Problem of blak padding while comparison on nchar column types

hi
i have database oracle 9i with fields of type nchar in tables. in where clause i need to use rtrim(column) = value.
if there are spaces they are not trimmed.
i am using generic_baseletter and ansi for case insensitive search.
see below

i have database oracle 9i with fields of type nchar in tablesthen you should use the N'text' notation (for national character literals):
SQL> SELECT * FROM AREA WHERE rtrim(CODE) = N'bom';
