.2 on machine B.
The statement above runs fine on machine A and the rows are imported properly from JAVA as well as when executed from HANA Studio SQL console.
If I copy the file to machine B and try the exact same statement with the same file, it does not finish (neither from JAVA nor from HANA Studio SQL console). There is no error either. It cannot be cancelled, only a HANA restart stops the statement. Also the sample file I use has only 2 rows, and memory does not seem to be a problem.
I seem to have a similar problem to the one described here, but the answers there do not help me: http://scn.sap.com/thread/3396582 I specified the record delimiter, and I used a python script to check for any strange characters that are not supposed to be there, but didn't find any.
If I copy the file to my windows PC and use the "File Menu -> Import -> SAP Hana Content -> Data from Local file" function, it imports the file correctly into B, but I need to be able to do it from JAVA.

If you have any idea what might cause this behavior or where I can find more information on this problem please give me a hint.

    Hi Joseph,
First from the pics, the revision of your SAP HANA instance is 73 instead of 74. Since I have no identical environment, I cannot test it for you. But can you try the simplest scenario? You can create a table with only one column table try to import a CSV file with only one row.

  • Import a CSV file into specific cells

    Hello,
I have created a simple Numbers template and I want to import a csv file with its values entering specific cells in an automated way.
I think the best way to automate this process would be an AppleScript that does the following:
    Selects the csv file;
Parses the values inserting them into the the Numbers template i.e. value1 to cell B2, value2 to cell B3 etc.
Unfortunately I know very little about AppleScript, does anyone have any experience in this area that they could pass on?
My idea would be to place the csv values in an array, and loop through the array entering the values in B2, B3 etc.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Dougie

Here is a script doing the full job in a single call.
    --{code}
    --[SCRIPT csv-to-selected-cell]
    colle dans la table.
    --=====
    L’aide du Finder explique:
    --=====
Save the script as a Script: csv-to-selected-cell.scpt
Move the newly created file into the folder:
    <startup Volume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Scripts:Applications:Numbers:
Maybe you would have to create the folder Numbers and even the folder Applications by yourself.
Select the first cell of the block where values extracted from a CSV file must be inserted.
Go to the Scripts Menu, choose Numbers, then choose “csv-to-selected-cell”
The script urge you to navigate to the CSV file.
    It read its contents,
replace the delimiters (";" or ",") by TAB  chars
copy the datas in the clipboard
    paste in the table.
    --=====
    The Finder’s Help explains:
To make the Script menu appear:
Open the AppleScript utility located in Applications/AppleScript.
Select the “Show Script Menu in menu bar” checkbox.
    Under 10.6.x,
go to the General panel of AppleScript Editor’s Preferences dialog box
and check the “Show Script menu in menu bar” option.

I have a *csv file looking like this:
    E0100070;EKKJ 1X10/10 1 KV;1;2003-06-16;01C;75

    E0100455;EKKJ 2X4/4 1 KV;500;2003-06-16;01C;47,1
I want to import this csv file to this table:
    create table artikel (artnr varchar2(10), namn varchar2(25), fp_storlek number, datum date, mtrlid varchar2(5), pris number);
    My controlfile looks like this:
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE 'e:\test.csv'
    INSERT
    INTO TABLE ARTIKEL
    FIELDS TERMINATED BY ';'
    TRAILING NULLCOLS
(ARTNR, NAMN, FP_STORLEK char "to_number(:fp_storlek,'99999')", DATUM date 'yyyy-mm-dd', MTRLID, pris char "to_number(:pris,'999999D99')")
I cant get sql*loader to import the last column(pris) as I want. It ignore my decimal point which in this case is "," and not "." maybe this is the problem. If the decimal point is the problem how can I get oracle to recognize "," as a decimal point??
the result from the import now, is that a decimal number (37,2) becomes 372 in the table

  • How to import data from CSV file with columns separated by semicolon?

I migrate database from MS SQL 2008 to ORACLE 11g
I export data to CSV file from MS SQL
then I try to import it to Oracle
several tables goes fine using Import data option in the SQL Developer
Standard CSV files with data separated by comma were imported.
chars, date (with format string), and integer data are imported via import wizard without problems
the problems were when I try to import table with noninteger numbers with modal part separated by comma not by dot
comma is the standard separator for columns in CSV file
so I must change the standard separator to semicolon
then the import wizard have problem to correct recognize the columns data because it use only standard CSV comma separator :-/
In SQL Developer 1.5.3 Tools -> Preferences -> Migration -> Data Move Options
I change "End of Column Delimiter" to ; but it doens't work
Is this possible to change the standard column separator for import data wizzard in SQL Developer 1.5.3?
Or maybe someone know how to import data in SQL Developer 1.5.3 from CSV when CSV colunn separator is set to semicolon?

A new preference has been added to customize the import delimiter in main code line. This should be available as part of future release.

  • Importing CSV file with Data Merge Fails

    Specs
See pasted text from CSV at http://pastebin.com/mymhugpN
    I am using InDesign CS6 (8.0.1)
I created the CSV by downloading it from a Google Spreadsheet as a CSV. I confirm with the Terminal that the character encoding is utf-8 usnig the file command.
    Problem detailed
I am trying to import a CSV file (utf-8) with Data Merge via the Select Data Source... command with Show Import Options checked. When viewing the Data Source Import Options dialog, I set the following options—Delimiter:Comma, Encoding:Unicode, Platform:Macintosh. I leave Preserve Spaces in Data Source unchecked. It fails to import any variables and produces no error message. I have tried other CSV files as well (created TextEdit, Espresso, etc.) and it seems that InDesign will not import any files if Unicode is specified as the encoding, no matter which other options are specified.
    Can anyone else confirm this?
Importing as ACSII works, but obviously does not display my content correctly.

Mike is having some trouble posting in this thread (and I am too), but he sent me a PM with what he wanted to say:
OK. I think I might have a positive answer for you.
I was getting lost in the upper ASCII characters you showed. In your test file I never could see any--a case of not seeing the trees for the forest.
Your quote marks are getting dropped in your test file. Now, this may or may not affect other factors but it does in some further testing. I believe ID has an issue with dropping quote marks even in a plain ASCII file if the marks are at the beginning of a sentence and the file is tab delimited. Call it a bug.
Because of all the commas and quote marks in your simple file, I think you should be exporting from Google Docs' spreadsheet as a tab-delimited file. This exported file has to be opened in a text editor capable of saving it out as a UTF-16 BE (Big Endian) type of file.
Also, I think you are going to have to use proper quote marks throughout, or change them in the exported tab-delimited file. Best to have a correct source, though.
Here is your sample ZIPped up. I think it works properly. But then again, I think I might be bleary-eyed by now.

Anyone have a idea how to get this in one line in my interbal table??
    Greetz Richard

    Hi Greetz Richard
Problably character  contains same binary code as line feed + carriage return.
You can use statement below as workaround.
OPEN DATASET file FOR INPUT IN TEXT MODE ENCODING UNICODE
In this case your system must support Unicode encoding

  • How to import a csv file without "+" being added to numbers?

I'm trying to import a csv file from my bank. Numbers automatically adds a "+" and "-" sign before all numbers. Numbers won't add the numbers with a + sign. How can I easily remove the + sign? It seems the delimiter in the csv file may be ", rather than , Thanks.

    Wayne,
I don't believe that the plus sign came from Numbers. Except for a purposful application of a Custom Format, Numbers isn't going to add the plue sign. The minus sign is another issue. It's a perfectly acceptable part of the value and shouldn't cause a problem.
If the plus sign came from the CSV file, which you seem to imply isn't the case, you would have to strip it out before submitting to Numbers.

  • Importing a csv file into addressbook

So I did a search & found this question has come up quite often, but with the person having a slightly different problem, so here goes.
I am trying to import a csv file into address book, when I go import -> text tile it comes up like it should do and I pick the file, if I select ok at this point, it will quite happily import all of the data no trouble (but in the wrong categories). So I make the changes to what I want ie. Phone other --> Phone (work). Then when I click ok, the button goes from blue to white but nothing happens.
When I open the csv file in textedit I can see all the values separated by commas.
    Any Ideas?

I too just had this problem. To clarify all fields work and you can map them. I found that the Outlook CSV file had two problems which were tripping up the AddressBook import function. Note these were both in street address fields so I suspect the poster who said that addresses don't work may have been having that problem.
The CSV load program does not work if you have commas "," in your data. In my case this was very common for some European addresses as well as some company names. And then the second problem was if there was a carriage return or new line character in a field. This later one was a problem with the address fields. I suspect an AddressBook export to CSV might have this same issue. Specifically, when there were multiple lines to the street address, they had been entered as multiple lines in street address one, as opposed to entering them in multiple fields such as "street 1", "street 2", etc.
To solve the problem I opened the CSV file using Numbers and did a global find and replace on: commas, substituting the string --- and on the newline character "¶" (ALT+Rreturn) with *.
Note to reduce some of the remapping I also changed all of the labels with "business" in the header row of the CSV file to "work". This made it a little easier for the AddressBook import function to map fields more correctly.
After these set of changes rather than the alternating blue then white with nothing behavior it cleanly loaded all of my names. I could then search for "---" and "*" in addressbook's search field to identify all addresses which I had to clean up.
I hope that is helpful to someone else. The import function really does work. However, it is not robust enough to deal with certain oddities in one's data.

  • Unable to Import Unicode (csv) file to BlackBerry Bold 9700

    Hi all
I'm facing some problems with my new BlackBerry Bold 9700. I have Nokia mobile, I exported my contacts using PC-Suite 7. The exported file includes Arabic characters, so the charset used was in Unicode. I've changed the heading for important fields (and removed others) so that they will match with BlackBerry. I imported the file with "BlackBerry Desktop Manager" using "Synchronize" feature. The import was successful, but the charset was  in wrong format (just like viewing html page with different codepage!) it was like garbage!
Anyhow, I tried to export, as an example, one contact from my BB and I included Arabic text, when I exported the contact list as (csv) I received a "?????"!!! I then imported the same file with "Synchronize" and strangly it did import and accepted the "?????" and displayed the actual Arabic text as a substitution.
How come BB don't support Unicode?! Is there anyway I can import my contacts from Nokia?
I appreciate any kind of help, hints or tips, thanks in advance...
    BlackBerry Bold 9700

I guess, the only option that can help in such situation is to use Outlook Express!
This is how I managed to do it:
    1. Sync between Nokia PC-Suite and Outlook Express
    2. Sync between BB Desktop Manager and Outlook Express
    3. Done
    or
    1. Sync between Nokia PC-Suite and Outlook Express
    2. Export from Outlook Express as an address book (WAP) to use it on other machine
    3. Import to Outlook Express (you can use Address Book from Accessories)
    4. Sync between BB Desktop Manager and Outlook Express
    5. Done

  • Folders with forward slashes in the name not appearing in Mail.app Exchange

Has anybody else seen this? For folders with forward slashes in the name, such as "Meetings/Events", the folder shows up in Outlook Web Access and over Exchange in Entourage 2008, but not Exchange over IMAP with Mail.app in Snow Leopard. The folder shows up once I remove the forward slashes, such as "Meetings Events" or "Meetings-Events" or "Meetings and Events".
Is this a known issue, and is there a fix besides renaming the folders?

In Unix the forward slash is an illegal character for a filename. In general you should avoid using it as the forward slash is used in path names such as /Folder/File. Avoid using the colon as well because it's commonly used as part of a disk identifier in OS X.
This is not any different than avoiding the backslash in Windows filenames.

  • How to create a csv file with NCS attributes?

    Hi
i installed Cisco Prime NCS and trying to perform bulk update of device credentials with csv file.
How to create a csv file with all required attributes?
This is part of NCS online help talking about this topic:
Bulk Update Devices—To update the device credentials in a bulk, select Bulk Update Devices from the Select a command drop-down list. The Bulk Update Devices page appears. You can choose a CSV file.
Note        The CSV file contains a list of devices to be updated, one device per line. Each line is a comma separated list of device attributes. The first line describes the attributes included. The IP address attribute is mandatory.
Bellow is test csv file i created but does not work:
    10.64.160.31,v2c,2,10,snmpcomm,ssh,zeus,password,password,enablepwd,enablepwd,60
    10.64.160.31,v2c,2,10,snmpcomm,ssh,zeus,password,password,enablepwd,enablepwd,60
The error i am getting while importing this file:
Missing mandatory field [ip_address] on header line:10.64.160.31,v2c,2,10,snmpcomm,ssh,zeus,password,password,enablepwd,enablepwd,60
    Assistance appreciated.

It looks like the IP address field is incorrectly set.,
    It should be as follows
    {Device IP},{Device Subnet Mask}, etc etc
so a practical example of the aboove could be (i dont know if this is completely correct after the IP address / Subnet Mask)
    10.64.160.31,255.255.255.0,v2c,2,10,snmpcomm,ssh,zeus,password,password,enablepwd,enablepwd,60
